Inevitable Mistake and Typo Thread

We always have errors in the book, unfortunately, no matter how much copyediting we do. Please let us know about those here so that we can correct those in updated editions of the book.

Pretty big mistake in the Browns chapter. Tanier says the Browns traded a 3rd and 4th round pick for Davone Bess. In reality, the Browns sent the Dolphins a fourth rounder (104) and a fifth rounder (164) in exchange for Bess, the Dolphins fourth round pick (111) and a seventh rounder (217).

It's a big deal only because it's one of the poles in a front office confusion tent that Tanier is trying to build. Also worth noting that the "power struggle" between Banner and Lombardi he refers to in May didn't actually happen. The only source I can find for that is an ESPNCleveland answer clarifying who is making personnel decisions. I don't think that qualifies as erupting rumors of a power struggle. The Browns are enough of a mess without making up more reasons why they're terrible.

I wouldn't normally do two comments but what the hell. Later in the defensive players analysis, Craig Robertson is identified as Craig Robinson. Additionally, he's described as the "first guy to hit the bench in nickel." It's actually the opposite, he was their best and most used nickel linebacker last year, as described in this article (http://www.ohio.com/sports/browns/battles-of-berea-browns-giving-craig-r...)

I hate to be picky but in the 49er chapter you say that Alex Boone was added by Baalke in the post Singletary era when he was actually drafted under Singletary, Mike was the one that sat him down for the 'do you want an NFL career or another drink?' chat. (bottom of page 196)

You also have the chance to update the niners' resigning Justin Smith in the defensive player section. (p202)

Nope, he's right. For example, Knile Davis' combine weigh in was 227lbs (listed under 40 time) and his 40 time was 4.37* seconds (listed under weight).

*Wikipedia lists it a 4.35.

Re: Inevitable Mistake and Typo Thread

I guess I don't understand the units, then. Usually a number like '4.37' would be a 40 time, in seconds. But if it's a weight, then Knile Davis weighs 4.37... decikilograms? Tristone? Unusual.

One way to catch mistakes in names like these (Kaepernick, Roethlisberger, Manumaleuna, Aromashodu... etc) by adding the correct spelling into the dictionary list. So when you make a typo in the name, the spell check will catch it.

Argh. That should be there and will be on the re-release. In the meantime, you can click on the chapter headers on the table of contents and jump to the appropriate page. But then you have to get back to the contents page to jump elsewhere, which is annoying.

College Football Omission?
by valaj11 :: Wed, 07/17/2013 - 11:50am

Why is there no chart listing the various ratings and projections for all 125 teams as there has been in the past?

The Cover of the Guide says "Expanded coverage and projections for all 125 FBS teams" but that is not the case. The intro to the college section also indicates that all 125 teams are projected below but that is not the case.

I know that there has never been a write up or full chart for each individual team, but in the past there have been confernce preview charts listing the odds for conference and overall records for each team along with a single large chart listing all 125 teams.

Can that be added or can I somehow get a single page listing all 125 teams? This is one of the primary reasons I purchase the publication each year and I was very disappointed to see it omitted this year.

Thanks!

P. 42: "Charles Tillman led the NFL in forced fumbles and had one of the more unique seasons in our database last season." While it's become so common that it's likely going to be accepted soon, as it stands it's still not generally considered proper to call something "more unique," since "unique" is a mathematical absolute (one of a kind). He either had a unique season or one of the more unusual seasons in your database.

P. 44: "The rookie class brought a pair of promising-if-oft-injured receivers, a starting guard in Kevin Zeitler, and linebacker Vontae Burfict . . . " Should be "Vontaze."

"The Bengals biggest offensive problem last season was their lack of quality weapons to complement A.J. Green." Should be "The Bengals' biggest."

"Jermaine Graham and BenJarvus Green-Ellis are capable players . . . " Should be Jermaine Gresham.

Re: Inevitable Mistake and Typo Thread

P. 82: " . . . how different and unique each situation was; . . ." see above regarding "more unique." The same applies to "how unique."

P. 87, possibly not a mistake: "Predictable, because the Texans lost both right guard Mike Brisiel and Eric Winston . . ." Since you listed Brisiel's position, it seems like you probably wanted to say "right tackle Eric Winston" and just forgot, but it's not really an error and perhaps it's just that you thought Winston was well-known enough that everyone knew his position.

P. 89: " . . . Watt is such a unique player historically." I should probably stop pointing this one out, and I'm sorry for continuing to do so because it is nitpicking, but I am after all the son of an English professor. He is such a historically unusual player or he is a historically unique player (and in his case, the latter undoubtedly makes sense).

P. 101, not adding any quotation marks to avoid confusion: “The “dirty dozen” players that remain include quarterback Blaine Gabbert, wide receiver Justin Blackmon and punter Bryan Anger. Those are selections that may have, at some point in the last two seasons, caused Smith to pull a Gob Bluth from Arrested Development and mutter to himself “I’ve made a huge mistake.”” Either the attribution of the quote is missing and the internal quotation marks around "dirty dozen" and "I've made a huge mistake" should be changed to single marks (') or there is an extra set of quotation marks around the entire phrase.

Technically, 1986 was the fourth professional season for Reggie White, who had played full seasons in the USFL in the springs of 1984 and 1985 and the NFL in the fall of 1985.

P. 171: "Some in the scouting community have called Johnson the most athletically gifted offensive linemen prospect in years.
Should be "offensive line prospect" or "offensive lineman."

P. 172: "But in reality, Ryans’ limitations may be better hid in a 3-4, where he’ll have less ground to cover. The truth is he’s much better against the run than the pass regardless of formation."
Should be "better hidden." It also seems quite odd to use "in reality" one sentence and "the truth is" the next sentence. I don't think it's technically a mistake, but it just reads like a lack of conviction more than anything else.

P. 181: "The league has expanded four times since then . . . "
The league has added four teams, but since two of them were added at the same time, the league has really only expanded three times.

P. 195: " . . . and actually advanced farther in the playoffs."
Should be further.

P. 203: " . . . one of the most unique . . ." and " . . . some of the more unique . . . "
Since I brought up the other times, I might as well list these.

P. 212: "Let’s turn the reigns over to our game charters . . . "

"Lowdown" is one word.

"But the racial dynamics of the 'capitol of Black America' can’t be so simply dismissed."

Did anyone else notice what a hot mess the 2012 Raiders Stats by Week Box is? Guess there aren't too many FO Raiders fans. Not that I'm dying to see a correct version of that box, but I suppose it was correctly updated in a newer PDF version? (I have the book).
