I am watching. Some comments:
1. The Texans defense is awful. But we already knew that.
2. The Eagles defense looks pretty bad too.
3. I think Michael Vick is going to get hurt again before this season is over. He is taking way too many shots.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

Samuel being out has a bad trickle down effect on the Eagles secondary, it all falls to pieces without him or Hobbs because there's not enough talent/speed/experience to cover for all the mistakes the backups are making.
I also think Parker being out at LDE is a pretty bad too because he was getting good pressure before the injury and flushing QBs to Cole and the DTs, or vice versa.

Sure enough, the Eagles proceed to ignore his advice and pass their way down the field.

More to the point, has he watched any Texans tape? They're not very good at stopping the run, it's true, but compared to their complete and total inability to cover anyone at all their run defense looks like the 2000 Ravens.

The Wafkes were never going to score fewer than 30 points in this game, but the Houston offence is really very good and will keep them in games even when their defence is getting shredded. I wouldn't be backing many teams to beat them by more than a touchdown.

Houston was second in the league in offensive DOA, so holding them to 24 points is a good effort, especially missing 3 starters on defense. Philly actually converted in the red zone for once... all 4 of their touchdowns were from inside the 5.
Vick is taking shots AND he's not getting protection from the refs. He got head slapped (just as bad as Cole slapped Manning a few weeks ago) and he got hit below the waist in the pocket and neither were called.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
by MJK :: Fri, 12/03/2010 - 12:31pm
I wonder if Manning gets calls Vick doesn't get, just because of their relative reputations...
Or possibly because the Colts wear white and the Eagles were a dark, almost black, color.
Seriously, I was just reading an interesting study that showed, over the last 30 years or so in football, basketball, and hockey, that teams that wear dark colors, (especially black) have more "aggression" type fouls (personal fouls or DPI in football, for example) called against them and fewer called for them, than teams that wear white or bright colors, and the results are statistically significant. And two teams that have switched from one uniform style to the other in that time period (I can't remember which ones...) showed a corresponding jump or decrease in their fouls when they switched.
The theory is that people tend to view people wearing black or near black as being more rough and aggressive than people wearing white or bright colors, and hence the ref's perception of a given hit is colored (pun intended) by the colors the players are wearing.

The NFL would be vastly improved if Raiderjoe was allowed to name all the teams. "Wafkes" is one of the best names ever and the "Clots," albeit a bit more obvious, is good, too. There are probably others I don't remember. I enjoyed Easterbrook's "Flaming Thumbtacks," but Raiderjoe has moved not just to another level, but to another dimension. I can't wait for the crowd at Chicky and Pete's to chant "W...A...F...K...E...S.............Wafkes!"

Call me nuts but does anyone else see the KC vs. Denver a trap game for the Chiefs? KC is coming off a road win against Seattle while the Broncos are coming off a pretty bad loss against the Rams. Dewayne Bowe will draw Champ Bailey (who by the way is looking for tape for teams to sign him this offseason) allowing the rest of the team to focus on the KC running game. Finally, who does Kansas City play next week...THE SAN DIEGO CHARGERS.

The Chiefs are very reliable at home, are well-coached, and McDaniels is positively beleaguered by now. I would favor the KC Patriots over the Denver Patriots in this one. The Chiefs aren't good enough to be overlooking anybody.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

For the record Denver's DVOA Rank against #1 WRs is 18, Seattle is 17(we all know how last week went) and Bowe caught 13 of 18 passes for 186 yards and 2 TDs in Denver so it doesn't look like Bailey is going to be able to limit Bowe any better than other teams have.
There are 5 Chiefs player changes that could have a significant impact this week. Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers is listed as questionable (hamstring) but some KC media say he will be out. That is a major loss. On the positive side RB Dexter McCluster, FS Kendrick Lewis and FS Jon McGraw will be back. McCluster is a key factor in keep everyone but Champ Bailey out of the box. Lewis is our starting FS and McGraw is his backup. They are much better than Donald Washington so that should help limit the damage Orton can do. The fifth player change is the 12th man in the stands which always helps (that and increased oxygen at 889 feet above sea level).
Denver lists the following players as OUT - S Brian Dawkins, CB Andrew Goodman, S Darcel McBath, WR Demaryius Thomas.
As for it being a trap I don't think so. Last year Charles pulled himself from the game with 259 yards rushing. This year I think the Chiefs would like nothing better than to have Charles set a new NFL rushing record against Denver. At least that's my interpretation of the handshake incident.

With the exception of two games I think Denver's pass defense has been OK. The game Bowe had against Denver the game was pretty much in hand early on.
Game #1 vs. Jax Mike Sims-Walker not a factor
Game #2 vs. Sea Deion Branch 4 catches 31 yds
Game #3 vs. Ind Wayne 4 catches 65 yds no TDS
Game #4 vs. Ten Nate Washington 4 catches 42 yds (Before Britt went off)
Game #5 vs. Bal A. Boldin 1 catch 8 yds
Game #6 vs. NYJ Edwards 4 catches 46 yds 1 TD (32 yds on the TD)
Game #7 vs. Oak Murphy 2 catches 29 yds. (Raiders ran for like 4,000 yds)
Game #8 vs. SF Crabtree 3 catches 53 yds 1TD
Game #9 vs. KC Bowe 13 catches 186 yds 2 TD (A lot made in garbage time)
Game #10 vs. SD Crayton 3 catches 105 yds 1 TD
Game #11 vs. St.L Amendola 4 catches 41 yds.

