The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that the Saints have released 2007 starting tight end Eric Johnson. Johnson has had a productive, but injury-prone, career, and with Jeremy Shockey on board, Johnson's recovery from an ankle injury made him expendable. That the Saints were willing to sign him to just a one-year deal in the offseason, and the long-time Shockey rumors, leave this as less than a surprise. Johnson caught 48 passes in 2007, but finished 26th in DYAR among tight ends -- far behind backup Billy Miller, who will fill the reserve role behind Shockey.
The Saints used their free roster spot to sign second-round pick Tracy Porter, a speedy cornerback who will try to help raise a certain section of the team's secondary to a status above that of a large area in the middle of the defense.
Yep--with Shockey coming over, it was inevitable. On nola.com (I believe), Johnson said his timetable for returning from the ankle prob. (he sprained it working out on his own in Feb.) has been "two or three weeks" ever since he sprained it. He's probably done, as most teams don't need an oft-injured TE--although somebody might sign him for depth. Anyone think your team needs him?
I'd be happy if the Seahawks signed him at an affordable price.
When he's healthy, he's a decent to good receiver.
He'd look good as a 3rd-down guy for the Bengals.
Watched him a lot as a 49ers fan, and in my utterly-unscientific-and-unrigorous impression, he was a pretty good pass-catching tight end, like a B+ to A- kind of guy. And he went to Yale, so that's cool.
I'd be happy if Buffalo signed him cheap. They could use a receiving TE.
What if the Giants signed him as a replacement? I know is seems like one of those fantasy football kind of moves to trade and then pick up the droped guy, but Johnson he is a lot better than Michael Matthews.
