Scoop of the year for Jay Glazer, or just another wrong turn in a soap opera full of faints and fakes?
Update: Michael Smith is confirming. Oh boy.

Do you think Assante Samuel is regretting his move to the NFC now?
:: RickD — 8/6/2008 @ 11:02 pm
The Brett Favre era in Green Bay is now officially over. But Favre’s legendary career is not.
Why do people say “official[ly]” when they mean “nobody has publicly announced it, so I will”? I mean, two sentences later “The exact compensation was not immediately known” - that pretty much describes “unofficial”.
That said, interesting move by all: New York will embrace him, and probably crush him. as famous as he is, i can’t imagine he could survive the New York Media, especially if he reverts to gunslinging (though Peter King will love having him closer to NBC studios).

J! E! T! S! JETS! JETS! JETS!
Oh man, this is simply fantastic. I have no idea if this actually WILL be a good thing, especially considering I’ve been a Chad Pennington fan for some time now. I’d be sad to see him go.
And Favre is old, a gunslinger, yadda yadda, a turnover machine.
I’m sure the FO guys can and will clarify the actual impact soon enough.
But as a Jets fan, my God, this is the most exciting thing to happen for us since Doug Brien shanked those kicks in ‘05.
:: Kevin — 8/6/2008 @ 11:04 pm
Joe Namath is no longer the greatest quarterback in Jets history!!!
:: Staubach12 — 8/6/2008 @ 11:08 pm
Good, the afc east division games may be watchable this year.
I’m sure favre will be passing to bubba franks alot in the first month until he gets the offense down.

Does this move backfire on the Packers? I have to think the Jets will cut Pennington now, and if he ends up in Minnesota…
:: Disco Stu — 8/6/2008 @ 11:13 pm
ESPN’s announcing it’s official.
I suppose this paves the way for Chad Pennington to be traded to the Vikings, right? There’s no chance he’s still a Jet come September, is there?
:: Justin Zeth — 8/6/2008 @ 11:14 pm
To be fair, this could be a good fit for Favre. The Jets have excellent receivers in Coles and Cotchery, and they have been held back the past few years by Pennington’s lack of arm strength. (Should Pennington go to Minnesota? Well, he would be an improvement on Tavaris Jackson. But that’s not saying much.)
I think it’s clear that Favre still has a good deal of arm strength. I’m more concerned about his endurance, and how that could affect his accuracy when he gets tired (see OT against the Giants for example).
ESPN is asking the silly question whether the Jets are now a better team than the Packers. Thankfully, everybody they’ve asked so far has said the Packers. The Jets still have little running game or run defense to speak of.
The addition of Favre could make them a playoff contender, esp. given the easy schedule for the AFC East. But I wouldn’t expect them to win any big games.
:: RickD — 8/6/2008 @ 11:21 pm
re: 4
I wouldn’t go that far.
:: RickD — 8/6/2008 @ 11:22 pm
I was ambivalent about how much he would help the Vikings, a team which would entail a non-steep learning curve for Favre, and one that only asks the passing game to keep a defense from putting eight or more in the box. I’m not an expert on the AFC East, but this doesn’t seem to be a good fit for a 39 year old qb.
Advanced Football Statistics has done some interesting work which argues that Favre’s numbers last year are inflated by an extremely good performace by the receivers in terms of yards after catch. Who knows? It just seems to me that the Jets don’t have enough talent yet to maximize the odds of an old qb accentuating his strengths while hiding his inevitable weaknesses.
If Favre reports there will be no doubt that he really, really, wants to play.
:: Will Allen — 8/6/2008 @ 11:22 pm
RickD, I was also surprised to learn that Favre’s completion percentage on throws of more than 15 yards last year was below league average. I just know the Jets personnel very well; how well are the Jets likely to run the ball?
:: Will Allen — 8/6/2008 @ 11:25 pm
“I just DON’T know the Jets personnel…”, of course.

