Analyzing teams from the past

I hope this is the right forum for this question.

I'm curious as to whether there are any modern analyses or stats that have been applied to teams from the past. For example, comparing the 1967 Cowboys vs Rams defense.

I'll try a variant of my previous question: Are there any 'team strength' metrics? That is, are there any metrics of a teams overall strengths that are more sophisticated than 'points differential'?
