Bugs/Issues Thread

When you play with team defenses, they have their sacks projected as both defensive stats and offensive passing stats! Therefore, if your league penalizes sacks on passing plays, your defense gets penalized for the very same sacks that it produces!

fdctrumpet, use the filters on the top of each column in Excel.

Kick/Punt return yardage is absent.

Let me note, though, how much I appreciate the per-position PPR settings. Much better than manually doubling TE reception stats each update.

yes, return yards aren't showing up in the special teams column

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread

Shouldn't my players be color coded by position? They were in last years
spreadsheet, but it's not showing up that way now.

Tight Ends
by bcolt44 :: Thu, 08/11/2011 - 8:24pm

Not sure if I'm using it correctly. But when I look at tight ends, it has only one tight end scoring positively over the baseline. When I go the 'Scoring' sheet, I put in '1' under the tight end option. Shouldn't the 12th (in my case) rated tight end be at zero?

Re: Tight Ends
by Zac :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 8:50am

Check what you have "Waiver Adjustment" at. If it's set at 2, then TE (and also K, DEF, IDP) get lowered down, because the idea is that you aren't going to draft a backup at that position, so they get lowered down so the 12th starter gets lowered to what your last backup RB/WR/QB is.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by Aaron Schatz :: Thu, 08/11/2011 - 8:32pm

Yeah, we didn't get the kick/punt yardage in, or the colors done. We'll have that tomorrow night. We figured you wouldn't want to wait for it.

There's actually a note on the UPDATE page that explains.

I switched to Mac last year and just found out that the Macros will not work with Excel 2007 for Mac. Will the macros work with Excel 2010? Is there any way to get functionality with another program? I play in two very unconventional leagues and the basic Kubiak is not so much help.

Office 2011 for MAC or you need to use VM Ware or Parallels (perhaps others) and install windows; provided you have an intel based mac

Thanks D Roemeit, I do run Parallels to play Strat-o-Matic but I don't have Office on my Parallels machine. I got the 30-day trial of Excel 2011 which should hold me over til draft day if I can figure out how to get it installed.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread

I remember last year feeling like the playoff adjustment considered the weakness of the week 17 opponents for some reason even though it says it doesn't in the instructions. For instance last year the Steelers got a bump but one of their opponents during the fantasy playoffs had a good defense as projected. Anyhow, not sure if that was or is an issue this year but it felt pretty odd to me last year when looking at the DVOAs leading up to the playoffs ahead of time. Anyhow, I still went far and won at least half if not 2/3 of my leagues. I made it to the championship in all of them thanks to KUBIAK.

You going to turn the names of the players into links to go to the appropriate FO webpage so we can see the comparables quicker?

O and Matt Roth is missing... he signed with the Jaguars.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by Key19 :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 6:26pm

For some reason, I cannot re-sort the Fantasy Points Over Baseline column when I tweak various numbers like I could in the 2010 version. For example, if I change Andre Johnson's TDs to 0, his FPOB value plummets. Last year, I'd just right click any box in the FPOB column and hit "Sort Largest to Smallest" and Andre would get properly re-slotted in accordance with his new FPOB value. This year, that doesn't seem to work at all. The players no longer move when the Sort function re-slots their FPOB value, and as a result the numbers get really screwed up. Not sure why this would be broken, but it's a major problem for a guy like me who likes to tinker with a bunch of the projections. Any insight on how to fix this would be helpful. Thanks, and I love the projections as always! Nice work.

EDIT: The problem seems to be in the Sort function's auto-calibrated selection window. In 2010, the program "selects all" cells while performing the Sort function. In 2011, it only selects cell columns CM-CZ. This seems to be why the players don't move; their column (along with everything else to the left of CM) doesn't get automatically selected for some reason. Anyone know how to fix this?

EDIT 2: The BO-CC columns seem to be the cause of the problem. If you "select all" on any cell to the left of that region, it will only select all of the cells to the left of the BO-CC region. If you "select all" on any cell in the BO-CC range, it will only select all the cells in that range. And of course, if you do the same with any cell to the right of the BO-CC range, it'll only select all the cells to the right of the BO-CC range. I hope this helps diagnose the problem.

