Gonzalez + Mendenhall for Gates?

I'm in a PPR league and am thinking of trying to trade for Gates. My roster is stacked, though I'm only mediocre at QB (Ryan), and have T Gonzalez at TE. I think I could upgrade to Gates, but would lose Mendenhall in the process. My other RBs/WRs are Foster, Forte, B Jackson, R Moss, R Wayne, S Moss, H Ward, R Williams. I really want to move Gonzalez + a RB/WR for Gates, but the other owner won't take somebody on the order of a Gonzo + a S Moss/H Ward type (even though he's weak at RB2 and Flex). I can't decide if I want to pull the trigger. I know Gates would give me WR production at TE, but KUBIAK was pretty high on Mendenhall, and I like that he's really the only RB option in Pittsburgh. Am I over-thinking this?

You're looking at a pretty significant boost with Gates (~50 points), but you have to consider the drop from Mendenhall to your worst starting RB. Assuming you start 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 Flex, you need to compare the following lineups:

Mendenhall, Foster, Forte, Moss, Wayne, Gonzo

Foster, Forte, Moss, Wayne, Ward, Gates

You'd end up probably starting Ward or BJax at Flex and suffer a drop at RB, so you're downgrading at two positions in order to bolster TE.

It mainly comes down to how reliable you think Foster will be, because he's really your main potential downgrade. I'd try to sell Foster or Forte high this week rather than give up Mendenhall.

Keep the safety on.
I can't imagine a league setup where I'd trade Mendenhall straight up for Gates, much less Mendenhall AND Gonzalez. Maybe Foster, but this seems like a real overpay for Gates.

Agree, too much to pay for Gates. A Sig injury to Gates this year would really hurt you after that deal.
