Source: DeAngelo Hall to Raiders for Second-Rounder

Former Atlanta Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who has been asking for a trade out of the organization for a long time, got his wish today. ESPN.com reports that the eighth overall pick in 2004 will depart for Oakland in exchange for the Raiders’ second-round pick in 2008. The Raiders and Hall are reportedly close on a contract that will pay the player Asante Samuel money (of course, Al Davis is giving Asante Samuel money to backup centers these days, but I digress). In the short term, this means that the Oakland cornerback battery of Hall and the more reliable Nnamdi Asomugha (who received the team’s franchise tender for 2008) will be well worth watching.

  1. I’m shocked - shocked - that the Raiders would trade for a past his prime player then massively overpay him.

    Shocked!

    :: RobM — 3/15/2008 @ 6:22 pm

  2. DeAngelo Hall is past his prime? Ouch. He only turns 25 in November and had another solid season-someone better tell Philly to get the rocking chair ready for Asante Samuel a guy they just gave a huge deal to who just turned 27. I think he is overrated, but he is better than 85% (probably 90%) of the starting corners in the NFL.

    :: lionsbob — 3/15/2008 @ 6:31 pm

  3. do you really think the raiders will get a better corner with a second round pick? Deangalo is only 24, definitely not past his prime.

    Anyone notice how the falcons now have 3 second round picks? They could easily trade back into the first round and still have a second round pick.

    :: Joe SKolnik — 3/15/2008 @ 7:12 pm

  4. Hey, I reported this like 2 hours before you on your own message board!!! ;)

    1,

    How is Hall pst is prime????? That’s lunacy. He’s like 25!!!!

    I already gave my analysis of the trade on the board, so I’ll leave that there.

    :: thestar5 — 3/15/2008 @ 7:20 pm

  5. If this goes down, the Raiders become quite the intriguing defense.

    For Atlanta, this is a great move, long-term. They likely would have lost Hall in free agency in 2009, and now they go into the draft with four of the first 49 picks.

    Short-term, though, that secondary is absolutely wretched.

    :: Vince Verhei — 3/15/2008 @ 7:21 pm

  6. Well, it’s going to be tougher to throw on the Raiders. Fortunately with their putrid offense and front seven their opponents could just string together a couple of 12 minute 20 rush drives and salt the game away 9-0.

    :: RowdyRoddyPiper — 3/15/2008 @ 7:45 pm

  7. re: 3

    I think with the holes the Falcons have that an extra 2nd round pick would probably be more valuable than moving up. I suppose if there was someone they were targeting it might happen. Did you have any particular players in mind?

    :: NY expat — 3/15/2008 @ 7:48 pm

  8. I used to think Hall was madly overrated in 2006, but then people started to talk about him as overrated while he actually got better. Normally I’d think trading a second rounder for a pretty good 24 year old corner is a good move, but if Hall raised hell in Atlanta, what the heck is he going to do in Oakland? And I ask that as a Raiders fan. Also, I don’t pretend to understand the NFL salary cap, but how can Oakland possibly afford him after throwing money around all offseason?

    :: Duff Soviet Union — 3/15/2008 @ 7:58 pm

  9. So Oakland’s secondary might have Asomugha, Hall, Washington, and Routt at corner. Plus Huff at safety.

    Does either Washington or Routt get traded?

    :: lionsbob — 3/15/2008 @ 8:04 pm

  10. good chance F Washignton get traded now. Raiders have best cornebracks in NFL. D Hall and N Asomugha best tandem in league since Lester Hayes and M Haynes from great raiders teams of 1980s. Current Raiders team definitely going to playoffs in 2008 now and another Superbowl win is not far away. Season cant get here fats enough. Going to start drnoking soon to celebreate another great Raiders move. !!!!!!!!

    :: Raiderjoe — 3/15/2008 @ 8:19 pm

  11. I’ve never been the biggest DeAngelo Hall fan, but it’s probably worth noting that Atlanta did rate 10th in the league against number 1 receivers last year according to DVOA.