Re: 9–It was, of course, a joke
:: Staubach12 — 8/6/2008 @ 11:33 pm
This will be discussed ad nauseum, even moreso since he’s going to New York.
I don’t really think this changes much. The Jets receivers are pretty under-rated, I think. I was personally hoping he’d go to Tampa Bay and that Garcia would go to Minnesota. But I’m also glad to see that Garcia has kept a job for once. That guy has never gotten a fair shake.
:: socctty — 8/6/2008 @ 11:41 pm
re: Will Allen
FO lists the Jets as having the 28th best rushing attack in the NFL in 2007. It was easy for good defenses (like the Pats) to clog the box and overplay the run, since everybody knew Pennington couldn’t throw a deep ball.
The Jets have since picked up Mike Faneca and in theory they should be able to run a little bit if Favre can keep defenses honest. But I still think they’ll have the 4th best rushing attack in the division.
They won’t be a great team, but aside from two games against the Pats, they’ll have a very easy schedule.
:: RickD — 8/6/2008 @ 11:47 pm
#10: I thought Coles and Cotchery were pretty prototypical yards-after-catch guys, which is half the reason why the Jets offense managed to score points at all.
:: Pat — 8/6/2008 @ 11:56 pm
#16: I’m going to assume when you look back on that comment you’re going to go “doh, I knew his name was Alan Faneca!”

Wonder how EA feels about that Madden cover… hahahahahahahahahaaha
I think this reflects poorly on Favre, he’s a drama-queen, and didn’t want to go and compete in Green Bay… its the NFL… everyone has to compete for their job!
This is going to back-fire big time… Favre is gonna learn the Jets playbook? Really? Hah! In a month? Seriously, you were fun to watch, but now we all know, it’s all about Brett Favre… maybe he’s got some dirt on Peter King which is why he’s able to force the SI writer to write about him all the time…
Our long national nightmare is over! (Or probably just getting started!)

Those six teams form each conference.

(pounds fist) I wished Favre would at least go to a team in a good spot or a toss-up division. Now the only thing to look forward to is the biennial “Brady’s NBA-Scoring Offense against Favre’s Unfamiliarity With Plays”.
Is he really going to be satisfied only competing for a wild-card berth every year? At least with Pennie and the Jets I could feel OK about being second best in a division (and a city), but not with Brett.
Also Raiderjoe - if I ever have to watch the Raiders beat my hometown Eagles AGAIN for the Superbowl, your beer-drenched joy will be my only solace.

:: Jason — 8/7/2008 @ 2:05 am
Whatever can be the trade, Packers Organisation 1 - Favre 0.
I’m not sure Favre will be ready to face twice a year the schemes of Belichick and Sparano (Parcells).
It says more about the urge jets FO feel to win NOW than about anything else.
:: lobolafcadio — 8/7/2008 @ 2:24 am
Favre has torched Bellichick in the past, I doubt the schemes will have much effect
:: Jason — 8/7/2008 @ 2:29 am
re: 28
um, torched? really? throwing for 147 yards and 3 dump off TDs to RBs and Bubba? 6 years ago?
I don’t really think that outweighs getting creamed 35-0 by the pats in 06, but that’s just me.
And yeah, the Pack beat the Browns as well back in 95, but that’s about what we have on Favre vs BB. I’ll take my chances with Belichick, thankyouverymmuch.
:: Malene, cph — 8/7/2008 @ 2:54 am
10. I see the Favre YAC as a chicken-egg thing; did Jennings make him look good by galloping a bunch of yards after the grab, or did Favre make the play by delivering a laser in stride on a slant pattern? My knee-jerk says it’s probably more the receiver than the quarterback in these instances, but I wouldn’t completely discredit Favre for the YAC spike.
:: hector — 8/7/2008 @ 3:10 am
Well it’s definitely official now and the Jets give up a 4th round pick that rises depending on Favre’s / team performance.
If Favre settles in, I think it becomes a good trade for the Jets purely because it clarifies their QB situation. They haven’t been settled for 2-3 years. Favre could play for 1-2(3-4-5) more years which gives them time to find and development a replacement.
Question is whether he’ll settle? Beyond the playbook will Brett see the new environment as a fresh look, or will he get homesick for the old faces? Everybody’ll welcome him but will he feel at home?
:: Bright Blue Shorts — 8/7/2008 @ 3:21 am
So I’m guessing we’ll see Peter King doing the awful NBC Sunday night show at least eight times from the Jets locker (shower) room this year?
:: JFP — 8/7/2008 @ 4:15 am
Bubba Franks has no speed and can easily covered by mediocre linebackers. I find it highly unlikely that Franks can get OPEN to be an outlet for Favre.
What of the Jets tackles? Clifton/Tauscher are an incredibly underrated tandem who have always been in the lineup and always done a LOT to protect Favre. Favre doesn’t step up in the pocket. He like to roam side to side to buy time.

