The new Parcells administration hasn't wasted time redefining the Miami Dolphins, waiving nine players on Monday. Among the castoffs were quarterback Trent Green, acquired by Miami just one year ago, and receiver Marty Booker, who put up a 48 percent Catch Rate, a -4.5 DPAR and one touchdown despite being targeted 105 times. Booker ranked 26th in DPAR in 2006, though. He might be a good pickup elsewhere. The linked AP report says that Green's cut was prompted by financial constraints and that his time with the Dolphins might continue, but it would seem sensible that because this isn't a team that's going to compete for anything but a high draft pick under the best circumstances, the best thing to do is to get the franchise cornerstone quarterback now and watch him go. Green also suffered two major concussions in a 13-month period, and the 37-year-old veteran might be best served by retirement, especially since his release could have been timed with a sundial last year.
Offensive tackle L.J. Shelton and defensive tackle Keith Traylor, both starters in 2007, were also cut.
Green should be a pretty solid analyst for someone. I hope he walks away from the game while he still can.
Dolphins no luck with old Chiefs Qb. Chiefs didn't get very far with him either.Time for T Green to retire.
The release of Trent Green is obviously a clear signal that we should expect the un-retirement of Vinny Testeverde. And while we're at it, bring back Richie Anderson and Keyshawn Johnson.
Marty Booker great receiver on bad team. Almost one of 5 receivers ever to catch 100 passes in two straight seasons except for idiot coordinator John Shoop. Uses crazy alien hands to catch everything thrown his way.
Hmm, that was a pretty poor Raiderjoe imitation. Yeah, I'm a Marty Booker homer, and I would love to see him come back to the Bears. As long as it isn't for too much money. Also, the alien hands thing was a something his teammates used to joke around about because they were so big.
I'd love to see Trent Green as an announcer or analyst. He rarely got much air time as a player, but his charisma, intelligence (never spoke in old clichés) and clever sense of humor always broke through, and he's very articulate.
I remember Joe Toledo as being a former TE who should have been a "prospect" of Houck, he had a ton of potential and was labeled a sleeper in the draft two years ago. Hope he can catch up with another team and develop in the blind side protector everyone seemed to see in him.
Okay, so Green had to go, this is clear. But now, how many draft picks has Miami wasted on QBs over the last 5 years or so? I don't understand why they didn't just suck it up and use a high draft pick on one at some point. Sure, there were some lean QB years there but come on, there was no one that caught their eye? Or does anyone really think Beck is the answer?
Oh well, at least we managed to get a mediocre kick returner....
Regarding Booker, I think he will be a pretty good pick up for some team out there. He may not have looked that good this year, but I think he suffers from what I like to call Chambers Syndrome, which is basically a fate that befalls any receiver unfortunate enough to be the primary target in this offense. (don't worry, I won't start that argument again).
#4
Marty Booker's hands are like shovels. They almost look like clown hands.
The dolphins seems to be on a sensible, reasonable track. For the first time in what seems a decade, they have a plan.
#3 - I haven't looked so this isn't a joke but I wouldn't be surprised - have Dave Meggett and Maurice Carthon secured coaching positions on this team?
You know who might be a great seat warmer (especially, if they draft Matt Ryan)?
"And at starting QB for YOUR Miami Dolphins, please welcome number 19, from Marshall University, Chaaaaaaaaaaaad Penningtonnnnnnnnnnnn!"
No way the Jets let him go to the Dolphins.
#10: Carthon is the RBs coach in Arizona. Meggett has bigger problems to worry about (click my name).
Booker should go to the Chargers or Patriots and magically transform into a great receiver. It worked for Welker and Chambers.
L.J. Shelton is the surprise of the cuts to me. The line played ok last year. The 3 cuts at tackle would indicate that the team has a new idea about what kind of linemen they want.
That idea is Flozell Adams.
Green = Should have retired
Booker = Old and has a high cap #
Traylor = Old and wasn't very good last year
Toledo = Couldn't stay off the injury list
Finally, we see some fairly smart moves from the Dolphins. I think they have proven consistently that you cannot win with a bunch of overpriced old guys, and it seems like they are clearing out some of that dead weight.
I imagine that these guys won't be the only ones who become casualties of the Parcells regime. I imagine that Joey Porter, too, is very near the end of his stay in Miami. I cannot see Porter staying around Miami for beyond a year or more. Too much money, and too old of a player.
