Limbo, Postponed, Canceled

First, thoughts and prayers to those affected by the San Diego fires. If the Chargers can't return to Qualcomm Stadium this weekend, there's a chance they could play in Dallas. From the article: "Dallas makes sense because the game would likely draw more fans than would a game in Arizona, which would ease the financial losses the Chargers will incur. Also, the Chargers would count on the fact LaDainian Tomlinson is from Waco and went to school at nearby TCU, as well as Dallas fans' acrimony for Houston, to ensure the crowd is not pro-Texans."

That's right, because even in a crisis, the Arizona Cardinals just won't do.

I was of the impression that Dallas' fans have always maintained complete indifference to the Texans, and like to laugh at the Texans' new-boy attempts to pretend that there is a bitter in-state rivalry between the two sides.

Is there any way we can get the NY Giants an extra home game out of this situation?

I don't know. Seems like Houston fans would be able to have an easy time making the trek to Irving to root for the Texans. I think I would prefer Arizona if I were a Charger fan.

Does this mean I shouldn't pick the Chargers in my elimination league?

My only other option is the Giants at Miami, but I'd really prefer not to have to root for the Giants.

I grew up in San Diego. Charger fans wouldn't watch the game if they couldn't find the remote. Half the stadium is usually rooting for the other team, and they've had to put in practices such as selling only blocks of games to prevent raider fans from overrunning the stadium. Even this year, the first game of the season had a large contingent of Bears fans.

Going out of state is right out. Houston and Arizona are probably equivalent as far as a home crowd.

Having recently moved to Austin, I have to say I disagree that Dallas fans will root against Houston. Like Costa said, Dallas fans are mostly indifferent to the Texans, and remember, this is Texas. Not only do they LOVE their football, but they LOVE Texas as well, and are likely to root for a team from Texas over a team from outside of Texas unless there are bitter rivalry issues. Remember, this is the state that has a "National Beer."

I'd like to see it, though, just to find out if I'm right about that.

7. They have a shiny new kick returner!

(I'm a broken record and I know it, I'll stop it.)

OT:
will the profit and players' pay checks of this game go to the homeless?

I think that holds true for most Californians. In fact, having lived here for a year, I have concluded that many Californians don't even realize that there IS such a think as "out of state" (except in a vague, "yeah, I heard of some place far away called New York" kind of way).

Of course, a real danger here is that if the Chargers play a number of home games "away", and lose some of those games, then they have an excuse (a la the Saints in the year of Katrina), and there's a greater probability that we all will be subjected to another year of Norv the Head Coach.

12
by starzero (not verified) :: Wed, 10/24/2007 - 12:27pm

shouldn't "Head Coach" be in quotes there? or perhaps it should be Norv the Alleged Head Coach.

I too lived in San Diego for many years, and except for the Super Bowl year, you'd've been surprised to find out they even have a team.

Any truth to the rumor that if Norv really does get canned that the big head of Rich Kotite might be sighted looming over El Cajon?

11. As a Colts fan, I say viva el Norvo! (Of course I say that NOW. I may change my tune after week 12 or whenever they play when he suddenly morphs into a competent HC or his talented squad just decides to be their own HC).

I'm a SoCal native living in AZ for the past couple years so I obviously have a preference where the game is played. As to the Chargers not having a solid fanbase, you'd be surprised how much room there is on a bandwagon. The past couple of years we've managed a pretty good home crowd, especially last year. I won't comment on the horridness that was the late 90's early 00's

I've also heard the LA Colosseum as a possible venue for the game. I would love that, being in LA, to get to see a game in person this year. I'm still opposed to having a team here permanently, but I'll make an exception for this weekend.

#10, I don't know about that. Very few of the California residents I know (living in San Diego) are actually from this state.

re 10: that's not true. Most californians are from somewhere else (mexico?). I am actually a native californian and I've been to 35 other states. So I know they exist. Now, do I want to live there? Not really. A lot of them kinda suck in comparison. But I know they're there!

Why are the words "postponed" and "canceled" doing in the header? The article says nothing about either option, does it?

I'm from Dallas and currently live in San Diego (though I'm in exile in Orange County this week). I can tell you that very few people in Dallas care about either the Chargers or the Texans, but the game would sell out because people there love football and need something to fill the void left by the Dallas bye week.

Personally, I think the Chargers should take a page from the Hornets and go to Oklahoma. That state has already demonstrated its willingness to root for a pro team that's on loan.
If they called themselves the San Diego/Oklahoma City Chargers (or something) for that one game, it would be the first time in history that "Charger fans" made up more than 50% of the people attending any sporting event.
In fact, I think we should just make Oklahoma the "home away from home" for any displaced pro team, and Oklahoma City can start calling itself "the fallback city."

I think you can safely pick the Giants and root against them in this game.

I'm surprised that mayor Oscar Goldman (yes that is his name) hasn't made a big splash yet and offered Las Vegas as an emergency game site. It's likely to have a pro-Charger fan base, and he's been trying to get into the NFL's good graces for years, now.

The reason that Qualcomm Stadium is wrought with opposing fans is simple: San Diego is on everyone's 'Vacation Game' schedule. When the schedule is released, fans peruse the Away games, looking for an ideal sport vacation. And there is no better place than San Diego. Yes, their team is likely to head home with a loss but their whole vacation experience more than makes up for it. How do they get tickets? With the advent of Internet sites - StubHub, eBay and Craigslist, you'll find someone willing to sell their tickets. But are there really Chargers fans? I grew up in MD but followed the Chargers instead of the Colts because they were far more exciting. Now, I live in SD County so I can enjoy a year-round sports vacation.

Re #25: While he wasn't clear about it, I don't think he meant 'immigrant'. I think he meant 'from another state and/or country'. In which case he might be correct.

Am I just being stupidly naive in thinking that they should just hold the game at Qualcomm? Free tickets for refugees and firefighters? The tax break and PR would nearly cover the lost revenue.
