just to note:
CIN-NYJ- Leavy- he has a 79% win % for home team
NE-BAL- Steratore- highest points per game in the league; low on penalties (good for scoring. bad for penalties bec BAL is one of the worst)
DAL-PHI- Hochuli- 36% of home teams win
ARI-GB- Green- middle of the pack. happy its not one who calls a ton because of GB aggressive D
There is obviously more to a game than a ref, but Good luck!
what site has all the nfl referee data?
This is just amazing, it really fells like the refs are throwing this game or Cincy. There have been multiple penalties that just look like BS against the Jets. Good work noting that the Cincy ref overwhelmingly favors the home team, because it sure looks like it here.
Jets 20, bengals 10
Eagles 24, cowobys 21
Pates 27, ravens 20
Cardinals 34, packers 17
Love seeing the Eagles DVOA graph. As an Eagles fan, I do respect Dallas.....and I am tired of the "Dallas hasn't won a playoff game in 13 years talk. Philly did have many chances last week (at least in the first half), and I think this will be a high scoring game that the eagles somehow win.
I think the Jets will get a huge early lead, Bengals will come back, but too little too late
child please, as a new yorker i cant wait til the jets are off the back page of the newspaper until august
*facepalms* good lord bungles...
Is three commercial breaks in the first minute a record?
I haven't watched much bengals football, but does anyone have any insight as to why they moved away from a no-huddle offense?
Good l0rd, I've forgotten about Theismann doing games. I suppose this is the one game Gibbs can reasonably call--both offenses are probably right out of the 80s.
Joe Theismann is the announcer on Sky sports now. Man this brings back memories.
(after the Jets' delay of game on the wildcat)
Theismann: "Brad Smith is not used to locating the play clock on the field."
Other Guy: "Smith, who played quarterback for four years in college..."
I think this is going to quickly become a bloodbath in Cincinnati's favor.
Though Gibbs seems ok so far.
Also, apparently Wes Welker is having issues...
Loving this announcing team.
Apparently putting Brad Smith in at QB and running an option is "that wildcat."
The Bengals show us all why noone ever runs the option in the NFL.
Feely is punting because Weatherford is sick. Now I understand why the punts suck.
I think all the road teams will win this weekend.
So the Jets punter is "ill", so Jay Feely, the PK, is punting. Seems to be doing ok. PKs are obviously able to punt, so why waste a roster spot on a punter at all? I'm sure that spot can be used better on a WR, DB, LB, or QB. Does that extra 5-10 yards of punting average, if that would be the case at all, really worth a roster spot?
It's not just about punting, though. A kicker who punts is a kicker who's not spending time worrying about his primary job. It's like the long-snapper. It seems like a waste of a roster spot until you watch the snap sail over the punters head for the third time.
At least a long-snapper has to block, run, and make tackles. Long-snappers don't make the NFL based solely on their ability to snap a ball accurately 15 yards behind the line.
And how much thought has to go into punting? If a kicker practiced punting, I'm sure they would become at least decent at it. And it's not like kickers are overburdened with duties in practice. Just spend some time punting.
Yes an extra 5-10 yards a punt is absolutely worth a roster spot. A couple of those bottom barrel roster spots are for helping ST anyway...
If you have a kicker who can punt in a pinch and a punter who can kick in a pinch, then when one is injured you have a replacement. If you only have one guy for both jobs and he gets hurt, then it's nothing but two-point conversions and going for it on fourth down for you for the rest of the game.
. . . Put that way, more teams should have one guy for both jobs.
Nice shot of Damato Peko in full plumage. You know he's excited about Soundgarden getting back together.
And the Bengals waste their 2nd challenge.
Looks like Thomas Jones' knee is really bothering him.
The Bengals are about to be out of challenges in the first quarter. Sure looked like a catch to me.
Awful awful use of challenges.
Why on Earth would Lewis challenge that? It was a catch but even if it wasn't it's still only 15 yards at midfield. And now the Bengals are out of challenges the rest of the game, which could potentially be huge later. Incredibly stupid.
Marvin Lewis blows both challenges on obvious calls in the first quarter. Wow.
