The Broncos beef up their running game. The Raiders bank on McFadden. The Chargers fill their remaining holes. The Chiefs, meanwhile, stockpile picks and earn wild praise. Ned Macey takes stock of the AFC West teams after the draft.

The Broncos tinker, the Chiefs rebuild, the Chargers stand pat, and the Raiders ... well, the Raiders take the alternate path to success. Don't they always?

Skies are dark and dismal in Oakland and Kansas City, but filled with sunshine in San Diego. Meanwhile, Denver will change defensive coordinators 37 times while you read this edition of Four Downs.

San Diego, with Norv Turner at the helm, went into Indianapolis and beat the defending champions. Impossible, right? It took the development of a well-executed downfield passing attack made possible by an injury to Dwight Freeney. Are they up to the challenge of taking down the Patriots? In a word, "Volek."

The way to beat the Giants is to stop the run, take away the deep pass, and make Eli Manning beat you with precise throws, right? The Bucs tried that but were thwarted by Manning, who was exceptionally accurate. Meanwhile, a fierce pass rush and a banged-up Joey Galloway combined to shut down the Tampa Bay offense.

The Vikings won five straight games by pounding the rock and stopping the run. What happens when the other team loads the box against Adrian Peterson and decides to throw the ball against their defensive backs in man coverage? Answer: A loss, and very likely a January tee time.

The Eagles finally win a close one over the no-longer-dominant Cowboys. An injured quarterback is forcing throws to his closely-covered primary receiver, so why consider the running game with one of the game's top backs? For the Eagles, Donovan McNabb is starting to regain his elusiveness, which could open up the offense.

The Buccaneers lost, but maybe a little perspective is in order. Luke McCown runs out of magic on third down. Andre Johnson makes the Texans a radically different team. Sage Rosenfels is a competent NFL quarterback. Plus, the story of two stud defensive ends who took very different paths to the NFL.