:: timmy — 8/7/2008 @ 7:11 am
With the additions of Faneca and Woody to the Jets line I think they should be ok running it. Thomas Jones is a solid back and Leon Washington used correctly could be excellent.
:: AmBentDonkey — 8/7/2008 @ 7:33 am
In other words, the Packers will get a 4th round pick. Can anyone see the moves the Jets made this year adding up to another six wins, which is what I’m guessing they’ll need to make the playoffs?
:: Harris — 8/7/2008 @ 7:41 am
The moves plus an easier schedule could easily = 6 wins. Assuming Favre can learn the offense in one month. Other than paying Calvin Pace more money than Lance Briggs I think the Jets made pretty good moves for immediate improvement. Not so sure about the long term but Mangini and Tannenbaum neede to keep their jobs this year.
:: AmBentDonkey — 8/7/2008 @ 7:49 am
Neither Faneca nor Woody have been any better than average for a few years now. Hell, Woodys been below average since his big FA deal. This is anecdotal…perhaps metrics will disprove. Anyway, the Jets O-line was well below average last year, so maybe an upgrade to average would be a blessing.
:: dryheat — 8/7/2008 @ 7:50 am
I would love to see the Jets trade Favre to some other team who then trades Favre to the Vikings.
:: rageon — 8/7/2008 @ 7:50 am
Re 37: Probably a third rounder. I do think Favre will take 50% of the snaps. A 2nd is pretty unlikely. I just don’t see the Jets making the playoffs. Who knows though.
:: Flounder — 8/7/2008 @ 7:51 am
Slow clap for Ted Thompson. He was presented with an impossible situation when Favre decided to come back, and probably got a 2nd-3rd rounder out of it. I think we can easily say that he won this staredown. Kudos!
P.S. I can’t stand Favre and I live in NY. Any suggestions on relocation?
:: Snack Flag — 8/7/2008 @ 8:07 am
Easier? They’ve got the the NFC East, NFC West and AFC West. Looking at the schedule, it is entirely possible they’re 2-6 going into the bye (I’m giving them the Fins and the Cards). The second half of the year isn’t as murderous, but they’d still have to go on the road to beat New England, Buffalo, Seattle and Tennessee. Giving them four wins over the second half of the season is a stretch, and that would only make them 6-10. I just don’t see how the Jets can get 10 wins out of that schedule, Favre or no Favre.
:: Harris — 8/7/2008 @ 8:09 am
I think last time Pennington faced Favre -he was winning 31 - 0 –at half time ! Finally Pennington gets a little bit of an offensive line and a receiver over 5′ 10″, and they get rid of him! And this is a QB that has actually won 2 play-off games — with a horrible offensive line, poor defense and little smurf receivers… (How many play-off games has Tony Romo won..?) How frustrating for Pennington! He knows his playbook, and he’s probably one of the smartest qbs in the league. Too bad they cant (won’t) keep him around ..
:: jets fan! — 8/7/2008 @ 8:12 am
Re: 40. If I were the Packers I would haved worded it so that if Favre started any games with Minnesota this year, the poison pill would be activated.
Without seeing the trade agreement, it’s impossible to know what it says. Reporters say it’s 3 #1s in a trade with Minnesota because that’s the simplest scenario.
:: Zac — 8/7/2008 @ 8:13 am
So does Penny go back with Herm to the Chiefs, or does Penny go to Minnesota after he is released?
I would love to fade the Jets season win total after all of the fans eat the hoopla up and push that total up.
Do you think the Jets will place 2nd among the following; Jax, Denver, Cle, Cincy, Tenn, Hou.
I would love to put down some money saying the Jets will NOT make the playoffs. Favre can’t play run defense alongside Harris and the Jets run D was pathetic.
:: Chris — 8/7/2008 @ 8:15 am
re: poison pills; maybe they can ‘green-wash’ him thru a fourth team, like say Seattle?
Holmgren doing Brett one last fat favor? Then again, I can’t see Seattle and Minnesota ever getting anything done amicably again. Would be very interesting to see how the clause is worded… man, I wish I was an NFL executive :-)

