Todays predictions: 2 more home team victories.
Minnesota will beat the Cowboys in a massive Favregasm.
The Jets played a nearly perfect game last week to beat the Bengals. I would love to see them pull that off again this week, but I don't think they can. The Chargers will score enough points to put pressure on Sanchez to actually play a little QB, and he'll struggle. Chargers win.

I felt more confident in a Vikings team which was bettr thatn the opponent on the line of scrimmage, but terribly deficient at qb, than I do in a Vikings team which may have a slight edge at qb, or at worst is even at that position, but is likely to get beat on the line of scrimmage.
If the Vikings had managed to beat the Eagles last year, and the game was closer than many might imagine, I really liked their chances against the Cardinals, because they would not have had to honor defending the run at all. This year, even with really good qb play, the match-ups, in my opinion are not nearly as favorable.
Usually in this round, at least one road team pulls off the upset, and we're down to two games for it to happen... and I'm scared to death it will happen to the Chargers!! Well, look at the bright side - if the Cowboys win in this round, that just means it will be all the more humiliating if they get beaten badly in their rematch with the Saints in the NFC Championship game.
I predict a reversion to normal division round results, where the home team wins 3 out of 4. Both logic and emotion are in favor of liking the Chargers and Cowboys this week (and the Colts and Saints yesterday). Or rather liking the Chargers (as a long-time San Diego resident) and hating the Vikings (as a long-time Packers fan).

Anyone else think the Vikings' play calling was odd after the first and goal play? On second, the third that was negated by the delay call, and third, they ran very similar plays and none seemed to work all that well? I'd have liked to see one throw into the end zone somewhere on a goal-to-go sequence. Perhaps they'd seen something on film, but it sure looked unimaginative to me.
good hold by the dallas defense after the fumble. Minnesota, once it got inside the 10, never tried to attack the middle, everything was outside and wrapped up.
he got away with it but it was a stupid, stupid decision. Even if that throw to Harvin had been complete, the likely reward is nothing. He forced his defense to have to make some more plays. Yes, they did. But it doesn't excuse it.
wasn't there a game a few weeks ago where the vikes offense looked abysmal for 2-3 quarters then came alive when he who can't be names started calling the plays he wanted?

I think Childress senses his team has gotten lucky to this point. Boy is he on edge. This is more than just playoff nerves when you are complaining about an obvious man down field call.
penalty fest, vikings get false start, no call on harvin, inelligble downfield on great punt, then false start on next punt... vikings backed up to end zone.
The Redskins might be, but it's not like Folk got cut because he was awesome. If he were, he'd still be drawing a paycheck. If I got fired for sucking, I don't think I'd take much glee because my replacement was almost as bad as I was.
ohh well look who's a mature adult. do you want an award?
if I got fired, I would totally feel a sense of schadenfreude to watch my successor crash and burn too. perhaps that indicates that you weren't the problem in the first place.