Braylon Edwards amuses me.
Why am I not surprised Braylon Edwards dropped a sure touchdown?
Way to step up for the playoffs Braylon.
How on earth is that a 'good challenge,' Theissman? How?
I like how he said it was a good challenge then spent 5 minutes discussing in detail why it was not a good challenge.
Honestly, though, why on EARTH would you challenge that? I guess if you win you get the ball back, but for chrissakes it's the 1st quarter and it's not like they're in danger of getting buried early.
Did you see his vaunted punting abilities? I'd probably do the exact opposite of whatever he thought was right.
And Braylon Edwards has shown for this game I see.
Ah, good ole braylon, always good for one jaw-dropping drop.
I was hoping the catch would be overturned just to show up that showboating official on the sideline.
That official did look a bit like someone doing a move from a bad musical.
Was that even a drop by Bray-Bray? He just kind limply stuck on hand out a bit. "Meh, I don't really want this touchdown."
If dropping a ball would hurt, Edwards would be dead.
It's the Madden FB fake HB toss for the Jets TD.
Here it worked.
First time ever that the AI is smarter than the real life counterparts?! Whoa!
Ugly outside contain... unbelievable.
That play works pretty well for me in Madden personally.
I only run HB counters. I'll try the fake someday.
Ugh, I hate it when people don't play realistically in Madden. :-)
I think all the plays work fine for the most part, save for sweeps. They can still be big plays occasionally though. I do agree counters work the best.
I've never got the hang of dual analogue sticks, so ever since they brought in the passing cone I've just run every down, from a variety of exciting formations. FB fake HB toss is a terrific play in the right situation - ie short yardage, where FB dive would be a realistic call. Don't try it on second and long.
The vision cone has been gone for a couple years now. Maybe give it another shot - along with the slowed gameplay in '10 it's a lot easier to get the passing game going. Deep ball's still pathetically broken though, and tons of routes don't work right (curls etc) since throwing before the WR comes outt've his break turns it into a streak.
It works decently well for me in NCAA. I don't play Madden so I can't speak for it there, but it's good in college when I have a back with decent speed.
Nice play, nicer fake. 10 people running the play as if it was a run to the right, the HB runs it left.
Too easy, there.
For all the crap Sanchez gets, he does do some things really well, like fakes and play action passes.
and keller with the egregious block-in-the-back, followed by jt praising him while the slow-motion shows the uncalled penalty. fun for people who backed the bengals.
Oh come on!
The kicker will be perfectly fine tomorrow.
Don't like the illegal contact call. Palmer is looking really jittery so far. Even his completions are off target.
I don't know if he ever really came back from his injury...
Didn't he mess up his elbow last year and told he needed Tommy John surgery but decided against it?
I'd like a side by side comparison on a slant route, for example. His velocity looks to be down 10-15% to the naked eye, to me.
Men are more ready to repay an injury than a benefit because gratitude is a burden and revenge a pleasure.
Piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick! By who else?
Revis is a stud, and Palmer looks awful so far.
he "broke inside" on it.
Men are more ready to repay an injury than a benefit because gratitude is a burden and revenge a pleasure.
Could it be Palmer's thumb? Or a more common choke job?
Woohoo!~ Sweet play.
My thoughts as I find my wife has scheduled dinner out with some of her friends on the first Saturday of playoff football:
"@#$@$!!! woman needs to ask me first stupid dinner don't wanna go grumble grumble".
My thoughts as I hear Joe Theismann's voice.
"I love my wife, thanks for dinner, let's run away from the TV."
How do you end up behind a computer?
This. It was crazy how fast my playoff enthusiasm deflated when I saw the announcing team.
Awful tackling by the Bengals there. No real attempt to stop Keller.
Are these announcers even watching this game?
I'm betting palmer is really missing Housh right now.
The Bengals need to end the half down by no more than 7, a small victory.
Another illegal contact on Revis. Who'd he get shoved by this time?
He uses his hands a fair amount. He just doesn't do it egregiously. Would be nice to see what he's actually being called for though.
Edit: seems he got away with one in the end zone in that montage. That was well past 5 yards.