Re: Harris
NFC East? I thought NFC East played AFC East this past season.
Jets out of division schedule this year is: AFC West and NFC West, plus 3rd place TEN and CIN.
Green Bay’s out of division schedule this year is: NFC South, AFC South, plus DAL and SEA.
:: Fergasun — 8/7/2008 @ 8:38 am
M-E-T-S! METS-METS-METS!!!
It appears that the Jets have been consulting with Steve Phillips/Omar Minaya. How else to explain their feverish attempt to assemble a team that would have been a serious contender for the SB in 2002?
Seriously, though, their schedule is so easy that this move does make them legit contenders for a WC spot, although if they do sneak in it would almost certainly be one-and-done, just like 2 years ago. OTOH, if they get off to a bad start, it could be an absolute train wreck.
:: MC2 — 8/7/2008 @ 8:38 am
For some reason I have that same feeling with this trade as I did after watching Brett’s retirement speach in March.
Have the Jets moved a QB yet?
:: Jero D — 8/7/2008 @ 8:38 am
The NFC West consists of 4 beatable teams, the AFC West 3 beatable teams. 2 against the Fins, 2 against Buffalo, Cinci, Tennessee. If I were a Jets fan I wouldn’t be daunted.
:: AmBentDonkey — 8/7/2008 @ 8:40 am
#49 You’re right and I can’t fucking count. I was including the preseason and wondering why the numbers didn’t add up. It’s things like this that keep me humble. Ten wins is still unlikely, but not impossible.
:: Harris — 8/7/2008 @ 8:43 am
True, but the Jets are eminently beatable also. Just because they face 13 “beatable” teams doesn’t mean they’ll go 13-0, or even 8-5, against them. I’m sure the NFC West teams, Raiders, Chiefs, Broncos, Dolphins, Bills, Titans, and Bengals are all looking at the Jets as a “beatable” team.
Daunted is a great word. Much better than undaunted.
:: dryheat — 8/7/2008 @ 9:16 am
i’ll wager the jets don’t release pennington, a least not immediately. first the vikes would want him and might part with a late pick for him…. but also favre will want to go over that first game vs the pack with him, fill him with info to use in minnesota (though not sure how much of what favre does with his arm could be applied to pennington…
:: andrew — 8/7/2008 @ 9:26 am
I think #52 and #53 are both right. The Jets are a middling team but with a good number of experienced, decent-quality vets, and will be playing a lot of teams about on their level. They could go 10-6 as easily as they go 6-10, depending on how they do in close games.
Meaning that, I think the key question is going to be how well Favre can run the two-minute drill in NY.
(Personally, I think the Dolphins are going to be much improved — how could they not? — and the Bills have the look, to me, of a solid 8-to-10 win team. All this means, I think that the Jets don’t do any better than 3-3 against the AFC East.)
:: Geronimo — 8/7/2008 @ 9:29 am
#30, the same site has done work which strongly suggests that YAC is much more a function of receiver performance than qb performance, by looking at how receivers with high YAC numbers do when they change qbs, and vice versa. I think Aaron has done some work which indicates the same.
Like I said, I’m pretty ambivalent about Favre’s odds of playing well. I won’t be shocked if he plays well or plays poorly, but if I were forced to place a bet, I guess I’s wager on him underperforming, relative to expectations, with the Jets.
:: Will Allen — 8/7/2008 @ 9:31 am
The Vikings should definitely consider Pennington when he becomes available, but since his greatest weakness results in defenses crowding the box, which is exactly what the Vikings need a qb to prevent, I don’t know how much he really improves them.
:: Will Allen — 8/7/2008 @ 9:36 am
The biggest impact this trade may have could involve where Pennington ends up. He’s a quality passer of a certain type.
If he lands with a strong defensive team in need of a guy who can provide steady passing — he could transform that team’s chances this year.
Biggest impact for Pennington:
-Baltimore. I think he’d make them a contender in the AFC and give them time to coach-up Flacco.
-Chicago. Ditto.
-Minnesota. I think they’d benefit more with a good down-the-field thrower, but CP would still offer some careful passing to a ball-control offense.
-Miami. He could seriously make them a 7-9 to 9-7 team.
-Kansas City. Did he get along with Herm when they were together? The Chiefs would be nuts not to try to get Pennington if he were available.
-Washington. Chris Cooley would catch 100 passes. Pennington may be a better fit in Zorn’s offense than Campbell is.
:: Geronimo — 8/7/2008 @ 9:38 am
lmao @ 35
That Paxton Mandingo sounds like a real mean sucker of a QB. I wouldn’t look forward to playing him if I were in the Raiders’ shoes.
:: noah of arkadia or somewhere — 8/7/2008 @ 9:43 am
Why? Why would the Jets do this? It’s not like they’re winning it all with this team. They’re in NYC! What, they need to bring attention to their team and sell tickets?
It’s reasonably safe to assume Favre plays 50% of the snaps, and the Packers therefore get a 3rd round pick. So the Pack save their $20 million bribe, get a reasonably high draft pick, and send Favre to the AFC. Packers management has to be dancing in the street right now.
:: MilkmanDanimal — 8/7/2008 @ 9:49 am
I haven’t seen what the Jets gave up for favre, but I just don’t get it. Assuming the Vikings were willing to give up mutiple valuable picks (aka the best offer from any other nfl team), why would the packer refuse that? They’re afraid of a 39 y/o QB ruining their 2008 season, instead of possibily setting themselves up for a little dynastic run in the next 5 years? Either they hate the vikes that much, I’m missing something, or the packers are really that stupid.
:: Max — 8/7/2008 @ 9:51 am
#59
-Baltimore - Kyle Boller is a sufficient starter at QB until they figure out whether Flacco/Brown is the future. Kyle Boller has never really had a fair shake in Baltimore due to some really horrific offensive coaching (i.e. Billick), so he may prove to be at least an adequate QB this season.
-Chicago - see Minnesota.
-Minnesota - I agree, they need a QB with an arm. Defenses will already stack the box to counter Minnie’s running game, they need a QB who can pull the strong safety out of the tackle box. Pennington can’t do that anymore.
-Miami - They have a log-jam at QB and are trying to build a young team. I can’t see that Parcells would make room for a 32 yr old QB with an anemic arm. But then again, Parcells is the guy who brought you Bledsoe 3: The Final Chapter, and Testeverde 8: Never Say Never Again.
-Kansas City - Actually…this might be a nice fit. Receiving tight end par excellence, developing receivers, unstable QB situation.
-Washington - Nyet. Zorn was brought in to develop young QBs, not coach up retreads.