Somebody should really let Wade Phillips know that the reason why Suisham was a free agent was because he was worse than at least 31 other kickers. Going for 40+ yard field goals when you're down by 14 with a kicker who is no better than 32nd in the league is not an advisable strategy. And yet, he looks so surprised when he misses.
I think you're being unfair. Allen does get a number of run tackles especially in backside pursuit. At least in interviews he claims his first priority is to stop the run.
He's not as one dimensional as Randle, for example.
by young curmudgeon (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 4:14pm
Announcing follies! They're making a big deal of the Vikings accepting or not accepting the penalty...that was on the Vikings! In most football games, the team that is victimized by the penalty gets to decide whether or not to accept it.
by Anger...rising (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 4:15pm
Uh, Joe? The Vikings didn't decide to accept the penalty against themselves; they committed it and the Cowboys are the ones who accepted. On behalf of sports fans everywhere, I hope your dad's burning in hell for foisting you upon us.
Commentators keep saying that the penalty was declined by vikings (the running into kicker), then saying it was a bad call since they were further back. Thta penalty was on minnesota, Dallas option.
Meanwhile Vikings get another 3 and out. They've done nothing the second half so far. Favre missed a wide open Harvin on first down.
At least all the Dallas haters can go back to their holes and shut up until the next time the Cowboys have a modicum of success (perhaps in a bit of irony, the haters always emerge the same time that the bandwagon fans come out)...
Based on available evidence of the 2009-2010 playoffs, the only competitive game appears to be the one played late on Sunday.
High hopes for Jets/Chargers.
For someone widely considered a bust, Kennedy has turned into a competent backup, and I expect him to increasingly take over for Pat Williams as he gets older.
He had more carries than receptions over his collegiate career (194 to 133) and the ratio increased each season (1.2:1, 1.4:1, 1.8:1.) So he was always more a running back than a receiver, though he was our best at both positions (there's a reason he was the #1 overall prospect coming out of high school.)
So you've completely judged me from one comment on a message board. Okay then.
Brooking was a class act in Atlanta. But the stuff he pulled after the Cowboys/Falcons game and his little temper tantrum in this one are embarrassing for a veteran like him.
Once you say that it's OK to run up the score on one particular team (and not just in general) then you've shown your colors and so obviously little things like "I'm sorry-- oh wait, no I'm not" is par for the course.
I never said running up the score against anyone wasn't OK. I said that running up the score against the Cowboys is extra-OK.
I don't know where all this anger is coming from on your part. You sound like a sore loser, which makes you a hypocrite for giving me crap for being biased.
by Packerpalooza (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 5:32pm
I think both Favre and Childress said a lot about themselves as professionals with that last score. I could see a field goal. The class thing to do would be to take a knee.
Cue the "if you don't want them to score play better" crowd.
Dallas had gone for it twice on 4th down and used all of their timeouts on defense after the last Rice TD that made it 27-3. Dallas easily could have punted with 4:00 or so left if they wanted to raise the white flag. They chose not to. So why do the Vikings have to limit their playbook in this situation?
I applaud not giving up, especially when things look dark for you.
But running up the score, by definition is only applied to the team that's ahead. Fighting it is courage. Giving up like they did yesterday is not.
I agree. It's in fact sort of lame to go for a TD on 4th and whatever when you're up by a 20+ in the waning minutes of the 4th. After all, there's no risk (even a pick-6 gives you the ball back with a double digit lead) and the reward is just stat-padding and, well, running up the score. I thought it was classless when New England did it a few years ago, and I think it was classless now.
if cowobys cant handle having score run up on them, then maybe quit football now (whole temam retire tomororw, especially that bum Brooking)) and coach tee ball. everyone gets a tropy at end of year and everyone gets a hot dog after evey game
by Jim B. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 6:11pm
Cowboys and Jerry Jones deserve everything they get, and more. If you can't handle being scored on, learn to freaking play defense. What the hell happened to the best 3-4 front in the league?
To conclude: Vikings win the game handily but get a C-minus for sportsmanship. Cowboys win the game but get an A+ for not running up the score. I'm sure that Jerry Jones is very happy.
by Anger...rising (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 6:49pm
So "football move" has now been replaced by the equally-nebulous "lapsed time"? Can we not just agree that "possession + two feet down = completion" and be done with it?