    :: D — 3/15/2008 @ 8:25 pm

  12. lionsbob -

    Routt has better size, instincts, and the dreaded “upside” as compared to Washington. From that standpoint (all other things excluded - contracts, etc.) Routt should be kept over Fabian in your hypothetical trading scenario.

    Always interesting to see where the Raiders will go in the draft - we bolster the interior D-line to go with a solid secondary and we have the makings of a tough defense. Then again, we can always use a “tweener” TE from from the University Behind Levitz with blazing speed last seen wowing the scouts at the intermural flag football championships.

    Regarding overpaying - meh. Like rating a draft, a player, a contract, until the actual returns are in, you rolls the dice and takes your chances. Granted, the Raiders have a history of pissing upwind…

    My uneducated guess at the moment says Jake Long or Vernon Gholston. In the meantime, I’d be happy to see Hall opposite Nnamdi and returning a kick or two.

    I now turn it over to Raiderjoe.

    :: Fisher — 3/15/2008 @ 8:30 pm

  13. good chance Raiders take D McFadden as I wrote months ago. Team good at RB, but would be great with McFadden. McFadden with J russell would be best RB-QB tandem in league. Raiders going on the upswing soon, making moves to fo to Superbowl

    :: Raiderjoe — 3/15/2008 @ 8:53 pm

  14. this seems questionable to me mostly because it cuts out Fabian Washingtons place in the secondary, and while I assume he hasnt been playing well (I was watching Asomugha on virtually every snap of the Oakland games I watched last year), as Aaron posted last year corners who underperform early in their careers can frequently make a giant step forward in their 3rd or 4th year. Seeing as how Washington will probably not get enough playing time to try for that jump, I really amd not a fan of the move. Plus now the raiders have spent 4 first round picks and a 2nd on their secondary in the last few years (Washington, Asomugha, Buchannon, Huff, and now Hall). I think at some point the returns you get by improving the secondary become drastically lower than the returns you would get upgrading the pass rush or run D.

    Plus sending an attitude problem to Oakland. That worked well for Moss.

    :: MarkV — 3/15/2008 @ 9:01 pm

  15. As a Falcons fan, I hate this. I’ve never been a big fan of the guy, but I don’t think a second rounder is teriffic value for him. He’s a four-year NFL vet and is only 24 years old. His best years are probably still ahead of him. Granted, he is kind of a pain in the ass, but Mike Smith was apparently very high on him from day one and he seems like the kind of promising young player you want to build around.

    :: langsty — 3/15/2008 @ 9:25 pm

  16. Amazing… Asamougha and Hall will be fun to watch.

    :: James Christensen — 3/15/2008 @ 10:53 pm

  17. Raiders have the best starting Duo at CB in the NFL. Nobody has depth Raiders have at CB. You want to play with three and four reciever set, Raiders have the ability to matchup with those recievers. What this does is strengthen Raiders nickel defense tremendously. Asomugha , Routt and F washington all prefer playing outside position. I think when teams go three wide D Hall will pick up slot reciever. (move inside). Thats where teams hurt the raiders alot .

    What does this mean when Raiders acquire another pass rusher De in the draft. You will have two lethal passrushers .(d Burgess and draft choice) With very good passrushers atDT- Tom Kelly and G Warren/ William Joseph You throw in two of the best cover LBs( Thomas Howard and Kirk Morrison. Not to mention one of the best cover safeties in Michael huff. Gibril Wilson no sloch in coverage. You don’t want to get in obvious passing situations against the Raiders.

    Raiders strengthen their run defense by acquiring Gibril Wilson-sure handed tackler) D Hall another pretty good tackler. Tom kelly a BIg uipgrade from Sapp in defending the run. IF raiders sign Kevin Carter he will be a nice run stuffer at base de. D Burgess who was too undersized at Base DE, will move to RDE on the run downs(better matchup)

    Raiders defense going to be pretty sick. Offense will be good. team going to playoffs no doubt

    :: Raiderjoe — 3/15/2008 @ 11:32 pm

  18. Without trying to sound like the know-it-all, this one doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

    I think we have to assume that the Raiders won’t be able to keep both Hall and Asamougha. Hall, as mentioned earlier, will be seeking the huge contract extension shortly, and the Raiders have already franchised Asamougha. Considering how much money top corners are getting, I see no way in which it would be feasible that they could sign both under the salary cap. With all of the huge bucks they’ve had to shell out to the top draft picks they’ve had so much of lately (Russell, Huff, etc.), they would have to shell out so much money to these two that they’d have to finish out the roster with guys on the league minimum just to stay under the cap. They will only be able to keep one of these guys.