Re 58:
As a NYbased Skins fan, all I can say is , “NOOOOOOOOOOO!”
On a serious note, I don’t think the Skins invested their first 3 picks on 2 WR’s and a pass catching TE so that a candy arm Qb could toss dumpoffs.
:: Paul — 8/7/2008 @ 10:00 am
All reports stated the Vikes didn’t want to give up anything. In fact, other than the Jets NOBODY wanted to give up anything of consequence. From the beginning the Jets were the most willing to part with a draft pick.
And think about that. Just a draft pick. For a guy everyone is adamant can still play at a high level, blah, blah, blah.
Could be that folks figured they would wait until the Packers released him. But then they would be competing with every other team.
The more likely issue is that like Ted Thompson most teams just don’t believe Favre is going to hang in there for the long haul. That come some part of training camp or if the season doesn’t start out well Favre just says, “Ah, scr*w it. I’m going back to Mississippi.”
And getting back to the Vikes they had to be thinking if Favre was just released they had the inside track on him signing with MN. Favre wanted to play with the Vikes. Period. End of story.
And folks are right to believe that it could still happen.
Brett, good luck. Really. And thanks for everything.
But I will believe you are a Jet when I see you on Opening Day playing in the “wrong” green uniform.
:: BadgerT1000 — 8/7/2008 @ 10:00 am
#63: The question is what were the Vikings TRULY willing to give up. It’s tough to believe they’d be dumb enough to give up the farm on a guy who will at most be around for a couple years. And unless they were willing to make a Herschel Walker type of offer, Green Bay definitely didn’t want to have Favre visit Lambeau wearing another team’s jersey.
Best of luck in New York, Brett. I fear you will discover the fans there aren’t nearly as adoring or patient as those you’re accustomed to.
:: Sundown — 8/7/2008 @ 10:01 am
59. 2 days ago there was doubt if Chad Pennington would start over inexperienced Kellen Clemens, but now he is turning 6 different teams into playoff contenders?
I think Pennington is an awsome backup QB to have, but given his injuries and weak arm, he is far from a strong settled starter.
Given Pennington is the highest paid backup in the league, he will either take a pay cut (unlikely) or be cut. Favre can play a year or two and then pass the torch on to Clemens. There is no need for Penny.
Does Herm pick him up as a Favor? Parcells? Or do the Vikings finally want to let the Tavaras Jackson experiment end?
:: Chris — 8/7/2008 @ 10:03 am
re: 60
Exactly!
The Jets, like most NY teams, constantly suffer from an exaggerated sense of how good they are.
re: 61
The Packers want to win the NFC North. Adding Favre to the Vikings would have made that much harder. But I get your point. The Pats were quite content to let Bledsoe go to the Bills.
re: 18
That’s what I get for posting after midnight. I blame Mike Francesa.
I heard some New York writer last night say the Jets will go 11-5. I see 5 games on their schedule they have almost no hope of winning: two games against the Pats, and road games at San Diego, Seattle, and Tennessee. 8-8 is more realistic, and 6-10 far more likely.
:: RickD — 8/7/2008 @ 10:05 am
If Favre is realy THAT good, well, then why didn’t the Packers greet him with open arms and keep Rodgers on the bench for another year? Isn’t it telling that they believed Rodgers gave them a better chance of winning? What does this say about the Jets?

