2011 Football Outsiders Awards

Welcome to the ninth annual Football Outsiders Awards. Readers get to have their say in categories both conventional -- like MVP or Rookie of the Year -- and unconventional. We've got the Keep Choppin' Wood award for the worst player of the year, awards for most overrated and underrated players, and of course the "This is Our Country" Award for most annoying commercial.

Three important notes:

1) Please refrain from writing things like "I don't know" or joke answers like retired players. If you don't want to answer a question, leave it blank.

2) If you enter two names in any of the open questions EXCEPT for best offensive lineman (which has two spaces, of course) then we will not count your answer. We also do not count answers for "any player on Team X" or some such thing.

3) Only ballots with at least half of the questions answered will be counted in this year's awards.

As of last season, we have changed our definitions of "overrated" and "underrated," using the Pro Bowl as a marker of when conventional wisdom considers a player among the best at his position. You'll find the rosters here; please avoid players who were replacements (marked "Y"). We will not count votes in this category or the next one unless that player was an original, pre-injury Pro Bowl selection

Please note that votes in both this category and the next two categories can include players who are going to the Pro Bowl as either injury or Super Bowl roster replacements (including London Fletcher, Cam Newton, Julius Peppers, etc.).

I don't think Tim Tebow should be on the "John Elway Award" list - his rookie year was hardly disappointing. I don't think anyone expected him to start from the beginning of last year, and when he did play the last three games he played pretty dang well.

I'd also like to see John Fox as a coach of the year candidate, just because he was willing to take a very unconventional approach to help his team succeed. Most NFL coaches wouldn't have done that, and successful deviation from coaching dogma should absolutely be encouraged.

Why no "most annoying commentators" this year?

And, finally, the Nissan Leaf commercial is in the wrong category.

11
by Jimmy :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:13pm

Have they had a most annoying commentators award before? Sounds like a faster way to get folk to fall out than asking which QB has had a more valuable career out of Manning or Brady (you know, all things considered but in no way defined in the question - just to leave every possible avenue of argument available).

On the plus side it does seem like an award I could win.

12
by JIPanick :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:15pm

Not for the site, for the games. You know, Simms v Collinsworth v Aikman.

18
by tuluse :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:22pm

They used to have best and worst, and they had a section for best local columnist/blogger.

I'm kind of sad, wanted to vote for Billick as the best.

47
by Intropy :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 2:48am

Norm Hitzges, and I don't even live in Dallas.

55
by tuluse :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 10:33am

I meant Billick for best announcer. I don't really have an opinion for best local columnist. All I read is the Chicago Tribune, and everyone but Biggs sucks.

14
by Mr Shush :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:16pm

Commentators, dude, commentators. Announcers, if you prefer. Not commenters. Stop working on that acceptance post.

16
by Jimmy :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:18pm

Ah, my bad that does make more sense and would be considerably less inflamatory. Might be less fun though.

24
by Shattenjager :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 4:12pm

You would have no chance as long as I'm here!

Actually, a best commenter award would be great. It would probably need a limit of one such award for life so Raiderjoe didn't just win it every year, but otherwise it would be a good way to give some credit to the good commenters.

27
by JIPanick :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 5:36pm

Best commenter would be a fantastic award.

63
by Independent George :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 2:52pm

Commenter would be difficult; personally, I don't always notice who wrote what. Individual comments, however, tend to stick out.

I nominate the "DVOA has become self-aware, and hates the Cowboys" as my favorite of the season. As I said, I can't remember who wrote that one, but it was effin' brilliant.

34
by TomC :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 7:19pm

Almost by definition, the most annoying commenter on this site is not going to have enough self-awareness to suggest, even in jest, that he might be the most annoying commenter on this site.

13
by tuluse :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:16pm

Really the Nissan commercial bothered you that much?

I thought it was cool just for all the steampunk-esque machinery.

20
by JIPanick :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:29pm

It was a good-looking ad, don't get me wrong, but it strikes me as a little dishonest intellectually.

There's a big difference between moving the fossil fuel consumption from the car to the power plant and eliminating it entirely; the car does the former while the ad claims the latter.

Plenty of people already don't understand the distinction, and the ad helps perpetuate that mindset. Worse, the people in question vote.

And that is where I am going to stop.

33
by TomC :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 7:15pm

I agree with you 100%, and that's where I'm going to stop. (I actually got a rule 1 warning for complaining about that commercial on the IRC thread.)

