Referee
by Diz (not verified) :: Fri, 01/08/2010 - 4:54pm

just to note:

CIN-NYJ- Leavy- he has a 79% win % for home team

NE-BAL- Steratore- highest points per game in the league; low on penalties (good for scoring. bad for penalties bec BAL is one of the worst)

DAL-PHI- Hochuli- 36% of home teams win

ARI-GB- Green- middle of the pack. happy its not one who calls a ton because of GB aggressive D

There is obviously more to a game than a ref, but Good luck!

what site has all the nfl referee data?

Re: Referee
by cfn_ms :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:31pm

This is just amazing, it really fells like the refs are throwing this game or Cincy. There have been multiple penalties that just look like BS against the Jets. Good work noting that the Cincy ref overwhelmingly favors the home team, because it sure looks like it here.

Love seeing the Eagles DVOA graph. As an Eagles fan, I do respect Dallas.....and I am tired of the "Dallas hasn't won a playoff game in 13 years talk. Philly did have many chances last week (at least in the first half), and I think this will be a high scoring game that the eagles somehow win.

I think the Jets will get a huge early lead, Bengals will come back, but too little too late

Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

I haven't watched much bengals football, but does anyone have any insight as to why they moved away from a no-huddle offense?

Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by tally :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 5:55pm

Good l0rd, I've forgotten about Theismann doing games. I suppose this is the one game Gibbs can reasonably call--both offenses are probably right out of the 80s.

12
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Pat F. :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 5:57pm

Joe Theismann is the announcer on Sky sports now. Man this brings back memories.

(after the Jets' delay of game on the wildcat)
Theismann: "Brad Smith is not used to locating the play clock on the field."
Other Guy: "Smith, who played quarterback for four years in college..."

I think this is going to quickly become a bloodbath in Cincinnati's favor.

Theismann! Arrrrrrrrgggggh.

Though Gibbs seems ok so far.

Also, apparently Wes Welker is having issues...

Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dave :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:07pm

Loving this announcing team.

Apparently putting Brad Smith in at QB and running an option is "that wildcat."

The Bengals show us all why noone ever runs the option in the NFL.

Feely is punting because Weatherford is sick. Now I understand why the punts suck.

15
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Mike Y :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:11pm

I think all the road teams will win this weekend.

So the Jets punter is "ill", so Jay Feely, the PK, is punting. Seems to be doing ok. PKs are obviously able to punt, so why waste a roster spot on a punter at all? I'm sure that spot can be used better on a WR, DB, LB, or QB. Does that extra 5-10 yards of punting average, if that would be the case at all, really worth a roster spot?

79
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Harris :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:12pm

It's not just about punting, though. A kicker who punts is a kicker who's not spending time worrying about his primary job. It's like the long-snapper. It seems like a waste of a roster spot until you watch the snap sail over the punters head for the third time.

Hail Hydra!

80
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Mike Y :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:20pm

At least a long-snapper has to block, run, and make tackles. Long-snappers don't make the NFL based solely on their ability to snap a ball accurately 15 yards behind the line.

And how much thought has to go into punting? If a kicker practiced punting, I'm sure they would become at least decent at it. And it's not like kickers are overburdened with duties in practice. Just spend some time punting.

101
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Still Alive (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:45pm

Yes an extra 5-10 yards a punt is absolutely worth a roster spot. A couple of those bottom barrel roster spots are for helping ST anyway...

110
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by T. Diddy :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:58pm

If you have a kicker who can punt in a pinch and a punter who can kick in a pinch, then when one is injured you have a replacement. If you only have one guy for both jobs and he gets hurt, then it's nothing but two-point conversions and going for it on fourth down for you for the rest of the game.

. . . Put that way, more teams should have one guy for both jobs.

Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Botswana Meat Commission FC (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:15pm

Nice shot of Damato Peko in full plumage. You know he's excited about Soundgarden getting back together.

17
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dan :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:15pm

And the Bengals waste their 2nd challenge.

18
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by underthebus :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:15pm

Looks like Thomas Jones' knee is really bothering him.

19
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Rocco :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:16pm

The Bengals are about to be out of challenges in the first quarter. Sure looked like a catch to me.

20
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Mello :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:16pm

Awful awful use of challenges.

21
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Brendan Scolari :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:16pm

Why on Earth would Lewis challenge that? It was a catch but even if it wasn't it's still only 15 yards at midfield. And now the Bengals are out of challenges the rest of the game, which could potentially be huge later. Incredibly stupid.

22
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dave :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:17pm

Marvin Lewis blows both challenges on obvious calls in the first quarter. Wow.

23
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dave :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:18pm

Braylon Edwards amuses me.

24
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Rocco :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:18pm

Why am I not surprised Braylon Edwards dropped a sure touchdown?

25
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

Way to step up for the playoffs Braylon.

26
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by pouringlizards (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:18pm

How on earth is that a 'good challenge,' Theissman? How?

