As first reported by Adam Schefter, the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins will be Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. The Dolphins were previous involved in the Jeff Fisher derby and were also rumored to be hunting after other big name coaches (Cowher, Gruden, Billick). I have to admit Philbin kind of snuck up on me as a candidate, as I didn't hear his name much before this offseason, and he certainly lacks the pizzazz of the other names. He's not a name that will sell tickets, but winning seems to be the best long-term fan attractor.

Believe it or not, NFL front office executives may be paranoid, like to hire their own people, and can be overly detail-intensive even over ancillary things. When you're winning, this is called "commitment to excellent in all phases" and "perfectionist." When you're not, you're a "petty tyrant" and get compared to Captain Queeg (though not in this article).

The Chicago Bears have fired Jerry Angelo, ending his tenure as general manager after eleven seasons.
Lovie Smith will return, but is evaluating his coaching staff. Special teams coach Dave Toub is apparently on the interview list for the Dolphins head coaching job, and of course nobody expects Mike Martz to return as offensive coordinator.

In this week's Monday Morning Quarterback, Peter King writes about the Chiefs' upset win, the Lions' comeback, Drew Brees, Tony Romo, the new broadcast deals, and handicaps the Defensive Player of the Year race.

The Kansas City Chiefs have fired head coach Todd Haley, effective immediately. Haley went 19-27 as head coach of the Chiefs and won the AFC West last year.

As plugged in MMQB, here's the story from this week's Sports Illustrated on the health of the 1986 Cincinnati Bengals. Most players aren't like this, but safety David Fulcher says, "It was worth it while I was playing, but now I feel like, no, it wasn't worth it whatsoever."

In this week's Monday Morning Quarterback, Peter King touches on the comebacks of some AFC West quarterback, Ray Rice, and Peyton Manning's status. He also writes about SI's forthcoming special report on the current health of the 1986 Cincinnati Bengals 25 years later, which is something I'm very interested in reading. Bill Belichick's adherence to Jimmy Johnson's draft pick strategy is also mentioned.

The University of Miami's record streak of 149 consecutive weeks with a former player scoring a touchdown ended recently. FO commenter and researcher extraordinaire Travis put together this list of the longest touchdown streaks by college, including which players scored during the streak. Second longest streak? Ohio State, at 82 weeks in a row. Fun fact: Michigan had a 73 week streak contained entirely within Ohio State's streak.

In this week's Monday Morning Quarterback, Peter King draws some parallels between yesterday's Giants-Patriots game and some other Giants-Patriots game. He also writes about last week's podcast guest Ryan Leaf (really good interview, I thought), and mentions an AFC North quarterback could be on the hot seat going forward.

A bonus ten things from Peter King this week, as he starts off the column with his ten evident truths from the first eight weeks of the season. Later in the column, referee Ron Winter is described as "one party animal."
