Week 4 DVOA Ratings

It's the season debut of those famous Football Outsiders DVOA ratings, with the Cincinnati Bengals on top. No, that is not a misprint. If you want the infamous commentary for the math-o-phobic, it now resides at FOXSports.com.

TMQ: Avoid Postmodern Food

TMQ is down on Brett Favre. He also proposes a radical change to the salary cap, discovers paper food, and asks why on earth any broadcaster would refer to Cadillac Williams as "overrated." He's really got a point on that one.

And please, please, please, don't make this the "rip on TMQ" thread. If you don't like the column, don't you have anything better to do with your life than post here every week about how you don't like the column?

Attack of the Fantasy Football Clones

There's nothing wrong with rooting for your fantasy players along with your favorite team. But Peter Schrager is a little annoyed by people who root only for their fantasy team, especially because there are lots of people playing fantasy football now who don't really know anything about football otherwise. Are they ruining your trip to the sports bar too? And who is this Brian Leftwich guy?

2005 Quick Reads: Week 3

Here you go, folks, the official debut of Football Outsiders on FOX. (Mike Tanier has been writing for them for three weeks, of course, but that was "unofficial.") Congrats to Brian Walsh who donated a column name, and feel free to share your thoughts on the formatting.

Pennington, Fiedler Injured in Loss

The first 12 comments here came when Ryan posted earlier in the day that Chad Pennington and Jay Fiedler were out for an unspecified amount of time. According to the AP, that amount of time is now "all year" for Pennington and "six weeks" for Fiedler. Is Vinny Testaverde already waiting by his phone? Did the entire AFC East break a mirror and run over a black cat yesterday? And how good do people who bet the over on the Miami Dolphins feel right now?

Travis Henry to Be Suspended

According to the CBS pregame show today, the league will suspend Travis Henry of the Titans four games for testing positive for a banned substance (to be named later). I'm sure Will Carroll will have more about this in Black and Blue Report on Wednesday, but here's a place to talk about it before then.

Honey, I Shrunk the Lineman

Found this on Brian Bassett's Jets blog. EA Sports accidentally posted a roster update for Madden 2006 where they had made Jets practice squad OL Michael King only seven inches tall. If you haven't seen the pictures yet, it's oddly whimsical.

1999 DVOA Ratings and Commentary

I was dreaming when I wrote this, so sue me if it goes astray. But when I woke up this morning, I realized this piece was really late. The sky was full of footballs, Marshall Faulk was running everywhere. Since the Titans play the Rams this week, I know you might really care. Two thousand-zero-zero? Party's over, now it's 2005. But tonight we've got DVOA from 1999. (cue guitar solo)

Check Out This Batch of Coaching Candidates

Jay Glazer looks at the top coaching candidates as the rumor mill (Tice) gets spinning (Tice) extra early this year (Tice). Our man Jim Schwartz is here. (When you read "Schwartz has worked with statistical analysts to study down-and-distance decisions," or some such thing, that's a reference to FO.) So is Pittsburgh O-Line coach Russ Grimm, who was also mentioned as a possible head coaching candidate in the Steelers chapter of PFP 2005.