I guess when you have no running game to speak of, it's really hard to move the ball against an excellent pass defense. Who knew that could come back to haunt the Chargers.
Better than Deion does not equate to best in NFL history. Not sure who's the best. Here's a few others to consider: Herb Adderley, Mel Blount, Mike Haynes, and Darrell Green.
by an old ref (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 9:29pm
If I might add a few more:
Lester Hayes (bonus points for looking like Swamp Thing with the stickum)
Louis Wright
Emmett Thomas (you want physical play, check here)
Willie Brown
Champ Bailey (declining now, but awesome in his prime)
Namdi Asomugha (not his fault his organization sucks)
Night Train Lane (going back a long way, but hey)
afraid would be a big word, but that Jets defense is pretty good.
I don't believe that their offense is going to get them past the Colts, and the Colts will beat them, but the point remains that that D is pretty good.
by John (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 8:41pm
Having said that, I'd much rather play the Chargers, because if the Colts beat the Jets instead, everyone will dismiss them as pretenders.
Every playoff success the Colts have had, with the exception of the classic AFCC, has been preceded by MSM laudatory comments toward the other team, followed by post-mortem "Well, obviously that team stunk."
by Packerpalooza (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 8:21pm
Has there ever been a kicker who lost his job because in the postseason he was awful? Meaning that during the season he was fine but come the playoffs just missed kick after kick?
Of course the ironic thing with Brien was his second miss against Pitt was because Edwards settled for a longer field goal instead of trying to get closer, right after the Jets beat SD because the chargers did the same thing with Kaeding's attempt in OT.
by Jon Silverberg (not verified) :: Mon, 01/18/2010 - 12:22am
The way I remember it, Brien wasn't "awful in the post-season..." It was his kick that beat San Diego the week before in the Jets' first round win (when Kaeding first endeared himself to Jets fans...a Hall of Fame kicker against 31 teams, a bum when it counts against the J-E-T-S)...Brien missed kicks in the game at Heinz Field, the Jets lost, and that was enough for Jets management (has anyone but Jeff Reed ever kicked well in the January wind/cold at Heinz Field?)...so they went and drafted Nugent...20-20 hindsight: they'd have been better off putting their collective arm around Brien's shoulders, telling him "you're our guy, forget about the Pittsburgh game..." Nugent, while fairly accurate inside 45 in his first few years, had a weak leg (not enough touchbacks) and eventually started missing...a misfire as a high draft choice (Jets had no first round pick that year; they picked Nugent with their 2nd rounder, the 47th pick...the next 32 picks included pro bowlers Nick Collins, Vincent Jackson, Frank Gore and Justin Tuck...)...but hindsight is always 20-20...
by Packerpalooza (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 8:32pm
That's unfair given that the kicker has gacked twice plus the turnovers. The Chargers have moved the ball and given up one big play to the Jets offense.
I thought Jackson was in. They scoed anyway, but that cost them around 20 seconds. Then again, were it not for that "roughing the flag" penalty they'd have scored two plays earlier.
Assuming the Jets can seal the deal, I still expect the Colts to easily hold court and face the Saints.
But can you imagine the storyline if we had the Jets vs. Favre?
If you kickoff and you make the stop and get it back on a punt, you're satisfied with a field goal. If you onside kick and they get it, they kick a field goal and you have to score a TD.
Chargers stupid for not taking timeout before 2 minute warning. Yes, both ways you stop the clock twice. But one way second stop is at 2:00, other way second stop is past 2:00.
by Inmate Number 4... :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 10:47pm
One reason not to do it: it opens up the playbook for the opponent. If the opponent is starting a play at 2:02, they know that the clock will stop following the play whether it's a run or pass, inside or outside. If the opponent is starting the same play after the two-minute warning, they have to make sure they call a play that will keep the clock moving (inside run), which makes it easier to defend. That predictability could be worth a couple seconds, seeing as the Jets needed a first down to win.
"Will these playoffs finally put to rest the "momentum" myth? Please?"
This will never happen since people are too swayed by recent events. Heck within 2 weeks Dallas went from a team everyone expected to lose in Week 17 to Philly to suddenly the NFC favorite
If the Jets get the first down, Norv should have told his defense to let greene (or wheover it is) score. And Ryan should tell his guy to go down after the first down.
Interesting that how both the talented Chargers and Cowboys destructed with sloppy play and penalties. I'd say it's an example of how coaching matters. Norv is good gameplanner and playcaller, but his teams tend to be undisciplined.
