Let us now praise great punters. Not ROBO-PUNTERs, but great punters nonetheless.

The Washington Redskins have traded a third-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons for running back T.J. Duckett. The Falcons then turned around and traded a third-round choice to Denver for wide receiver Ashley Lelie. Does this mean Portis' injury is more serious than first reported? Lelie is an interesting replacement for Brian Finneran but it seems to me that he duplicates Roddy White's strengths and weaknesses. Perhaps with Vick's arm strength, maybe it is best to have two deep threats. Anyway, I'm off to screw with KUBIAK yet again...

Yes, the rumors are true. Will Carroll's injury column will no longer be appearing at Football Outsiders; instead, he's moved on to the greener pastures of ESPN.com. However, even though Will is no longer part of Football Outsiders, he's still part of Football Outsiders. Huh? The explanation: He won't be writing for us during the season, but he'll still be contributing to Pro Football Prospectus 2007. We're here to provide him with things like similarity scores and he's around when the FO staff has injury questions.

And to think, we almost put Frank Gore on the cover of the book. This doesn't change Gore's projection much; we already expected him to easily beat out Barlow for the SF starting job. You can drop Cedric Houston down your cheatsheets, finally. Unless Barlow pulls a Lee Suggs and blows his physical...

The Texans really screwed up with Domanick Davis; apparently, his surgery didn't go well, they didn't realize it, and now the running back position is a mess. Who's the sleeper here -- Wali Lundy or Vernand Morency? And do we all just assume that Gary Kubiak's offense will give us a valuable fantasy running back? Or was the Denver running game so good not only because of the "one cut" system, but also because of the ability to identify undervalued talent at the offensive line and running back positions?

When teams are heavily penalized, who is responsible? It turns out there's plenty of blame to go around: not only to the players, but to the officials. Some officiating crews simply call more penalties than others, and different officiating crews call different penalties at different rates. When you get stuck with the more penalty-happy refs, you end up like the New York Giants: second in penalties in 2005, but also first in penalties by their opponents.

Time to once again open the FO Mailbag with questions on KUBIAK, defensive line stats, and partial success on third down. Plus, the results of the 2006 "Old Faces in New Places" contest and yet more Eli Manning similarity score talk.

Somewhere, Brian Stablein is crying tears of joy. Finally, someone understands his pain.

I know there's this rumor that we hate everything Atlanta-related, but that's actually not true. One example: We've been singing the praises of Brian Finneran for a couple of years. Which is why I am really bummed about this news that Finneran suffered a knee injury yesterday. The Falcons haven't announced the official MRI results yet, but all indications are that this is a torn ligament or patella tendon that will cost Finneran the season. Pressure on Michael Jenkins and Roddy White just went up, and there's really no depth behind them.
