Clemson QB Tajh Boyd: Under Pressure

CBS play-by-play commentator Brent Musberger told his audience during the Georgia-Clemson contest that some scouts he’s talked to say that Boyd reminds them of Russell Wilson. This is no more accurate than saying South Carolina and North Carolina are alike. Just like the Cackalackies are in the same region, Boyd and Wilson are both mobile quarterbacks with some improvisational skill. This is where the comparison ends.

Every player reminds some scout of some other player. And conveniently it's almost always some recent player.

I love Tajh Boyd, but reports of his athleticism are wildly exaggerated. Watch a Clemson game and make note of how many of Boyd's rushes go for 10+ yards. Not many, if any. 20+ yards? None.

Boyd is a willing runner, a tough runner, and a patient, crafty runner, but he is not particularly quick or explosive, and he has no top end speed whatsoever. I doubt he's notably more athletic than, say, Drew Stanton.

If Boyd will succeed in the NFL, it will be from inside the pocket.
