Pennington To Be Cut Today

PFT is reporting that the NFL Network’s Adam Schefter (who haunts my dreams after playing Head Coach) is reporting that the Jets will cut Chad Pennington at 4:00 PM today.

I said that Pennington was a great fit for the Vikings, and have for a while now. His weaknesses (namely his arm strength) are mitigated by the West Coast offense, and his positives (footwork, consistency, playfakes) are excellent fits for the team.

However, at this point, the same concerns come into play that we’ve been mentioning with Favre. Pennington would need to learn a new system on the fly, in the middle of training camp. Furthermore, players are more prone to injury in a new scheme since they’re having to do new things in new situations, thinking about what to do instead of actually doing it. For a player who’s already a huge injury risk, and who will be going behind what many Vikings fans insist is a middling line when it comes to pass blocking, it might be a bad idea at this point of the season to insert Pennington in.

On the other hand…Tarvaris Jackson.

  2. PFT is also reporting that the Dolphins have contacted Pennington’s agent. Considering how horrible Beck and McCown have been in camp, I’m not surpised. Henne has looked better than either, and he’s just a 2nd round rookie. Plus, Penny is a Parcells guy.

    That said, the Dolphins are not gonna be very good this year, so I’m not sure how much sense it makes to sign Penny to a rebuilding team.

  3. The Dolphins aren’t a bad fit for Chad, mainly because they should have a pretty good running game. Long at LT, Carey at RT, Satele and Smiley inside with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams in the backfield. They should be able to run and Pennington could get his playaction game going.

    I may as well ask this here as well; for me the Vikings season will rest on whether or not they have a starting left tackle for most of it. Can anyone tell me what the latest news is on McKinnie? The last I heard his trial was due to start in week 3, which is the kind of thing that could interfere with a player’s preparation. (I ask because it’s quite hard to get up to date information on that kind of thing from the far side of the Atlantic.)

  4. No doubt, the Dolphins running game will be awesome. Our run blocking o-line is really good and Ricky looks like the 1,800 yard version in camp. If Ronnie Brown is anywhere near the Ronnie Brown i watched last year, he could finally get respect. I recently saw a list on ESPN I think of the 10 best recieving RBs, and they didnt even mention Ronnie Brown. Most people forget that Ronnie led the league in yards from scrimmage for a full week after his torn ACL, he was amazing. With ZERO passing game.

    :: tylerdolphin — 8/7/2008 @ 1:05 pm

  5. Pennington in Miami? Has anyone noticed how bad the O-line has been in camp? One of the reasons all 3 quarterbacks have sucked (and they all have) is that they’ve had pressure in their face right from the snap. No one has yet managed to escape from 11-on-11 drills with the first or second team without throwing at least 1 interception… unless > 50% of the plays were running plays.

    :: fyo — 8/7/2008 @ 1:31 pm

  6. Chad Pennington, while not the best QB in the league, is my favorite player. The Vikings and the Dolphins are my #1 and #2 most hated teams. I’m about ready to light myself on fire. I guess that’s what I get for wishing Favre upon the Vikings.

    :: Chad — 8/7/2008 @ 1:44 pm

  7. I see the Vikings signing of Pennington as more low-risk than the Jets signing Favre, simply because they don’t need to guarantee him the starter’s job. If Tavaris Jackson is good enough to keep him out of the starting role, than the Vikings are in good shape.

    So… would this make Miami consider reacquiring Gus Frerotte?

    :: Andy — 8/7/2008 @ 1:49 pm

  8. So, what team would be in the market for a wily veteran who doesn’t throw deep but is good on short timing routes?

    Oh, god, somebody quick taser Jon Gruden before he can get to a phone.

    :: MilkmanDanimal — 8/7/2008 @ 2:25 pm

  9. #8 wins the thread.

    :: Justin Zeth — 8/7/2008 @ 3:16 pm

  10. 8.
    Good point. Taser the guy. Please.

    :: Theo, Netherlands — 8/7/2008 @ 3:41 pm

  11. Don’t taser me bro!

    :: Jon Gruden — 8/7/2008 @ 3:44 pm

  12. If you tasered Jon Gruden, would he relax?

    :: daddymag — 8/7/2008 @ 3:50 pm

  13. *sits in the corner tasered*

    Must…..

    sign…..

    quart…..er…..

    :: Jon Gruden — 8/7/2008 @ 4:32 pm

  14. I’m with #6, I love Chad Pennington, I think he’s one of the most disrespected QBs in the league… when he was healthy, he really did play at an elite level - on the JETS.

    I really hope he can land somewhere good… hell, I’d jump for joy if my Texans picked him up.