Max, there was no indication whatsoever that the Vikings were ready to part with multiple high draft picks, as far as I have heard. If you heard something different, I’d love to know. (I, for one, would have taken a 2 and a 3 for Favre from Minny in a heartbeat.) My guess is Minnesota was biding their time, anticipating Favre would veto the trade option and eventually be released.

The Packers wanted a d-lineman as compensation. Nobody was willing. So they settled for the best offer.
According to the GB writers Minny’s offer consisted of, “ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha”. With the belief that they had first dibs when Favre got his release.

Rumor:
Jets already shopping Chad Pennington to the Vikings.
So if the Jets trade a conditional 4th rounder to the Pack for Favre…
Then trade away Pennington to the Vikings for a 5th rounder.
They really have a good situation.
- They just traded away the highest paid backup in the league.
- If Favre works out then they pay for it, but if he doesn’t then all they did was rented Favre in exchange for Pennington, MAYBE moving down a round in the draft.
Sounds like a swift deal for the Jets if they can get a 5th or 6th rounder for Penny.

There’s a headline on CNNSI’s NFL page right now–”Pennington or Clemens? Mangini Still Undecided.”
Yeeeeeaaaah, I think you could probably pull that story down now.
:: MilkmanDanimal — 8/7/2008 @ 10:41 am
#60…why not San Francisco? He would seem to have the accuracy required for the Martz offense.

I think people will be surprised at how much improved the Jets will be this year. People always underestimate the extent teams improve/decline from year to year. The left guard situation was a total mess last year and the right tackle situation wasn’t much better. Even competent NFL-level play at those positions plus improvement from a bulked up D’Brick would’ve resulted in a pretty good offensive performance with Pennington. (Clemens, though, is really not very good.) There’s some talent and depth at the skill positions. The front 7 is also much bigger/stronger and will be better against the run. The secondary is pretty good with excellent players in Rhodes, Revis and competent players in Justin Miller and Eric Smith. They are also pretty deep at CB in terms of subs. Not that the Jets would’ve been world beaters, but they could reasonably expect to be WC contenders with some good luck.
I have no confidence Favre will end up actually playing this year, much less at the level he played last year. So I’m negative about this deal. But there is a small chance that Favre will be rejuvenated and dedicated. If that happens (a big if), the Jets can be contenders with a little luck. Other than the Pats, everybody in the AFC needs a little luck.

Re 31
Yes, Brett loves it when his team attempts to find and develop his replacement.
Granted, I’m sure it doesn’t feel good to be told you’re on the way out, but I just had to comment on that.
:: DrewTS — 8/7/2008 @ 11:08 am
A couple of things:
Bledsoe to the Bills: That Pats were quite content because Belichick knew that Bledsoe had a critical flaw that could be exploited. He then exploited it. I’m not sure Favre has such a flaw that McCarthy could exploit if Favre goes to Minny.
In general: As a Pats fan, I’m torn between my eagerness to see quality play in intra-division games, plus an excitement for the INT increase that the Pats DB’s just probably got for the season, against my strong dislike of the Jets and the desire to maximize the Pats chances this season.
For the record, even though this makes the Jets better, I still think the Bills, not the Jets, will be the #2 team in the AFCE this season…

EVERY team needs a little luck, especially regarding injuries. If Brady goes down, or (to a lesser degree) Moss or Welker, or a string of players at the same position–the Pats become a lot more mortal. And even without injuries, luck can do strange things. Remember that whole Superbowl thing? Granted, the Giants played an amazing game, and the Pats played flat, but all that did was allow luck to influence the game. And then it did.