Is DVOA against #1 receivers really a useful stat?
Most of the effect of having a true shut down corner should be to prevent the #1 WR from being targeted.
Wouldn't we actually want to look at a counting stat (like opponent #1 WR DYAR) to get an idea of how good a team is at shutting down the opponent's top wideout?

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

Bengals have 4th and inches near midfield, decide to punt. John Lynch says it's a good idea because the Saints are so explosive in the 1st quarter (they highlighted that they have the best scoring differential in the 1st quarter). You know John, holding on to the ball by converting 4th and inches is an even better way to prevent them from scoring.
And after about 3 plays the Saints are at that part of the field anyway.

Tavaris Jackson 2010 has discovered the secret to Brett Favre 2009 -- chuck it up for Sidney Rice! He makes a mediocre throw to Rice who is double covered at the 1-yard line, but Rice makes an absolutely mind-blowing effort for the ball and (after a review) comes up with the touchdown. (Of course, he pushed McKelvin out of the way on the play, and should have been called for OPI... maybe he learned some moves from Moss.)

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

IIRC, a big deal was made of the fact that a few other quarterbacks had had the same college coach (Jeff Tedford? I don't follow college football, so that might not even be a person...), were picked high, and failed to pan out. I think Kyle Boller was one, and I believe there were one or two others.
ETA: I was actually right about the coach's name. According to Wikipedia, Tedford coached the following QBs during their college careers, all of whom were chosen in the 1st round:
-Trent Dilfer
-David Carr
-Akili Smith
-Joey Harrington
-Kyle Boller
... so I can understand why that might cause people to have some hesitations about Rodgers.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

I don't remember hearing that about Smith at the time. I have since. I don't know if it was for some reason not a concern at draft time, if I just didn't hear it, or if I've just forgotten it in the intervening five years. The one thing I can remember is that he was supposed to be extremely intelligent--that may have at least helped mitigate any concern pros had about the system.
I also hate college football, so I have no idea beyond what I can remember hearing then.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

I remember hearing concerns that Smith hadn't really played under center at all, though I also remembered what you mentioned -- he was considered to be very smart. (I think he got his bachelor's in something like 5 semesters...)
And Human Spider, Tedford had a long history of making QBs look very good in college, only for them to not live up to their draft status in the pros. (See the list above.) As far as I know, there wasn't as much of a "book" on Urban Meyer QBs at the time.

Dear Fox,
When pointing out a defensive front, it's okay to use the teleprompter to CIRCLE things. When you use a makeshift magnifying glass, it's noticeable and annoying. Please don't do it again. Ever.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
by aRX (not verified) :: Sun, 12/05/2010 - 6:54pm
But thats my point; they go on and on about player safety, but same contact, same speed, same impact, same kind of results...and thats just good clean football!?
Also, if the NFL doesn't think a runner can be defenseless, even when he hasn't fully turned upfield yet and can't react in time to a defender coming right at his head, then the whole 'safety' angle is BS.
110
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
by Pat Swinnegan :: Sun, 12/05/2010 - 7:04pm
Well it's not possible to isolate precisely every player who is ever going to be 'defenseless' in any sense, but you can at least give some conditions (throwing/catching) under which guys clearly are. I guess the thinking is that the guys who aren't in the middle of throwing or passing and are just running with the ball can and will lower their heads as contact is made, and then you open up that whole can of worms, who was the one that initiated the helmet-to-helmet, etc.
116
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
by FireOmarTomlin :: Sun, 12/05/2010 - 7:28pm
However, the league has SAID that it's concerned about player safety. Concussions/trauma/etc aren't minimized because a player is supposedly not "defenseless".
Hell, the worst effects come to linemen from the accumulated lifetime of little traumas that nobody notices or cares about as they butt heads on almost every single play.
It's pure hand-waving PR to move towards the 18 game season. "We care... ! We care...!" (That, and to protect their most $ valuable golden boys at "skill" positions)
Either hits to the head, particularly h2h hits, are dangerous, or they aren't. Remove them from the game, or don't. No middle ground for only enforcing them for certain players/situations.
Disgusting.

I'm fine with that; the fewer god-awful backup QBs I have to watch in a season, the better.
Either hits to the head, particularly h2h hits, are dangerous, or they aren't. Remove them from the game, or don't. No middle ground for only enforcing them for certain players/situations.
So if you can't solve the problem completely, then don't bother doing what you can to mitigate it?

So, if you're really good at RB or OL, and want to play to make a living, you should be forced to expose yourself to vastly greater risk of permanent brain trauma--- because the league can't enforce prevention--- but if you're good at QB or WR, you shouldn't?