You may well be right, but the first one they called on him should've been going the other way - he was pushed by Caldwell.
Yeah, I thought that was the case when I saw how open Caldwell got on that route. Didn't see the foul as it happened or on replay and was confused by the call.
I'm not familiar with commentators...
Either have an annoying voice, and be informative, or have a normal voice and be tolerable. Don't have an annoying voice and say stupid things. Who is that?
Annoying voice = Joe Gibbs.
Stupid things = there's three of them.
I kind of like gibbs.
Thanks CBS, they just showed them. I was talking about Gibbs.
"Can't have turnovers"
No shit, sorry coach, we were doing it on purpose.
Gibbs joking about not understanding the 46. My god. It's not like he coached against a division rival that used it all the time or anything.
Are NFL punters going to be the next dodo?
Hope so. They're overrated.
Although the Koenen experiment didn't go well, I can't imagine that there aren't kickers who can do punting and kick off duties.
It was the other way around. Koenen is a punter who ventured into kicking. We are now talking about kickers picking up punting.
Bengals run up the middle to end the half instead of taking a knee, and Caldwell gets hurt.
Joe Gibbs telling Theismann not to speak. I'm liking him better, now.
I'm impressed with Sanchez this first half. Missed a couple of throws but he's played very well when he's had to throw it considering his inexperience.
If you ask me, he's doing his best Joe Flacco at the moment, which makes sense given his coach....
And that's all that anyone is asking for at this point. He's doing a good job.
So far I've heard Rashad 'Gentry', Quan 'Crosby' and Darrelle 'Reeves'. These broadcasters are supposed to be professionals?
is that JOE THEISMAN's music I'm hearing?
"WILDCAT UNDER CENTER" IS A CONTRADICTION IN TERMS!!! STFU!!!
I don't understand the angst. Who cares?
He's done it about 10 times. Its annoying. I hate the jets and I'm taking it out on the announcers.
Everyone knows what he means, not a big deal if you ask me. I'd complain about all the stupid analysis or butchering of names before complaining about not saying the exact variation of a certain formation one team is running. But, to each his own...
Did he really just say that a 20-30 yard route "is a lot of running for a receiving to do"?
He did indeed.
That is officially 2 awful PI calls against Revis. Both were closer to offensive PI than defensive.
I like the Bengals in this game, but that long PI was bullshit.
It was indeed.
When did Carson Palmer become . . . Well, I can't think of a prominent QB who was both weak-armed and inaccurate.
Orton was, but not Grossman or Cutler.
I know it's been commented on above, but Sanchez has been quite good when called upon today, against a top-notch secondary. It does look like the 2004 Roethlesberger model for success, but he's been very effective at it.
Is Shon Greene pretty good or is it just the Jets line/Bengals run defense?
Man, a lot of poor timeout usage today.
Sure, Rex Ryan is a little crazy, but this Jets team does kind of look like a tough out right now. They should be able to control the game against the Colts like the Dolphins did (I know they lost, but still)
I hope they will control the game against the Chargers :-)
yeah, me too. Didn't mean to suggest the Pats were a given. And the Bengals had shown they can run on the Jets before this touchdown.
Assuming they play the Colts, of course. I don't think it's a given that the Patriots will beat the Ravens.
It helps that the Bengals offense seems tailor-made for the Jets D to handle- they don't have a big-time TE, only one good WR, no deep threat, and weren't smart enough to pound the ball when it was close. They're playing extremely well today though, and you get the feeling that as long as they aren't in spots where they have to throw, their offense will be okay.
And the Bengals running game plays much better today than what can be expected from either SD or Indy.
I actually disagree. I think the best way to beat a Rex Ryan D is to spread it out. Go into 3 and 4 receiver sets with some quick outs to neutralize the pass rush. It would seem that injuries to Caldwell and Coles are making this strategy tough. A healthy Coles on, say, Jim Leonard is advantage Bengals. Then, after moving the chains a few times this way, run up the middle through the Kris-Jenkins-sized-hole in the D-line.
The Bengals don't have the horses to spread it out and be effective. It also isn't helping that Palmer is either hurt or choking. They've ran the ball decently well but seemed IMO to give up on it too early.