41
by RickD :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 1:42am

You're excluding the possibility that electricity could be generated by sources other than fossil fuels?

Nuclear? Solar? Wind power?

Or that emissions from a power plant could be less than those from vehicles using internal combustion engines?

I have no opinion about the Leaf ad. One benefit from watching Red Zone is the lack of ads.

51
by Mr Shush :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 9:54am

Or that using a different fossil fuel (natural gas) might be both cheaper and easier to source domestically, quite apart from any emissions considerations?

61
by RickD :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 2:41pm

There is that, too. Gasoline fumes are really quite dirty compared to what is produced by natural gas combustion.

3
by tuluse :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 2:14pm

I'm struck by just how amazing the playoffs were this year.

76
by Stats are for losers (not verified) :: Wed, 02/01/2012 - 12:02pm

Personally, it was a tough call between SF/NO and NE/BAL for game of the year--they made me forget whichever regular season game it was I'd previously thought was good.

78
by dmstorm22 :: Wed, 02/01/2012 - 1:17pm

Personally, I thought that there were some strong regular season candidates, like the Packers win over the Giants, and the Ravens win in Pittsburgh.

I went with the SF-NO playoff game. I probably would have went with the AFC Title Game had the Ravens finished that drive with a TD, or Cundiff hitting the kick and that game going to OT. The way it ended kind of hurt my view of the game as a whole.

80
by Independent George :: Wed, 02/01/2012 - 3:44pm

I voted for the 2nd Ravens-Steelers game. No, it didn't matter as much as a playoff game, but it was still a great game within a great rivalry. And there was actually professional-level defense!

4
by Rabbit :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 2:22pm

I happen to like the Discount Double-check commercial. The fat guy in the window never fails to crack me up.

8
by are-tee :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:06pm

I would have voted for the commercial (I think it's for AT&T) where the totally P-whipped guy has to lie to the woman about checking the game on his phone.

9
by tuluse :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:10pm

That one is great.

What am I, some kind of summoner who can just summon video of the game to his phone?

48
by jebmak :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 8:52am

Hah! I found that amusing (though my wife did not care for it).

I still would have chosen 'For Michael' though, for all around badassery.

74
by Shattenjager :: Wed, 02/01/2012 - 1:18am

"For Michael" is probably my favorite ad ever.

87
by jebmak :: Sat, 02/04/2012 - 2:37am

It is way up there. But, for me, I don't think that anything will ever top:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fA8ad71n94

Still. Freaking. Love it.

65
by TreeRol (not verified) :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 3:27pm

Liking that ad isn't necessarily tied to gender; my girlfriend and I both love it. The look on the guy's face at the end cracks me the hell up.

5
by Anonymous007 (not verified) :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 2:43pm

Can't believe Mike Martz is on the worst coach list!!

(Also real hope the State Farm "That thing does not like Dwayne" ad wins!)

6
by dmstorm22 :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 2:50pm

Why is Indy not even listed as a possible surprise Super Bowl contender? Is it that FO thinks that if Manning comes back, it won't really be a surprise they would be contending, or is it that they think that is just a situation devoid of all hope for 2012?

17
by Mr Shush :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:19pm

I'm guessing it's an oversight, but if not I would say the rationale is that it now seems there is almost no possibility Manning is coming back (for the Colts - although I'm increasingly pessimistic about him playing again at all).

39
by Independent George :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 10:19pm

Wouldn't that make it an even bigger surprise?

52
by Mr Shush :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 9:59am

It would make it a surprise in the way that a single typing monkey recreating the First Folio text of Hamlet in a finite timeframe would be a surprise. If the non-listing's deliberate, I figure it's for the same reason that Caldwell wasn't listed as an option on the Coach of the Year ballot.

7
by DFields (not verified) :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 2:57pm

Was Suggs that overrated that he wasn't even included in the vote for Defensive MVP? I'm confused. But then again, I don't subscribe to the premium stats.

29
by BJR :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 5:52pm

Yes, that seems like a major oversight. Suggs was the best player on the best defence in football (according to FO) - an absolute sure-fire DMVP candidate.

32
by Anonymouse (not verified) :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 6:21pm

I think they replaced him with Haloti Ngata by mistake.

10
by Ben :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:13pm

Kubiak isn't even a choice for Coach of the year?

15
by Mr Shush :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:17pm

I agree. I think I'd vote for Jim Harbaugh anyway, but he ought to be on the list.

