PLEASE USE: Irrational Spygate Argument Thread

Well, we thought Spygate was dead and gone, but apparently not. So here is how we are going to work this. All discussion of Spygate, Patriots cheating, or cheating by any other team goes in this thread. It does not matter if you think the Patriots are evil, or if you think the Patriots are […]

Giants Lock Up David Diehl

The basics: six years, $31 million. The intrigue: “The key to the deal is annual escalator clauses that increase Diehl’s salaries between $750,000 and $1.1 million a year as long as he plays offensive tackle.” 2007 was Diehl’s first season at left tackle (he had played left guard previously), and the team was obviously happy […]

Ohio Celebrates a Game of Foot Ball

In Sunday’s New York Times I wrote a story about the 1890 Ohio State vs. Ohio Wesleyan game, which was the first intercollegiate football game for both schools.

MMQB: Ranking the Teams

Peter King lists his best-to-worst teams for the 2008 season (hey, at least he’s not doing a 2009 mock draft), motivates Rodney Harrison with his disrespect, keeps the Favre streak alive, and postulates that “a guard is a guard” — this, of course, is news to football lovers in Seattle.

Emmitt Smith has Advice for Pacman Jones

“As long as you’re not killing anybody, getting anybody shot at and going to jail, then I don’t have any issues.” Note to Emmitt: Pacman has gone to jail, and he has gotten somebody, not just shot at, but shot. He hasn’t killed anyone that we know of, but would it really be a surprise? […]

The Creative Difference

Long, in-depth feature from today’s San Francisco Chronicle about Mike Martz, his history, and the impact he may have on the San Francisco offense. Lots of interesting stuff here, but of course, it all comes down to whether Alex Smith (or Shaun Hill) is really any good.

Report: Marvin Harrison Investigated in Shooting Outside Bar

When I saw the headline, I just figured somebody accidentally typed “Marvin Harrison” instead of “Pacman Jones.”

P-F-R: Best Draft Classes

You get these lists every year, and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 1974 draft justifiably ends up at the top of every list, but Pro Football Reference’s Doug Drinen has put up a slightly more scientific method on his indispensable blog. Using his James-ian concept of Value Approximation, Drinen ranks the best draft classes since 1970 by […]

NFL Needs to Change How Rookies Are Paid

Finally, a reason to get excited about the Week 17 Washington-San Francisco game. Vernon Davis is totally going to want to kick Chris Cooley’s ass after he reads this. Cooley sure does have a point, though.

MMQB: Making Sense of the 2008 Draft

In his post-draft MMQB, Peter King details some very interesting top-level maneuvering that almost happened, the phone call that Arthur Blank will never get, what happened to Jon Gruden’s guts, and the continuation of that sometimes annoying science known as “Favre-ology” (Hint: It’s REALLY annoying during the draft, when we get a 10-minute cutaway interview […]

ESPN: Rams to select Chris Long

ESPN’s Michael Smith is reporting that the Rams have opted to make Virginia defensive end Chris Long the No. 2 overall selection in the draft. This would be the second year in a row that the Rams have spent a first-round pick on a defensive lineman. (They selected DT/DE Adam Carriker of Nebraska with the […]

Cowboys Trade Ayodele, Fasano To Dolphins

This is a weird trade from the Cowboys’ perspective, dealing a starting linebacker and a valuable blocking tight end for a fourth-round pick. The linked ESPN article says that it opens a spot for Zach Thomas, but assuming Thomas gets hurt, the real person it opens up a spot for is Bobby Carpenter.

A Draft When No One Drops?

At the New York Times Fifth Down blog, I write today that the six players at Radio City Music Hall are likely to be chosen before the draft is an hour old. Also this week I wrote about Leodis McKelvin, Gene Upshaw clinging to a system that hurts his membership, Rashard Mendenhall getting a raw […]

Baseball Prospectus Chat Transcript

The pre-draft chat on BP ended up having a LOT of Matt Ryan questions. Also featured is discussion of the Browns as well as probably the faintest of compliments I could pay Eli Manning.

Titans Agree to Trade Pacman to Dallas

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is one of several sources reporting that the Tennessee Titans have agreed to trade suspended cornerback Pacman Jones to the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas will send its fourth-round pick this season, and possibly a conditional pick next season, to the Titans in exchange for Jones, who was suspended for the […]

FO on ESPN.com: Adding Star WR Rarely Improves Team

After the recent success of Terrell Owens and Randy Moss, teams are chomping at the bit to trade for Chad Johnson. But Owens and Moss aside, adding a star receiver doesn’t generally lead to significant improvement. Losing a star receiver, however, usually leads to decline.

Jared Allen to Vikings

Officially, as of tomorrow. Are the Vikings a quarterback away from being the best team in the NFC? Jared Allen is a great player. This is a serious coup for Minnesota. The Chiefs will receive Minnesota’s first-round pick (17th overall) and two third-rounders. while the Chiefs will make Allen the highest-paid defensive lineman in football, […]

Bengals Reject Offer for Chad Johnson

ESPN reports that Cincinnati declined an offer from the Redskins of a first-round pick and a conditional pick in 2009 (third-round rising to first based on performance) for disgruntled wideout Chad Johnson.
Choice quote from Marvin Lewis during the same press conference:
“I think he’s a man of his word and says he’s not going to […]

Seahawks to Release Shaun Alexander

This is hardly surprising, especially after the Seahawks signed T.J. Duckett and Julius Jones this off-season, but Shaun Alexander isn’t long for Seattle. More shocking, maybe, was that the team gave Alexander an eight-year, $62 million deal in 2006. The 2005 NFL MVP has been hobbled by injuries and the Curse of 370 the last […]