Everet timme thay sey "momentum" I take anuther shott
gmmmwhhaaa ghe ghe haha!
Bill's preview comment about Palmer not picking up blitzes was spot on.
Also, the new McDonald's Big-Mac Wrap looks disgusting. I'll probably eat one anyway.
Wow!!! This one just got a little bit more exciting!
Well, this suddenly makes things interesting.
Oow nice play.
I didn't think this was going to be close again, yet it is.
Rooting for the Jets though.
Oh well there goes my pleas for him to change his name to Chad O'fer-Cinco
Nice audible by Palmer. Corner didn't get into the C gap off the crack block and Benson was off to the races.
I wanted to write 3-4 minutes ago that there is still a lot left of this game...
I was indifferent before the game, and am now rooting for the Jets. I like Ryan, and I'm liking what I'm seeing from Sanchez.
Lateral it! Lateral it!
Whoa! Mark Sanchez blows a mean snot rocket!
Loved to do that near cheerleaders and see their disgusted faces.
I don't see the Bengals score 2 more times in 6 minutes.
Agree with the FG.
Feely deserves a game ball
You can say that again!
Is this four-down territory?! Down 10 with less than five minutes to play?! Yes, you dumb asshole! This is four-down territory.
I can't believe Theismann would even ask if it's 4-down territory. You'd have to be crazier than Al Davis to punt here.
...so I said to her, "not it's not, that gatorade shower is a tradition".
Is Joe Gibbs sleeping? What the heck were those noises?
even if Theismann meant is as a rhetorical question, then just STATE that it's 4 down territory.
Then continue the discussion if the entire game of football should be 4 down territory. Making the punter go the way of the dodo. (hat tip to hippoes)
Another terrible illegal contact call, this one on a 3rd & 10 incompletion.
You have no idea what illegal contact is.
Followed by a bad late hit call, where the hit and the footfall out of bounds happened at the same time.
I think that one was pretty legit. The late hit seemed really, really ticky-tack to me though.
It looked like Cosby was hitting Coleman, not the other way around.
Late hits out of bounds are probably the most overcalled penalty. Any other time when a player becomes unhittable the defense has a buffer zone where they won't be flagged for hitting him (a QB after he throws it, a player who's been tackled to the ground, a RB going into the end zone), but with a player at the sideline it's instantaneous - you're expected to pull up as he's approaching the sideline.
Here, let me call the WAAAAMBULANCE for you.
I can't believe how bad Palmer has looked. Like half his passes have been overthrows.
And another BS flag for the Bengals, that's like 4. They certainly don't deserve to win this game.
Carson Palmer + receivers dropping passes + Revis on defense = outs, slants, hitches and 2nd and 10s.
Unbelievable. Is it a preseason game for the Bengals? As if Palmer has never been on the field with his receivers.
Shayne Graham epic fail.
more killer missed field goals this year than i can ever remember
Killer missed field goals by Kris Brown are a big part of the reason the Bengals are playing the Jets not the Texans. Given how the regular season edition of that one went, they might not have enjoyed it much more than this.
Yeah, Houston could easily have gone 12-4 or 13-3 this year. Baltimore was really hurt by their kicker, too
13-3 would have required an awful lot of breaks, but certainly 10 or 11 wins wouldn't have involved anything outlandish.
So, that's most definitely Jets win. On to Dallas-Philly.
That look on coach Lewis' face was epic.
"But you, it was, you were, how, huh?!"
I can't stand the Jets, or any of the Ryans, but thank goodness I won't have to watch the Bengals next week. What a giant egg. I feel for Benson, the rest..bleh.
how impressive this Jets win is, and Sanchez is pretty good, but come on, why talk about him?
He threw it only 15 times, he's not the key factor here. Talk about the running back, the defence, the kicker/punter, about Revis and what he does to a secondary...
really quick 3 and out
Bengals, AFC North Champions play better than that.
I'm surprised Cincy went all pass-wacky the last few possessions. The run was working fairly well for them.
So if the Pats win tomorrow, and the Jets win in Indianapolis, will all the noise about the Colts front office insulting his own fans, and history, go away?