19
by dmstorm22 :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:28pm

What's more strange is that Mike Munchak is. Both teams had 4 win improvements. I guess a lot of the credit for the Texans does go to Wade for fixing that defense, but then again, Kubiak steadied a team rittled with injuries to major players (their four best players are most likely Schaub, Johnson, Mario and Foster - how many games did they all play together in?) and kept the offense viable with three different QBs.

53
by Mr Shush :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 10:06am

I think it would be fairer to say that the Texans' six best and most important players are Schaub, Johnson, Williams, Foster, Cushing and Joseph. Joseph going down would have hurt more than Williams, I think, but that's partly because the depth at OLB is much better than the depth at CB, as opposed to Joseph being better than Williams.

But yeah, they had three wins against playoff teams (including one in the playoffs) with a 5th round rookie under center. That's pretty impressive. They also came within a two point conversion of beating Tennessee in a game where they pulled just about every starter (including the aforementioned fifth round rookie) by half-time, while the Titans were playing to keep their playoff hopes alive. That was Delhomme handing off to Derrick Ward and passing to Garrett Graham while Derek Newton protected his blind side, for Heaven's sake. Bryan Braman was out there rushing the passer.

21
by JIPanick :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 3:31pm

I didn't even notice that, but he should be. Certainly more so than Tomlin!

I thought the Orakpo Scrabble commercial was solid.

42
by RickD :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 1:45am

I'm up for the pancake social!

I also think it's weird when ads I like are nominated for "most annoying" and ads I find annoying are nominated for "best"

56
by Hurt Bones :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 10:42am

I'll stand up for the scrabble ad as well. I also thinks it's a strong ad given that it has two elements I would normally find offensive, but don't in this case. First, a Redskin endorsing any product and second, it's part of the caveman commercials which I detest.

58
by Independent George :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 11:25am

I also think it's weird when ads I like are nominated for "most annoying" and ads I find annoying are nominated for "best"

As long as you didn't like the Fiat commercial, we're cool. I'll accept differences of opinion on any of the others, but may be the most astonishingly bad commercial I've ever seen. In my estimation, it also earned bonus points for:

1. Being part of a high budget, high-concept ad campaign.
2. Completely missing its target demographic. J-Lo? Fiat? Elaborate choreography set to Europop? That has 'NFL' written all over it.
3. Its ubiquity in the opening weeks of the season.

59
by Jimmy :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 1:56pm

I don't think the advert is aimed at you. It is clearly aimed at women and probably used a J-Lo because she (mysteriously) has appeal in many continents not the least South America and Europe where Fiat probably hopes to sell a lot of small cars. American male is probably next to Massai Mara warrior on the list of folks who Fiat think might buy one of their cars. That doesn't explain why they would purchase so much ad space during football games though.

66
by Independent George :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 3:45pm

That's kind of my point - they spent an awful, awful lot of money flooding NFL broadcasts with that commercial. I'm no advertising or marketing guru, but somehow, I don't think they got the demographic they were looking for.

62
by RickD :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 2:43pm

Wow. I totally don't remember the Fiat ad.

Sometimes the aging process works in my favor, apparently. I do vaguely remember that everybody hated the Fiat ad.

23
by MJK :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 4:07pm

I think the commercials should be a "write in". Several people seem to think that some of them are in the wrong category.

For that matter, I like the "second unmanly thing you've done" ads. They're funny.

And the Call of Duty ads deeply disturb me. I work with the horrors of war, and am not a fan of a product that does so much to glorify it and gloss over its atrocities so much, and targets this at our youth. Not meaning to get all preachy, but it does bother me...

26
by Marko :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 5:09pm

Agreed regarding some of the commercials being in the wrong category. Most of the ones in the "best" category were entirely unmemorable to me, and I thought several of the others were annoying. So the one I voted for (Volkswagen) was the only one that I both remembered and was not annoyed by.

As for the ones in the "annoying" category, that was almost too close to call, as there were several top contenders. The Fiat/JLo commercial was really bad, and so was the Napa Know-How campaign, but I chose the Miller Lite/second unmanly thing campaign. Those were truly annoying, in part because there so many of them, in part because they were so idiotic, and in part because the acting was so terrible.

