The technique number indicates where a defensive lineman lines up before the snap relative to the offensive line. A 0-technique player lines up directly across from the center, and the numbers go up as you move outward, with even numbers across from an offensive lineman and odd numbers in a gap between offensive linemen. 1 technique is between the C & and a G, 2 technique is across from G, 3 between G & OT, 4 across from OT, 5 between OT & TE (or where the TE would be), 6 across from TE (or where the TE would be). Penetrating, one-gap defensive linemen typically use an odd-numbered technique, while two-gap linemen use an even-numbered technique.