Going for it was a good call, I think. 4th-and-a-foot tries are really, really hard to stop, and even if it had been stopped, Rivers didn't have great field position.
by young curmudgeon (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 9:33pm
I think my over/under for getting totally sick of hearing about Rex Ryan is Tuesday. Yeah, yeah, I know, he's "refreshing," etc. Believe me, if you live anywhere near the NY metro area, his deification is going to be unbearable this week. Credit where due, but it's going to get out of hand very quickly.
If it's a Jets-Vikings "big game" (I'm not licensed by the NFL to use the other phrase), the hype machine is liable to explode. I'll be spending the party eating, talking to my friends, and maybe even (in desperation) watching the commercials. Sigh...
I listened to part of the game on radio. Warren Moon needs to learn the players' names. He called Jacob Hester "Josh Hester" and he called Kassim Osgood "Kareem Osgood."
Ever see "Super Trooper" where the guys pull over some poor dude and one of them tries to say "meow" nine times while giving someone a speeding ticket? I think football announcers have a similar game. They all put money in a pool, and then spend the season butchering as many names as possible. After the season ends, they get together and see who has done the worst job and he takes the pot. Special awards are given for particularly hilarious butchering.
by MainerRaider (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 9:57pm
Um, WTF? Seriously, the Chargers blew it again? Do we need an advanced metric to explain this ludicrous loss to a team that went 9-7 and made the playoffs on a tiebreaker? Granted, with all of that snow on the field, it was hard to do much on offense; plus all of that crowd noise kept messing with Diego's o-line, hence all of the false starts. I guess what really did the Chargers in was that thick fog that obscured the goal posts.
It's hard to say. There is some correlation between above-average NORC and high MORC, but it's in different directions - sometimes the NORC spikes first, sometimes the MORC does. I wouldn't feel right calling it statistically significant.
I was once an advocate for taking the timeout just before the two minute warning...but if you do that (and it is less than 5 seconds over 2:00 on the clock), then that opens up the possibility that the offense can pass, since the clock is guaranteed to stop at the end of the play regardless.
I'm just saying. There is an advantage to waiting.
Before folks talk about how the Jets lucked into another victory (and no doubt it's lucky when a kicker misses 2 makeable kicks), note that the Chargers had 3 fumbles and recovered all 3.
by Jim B. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/17/2010 - 10:56pm
Now, if the Jets can upset the Colts next week, the s*** is REALLY going to hit the fan for Polian and Caldwell. I mean, talk about egg on your face if they lose to the Jets, the same team they pulled their starters against in the game that broke their undefeated streak.
by Ryan Carney (not verified) :: Mon, 01/18/2010 - 9:00pm
Jim B. There are several variables that contribute to San Diego's lack of success in the postseason. It seems as though the timimg has just never been quite right for them. In list form:
1. LT aging as Rivers Developed, if Rivers hit his prime on a Friday morning, LT got old that afternoon.
2. Colts, Pats, and Steelers. Too good for too long, plain and simple, there's only one trophy per year.
3. Merriman on and off the roids. Went from transcendant havoc-wreaker to roster gobbling, slow pursuing, no lateral quickness for his position liability. This was a huge blow to the defense. (17 sacks in 06, 12.5 in '07, 4 in '09) Imagine if Dallas lost DeMarcus Ware...same situation only Merriman is still there in body.
4. Nate Kaeding. This isn't the first time he's done this. They should've seen it coming. Playoff demons aren't excercised by making regular season kicks.
5. 2008 was a good situaion for them...a bit more mature, ready for some get back from New England, who proved in the Super Bowl they were ripe for a loss. Problem was LT was never fit to play and left in the first quarter, leaving his helmet and visor on the whole game presumably because he was visibly mad/upset after the 2007 debacle (LT HATES the Pats) and Rivers was playing on one leg (torn ACL, pretty ballsy). Tomlinson was never the same, and...
6. They wasted a year of Rivers, Gates, and Jackson's prime by relying on said old Tomlinson. You can say it's only one year, but this is football, windows are short.
7. Norv Turner replacing Marty. I'm not sure marty even needed to be replaced. Losing tight games to the teams they lost to are no firable offense, Replacing Schottenheimer with Turner is like going to the doctor and hearing "I cured your flu, but I gave you herpes, sorry".
8. (and most importantly) As this team evolves, the first thing we need to realize is that Rivers is 28. If we judged Favre, Elway, Montana, Young, Manning, and Kelly on their careers up to age 28, you'd be looking at a bunch of guys a lot like Rivers now, most actually less accomplished. Gates, Jackson, Cromartie, and many other components of that team aren't going anywhere. The best is yet to come.