    :: Aaron — 8/7/2008 @ 4:43 pm

  15. Penningtn not a good Qb. Okay Qb but not good or greta.
    Cant thorw ball far and how do you think Berrian going to succed with Pennington throwing to him. Vikes cant win on running only. have to throw the ball deep to loossen up defenses. Jakcson did that last year even though he had mnay bad games. but give him another shot at it he could be alright. would deifintely be better than Chad Pennington. Pennington not even much better than Gus Ferrot. Ferret has much better arm than Pennington and overall is not as good as Favre, but for Vikings offense Ferret is a better fit than Pennington.

    :: Raiderjoe — 8/7/2008 @ 5:23 pm

  16. I’m just depressed that Bob Weasel couldn’t make the roster. He was much better than Gus Ferret.

    :: MilkmanDanimal — 8/7/2008 @ 5:48 pm

  17. sorry meant to write

    Feret has much better arm than Pennington but overall he is not better than Pennignton. Wrote Farve there by mistake. Meant Pennington but wrote Farve.

    :: Raiderjoe — 8/7/2008 @ 6:09 pm

  18. I think I have to concur with Raiderjoe - does putting Pennington on the field really force opponents to play their safeties further back? I like Berrian a lot, but he’s never struck me as being suited to a short passing offense, and while I think Sidney Rice has a lot of promise, you have to look at their other receivers. Bobby Wade? Robert Ferguson? Neither of their tight ends is a receiving threat, and nobody knows what’ll happen with McKinnie.

    Basically, as easy (and correct) as it is to point at Tavaris Jackson, the Vikings’ have multiple issues with their passing game that extend way beyond the quarterback position. Even with the running backs, run blocking, and addition of Berrian I’m not sure at all that they’ve got a better offense than the Jets.

    :: Crabbie — 8/8/2008 @ 3:25 am

  19. Not hearing a lot of noise on the vikings front since the release… most of it seems to be from outside sources that think he’d be a great fit. Now, it could just be them not commenting, but even the TC press seems to be all like, “finally we can move on”, as in all the speculation of someone coming in to replace Tarvaris is over…

    :: andrew — 8/8/2008 @ 6:53 am

  20. I think Pennington’s ability to playfake could be of tremendous benefit to the vikings.

    I charted Vikings games last year, and you cannot understate how poor a play-faker he is. Its hard to even pick up when he’s doing it while I’m pausing and rewinding and viewing it again and again. A running back will run by him, and he’ll kind of shift his arm marginally in his direction before proceeding to his dropback spot to get on with the pass. He doesn’t sell it, at all. He doesn’t fool anyone.

    Having to respect the possibility of the pass on a running play because of the playfakes would help Peterson and Taylor significantly I feel…

    :: andrew — 8/8/2008 @ 6:56 am

  21. Isn’t Pennington the all time leader in completion percentage? It’s not like the Dolphins are gonna get anyone else to push the safeties back. He knows every team in the division. He is definitely a + player when healthy. The only downside to Miami signing him is the Cap # + the injury risk.

    I think that regardless of what most fans and the rest of the league thinks, the Vikes really want to give Tavaris a chance this year, and don’t want to bring someone in that makes it look like they don’t have confidence in him.

    :: Ben — 8/8/2008 @ 7:12 am

  22. Let’s just set this straight: Throwing the ball deep is not *completely* contigent on arm strength. Pennington actually throws a beautiful deep ball… just doesn’t have the arm strength to zip in those outs.

    :: Temo — 8/8/2008 @ 8:56 am

  23. Tavaras is a horrible play fake guy, Penny is the best. TJ just doesn’t pay attention to detail, and the Vikings need to end that experiment.

    I would rather watch any other QB in the league than TJ. I’d rather watch a handful of college QB’s over that flaming bum.

    :: Chris — 8/8/2008 @ 9:02 am

  24. in the second paragraph on #20 I was referring to T-Jack.

    :: andrew — 8/8/2008 @ 9:21 am

  25. Actually reports from Vikes camp says that 2nd year man aundre allison is impressing. The kid was a 5th rounder who could have been a 2nd rounder and nobody would have said anything. More of a return man but he has enough size to be effective as a bubble screen/ short game kind of guy.

    Peningthong would fit in great with the Vikings, who have a tendency to acquire under-achievers. Case in point.

    :: tim — 8/8/2008 @ 10:10 am

  26. I was actually pretty impressed with Sidney Rice last year.

    He is very young, showed good skills, and performed better than you would expect a rookie to.

    :: Chris — 8/8/2008 @ 10:33 am

  27. yes, statistically, Pennington is the most accurate quarterback in THE HISTORY OF THE LEAGUE among all passers with a minimum of 1500 passes. And his completion percentage for passes over 40 yards ain’t so bad either, and he can run a 2 minute drill like freakin’ Joe Montana.
    Unfortunately, it looks like he is going to spend his career playing for teams without any elite receivers, and with weak offensive lines.
    And it’s slowly killing him.