And for the record, no I really don't think anyone in Miami really believes Beck is the answer. I imagine, if at all possible, they will trade down and perhaps take a shot at Matt Ryan. Either way, I do not expect to see them continue the same route that organization has taken on QBs since Marino left.

"Marty Booker’s hands are like shovels. They almost look like clown hands."
I am not sure I agree with that. I think what we have learned is that at this point, anyone who is the number 1 in Miami is going to have trouble. Chambers caught 39% of his passes last year as the number 1 in Miami, and as soon as he got out of there, it was up to 51%. Booker caught 61% of his passes last year when he wasn't the primary target; as soon as he became the primary target this year, that number drops to 48.
I don't think he is great or anything, but I think he can be a productive addition to a team with a decent offense.
9: "For the first time in what seems a decade, they have a plan."
What do you mean? Miami has always had a plan. That plan was, "trade away all our first day draft picks for crappy players so we can all sleep in on Saturday".
17: "Either way, I do not expect to see them continue the same route that organization has taken on QBs since Marino left."
I hope that you are right on this. I'm just sorry it took them so long to figure this out.
17- Joey Porter is an old player? Do you say the same thing about Adalis Thomas?
18- I am not sure if the "plan" reference was refering to when Nick Saban said he wasn't pursing Bama but then bolted for there a week later. Wayne was at the press conference asking for "suggestions".
Can you believe it? The owner of the team asking for "suggestions" on what to do?
re 18:
I think you misunderstand, Marty Booker's hand are physically enormous.
20: Okay, I get it now. I thought it was implying something else. Oops.
Joey Porter is an old player? Do you say the same thing about Adalis Thomas?
I should have probably been a bit more in-depth when I said that.
Thomas and Porter are the same age -- only five months separates them -- but their career paths are seemingly headed in a bit of a different direction. Thomas was a high-priced free agent last year who the Pats out-bid everyone else, while Porter was a guy who was cut by the Steelers because they thought he was on the downhill. The Steelers look pretty bright now, as his replacement did well, and Porter didn't play all that well in Miami.
Also, I'm thinking that Porter's off-field antics probably aren't going to play too well with Parcells. I doubt he is too tolerant the next time he starts a fight, gets shot in the ass, gets ejected, has his dogs kill miniature horses, runs his mouth to the president, calls someone a faggot, etc., etc.
Moreover, I think the Pats and Dolphins are in very different situations. The Pats are trying to win right now, and have the ability to do so. On the other hand, the Dolphins are atrocious and Porter may very well be done by the time they can even get competitive again. I just don't see why a team obviously in rebuilding mode would pay that much money for a guy like Porter.
I figure he sticks around another year, maybe two, his cap number gets reduced, and then he gets cut.
I can say with certainty that if the Bears could pick up Mighty Marty Booker to replace Muhsin Muhammad and it didn't cost them an additional dollar, it's a no-brainer at this point. Marty can also throw a beautiful spiral, which the Bears can use.
22: Yea, but would they play him at QB or WR? :)
Well I see you do know both players but it annoys me when people call Porter " old" and a guy like Thomas " in his prime", or even " young".
Do people do that because Porter is "old" compared to Channing Crowder and Thomas is " young" next to Seau and Bruschi or because they just " learned" about Thomas last year when they learned he can play all 11 positions at a pro bowl level.
I see your point. Bryan Cox was kind of a hot head and Parcels let him follow him around. Maybe he will like an Angry Joey P.
Are you guys kidding about John Beck? The guy was great in college, his highlight reel is amazing, his only knock is his age, they invested a #2 in him, and now you want to say good bye and good riddance just because he stank as a rookie? That makes no sense at all. Hall-of-Fame QBs stink as rookies. No way you just give up on him. You can't just say "oh, I fired the guy who drafted him, therefore he stinks." And last year's draft is looking sharp, overall.
btw, Beck was one of 2 or 3 guys Ireland (or Parcells, I forget which) talked to right after they arrived in town. That tells me that he is in their plans. I sure hope so, anyway.
Zach Thomas just got cut.
A sad day for Dolphins fans, but unfortunately was necessary.
Classy move by Parcells not to dump him along with scrubs like Anthony Alabi and Joe Toledo.
Don't blame Beck. He will be playing for his 3rd scheme in 3 years next year.
Booker is in New England this week for a visit. Pats offered Zach Thomas a contract yesterday, but he's going to New Orleans this week before he decides where he goes.