31
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Pat F. :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:22pm

I like how he said it was a good challenge then spent 5 minutes discussing in detail why it was not a good challenge.

Honestly, though, why on EARTH would you challenge that? I guess if you win you get the ball back, but for chrissakes it's the 1st quarter and it's not like they're in danger of getting buried early.

32
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Brendan Scolari :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:23pm

Did you see his vaunted punting abilities? I'd probably do the exact opposite of whatever he thought was right.

27
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

And Braylon Edwards has shown for this game I see.

Ah, good ole braylon, always good for one jaw-dropping drop.

29
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Chattanooga Chuck (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:19pm

I was hoping the catch would be overturned just to show up that showboating official on the sideline.

30
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by pouringlizards (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:21pm

That official did look a bit like someone doing a move from a bad musical.

33
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Botswana Meat Commission FC (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:23pm

Was that even a drop by Bray-Bray? He just kind limply stuck on hand out a bit. "Meh, I don't really want this touchdown."

34
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Theo :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:26pm

If dropping a ball would hurt, Edwards would be dead.

35
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dan :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:29pm

It's the Madden FB fake HB toss for the Jets TD.

37
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

Here it worked.
First time ever that the AI is smarter than the real life counterparts?! Whoa!

39
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Brendan Scolari :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:33pm

That play works pretty well for me in Madden personally.

45
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Theo :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:36pm

I only run HB counters. I'll try the fake someday.

46
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Brendan Scolari :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:37pm

Ugh, I hate it when people don't play realistically in Madden. :-)

I think all the plays work fine for the most part, save for sweeps. They can still be big plays occasionally though. I do agree counters work the best.

81
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Mr Shush :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:20pm

I've never got the hang of dual analogue sticks, so ever since they brought in the passing cone I've just run every down, from a variety of exciting formations. FB fake HB toss is a terrific play in the right situation - ie short yardage, where FB dive would be a realistic call. Don't try it on second and long.

191
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by johnny walker (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 10:18pm

The vision cone has been gone for a couple years now. Maybe give it another shot - along with the slowed gameplay in '10 it's a lot easier to get the passing game going. Deep ball's still pathetically broken though, and tons of routes don't work right (curls etc) since throwing before the WR comes outt've his break turns it into a streak.

41
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Rocco :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:34pm

It works decently well for me in NCAA. I don't play Madden so I can't speak for it there, but it's good in college when I have a back with decent speed.

36
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Theo :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:30pm

Nice play, nicer fake. 10 people running the play as if it was a run to the right, the HB runs it left.

38
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

Too easy, there.

40
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by underthebus :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:33pm

For all the crap Sanchez gets, he does do some things really well, like fakes and play action passes.

41
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by adamj (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:34pm

and keller with the egregious block-in-the-back, followed by jt praising him while the slow-motion shows the uncalled penalty. fun for people who backed the bengals.

43
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Theo :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:34pm

Oh come on!
The kicker will be perfectly fine tomorrow.

44
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Neubauer :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:34pm

Don't like the illegal contact call. Palmer is looking really jittery so far. Even his completions are off target.

47
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Theo :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:38pm

I don't know if he ever really came back from his injury...

50
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Rocco :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:40pm

Didn't he mess up his elbow last year and told he needed Tommy John surgery but decided against it?

53
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by FireOmarTomlin :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:42pm

I'd like a side by side comparison on a slant route, for example. His velocity looks to be down 10-15% to the naked eye, to me.

Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by MilkmanDanimal :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:44pm

My thoughts as I find my wife has scheduled dinner out with some of her friends on the first Saturday of playoff football:

"@#$@$!!! woman needs to ask me first stupid dinner don't wanna go grumble grumble".

My thoughts as I hear Joe Theismann's voice.

"I love my wife, thanks for dinner, let's run away from the TV."

61

How do you end up behind a computer?

63
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by JoseTortilla :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:51pm

This. It was crazy how fast my playoff enthusiasm deflated when I saw the announcing team.

57
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by pouringlizards (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:46pm

Awful tackling by the Bengals there. No real attempt to stop Keller.

58
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

Are these announcers even watching this game?

59
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by underthebus :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:48pm

I'm betting palmer is really missing Housh right now.

60
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by hippoes :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:49pm

The Bengals need to end the half down by no more than 7, a small victory.

62
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dan :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:50pm

Another illegal contact on Revis. Who'd he get shoved by this time?

64
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dave :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:53pm

He uses his hands a fair amount. He just doesn't do it egregiously. Would be nice to see what he's actually being called for though.

Edit: seems he got away with one in the end zone in that montage. That was well past 5 yards.

66
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dan :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:55pm

You may well be right, but the first one they called on him should've been going the other way - he was pushed by Caldwell.

68
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dave :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:57pm

Yeah, I thought that was the case when I saw how open Caldwell got on that route. Didn't see the foul as it happened or on replay and was confused by the call.

