FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer breaks the news that Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud has been dealt to the Buffalo Bills for third- and fifth-round draft picks.
Also, you know the salary cap's too high when teams are throwing millions in the direction of, and fighting over, kickers. Former Seattle kicker Josh Brown and his agent, Rob Roche, engaged in what Seahawks team president Tim Ruskell called "the most-weird (sic) negotiations I've ever been involved with," according to Clare Farnsworth of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The Seahawks met every number Brown's camp threw at them, and Brown's camp took the final five-year, $14 million offer to the St. Louis Rams, a dome team closer to Brown's home state of Oklahoma. Mission accomplished, as veteran Jeff Wilkins had just announced his retirement Friday morning. The Falcons and Chiefs were also in play for Brown's services. Brown now passes Adam Vinatieri as the highest-paid kicker in NFL history.
In the time it took me to write this XP, I discovered that former Chargers cornerback Drayton "Helmet-to-Helmet" Florence agreed to terms with the Jags, ex-Jets safety Erik Coleman signed a four-year deal with the Falcons, and defensive end Chris Clemons moved from the Raiders to the Eagles with a new five-year deal. Jump back!
Good for Clemons. He was treated poorly by Gregg Williams and the 'Skins, and I hope he does well against them.
Another DT moves and the Broncos miss out.
At least John Lynch isn't retiring, which is ..... nice.
This is the first I'm hearing that the Seahawks were prepared to make Brown the highest paid kicker in the league. He's good, but I never thought of him as being best in the league. Top 10, sure, maybe Top 5. Smart use of leverage by Brown's camp, I suppose.
At least the Rams blew their money on a guy who has been in the top five on kickoffs the last two seasons.
thats 3 real good dt moves in the last few days and the zeroth that the seahawks got, bummer!
Damn, is Stroud really only worth a 3rd and a 5th?
#6 Tom C, at this point, yes. He's fallen pretty far pretty fast hasn't he? What's the money like for Clemons? If it's not too ridiculous, I think the Eagles made a good move there. I wish the Raiders had given him a bit of Tommy Kelly's money.
Re: 2 -- I too was wondering when the heck Denver was going to get a DT, seeing as are they going NO WHERE until they pick up one more quality guy at the spot. But at least they've signed yet another legit #3 receiver. So we've got a few of those now.
Actually, the statement "you know the cap is too high when people are throwing money at the kicker" is the opposite of the truth.
The objective of the cap is to balance the teams so you dont end up with a Yankees situation, not to screw the players out of money they would otherwise be getting, therefore if teams are even willing to pay their kickers more, it means that the cap is correct. I think that as long as at least 60% of the teams use the full cap room, its a good cap.
With Cleveland picking up Stroud and Clemons, is there an over/under on the broncos trading for some now unwanted Cleveland linemen?
6: Well, that's the question, isn't it? He was great in his prime, but he hasn't been the same the last two seasons, with injuries, microfracture surgery and suspension all taking their toll.
His career numbers to date aren't that dissimilar to Kris Jenkins', who was also traded for 3rd and 5th round picks, so it seems to be the market rate.
BILLS: Former South Florida linebacker Kawika Mitchell signed a five-year contract with Buffalo after having a career season in his only year with the Giants.
49ERS: Receiver Isaac Bruce agreed to a two-year deal worth $6 million, one day after the Rams released one of the most prolific receivers in NFL history. The 49ers also formally announced their stadium will be known as Candlestick Park for the rest of its days.
Also, Demorrio Williams to the Chiefs.
Gibril Wilson is a huge loss for the Super Bowl Champs.