EDIT 3 - PROBLEM RESOLVED: The problem turned out to be the "Intentionally Left Blank" columns. Not sure why they are new in this year's version of KUBIAK, but I deleted them and things are working fine without them and my problem is also resolved now. I'll leave this post here just in case anyone else has this problem.

Auction values for the version I downloaded earlier today are wildly off from the version I just downloaded - even with the same settings. Under "baseline" the auction adjustment went from .3899 this morning to .6421 tonight. I triple checked my scoring settings and both sheets are identical.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by spitz10 :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 9:34am

I'm looking at the auction value column (DA) - I am in a 14 team league with an $82.50 cap. Am I missing something, or should the sum of that column not be $1155? Kubiak is currently showing $1120 (so $35 off).

Anyone see a similar problem, or can explain this to me?

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by bird jam :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 1:04pm

Similarly, I am in a 12-team ($200 cap) league so my total auction values should be $2400. I currently get $2392.40. It's close, I suppose, but it still seems like that should be $2400 or something like $2399.99. That's about seven and a half bucks unaccounted for.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by bird jam :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 3:47pm

The most recent update has a total for all players of $2384.53 . The problem seems to be getting worse.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by Zac :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 4:41pm

This sounds like the same bug I found last year. When I get home I'll figure out where the mistake in the formula was, and then maybe one of these years someone will actually fix that so that we don't have to do it ourselves.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by bird jam :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 5:11pm

Cool. If you find it, let me know.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by Zac :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 6:54pm

Alright, change the formula in C40 of the baselines tab to
=((nrAuctionBudget*nrPlayers)-(nrAuctionMin*nrAuctionPopulation))/SUM(OFFSET($'2011 KUBIAK Projections'.CZ2,0,0,nrAuctionPopulation-nrAuctionBenchCount,1))

And change the formula in C41 to
=((nrAuctionBudget*nrPlayers)-(nrAuctionMin*C36)-nrSalarySpent)/(SUM(OFFSET($'2011 KUBIAK Projections'.CZ2,0,0,nrAuctionPopulation-nrAuctionBenchCount,1))-C34)

Add up everything in column DA of the 2011 Projections Tab. If it worked it should be within a few dollars of your total salary cap. I have a total league salary of $2400, and I'm getting a total of $2403 now. The extra $3 isn't because of this calculation, it's because there are 207 players listed with an auction value, even though only 204 are getting drafted.

If this ends up being correct, then maybe we can make sure that someone in charge sees this so that I don't have to figure this out again next year :)

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by bigdumbjay :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 7:47pm

Thanks for the formula - I'm getting a formula error in Office 2007 with the first reference in the OFFSET function. It doesn't seem to like $'2011 KUBIAK Projections'.CZ2

I'm wondering if that's a unique issue to my software, or if anyone else is getting that?

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by Zac :: Sat, 08/13/2011 - 5:00pm

How many people get drafted in your league, and how many have a value of $1 or more?

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by spitz10 :: Sat, 08/13/2011 - 5:13pm

Hmmmm, kinda tricky. Technically its a dynasty league - 14 teams, each team has 25 roster spots, cap of $82.50, and minimum salary of $0.75.

Presumably though, you could just assume it was a standard draft league, in which case 350 players would be drafted. We also have 5-IDP flex spots though.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by bird jam :: Tue, 08/16/2011 - 9:08am

And now $2382.61. Definitely getting worse. Aaron and Sean? Little help?

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by Aaron Schatz :: Tue, 08/16/2011 - 10:28am

The answer is that we've never been able to work out a formula that both:

1) Makes the total add up to the actual total of dollars spent in the league
2) Forces prices on a specific number of bench players to be league minimum in order to simulate the way auction drafts actually work out in fantasy football

If you can figure out how to make it work, please feel free to contact us, but we figure 2 is more important than 1. Values are supposed to be approximate anyway. Just as the projections don't actually mean that we believe that players are guaranteed to hit those numbers, dollar values don't actually mean that players are guaranteed to be worth that amount.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by bird jam :: Tue, 08/16/2011 - 2:11pm

I understand that it is difficult to create an auction values spreadsheet and my technical know-how is depressingly wanting. So I can't offer any help on formulas and such, especially at the level of Excel mastery KUBIAK seems to be. But back when I was doing a spreadsheet the old-fashioned way (calculating FPOB by position, generating an "x" number, then multiplying it all out for dollar values,) the number always added up to the total dollar figure. That seemed like the easy part. Again, I could be wrong - incorporating #2 may make #1 impossible. (Although I wonder if there might be a way that we could input the number of $1 players we anticipate will be drafted, and then split up the rest of the money among the remaining players. The # of $1 players in my league is fairly constant...)