    Second, we all know of Hall and his antics in ATL. Now, true, Atlanta was a terrible place to be, but if there is any place worse than Atlanta, it most certainly has to be Oakland. If he was viewed as a cancer in Atlanta, how in the world is that going to change in Oakland?

    Third, yes the Raiders should have a very good secondary now, but so what? Their run defense is still going to be bad, and it’s not like their offense is going to be putting up many points either. The problem in Oakland is not pass defense — they finished 11th according to FO in pass defense in 2007, and 5th in 2006 — it’s the terrible run defense and the terrible offense. Those are the two major problems with the Raiders, and all of this Hall / Asamougha stuff doesn’t do anything to fix that.

    Again, all of this just doesn’t make any sense to me. I don’t think it’s a good move for the Raiders, and I don’t think it’s a good move for Hall. The only beneficiary I see is the Falcons; they essentially get an extra draft pick for a guy who they were probably going to lose to free agency in the near future anyway.

    :: PaulH — 3/16/2008 @ 12:33 am

  19. This must be Rob Ryan’s wet dream. With all those cb’s to play with, imagine what new blitz schemes can he dream up. Raiders still won’t win many games, but will be fun to watch on defense.

    On the flipside: every time a preseason #1 cb duo in the league plays together, doesn’t one end up performing poorly? Or is my mind skewed from recent examples of McAlister/Rolle and Bailey/Bly?

    :: hawk_fan — 3/16/2008 @ 3:56 am

  20. Hall is solid as a starter. He doesn’t even seem like all that bad a guy(last season, his issues were football related), unlike, say Pacman. Yeah, he wants more than he’s worth, but so does every periphery player. If the Raiders bury Schweigert on the depth chart, I’ll be pissed.

    :: Dice — 3/16/2008 @ 4:07 am

  21. The problem is not giving up a second round pick for Hall - in and of itself that’s probably quite a good value. The problem is of course going to be the contract. A corner drafted in the second round might not be as good as Hall, but he would be an awful lot cheaper. And if, as mooted above and on PFT, this impacts their long term ability to retain Asomugha, this is a disastrous trade. Unless Asomugha has let it be known that he wants out and will in no way consider a long term offer to remain a Raider. In that scenario, provided they have the 2008 cap room, the deal just about makes sense.

    :: Mr Shush — 3/16/2008 @ 6:09 am

  22. I guess the Falcons are counting on Chris Houston stepping up. I only saw him once last season but he stood out as being seriously overmatched.

    Looking at Atlanta’s depth chart, though, and its easy schedule, if Mike Smith can get some production out of his rookies, this has many of the hallmarks of a “dark horse” for 2008.

    :: ammek — 3/16/2008 @ 6:24 am

  23. The happiest man in the NFL right now is Nnamdi Asomugha. Barring injury or a catastrophic loss of form, 12 months from now he is going to rich beyond the dreams of avarice.

    :: James, London — 3/16/2008 @ 8:29 am

  24. This will be the best or among the best secondaries in the NFL. But a strange move in that the rest of the division is run-heavy on offense. They’re going to be paying a lot of money for guys to cover… all…those…AFC West…receivers.

    :: Herm? — 3/16/2008 @ 1:33 pm

  25. Yeah, but Hall and Asomugha can both play on an island with their man for much of the game, allowing a safety to come into the box. PLus, I think the othe rposters have it right about Asomugha leaving soon. Hall’s deal is smaller than Asomugha’s eventual deal.

    :: Dice — 3/16/2008 @ 4:15 pm

  26. Can we stop gossiping (is that a word?) and start making news?
    I guess it makes a good discusion. Is D Hall a good trade for a #2 pick?
    Let’s be a spoiler and say: YES. The chance that you get a ‘D Hall’ for a 2nd rounder is below 50%, give and take the age and salery.
    I got ESPN or FOX for this.

