FO Chat at Baseball Prospectus

I took questions over at BP.com for an hour and a half today, about the new book and the upcoming season. Topics included improvements to DVOA and KUBIAK, teams least likely to make the Super Bowl, the Keenan McCardell All-Stars, Edgerrin James, and whether or not I am with leather. By the way, I screwed up the tour dates at the end -- DC is August 16, Cleveland is August 17. Hopefully I'll get to do another one of these chats soon, there were definitely more questions than ever before.

The Greatest Game-Changers

Summer really is the time for debate-starting list articles, isn't it? Pat Kirwan tosses his hat into the ring with this list of the 12 people most responsible for changing the modern NFL. His top pick: Lawrence Taylor, for changing the way teams used and defended outside linebackers, followed by Bill Walsh and Marshall Faulk. Of course, Kirwan's not really clear about what he would consider "the modern game" -- since 1978? 1994? Some random year? By picking Gil Brandt, he suggests he's going back to the 1960's -- in which case, the top person on the list should be Pete Rozelle.

Bengals Take a Chance on Brooks

The Cincinnati Bengals took Virginia LB Ahmad Brooks in the supplemental draft today, losing their 2007 third-round pick. Apparently, the 49ers were ready to use their fourth-rounder on him, but the Bengals beat them to it. The good part of this is that the Bengals need young talent in the front seven. The bad part of this is that it adds one more player with personal problems to the Bengals roster. Mike Florio is going to have a field day with this one.

FO Ranks All 32 Teams on FOX: Quarterbacks

Yes, it's time for that fun debate, ranking all 32 teams at every position. What, you say, some other website just did this too, even on television? Ah, yes, but FOX has been doing this for years, and they won't let anyone stop them from doing it again in 2006. Even better, they're letting Football Outsiders do it for them. First, quarterbacks, where we solve the Manning-Brady debate with two simple words: Jim Sorgi.

FO Mailbag

Should interceptions be left out of our defensive ratings? Why was Tatum Bell's DVOA half of Mike Anderson's when he averaged a yard more per carry? Why is LaMont Jordan's receiving DVOA mediocre? Which teams had the most dropped passes according to the Football Outsiders game charting project? These questions and more are answered in the FO mailbag.

RB Tandem in K.C. a Chief Concern

Herm Edwards wants to run the ball 500 to 550 times this year. That sounds like a lot more than it actually is -- even though running backs rarely hit 400 carries, there were eight teams that topped 500 carries last year. But you get to that number because you can give 100 carries to guys like Ladell Betts, Maurice Morris, and Marion Barber. Edwards is absolutely right that he can't overuse Larry Johnson, and that creates a problem, because if Priest Holmes is not healthy, the backups in Kansas City are awful.

Best and Worst Supplemental Draft Picks Ever

Eric Moneypenny has a couple of fun little articles over at FOXSports.com about the supplemental draft. The link here goes to the top five, with Bernie Kosar at number one. Moneypenny makes a good point by including both Chargers DT Jamal Williams and Panthers OL Mike Wahle on his "Best" list. I know that a lot of people -- including this website, at times -- have made the mistake of referring to these players as undrafted, but they weren't undrafted. They were two very smart supplemental picks by the Chargers and Packers in 1998.

Visser First Female Winner of Rozelle Award

Sideline reporter Lesley Visser is this year's winner of the Pete Rozelle Award -- basically the broadcasters' wing of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. She was the first female beat writer ever (covering the 1976 Patriots) and the first female sideline reporter. Visser is good. Opening up sports reporting to knowledgeable females is good. Unfortunately, for every Suzy Kolber who is knowledgeable enough to host ESPN NFL Matchup with Jaws and Hoge, there's a few blonde bimbos stuck on the sidelines as "reporters." Those I could do without.

Oregon Ducks Unveil New Uniforms

The new Oregon uniforms have to be seen to be believed. Could it possibly get worse than the uniforms they unveiled for last year's Civil War game against Oregon State? Thanks to the magic of multiple color combinations, the answer is yes. Apparently, the most popular drinking game at Nike headquarters is "design the Oregon Ducks uniforms." They are no longer the Oregon Fighting Intellivision Men, however, as the coach requested a change in the font for player numbers.

10,000 NFL Seasons

Inspired by an old Bill James article, Doug Drinen ran a simulation of 10,000 seasons of football to see what would happen. Each year, the 32 teams were given different ratings that were supposed to designate their "true strength." (Somewhat like DVOA, but it's Doug's system, not mine.) Then Doug ran the season to see what would happen. How often does the best team win the Super Bowl? How often does a bad team make the playoffs?