This was awfully sloppy for a playoff game. I hope the other three are tighter.
Ryan: "Didn't imagine giving up 170 yards rushing"
Yeah, but you won because you shut down the passing game. It's a hint.
This win should make FO happy. If Cin went to the suberbowl, Aaron might have just quit.
Could someone please tell me what died and landed on Bob Costas's head?
New game. Rules:
1: Any time they say "first play off win in 13 years" take a shot.
2: First to call an ambulance loses.
3: Anyone who played the "momentum" game (that's you Paul A) can only enter competition with medical supervision.
I'll play. I don't drink, though. Can I substitute Buffalo wings?
A 'shot' could be anything, if you still apply Rule 2, your good to go.
Well, I finished all my Buffalo wings before halftime.
I guess I'll go put the kids to bed.
An evening like this makes me wish I wasn't a teetotaler
Who's forcing you?
Lack of any drinks in the house. I might overdose on tea.
Another time it sucks to be in Afghanistan.
that and to be Plaxico Burress...
Who's the singing blond.
I like her clothes so much I'd take it off of her.
Isn't that Faith Hill bit the main reason why the rest of the world hates America?
No the reason the rest of the world would hate America is GW Bush, but that's a no go topic.
You folks are also responsible for Garth Brooks, too, you know. And 'this is Our Country!'
Aaaaaaaand from the worst commentators ever to some of the best.
Al Michaels is just very good. I like Chris too.
I don't expect earth shattering comments, because I understand that the average viewer is the most important one... but these guys are good.
Don't like Fox' obsession with the cowboys though. They're pretty bad. They haven't had a play off win.... oh man I'm doing it myself.
I'm going to have a hard time adjusting to competent announcers. I was just getting into the groove with Gibbs.
"You should make an effort to catch the ball..."
Is Tanier on suicide watch yet?
If he isn't, he's a better man than I.
Can you imagine the conversation between W and Emmitt Smith? Hoo boy.
I imagine it sounds like the Hamburgler talking to Mushmouth.
I was trying to reply to the IRC comment to express my surprise that the spam filter hadn't been adjusted to prevent it, but by the time I hit "reply", it had been deleted.
Always a disappointment when your heroes reveal their flaws.
It really is about the stupidest thing ever for a growing upstart company. They have a bunch of their customers who want to chat in real-time. Customers. Fans of theirs.
Can't have that! Prevent it, as best you can!
Well. Eventually, people learn. Some slower than others.
If there's a demand, don't try to kill it but jump into it and provide it for yourself.
So I said to her "yeah of course you were doing 120 but those weren't kilometres"
Anytime the crowd goes "whoooooooow!" and someone with a 90 or 50 number is at screen, you know a hit happened.
If he started that hit while he was catching it, I'd understand it.
But now, the guy started the hit AFTER the ball bounced off his hands, that was stupid.
Although... if someone goes over the middle early in the game, a safety wants to let it know that he's there. Cost you 15 yards.
LMAO, the Beagles can't get out of their own way. Someone please call mercy on this.
Men are more ready to repay an injury than a benefit because gratitude is a burden and revenge a pleasure.
It's odd that the NFL is showing reruns. Everybody must be on vacation or something.
It's just after new years. They'll have new episodes next week.
Wow that TV shot of Dubya high fiving Jerry Jones was priceless. I'm pretty sure a litter of puppies just died somewhere.
Dubya has probably caused more puppies to be killed than Vick has.
Hochuli and crew have lost control.
34 to 14
Ever since I know the game (since '99) I somehow hate the cryboys. What a bunch of snot. That owner. What a piece of shiit.
I won't begrudge them a SB win if they earn it, but I'm really going to be pissed if people start overrating Jerral as a GM based on a season of exceptional injury luck.
does mcnabb QB another game for philly?
captcha is campaign gerhart, sounds very WW2
Looked to me like he had no offensive line the first half. No excuse for his second half play.
Stay classy, Cowboys PA operator.
PI calls in both games were out of control.
5/6 memorable PI penalties were caused by the offense pushing off, all were called on the D.
