The Broncos playoff hopes disappear in a sloppy loss in Oakland. The Broncos run game is struggling so badly, they could not run on the Raiders. Meanwhile, a banner day in the McCown household, the debut of JaMarcus Russell, and a bad pass defense despite two standout cornerbacks.

When the opposing defense scores more points off passes from your quarterback then you do, it makes it pretty easy to figure out what the problem is. Unfortunately for the Giants, the best way to fix their passing attack is sitting in an NBC studio. Plus: Minnesota, playoff contender? It has come to that.

Injuries in Indy are giving the Steelers a shot at that precious first-round bye, but their hopes for a second seed hit a snag against the lowly Jets. The offense has no margin for error and relies too much on Ben Roethlisberger to perform Herculean feats. Plus: gratuitous mentions of Michigan Wolverines in honor of Lloyd Carr's retirement.

It seems a developing storyline this year is about how bad quarterback play is in the league. I was skeptical of that assessment and decided to undertake a comprehensive study of the issue. Two weeks later, my study is not started, but Peter Schrager does some quick work by comparing passer ratings across the past 15 years. Anybody who grew up in Indianapolis during the Mike Pagel, Jack Trudeau, Jeff George years is not surprised by the results.

The one good thing about starting 0-8 is that a win is likely to warrant a write-up in this space. The excitement of New Orleans' four-game winning streak was extremely tempered by their continued lack of a competent pass defense. Plus, count the Rams offensive line injuries, and you can't spell "Saints defense DVOA" without D-A-V-I-D.

Who is to blame for the decline of the San Diego Chargers? Perhaps the answer is simply "regression to the mean." (Click link to see more.)

The Vikings win over the Chargers is a good reminder that matchups matter in the NFL, and the Vikings' run defense against any run-heavy offense is not a fair fight. Plus another excuse for Ned Macey to talk up Eric Parker, a comparison to "The Axeman," and yet more effusive praise for Adrian Peterson.

The Lions are 5-2? Really? And they're not winning with an explosive passing game, but rather an opportunistic defense? They continue to feast on mediocre offenses but that may not continue. Chicago, meanwhile, is starting to realize that leaving good enough alone in the off-season may not have been the best strategy.

I try to cut Don Banks some slack because it is impossible not to make mistakes in this type of quick react column. This week, however, he has a doozy:
"Didn't the Eagles used to have a running game? I mean, like late last season? Oh, that's right. That's when Jeff Garcia was their quarterback."

The Bills finally finished the deal, holding on for an upset of Baltimore. Of course, the Ravens are not all that impressive a team to beat -- they have no vertical pass threat and a flimsy pass defense. Kyle Boller is not the answer in Baltimore, but there is no guarantee Trent Edwards is the answer in Buffalo.
