DVOA? We don't need no stinkin' DVOA. For the first time, Football Outsiders brings you totally, completely subjective power rankings. Let the arguments begin!

Attention, Peter King. This is the Dallas offensive line speaking. Please put the crack pipe down.

I keep meaning to post about this and then it slips my mind because of all the work on the book, but Doug Drinen of pro-football-reference has started a blog doing a lot of fun little statistical analyses. He's one of my inspirations so folks should check it out, he seems to be posting roughly once a day. For example, here's one asking a question that I've wondered about ever since our original "Better to Have Rushed and Lost" article -- why do coaches treat third-and-2 as a passing situation when the run is so much more successful?

Pat Kirwan on the rise of the two-TE set, and the advantage it gives to the offense. The Cowboys' selection of Anthony Fasano and the Patriots' selection of David Thomas are both examples of how many teams now want to have not one but two or even three starting-quality tight ends. From PFP 2006, the teams that ran two-TE sets most often in 2005:
The lowest? Cincinnati and the New York Giants.

Well, this is a bit of a shock. The guy is old, but he was still playing well last year. The Jaguars are probably wishing he had said something before the draft. Perhaps they would have taken Chad Jackson instead of Marcedes Lewis. I think this decision makes it less likely that the Jaguars will overtake the Colts this year. Who are the starters there now? Ernest Wilford and Matt "I Was a Teenage Quarterback" Jones? Please tell me it won't be Reggie Williams.

No, this is not an Onion headline. Hardcore football fans everywhere will slobber when they read about the new features in this year's Madden, because they're concentrating on all those guys who don't get any stats. I'm not sure what the average video gamer is going to think of this, but before each play you can pick a specific blocker and then play as that blocker, with specific moves to cut block, attempt to counter a defensive spin move, or try to pancake the defender. As this article puts it, "Madden NFL 07 isn't really about Mr. MVP ... Madden 07 is really about Walter Jones.

Remember a couple of weeks ago when we all laughed at the Patriots signing Martin Grammatica? That was nothing compared to Atlanta signing Seth Marler. We are really scraping the bottom of the kicker barrel now. Do the Falcons understand just how bad Marler was? You are talking about a guy who has not kicked in the NFL in three years, and in his one season was worth an astonishing 27 points below the average NFL kicker. Did Todd Peterson kill Jim Mora's children or something?

Hidden in this article about Javon Walker wanting out of Green Bay is the news that Donald Driver has also told the Packers to restructure his deal or trade him. Last receiver out of Green Bay, please turn off the lights.

You just can't stop this guy from talking about the NFL Draft. This time, he spoke with the readers of SEAHAWKS.NET. By the way, I just want to thank Mike for taking the lead on the draft coverage this year. I don't watch college football, and this is the one area of the NFL I really don't study much. I really appreciate that Mike dealt with our content partners and that he and Mike Tanier wrote lots of draft-related material, freeing me up to work on Pro Football Prospectus 2006.

Suck or not suck? Following up on the angrier-looking Cardinal in Arizona, the Vikings now have an angrier-looking horn. It has a crease. Yep, that will sell more jerseys. The white stripe is a little weird, but in keeping with the new style I would like to suggest that the Vikings front seven now be nicknamed the "Seven Nation Army."