I assume the appearance on 1050 ESPN radio was canceled? I was listening from 11:15 on, but it was just Max Kellerman.

I think more highly of Pennington than some of you guys — at least in the right situation.
He can’t carry a team. But he can dink and dunk his way to a 68% completion percentage, noodle arm or no. He can minimize his mistakes. He can make a team with a good defense hard to beat, simply by replacing an erratic and error-prone QB with a guy who can take care of the ball and manage some 1st downs on a consistent basis.
In other words, if I wanted to win right now, I would take Pennington over
-Kyle Boller
-Jason Campbell
-Chicago QB
-John Beck
-Croyle/Huard
-Tavaris Jackson
Even in Miami, a QB like him could make them 8-8. Any NFL team that plays sound, no-frills defense (and I think the Parcells influence could be a factor in this kind of improvement), and commits few turnovers on offense, and can dink and dunk it pretty well, can beat enough bad teams to get to .500 in a hurry.
But that’s not my main point. I think he can make, in particular, the Vikings, Bears, and Ravens contenders this year in a way that I don’t think they will be with their current QB options.

Yes the Jets run D was terrible last year, but shouldn’t the additions of Kris Jenkins, Vernon Gholston, and a year older David Harris and Darrelle Revis help to fix that problem this season? I see the Jets D as being severly improved for 08
:: L.J. — 8/7/2008 @ 12:33 pm
I’m with you Geronimo. I think it is likely that the Jets will be worse with Favre than they would’ve been with Pennington because Favre is not in shape, unfamilar with the offense, disinterested in really preparing hard off the field, unimpressed by Mangini and Schottenheomer, pining for GB/Mississippi/Minnesota, etc. If Favre somehow decides to be Joe Filmstudy, buys what the coaches are selling and gets into top shape, then the upside is huge. But the probability of that upside being realized is pretty small, in my opinion. Favre at 39 can’t roll out of bed and be a great QB, and I’m not sure he appreciates that.
:: Led — 8/7/2008 @ 1:14 pm
Favre isn’t going to have that good, young defense anymore. The GB defense was good, so he would get the ball back after some boneheaded pick.. that wont be the case in NJ with a weaker defense. & the fans aren’t going to be so forgiving.
:: jets fan! — 8/7/2008 @ 1:39 pm
I haven’t heard much talk yet of how hard it will be for Favre to learn the Jets’ system, but you have to wonder. And even if he has the plays down pat, there’s still timing issues with his receivers. I don’t have any doubts he can still play, but this isn’t exactly what I’d call a can’t miss situation. And he’ll be trying awfully hard to prove he’s still got it. If he tries to hard, he may end up pressing. And when he does that, INTs tend to be the result.
:: sundown — 8/7/2008 @ 2:27 pm
I feel like Pennington would have had the chance to be a very similar QB to Peyton had he been blessed with better physical tools.
I never really liked him much back in the day since the Edwards Jets were brutal to watch. As he’s had some injuries and bad luck, I’m hoping he gets another starting shot since he still has more to give before he’s at the level of the career #2 QBs.

So I had a bit too much Newcastle to drink last night…
Anyway, late last night I was a bit drunk and I was browsing over this comment thread… when I came across Raiderjoe’s ramblings while he was also drunk.
I’m telling you gentlemen, if you think Raiderjoe is great usually, when you’re drunk and reading his ramblings while is drunk, that experience just goes to a whole new level.
:: PaulH — 8/7/2008 @ 4:57 pm
re 53, Jets have no chance against Seattle when the game is in Seattle.
:: sam — 8/7/2008 @ 6:43 pm
#64 “Parcells is the guy who brought you Bledsoe 3: The Final Chapter, and Testeverde 8: Never Say Never Again”.
Solid gold. And knock his punctuation all you want but Raiderjoe has picked the exact same NFC playoff teams as me. And for some reason I’m thinking that’s a good thing
:: Stevie — 8/7/2008 @ 8:43 pm
83. Does Kris Jenkins even play in the NFL anymore or does he spend his time on IR?
Gholston is a beast but the guy was known as an underachiever in college. He could terrorize a QB in one game, and be invisibile in other games.
Look, even if these guys help, you have to understand the Jets run D was complete garbage.
:: Chris — 8/8/2008 @ 8:35 am
Thank you people for this quality and funny thread!
Chad, I wish yóu the very best.
I don´t know, as a jets fan, if to root for them anymore.. but I probably will..