As for the State Farm Discount Double Check campaign, I actually like it. Even as a Bears fan, I can admit that they were funny (even BJ Raji's reenactment of his TD dance from last year's NFC Championship game, although I probably wouldn't have found it very amusing had I seen that commercial a few weeks or a month after the game). The campaign is even more enjoyable now that the spots are still airing after the Packers were knocked out of the playoffs. But it is true that the clownish Cheesehead guy at the end is annoying.

28
by JIPanick :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 5:44pm

Or they could just have the list of the same nominees for both.

Or, for all categories, they could have a nominations phase a week prior where people are invited to write-in candidates, and the top ten written in of each show up at the actual balloting - writing staff can fill out any extra spots.

49
by jebmak :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 8:54am

I like, and second, this plan.

68
by Theo :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 6:39pm

I think that most buyers understand it for what it is: a fantasy.
(If your worries lie somewhere else, then excuse me)

90
by MC2 :: Sun, 02/05/2012 - 5:46am

I think that your point about "fantasy" wars would be a bit easier to agree with, if not for the fact that: a) America is currently engaged in multiple "reality" wars, and b) the ad runs alongside other ads encouraging young people to sign up to participate in these "reality" wars.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that the ad (let alone the game) should be banned or anything like that, but I have to agree that the ad is somewhat disturbing.

25
by Vince Verhei :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 4:32pm

For that matter, I like the "second unmanly thing you've done" ads. They're funny.

You're entitled to your opinion, but you are literally the first person I've heard from who feels that way.

35
by DEW (not verified) :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 7:20pm

My wife and I can be two and three, then. ^_^

The thing that amazed me about the Pro Bowl roster the most was that somehow Brandon Browner went as an injury replacement and Richard Sherman...you know, the guy who was better ON THE SAME TEAM, stayed home. @_@ Too bad I couldn't vote for Browner in the "shouldn't have been there" since he was an injury replacement.

...and I think a best and worst commentator award would be nice. You cannot believe how happy I am that NBC has the Super Bowl this year and we get Michaels/Collinsworth instead of Buck/Aikman or (Tebow forbid!) Nantz/Simms.

54
by Mr Shush :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 10:16am

Similarly, Antonio Smith was very good this year, but JJ Watt was better. In fairness, that may just be about the fact that Watt improved over the course of the year, so a lot of ballots were cast before his most dominant run of play.

43
by RickD :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 1:47am

It's been years since I've seen a beer ad for Miller Lite that I've liked. The "unmanly" campaign is the most blatant for pushing "traditional roles" buttons.

69
by InTheBoilerRoom :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 6:42pm

I actually bounce back and forth on the Miller Light ad campaign. The irony makes me dislike it more, yet I get a sense of delight at the expense of the men thinking they are more manly for drinking Miller Light over some other generic light beer. I don't claim that drinking light beer is inherently unmanly, but if they are going to argue that drinking "generic light beer" is unmanly compared to drinking Miller Light, well, the joke is on them.

71
by justanothersteve :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 9:29pm

I think that may be why I find these ads funny. I think Lite, like most old-time American beers, is gawd-awful and the unintended irony is wonderful. I'm also one of the few gays here, so I think the whole obsession of manliness theme resonates with me.

75
by TomC :: Wed, 02/01/2012 - 10:50am

I have to admit I'm offended by the nearly explicit statement: "If you don't drink our beer, you are a homosexual. Which is bad." And I would have guessed it would piss me off even more if I were gay, so your opinion is an interesting data point (with all the small-sample-size caveats of course).

77
by Stats are for losers (not verified) :: Wed, 02/01/2012 - 12:06pm

Seriously, though, who actually decides to buy a beer based on the commercial?

As a scientist, though, I like Miller Lite because they use a semi-synthetic hop extract that's unskunkable.

30
by BJR :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 6:03pm

Once again I have had to leave the 'best offensive lineman' and 'most deserving special teams player' categories blank. I suppose it gives fans the opportunity to highlight unsung players on their favourite team, but I just don't see how anybody short of an NFL coach who spends hours and hours watching film can answer those questions with any degree of confidence or accuracy.

31
by tuluse :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 6:05pm

I think these votes are just for fun.

36
by JIPanick :: Mon, 01/30/2012 - 7:51pm

I take the FO awards considerably more seriously than the AP awards. The voters are smarter.

57
by Independent George :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 11:09am

I didn't select a special teams player for exactly that reason, but I saw enough of the big-name OL this season that I felt comfortable selecting a favorite (Jahri Evans), and a runner-up (Jason Peters) mostly by process of elimination (he might not actually be the best of the lot, but he seemed a lot more consistent than anybody else I paid attention to).