Favre desperately wants a championship and isn't going to let the likes of Brad childress get in the way.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
he got away with it but it was a stupid, stupid decision. Even if that throw to Harvin had been complete, the likely reward is nothing. He forced his defense to have to make some more plays. Yes, they did. But it doesn't excuse it.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
wasn't there a game a few weeks ago where the vikes offense looked abysmal for 2-3 quarters then came alive when he who can't be names started calling the plays he wanted?

sheez blatant hold on Harvin, grabbing jersey even, no call. results in 3 and out.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I think Childress senses his team has gotten lucky to this point. Boy is he on edge. This is more than just playoff nerves when you are complaining about an obvious man down field call.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I think its more the non-call on the Harvin hold....
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
penalty fest, vikings get false start, no call on harvin, inelligble downfield on great punt, then false start on next punt... vikings backed up to end zone.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
The Cowboys need to pass only when necessary or on play action. No empty backfield. That has caused all the protection problems.

Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
The Redskins might be, but it's not like Folk got cut because he was awesome. If he were, he'd still be drawing a paycheck. If I got fired for sucking, I don't think I'd take much glee because my replacement was almost as bad as I was.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion

Interesting. I thought those were painted on.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Somebody should really let Wade Phillips know that the reason why Suisham was a free agent was because he was worse than at least 31 other kickers. Going for 40+ yard field goals when you're down by 14 with a kicker who is no better than 32nd in the league is not an advisable strategy. And yet, he looks so surprised when he misses.

Great punt by Kluwe.
this is a critical point of the game for Dallas.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Barber is running. Jones is running a much better game, but this is their 'power' back... strange strategy.
Jones is 8/46
Barber is 8/14
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Edwards is the DE of real value. If he's hurt that is huge.
I am convinced that Allen is now so obssessed with sacks the rest of his game has all but vanished.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I think you're being unfair. Allen does get a number of run tackles especially in backside pursuit. At least in interviews he claims his first priority is to stop the run.
He's not as one dimensional as Randle, for example.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
He did earlier in the year. Then he had those big games against GB and lost all sense of responsibility.
He has been swept off the point multiple times the past month as he swims to get upfield.

Roughing the punter!!! Farwell!!!!'
oh, running into. yeah on replay right call. foot came down on him then he fell.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
how is that penalty still not removed?
i mean, its the stupid punters fault when he comes down on a player on the ground
i get if he totally lays him out or snaps his plant leg but cmon...he didnt even initiate the contact
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Announcing follies! They're making a big deal of the Vikings accepting or not accepting the penalty...that was on the Vikings! In most football games, the team that is victimized by the penalty gets to decide whether or not to accept it.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
yes but most football games don't have favre
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Uh, Joe? The Vikings didn't decide to accept the penalty against themselves; they committed it and the Cowboys are the ones who accepted. On behalf of sports fans everywhere, I hope your dad's burning in hell for foisting you upon us.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Commentators keep saying that the penalty was declined by vikings (the running into kicker), then saying it was a bad call since they were further back. Thta penalty was on minnesota, Dallas option.
Meanwhile Vikings get another 3 and out. They've done nothing the second half so far. Favre missed a wide open Harvin on first down.
and commentators finally realize their mistake.

The Cowboys line was doing fine in the first half. It was only after the game started to get away from them in the second half that things broke down.
This game really came down to a few plays, namely Romo's inexplicable fumbles early.

Harvin played running back in college didn't he?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion

Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
He had more carries than receptions over his collegiate career (194 to 133) and the ratio increased each season (1.2:1, 1.4:1, 1.8:1.) So he was always more a running back than a receiver, though he was our best at both positions (there's a reason he was the #1 overall prospect coming out of high school.)

Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I don't like running up the score.
Then again, it was vs the dallas "even the best team in being overrated" cowboys.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I just don't think there's running up the score in pro football. Maybe they wanted that play on film for New Orleans.
Dallas was still making every effort to win the game up to that point on offense. Why can't the Vikings do the same?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
So how many times does a team go for the TD in that situation? Please, do tell....
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
That's irrelevant.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I applaud not giving up, especially when things look dark for you.
But running up the score, by definition is only applied to the team that's ahead. Fighting it is courage. Giving up like they did yesterday is not.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
C'mon, MN could have kicked the field goal. LIke is done any number of times by any number of teams.
These responses are just sad..............
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
They could have done any number of things. You apparently have a problem with the choice that they DID make. I don't.
I didn't realize a difference of opinion was a "sad response."
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Childres called for the kneedown, but Favre audibled out of it.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I hope Chargers 27-20.

Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Yeah, but in the NFL, you can have hot dogs during the game!
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Cowboys should be able to handle it. But that doesn't make it a more classy play by Favre & Chilly.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
not classy but why does it have to be?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Cowboys and Jerry Jones deserve everything they get, and more. If you can't handle being scored on, learn to freaking play defense. What the hell happened to the best 3-4 front in the league?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Sportsmanship is good form regardless of opponents.
They're not under any obligation to do so, I'd personally like them more if they did though, and I know many other people feel similarly.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
To conclude: Vikings win the game handily but get a C-minus for sportsmanship. Cowboys win the game but get an A+ for not running up the score. I'm sure that Jerry Jones is very happy.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
err... Cowboys lose the game....
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion

Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Revis is the best cornerback to ever play the game.
He's young and barring injury, he's only going to get better in the next five years.

Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
"Revis is the best cornerback to ever play the game."
Jim I would like to introduce you to Deion Sanders
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
"Revis is the best cornerback to ever play the game."
Sweet mercy, is that the very definiton of hyperbole.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Dude... he's 25 years old and he's the best cornerback of his generation so far. He's only going to get better in the next five years.
In all honesty, he's better than Deion already. He's a shutdown corner just like Deion but unlike Deion he's physical and tackles extremely well.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
So was Namdi a year ago. I wonder who it will be next year.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Better than Deion does not equate to best in NFL history. Not sure who's the best. Here's a few others to consider: Herb Adderley, Mel Blount, Mike Haynes, and Darrell Green.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
If I might add a few more:
Lester Hayes (bonus points for looking like Swamp Thing with the stickum)
Louis Wright
Emmett Thomas (you want physical play, check here)
Willie Brown
Champ Bailey (declining now, but awesome in his prime)
Namdi Asomugha (not his fault his organization sucks)
Night Train Lane (going back a long way, but hey)
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Dick LeBeau.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
As a Colts fan who has admittedly only seen snippets of the game thus far, let me say: I am not remotely afraid of either of these teams.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
What about the....um... awesome running of Sproles & Tomlinson? Or the amazing passing attack of Sanchez??? Ah, I got nothin.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
afraid would be a big word, but that Jets defense is pretty good.
I don't believe that their offense is going to get them past the Colts, and the Colts will beat them, but the point remains that that D is pretty good.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
It's admittedly not bad, but Manning & Wayne weren't having any real problems with Revis before they were yanked.
Baltimore had a pretty darned nice defense too, good enough to make the Colts look tepid, but not good enough to win.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Having said that, I'd much rather play the Chargers, because if the Colts beat the Jets instead, everyone will dismiss them as pretenders.
Every playoff success the Colts have had, with the exception of the classic AFCC, has been preceded by MSM laudatory comments toward the other team, followed by post-mortem "Well, obviously that team stunk."
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Has there ever been a kicker who lost his job because in the postseason he was awful? Meaning that during the season he was fine but come the playoffs just missed kick after kick?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I don't recall the exact timing of his dismissal, but Vanderjagt would seem to qualify.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
we'll see tomorrow
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
See "Brien, Doug" (NY Jets 2004 Kicker). Actually got cut right after the Jets drafted Mike Nugent in April 2005.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Of course the ironic thing with Brien was his second miss against Pitt was because Edwards settled for a longer field goal instead of trying to get closer, right after the Jets beat SD because the chargers did the same thing with Kaeding's attempt in OT.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion

Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
That's unfair given that the kicker has gacked twice plus the turnovers. The Chargers have moved the ball and given up one big play to the Jets offense.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I ask again........
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Chargers could set a precedent right here.

Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion

Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I don't know if they have to make that call, but I'm blaming Jackson there, he should never do that.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Will these playoffs finally put to rest the "momentum" myth? Please?
You'd think the Cardinals would have done it last year.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
It comes down to the special teams.
Can Kaeding honk on onsides kick?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Never mind. Scifres to kick the onsides.
Jets recover anyway.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I thought Jackson was in. They scoed anyway, but that cost them around 20 seconds. Then again, were it not for that "roughing the flag" penalty they'd have scored two plays earlier.
Assuming the Jets can seal the deal, I still expect the Colts to easily hold court and face the Saints.
But can you imagine the storyline if we had the Jets vs. Favre?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Of course you onside kick. A first down wins the game for the Jets, be it at the 20 or the 40.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
If you kickoff and you make the stop and get it back on a punt, you're satisfied with a field goal. If you onside kick and they get it, they kick a field goal and you have to score a TD.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I don't think you try a 50 yard field goal in this situation. Well, they make it close enough that its about a 47 yarder.
Well it lets the Jets go for it, which I guess they wouldn't back on their own 29. so there is that.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Chargers stupid for not taking timeout before 2 minute warning. Yes, both ways you stop the clock twice. But one way second stop is at 2:00, other way second stop is past 2:00.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I agree 100% and don't see why people don't do this more. If you're in time trouble, stop the clock just before the 2 minute warning!!
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
One reason not to do it: it opens up the playbook for the opponent. If the opponent is starting a play at 2:02, they know that the clock will stop following the play whether it's a run or pass, inside or outside. If the opponent is starting the same play after the two-minute warning, they have to make sure they call a play that will keep the clock moving (inside run), which makes it easier to defend. That predictability could be worth a couple seconds, seeing as the Jets needed a first down to win.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Is giving Shanchez the chance to throw the ball really a bad choice for San Deigo?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
"Will these playoffs finally put to rest the "momentum" myth? Please?"
This will never happen since people are too swayed by recent events. Heck within 2 weeks Dallas went from a team everyone expected to lose in Week 17 to Philly to suddenly the NFC favorite
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
trust your line and go for it.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
If the Jets get the first down, Norv should have told his defense to let greene (or wheover it is) score. And Ryan should tell his guy to go down after the first down.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Interesting that how both the talented Chargers and Cowboys destructed with sloppy play and penalties. I'd say it's an example of how coaching matters. Norv is good gameplanner and playcaller, but his teams tend to be undisciplined.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I was saying the same thing when New England blew it against Baltimore.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I agree. The Chargers killed themselves with penalties, and that is a direct result of coaching.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Going for it was a good call, I think. 4th-and-a-foot tries are really, really hard to stop, and even if it had been stopped, Rivers didn't have great field position.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
with kaedings kicking, did anyone fear giving the chargers the ball back?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Greenberg is going to be absolutely giddy tomorrow on Mike & Mike....

Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
'Roid rage?
Despite his talent, it's hard to like Rivers.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Kaeding's night = proof kicking accuracy is random?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I'm not sure any one game is proof of anything, but I do agree that, on average, it is pretty random.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I'd think it'd validate the importance of clutch kickers rather than emphasise randomness.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I think my over/under for getting totally sick of hearing about Rex Ryan is Tuesday. Yeah, yeah, I know, he's "refreshing," etc. Believe me, if you live anywhere near the NY metro area, his deification is going to be unbearable this week. Credit where due, but it's going to get out of hand very quickly.
If it's a Jets-Vikings "big game" (I'm not licensed by the NFL to use the other phrase), the hype machine is liable to explode. I'll be spending the party eating, talking to my friends, and maybe even (in desperation) watching the commercials. Sigh...
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Tuesday of week two of the regular season, you mean? Sounds about right to me.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I listened to part of the game on radio. Warren Moon needs to learn the players' names. He called Jacob Hester "Josh Hester" and he called Kassim Osgood "Kareem Osgood."
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Ever see "Super Trooper" where the guys pull over some poor dude and one of them tries to say "meow" nine times while giving someone a speeding ticket? I think football announcers have a similar game. They all put money in a pool, and then spend the season butchering as many names as possible. After the season ends, they get together and see who has done the worst job and he takes the pot. Special awards are given for particularly hilarious butchering.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
The Chargers are held back once again by their high NORC, or Norvs Over Replacement Coaching. It's tragic, really.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Is that related at all to the MORC that they suffered from before Norv arrived?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
It's hard to say. There is some correlation between above-average NORC and high MORC, but it's in different directions - sometimes the NORC spikes first, sometimes the MORC does. I wouldn't feel right calling it statistically significant.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
I was once an advocate for taking the timeout just before the two minute warning...but if you do that (and it is less than 5 seconds over 2:00 on the clock), then that opens up the possibility that the offense can pass, since the clock is guaranteed to stop at the end of the play regardless.
I'm just saying. There is an advantage to waiting.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
That, and you have no recourse against a blown call on the play leading into the two-minute warning.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Before folks talk about how the Jets lucked into another victory (and no doubt it's lucky when a kicker misses 2 makeable kicks), note that the Chargers had 3 fumbles and recovered all 3.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
San Diego Chargers: Never has a team with so much done so little.
Or, San Diego Chargers: Most talented team in the past decade to never make it to the Super Bowl.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
San Deigo, or Dallas?
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
Now, if the Jets can upset the Colts next week, the s*** is REALLY going to hit the fan for Polian and Caldwell. I mean, talk about egg on your face if they lose to the Jets, the same team they pulled their starters against in the game that broke their undefeated streak.
I mean, wow, talk about pressure to win.
Re: Sunday Divisional Round Discussion