65
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Theo :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:53pm

I'm not familiar with commentators...
Either have an annoying voice, and be informative, or have a normal voice and be tolerable. Don't have an annoying voice and say stupid things. Who is that?

67
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by hippoes :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:56pm

Annoying voice = Joe Gibbs.
Stupid things = there's three of them.

70
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by underthebus :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:59pm

I kind of like gibbs.

71
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Theo :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:02pm

Thanks CBS, they just showed them. I was talking about Gibbs.
"Can't have turnovers"
No shit, sorry coach, we were doing it on purpose.

69
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by pouringlizards (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 6:59pm

Gibbs joking about not understanding the 46. My god. It's not like he coached against a division rival that used it all the time or anything.

72
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by hippoes :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:03pm

Are NFL punters going to be the next dodo?

77
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Theo :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:07pm

Hope so. They're overrated.
Although the Koenen experiment didn't go well, I can't imagine that there aren't kickers who can do punting and kick off duties.

82
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Levente from Hungary :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:20pm

It was the other way around. Koenen is a punter who ventured into kicking. We are now talking about kickers picking up punting.

73
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dan :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:03pm

Bengals run up the middle to end the half instead of taking a knee, and Caldwell gets hurt.

74
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

Joe Gibbs telling Theismann not to speak. I'm liking him better, now.

75
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Neubauer :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:04pm

I'm impressed with Sanchez this first half. Missed a couple of throws but he's played very well when he's had to throw it considering his inexperience.

86

93
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Brendan Scolari :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:39pm

Everyone knows what he means, not a big deal if you ask me. I'd complain about all the stupid analysis or butchering of names before complaining about not saying the exact variation of a certain formation one team is running. But, to each his own...

87
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by RavensFan (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:30pm

94
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

He did indeed.

89
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

That is officially 2 awful PI calls against Revis. Both were closer to offensive PI than defensive.

90
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

I like the Bengals in this game, but that long PI was bullshit.

95
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by t.d. :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:39pm

I know it's been commented on above, but Sanchez has been quite good when called upon today, against a top-notch secondary. It does look like the 2004 Roethlesberger model for success, but he's been very effective at it.

97
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Brendan Scolari :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:41pm

Is Shon Greene pretty good or is it just the Jets line/Bengals run defense?

98

Man, a lot of poor timeout usage today.

100

Too easy.

102
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by t.d. :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:47pm

Sure, Rex Ryan is a little crazy, but this Jets team does kind of look like a tough out right now. They should be able to control the game against the Colts like the Dolphins did (I know they lost, but still)

104
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Levente from Hungary :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:52pm

I hope they will control the game against the Chargers :-)

117
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by t.d. :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 8:02pm

yeah, me too. Didn't mean to suggest the Pats were a given. And the Bengals had shown they can run on the Jets before this touchdown.

105
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Mr Shush :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:54pm

Assuming they play the Colts, of course. I don't think it's a given that the Patriots will beat the Ravens.

106
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Rocco :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 7:56pm

It helps that the Bengals offense seems tailor-made for the Jets D to handle- they don't have a big-time TE, only one good WR, no deep threat, and weren't smart enough to pound the ball when it was close. They're playing extremely well today though, and you get the feeling that as long as they aren't in spots where they have to throw, their offense will be okay.

Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

And the Bengals running game plays much better today than what can be expected from either SD or Indy.

Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by RavensFan (not verified) :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 8:05pm

I actually disagree. I think the best way to beat a Rex Ryan D is to spread it out. Go into 3 and 4 receiver sets with some quick outs to neutralize the pass rush. It would seem that injuries to Caldwell and Coles are making this strategy tough. A healthy Coles on, say, Jim Leonard is advantage Bengals. Then, after moving the chains a few times this way, run up the middle through the Kris-Jenkins-sized-hole in the D-line.

125
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Rocco :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 8:09pm

The Bengals don't have the horses to spread it out and be effective. It also isn't helping that Palmer is either hurt or choking. They've ran the ball decently well but seemed IMO to give up on it too early.

153
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Dan :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 8:29pm

It looked like Cosby was hitting Coleman, not the other way around.

Late hits out of bounds are probably the most overcalled penalty. Any other time when a player becomes unhittable the defense has a buffer zone where they won't be flagged for hitting him (a QB after he throws it, a player who's been tackled to the ground, a RB going into the end zone), but with a player at the sideline it's instantaneous - you're expected to pull up as he's approaching the sideline.

141
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

Carson Palmer + receivers dropping passes + Revis on defense = outs, slants, hitches and 2nd and 10s.

Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion

Killer missed field goals by Kris Brown are a big part of the reason the Bengals are playing the Jets not the Texans. Given how the regular season edition of that one went, they might not have enjoyed it much more than this.

159
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by t.d. :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 8:35pm

167
Re: Saturday Wild Card Discussion
by Mr Shush :: Sat, 01/09/2010 - 8:49pm

13-3 would have required an awful lot of breaks, but certainly 10 or 11 wins wouldn't have involved anything outlandish.