I also understand that these dollar figures are, for lack of a better word, "estimates" just as projections are estimates. But I think you are making the best the enemy of the better there. The figures may be estimates, but I assume you want the estimates to be as good as possible, no? And I can't tell you with any certainty what any single player will do on the field this year, but I can tell you one thing with certainty: every team in my league will spend every dollar they have at the auction. I would think - despite the obvious impossibility of getting any of this stuff exactly right - you would aim to be as close to perfect as possible.

Just like last year, I get a basic scripting error when I generate using OpenOffice. Last year I got around it be e-mailing the spreadsheet to my office computer, which has Excel, and hope I didn't get caught. I was hoping not to have to do that this year.

Is there a fix, or a compatible version of KUBIAK for OpenOffice or Works (curse my rotten luck to have purchased both computers during the ill-fated Works days)?

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by jabrch :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 12:30pm

I saw a note somewhere that it is not compatible with Open Office. You can move files from a PC to another PC without emailing it. I know "disks" have gone the way of the dodo bird, but you can use a USB memory stick or any other device to move that file.

"peripherlaly" un/related note - I was cleaning out my basement and found an assortment of the following...

8 inch floppy diskettes
5.25 in floppy diskettes (double density I might add)
Iomega ZIP disks
3.5 in disks
A Bernoulli Box
A Jaz drive

and my crown jewel - my old Compaq "portable" computer. For anyone who believes that was actually "portable", I'd like to see them carry arond a stack of 10 laptops with a handle - and try and "work" on a 9 inch green screen... Sorry - I digress...

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by Zac :: Fri, 08/12/2011 - 4:39pm

I use go-oo ( http://go-oo.org/ ) which is a flavor of open-office that is more Excel compatible. The scripts compile at least, but the flex baseline didn't update at all. I had to change it in the baselines tab manually and then manually sort by the points over baseline column.

A couple things people should know if they try this (I would not recommend it unless you are pretty good with spreadsheets and can figure out whether the numbers it's showing are correct).

1. You have to do a Find/Replace on the cheatsheets tab. Make sure you're searching in formulas (probably have to click the more options button to get that to show up), do a find for FALSE() and replace it with FALSE . You need to do that because open-office considers FALSE a constant, whereas in Excel false is defined by a function.

2. For some reason, some TEs get their position changed to AA. I'm pretty sure this happened to me last year as well. I think it's a bug in the script, and I'll look it up and see if I can find where it happens. You have manually change them all back to TE.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread

Instead of go-oo you should switch to libreoffice. I can't get the auction values to work in it, but otherwise most of the spreadsheet seems functional.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread

Well I had a bunch of errors due to capitalization differences. Once I fixed them in the macro to match the defined names that part was fine. However I can't get the flex baseline to work right now.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by dlorenw :: Tue, 08/16/2011 - 12:24am

Just downloaded the 8/15/ update. The auction values for QBs are all haywire and I'm not sure why. In the 8/14 version the qb values are in line. That is the auction values seem to track the values for other players. Vick's value is right between the value of the RB above him and the RB beneath him. In the 8/15/ QB auction values are way out of line, somewhere in the nature of 60% of the auction values of the 8/14 update and way lower than, in Vick's case, the RB above him and the RB below him. I've triple checked my settings and I genuinely don't think I've screwed up scoring in any way (I'm trying to approximate a standard ESPN scoring league as closely as possible -- can't quite make that happen with team defense points surrenderred defaults in KUBIAK). have I screwed something up or did something in the 8/15 update go haywire? Ideas??

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread

Are the playoff strength-of-schedule adjustments right? The big negative adjustment for Minnesota was surprising to me given who they're playing in weeks 14-16, and then when I looked at the instruction page, it still had this specific reference to strong defenses at the end of Minnesota's *2010* schedule:

"For example, Minnesota players have an adjustment below 100% because the Vikings play strong defenses in Weeks 14-16 (Giants, Bears, Eagles) and a weak defense in Week 17 (Lions)."