    :: Theo, Netherlands — 3/16/2008 @ 5:00 pm

  27. Re: # 10

    Wait, Raiderjoe, you mean you didn’t already “start drnoking… to celebreate another great Raiders move”?

    Seriously, there is some thought that the Raiders will draft Dorsey from LSU to replace Sapp. That Oakland D could really be something.

    :: DP — 3/16/2008 @ 5:48 pm

  28. You can’t just disregard age and salary: those are huge factors in evaluating any trade.

    As for the lack of pass offense in the AFC West, the division contains two excellent young quarterbacks in Rivers and Cutler, and two very talented receivers in Marshall and Bowe. Moreover, if by some miracle the Raiders make the playoffs, they will at some point face Brady-Moss-Welker and/or Manning-Harrison-Wayne.

    :: Mr Shush — 3/16/2008 @ 8:34 pm

  29. Seriously now… if an FO staffer ever makes it to Raiderjoe country, can we PLEASE get a sit down interview, with pics? Pretty please?

    :: masoch — 3/16/2008 @ 10:23 pm

  30. The happiest man in the NFL right now is Nnamdi Asomugha. Barring injury or a catastrophic loss of form, 12 months from now he is going to rich beyond the dreams of avarice.

    Oh, I don’t know about that. My avaricious dreams are pretty creative.

    :: TomC — 3/16/2008 @ 11:11 pm

  31. #29:

    I think some things are best left a mystery…

    :: Andy — 3/17/2008 @ 11:40 am

  32. Actually, I think this is probably a good deal for both teams… Nnamdi is likely gone next year, but the Raiders get a decent replacement… Falcons get a good pick for a guy they’d lose anyway. As much as I hate the Raiders (as a Bronco fan, its kind of my religion), I’ll give them some credit here.

    Raiders will still struggle though, because the rest of their team sucks… Russell needs at least a year or 2, if ever, and the guys in the trenches on both sides of the ball are marginal at best. (Damn… this is sounding more and more like my Donkeys, except that our QB has at least shown something…)

    :: cjfarls — 3/17/2008 @ 11:49 am

  33. Al Davis always wants to win this year. What happens in 2009 is of no relevance at this time.

    That said, having Hall around on a longterm contract with other CBs available cuts down Asamoghua’s bargaining power.

    Added to that, who are you going to throw against? Either Hall or Asamoghua is going to get found out a little this season, or they’re going to shut down every other team’s top WRs.

    :: Bright Blue Shorts — 3/17/2008 @ 3:59 pm

  34. The Falcons are clearly in a rebuilding mode for the next 2 years. Hence, I think getting something to be a better team in 2-3 years is a good decision. The expectation that they will suck worse next year is not a huge surprise. Hopefully, they choose to build inside-out (lots of lineman in first year along with possible WR/TE/CB, QB in 2nd year studying and sitting on the bench along with good secondary, RB in 3rd year who can actually play right away as well as SS/LB/DE).

    Typically, the best value for the dollar can be found in or around the second round of the draft. It sounds like Atlanta will have a lot of those and this could help them if they do not squander the opportunity.

    The Raiders may have the best CB tandem this year (although I rate Asante higher in personality, learning, and successful risk-taking than I do Hall). However, does anyone besides RaiderJoe believe that this is the final piece needed for Oakland to win the Super Bowl?

    :: Pete — 3/18/2008 @ 8:16 am

  35. #33 - You forgot option C: no-one calls a pass against the Raiders all season, because when you can run for 6.5 yards per carry, why would you?

    :: Mr Shush — 3/18/2008 @ 8:31 pm

  36. Re 35:

    Now I’m curious at what the lowest number of passes attempted a defense has faced in the DVOA era.

    :: Tom D — 3/20/2008 @ 1:49 am

  37. I think this is agreat move for oakland already having Asamougha now that they added Hall thier “D” is even better.

    :: Don — 3/21/2008 @ 1:33 pm

  38. Yo,#33 is very dumb!

    :: Don — 3/21/2008 @ 1:40 pm
