Reported terms: five years, $40 million, ~$19 million guaranteed. Jay Glazer broke the story.
The Saints had to make a choice between Colston and Carl Nicks, and this contract seems like a decent value all things considered. Since Nicks was demanding to be the highest-paid guard in the NFL, it makes plenty of sense to go with Colston.

Peter looks at the inner dynamics of the Peyton Manning trips and also discusses how the St. Louis-Washington trade went down on Friday night. Finally, for good measure, a little dash of the Mark Sanchez extension.

The Redskins are taking a big risk by trading up in the draft for the opportunity to take Robert Griffin III. He projects as a great franchise quarterback, but the loss of so many picks will hurt the team's depth in the short- and long-term.

Reported terms of Sanchez's contract at this point: five years, $58.25 million, $20.5 million in guarantees for 2012 and 2013.
I would have posted about this last night, but I wasn't sure if it was a hilarious dream or not. Either way, obviously, this is a silly deal for a player who has played like Sanchez has to this point in his career. Maybe he will break out in season four and make it look respectable -- he has taken baby steps forward each year -- but it's hard to reconcile that with the fact that he'll make more money than Aaron Rodgers will next year.

The bad uses are mostly circumstantial, but, to be clear: keeping a talented running back on a one-year deal is good. Keeping your franchise quarterback on the tag despite having nearly eight months to negotiate with him, thus losing your All-Pro guard and star receiver, is bad.

This thread keeps a running list of players who have received the franchise tag.

Reported terms: 4 years, $31 million, $18 million guaranteed.
Not too far off the fabled DeAngelo Williams contract of last offseason. Me thinks we may see some much bigger running back contracts than some are comfortable with this time around. In fact, to some, this may be one of them.

The NFL announced the findings that a "bounty program" existed between the Saints and around 27 defensive players during the 2009-2011 seasons. Defensive players would get paid for knocking other players off the field via injury, and Saints general manager Mickey Loomis did not stop the program when directed to do so by owner Tom Benson.
Adam Schefter reports this is likely to cost the Saints multiple draft picks, more than SpyGate cost the Patriots.

Reported terms: six years, $44.5 million, $17.5 million in guarantees.
So, would you rather have Brooks at this price, or D'Qwell Jackson at his?

Obviously Jackson had a good season and was a terrific story in winning comeback player of the year, but my gut instinct says that's a lot of money for someone who played six games in the two years prior to 2011.