It's possible that this is just a cosmetic error on the instruction page, and the explanation for the numbers is that KUBIAK thinks the Lions, Saints, and Redskins (Minnesota's actual 2011 Week 14-16 opponents) have much better defenses than I expect. But given the surprising number and erroneous text, I wanted to make sure the adjustments were correct and updated for 2011.

2. I *can* run the Save/Import macro directly. When I do so, the settings file doesn't save to C:\temp, but to the last folder I opened a file from. And it looks to import from the same folder (did an experiment to confirm that a different set of settings in C:\temp were not loaded).

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by spujr :: Fri, 08/19/2011 - 10:53am

Besides the save/import functions listed above I noticed a couple of other (small things):

Some league score settings are not taken into account. I don't know if they are too random to predict or not included because they are not important. I will just add them as a FYI:

1. 2 point conversion scoring
2. Field goals missed based on yardage (ie. -2 for missing a 0-19 yard kick)
3. Defense/special teams block kick points (ie 2 points for team block kick)

Lastly, this is more cosmetic, but I thought I would point it out:

Shouldn't cells C40, C44, and C50-52 on the "Scoring" sheet be written with a formula like:
="Receiving Game Bonus WR ("&E50&" yard)"

Again, it's very minor. Otherwise everything looks very well done and awesome. Thanks!

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread

OK, it looks like there's some kind of problem with the Active X controls that handle saving and importing score settings. We're trying to fix it.

We don't do two-point conversions, FG missed based on yardage, or blocked kicks because they are too random to predict.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread
by lechrus2@yahoo com :: Fri, 09/09/2011 - 11:40am

I made several posts in the Experts League Results article discussing the weird anomaly that went down in my auction draft. I'd really like someone from FO to weigh in on the subject. I'll re-post the jist of it here.

In my auction draft the following results occurred:
Top 15 QB's went for 166% of the KUBIAC auction values on average
Top 30 RB's went for 75% of the KUBIAC auction values on average
Top 30 WR's went for 100% of the KUBIAC auction values on average

I have spent quite some time deliberating on the cause of this systematic anomaly. I struggle accepting that this was dynamic of our particular auction/league because the results were too consistent. I think it may have something to do with how FO ranks the relative values of QB's to RB's in my scoring system. I have triple checked the entries for our scoring system and manually checked the value for several QBs and RBs to be sure that KUBIAC was accurately calculating the values and found the projections were accurate.

Might there a problem with the algorithm that ranks the relative importance of QB contribution versus RB contribution in my scoring sytem? I believe this is a value based approach. FO noted that QB's in their expert auction draft were consistently undervalued indicating perhaps a similar issue with the relative rankings of QB's versus other positions.

Re: Bugs/Issues Thread

I think you're confusing the value of those players with what they are expected to go for. KUBIAK doesn't tell you what players will go for in your league. It can't possibly account for the personalities of the people in your league. It merely tells you, based upon the projected stats of players (and what those stats will yield using the scoring system you put into it,) what those players are WORTH. Not what they will go for at the auction.

In my league, the top QBs rarely go for what KUBIAK says they are worth, and most WRs go for a lot more. When I run my KUBIAK projections, I have to take that into account. If it says Larry Fitzgerald is "worth" $40, I have to realize that in my league it is going to cost me a lot more than that to get him. (On the flipside, when it tells me that Phillip Rivers will be worth $70, I know I probably won't have to spend that to get him.)

I think an option that might be useful to auction drafters would be a place on the scoring page to input league history stats and spit out values that way. For instance, if I could put in that my league drafts on average 24 QBs and spends, say, $350 on them. Do that across all positions and then adjust the values accordingly.

That may be too complicated for Aaron and Sean to accomplish but if it's not I think it would be helpful.

What birdjam said. The auction values do not predict average auction values in the wild any more than snake draft KUBIAK rankings predict ADP.

If you want average auction values, you can look those up very easily on the web or on your league homepage, then use KUBIAK to compare and pinpoint undervalued players.