Jahri Evans made Ndamukong Suh look ridiculous in the playoff game, held his own when matched up against Jason Smith (my pick for DPOY), and dominated against weaker defenders. I don't claim to be an expert on offensive line play, and most certainly haven't watched the entire league, but that was enough for me to feel comfortable with my selection.

60
by Mr Shush :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 2:37pm

I think you meant Justin Smith, though I suppose it's possible that Jason's contribution to points not being scored was in fact greater than his namesake's.

Not trying to be a homer, but is there a reason why Jason Pierre-Paul isn't a nominee for the Elway award? 1st Team All-Pro seems like a pretty big breakout after 4.5 sacks & 17 tackles in his rookie year.

44
by RickD :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 1:49am

Good point. I would certainly have voted for him if he were on the ballot. And I'm definitely not a homer.

45
by justanothersteve :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 1:56am

I agree. I didn't think of him when I voted, but none of the other names jumped out at me. In fact, I can't even remember who I voted for in this category.

46
by Shattenjager :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 2:18am

My guess would be that they didn't consider his rookie season disappointing.

67
by dk240t :: Tue, 01/31/2012 - 5:01pm

There should be a write in category for most egregious person/thing left off the radio button choice lists, and worst selection put on the radio button choice list.

I'm going to nominate Mike Munchak as worst selection included.

The guys' team improved from 7.7% DVOA to 7.2% DVOA thanks to his excellent coaching - oh wait, they didn't improve, they actually went down in DVOA. And they weren't able to win a division that was starting a rookie 5th round, 3rd string QB for 1/4 of the year. And he couldn't get the most highly paid running back in the NFL to perform at the level of even an average running back in the NFL. Yeah, that's a real coach of the year candidate.

Not trying to be a jackass or anything, but it does seem like there are several pretty glaring omissions from the nominees lists this year, and I don't remember ever thinking there was any such problem in any previous years. Odd.

I have no objections to any of the various nominees for commercials, though, except maybe that every goddamn commercial McDonald's puts out should be on the latter list. And $DEITY, those Orakpo commercials are annoying as hell.

by Dan :: Sun, 02/05/2012 - 1:08am

This would've gotten my vote. I usually mute the tv during commercials, and when I forget to mute it at the start of a commercial break I remember when this commercial comes on.

81
by BCSJ (not verified) :: Wed, 02/01/2012 - 4:29pm

I enjoyed entering Troy Polamalu's name twice, as 'most undeserving Pro Bowler' and as 'most likely to decline'. Every time I watch Pittsburgh play, he's over-pursuing, missing tackles, etc. The guy is 90% hair, 10% talent.

82
by BJR :: Wed, 02/01/2012 - 6:30pm

In the battle of 'which Pittsburgh defender is most likely to decline' I nearly selected James Harrison, just because he's got a very high level to sustain and is getting old. But I eventually settled for Polamalu as the safer choice.

83
by Intropy :: Thu, 02/02/2012 - 2:15am

Yes, you do see that. He tends to over-pursue and miss more tackles than any other safety in the league because he's running up from a position where any other safety in the league is a non-factor who doesn't even make it into the camera's frame. That he makes a reasonable proportion of those tackles is incredible, but even missing them is very valuable since it allows pursuit from other defenders to close.

84
by Independent George :: Thu, 02/02/2012 - 3:28pm

I think you're giving him a little too much credit. To my eyes, the problem is that a combination of age & injuries has forced him to become a lot more aggressive and take a lot more risks to make those same spectacular plays he did when he was 25. Where he once lined up deep, charged the line of scrimmege, and then reversed direction and held the deep coverage again if the play went that way, now he's committed charging into the backfield regardless of what else is going on. He also appears to be tipping off QBs as to his intentions a lot more - possibly due to the things I just mentioned.

The end result is that he's still making those spectacular plays in the offensive backfield, but now he's also giving up a lot more spectacular plays in the defensive backfield. Instead of dialing himself back, and becoming a good (but no longer great) safety, he's trying to make the highlight reel play and becoming a liability against the better offenses.

This was an incredible play by Foster, but I have to wonder if a few years ago Polamalu wouldn't have got all the way there and brought him down.

Ryan Clark was the Steelers' best defensive back in 2011. I'm as surprised as you are.

I don't why I didn't think of this earlier, but where the heck is Sean Lee on the John Elway award list?