Sure, I guess. (Although how about "play to make million of dollars" instead?) Do you have a better idea?
but if you're good at QB or WR, you shouldn't?
I'm not sure how to interpret "should" in this situation. I guess it's unfair that QBs and WRs often find themselves in situations where they can unambiguously be judged "defenseless" when guys on the line or running the ball do not.
Andy Reid was pissed this week that Vick was taking so many shots in the game. "C'mon NFL, he's a QB!" was the gist of his argument, I believe. Well, guess what? QB or not, Vick isn't defenseless on those plays, so the league isn't going to hear it.

Frankly, as a neutral observer, I was wondering why they were even bothering to ask Mike Pereira about it. That said, I didn't notice that the ball had come out until I saw the replay, so heads up by Morris to challenge. (And to have saved the challenge on that Winslow play at the sideline.)

I'll never understand why teams give up the strategic advantage of the defense not knowing what you are going to do on third and one. The Bucs line up in their standard short yardage fail package and the the coach does some CYA by not going for it again on 4th and inches.

You're going to have to get me to believe Jackson contributed on defense before I think he (or Favre on the bench) was the big factor in the Vikings game. Which block do you mean? The one where he prevents Polamalu from making the sack by grabbing and pulling his facemask? If that's the one you mean, then no, it wasn't a beautiful block. It was an egregious foul that for some reason the officials missed or ignored.

Beautiful play fake by McGahee and Joe Cool to set up the Boldin touchdown catch. As I type this, both teams fight on an extra point after a false start penalty.

Anyone happen to notice how many the Steelers rushed on this one? I thought I counted five, but they didn't get *anywhere* near flacco, and the play fake didn't seem any more convincing than most of the ravens' similar plays in the past. Just curious if I was miscounting or something.

For one thing, I'm not sure, but don't you have to actually be tacked by the horse collar in order for the call to be made? I saw someone close to it, but he let go before Kemo went down.
Secondly, from the (admittedly limited) replays they showed, he was actually gripping the back of the jersey, which as far as I recall is not a horse collar. Although granted, refs have called it as such before.

I was under the impression that a horse collar was defined as gripping underneath the pads directly behind the neck. But since the rule book isn't published, I may very well be wrong. Either way, I maintain that he didn't bring him down by it, hence no penalty.

I keep getting the feeling that the day is approaching where a player is going to die on the field and that will be the last day I watch the NFL. I hope that the hit on Miller gives James Harrison some f***ing perspective on why the NFL keeps fining him.
245
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
by 'nonymous (not verified) :: Mon, 12/06/2010 - 1:07am
Yes, those hits can be serious. I hope the NFL finds some combination of rules/technology to make the risk smaller and smaller. But Harrison's name should be the first one you think of in regards to fines, not in regards to h2h hits. He has not been fined for a helmet-to-helmet hit this season!
His hit on Josh Cribbs was h2h, but ruled completely legal. His hit on Massaquoi was scary, but was forearm to helmet (a penalty by the rules, but it would have been forearm to chest if Massaquoi were not stumbling. What was the intent, whose fault is it? These are not easy questions.) His hit on Brees was helmet to back. His hit on Fitzgerald was forehead to chest. (Both of these QB hits ended with Harrison wrapping up; the fine was for point of initial contact.) Meanwhile, linemen collide head to head every play. Running backs routinely lower their helmets to run through defenders. Can you really regard the current rules and fines as a sane or fair response?

James Harrison said after the game that he thought the hit on Miller was clean. You can say what you want about Harrison, but at least he is consistent. You definitely can't say that about the NFL's position on these hits, which has been inconsistent to the point of absurdity.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

The NFL officiating has been horrendous this year. Geez where to start...ok let's go with the Bucs & Falcons and the INT at the end of the game. Even the Fox Replay Official said it would be close but would overturn it because it appeared (on one frame) the ball tip might have hit the ground so CB "Did not complete the process." This is a guy who used to be an NFL Referee and has done a nice job Fox in reviewing some really close plays this year. The problem is the NFL rules DO NOT STATE that the receivers "need to complete the process!" He used the same language when he correctly predicted (when refs reviewed Megatrons catch against the Bears in Week #1) that Calvin Johnson did not catch the ball because he did not complete the process. The NFL Refs during the season interpet the rules that do not exist in the language that is stated. The NFL will continue to put their collective heads in the sand when it comes to officiating but it's becoming a HUGE intergrity factor in believing games or fixed or favortism is being shown.

NYJ should have gone for it on 4th. Having a bad kicker, in cold weather, over 50 yards seems like a bad combination. Plus you give NE very good field position if he misses. The best option is probably to go for it and then 2nd best option is a punt.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

Challenging a spot that isn't blatantly wrong is a bad move- they get reversed 1 in 100 times. Agree with you that challenging the TD would have been bad. There was nothing on the replay that would have made the ref change his mind, no matter which way they called it on the field.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

If they had called him out of bounds, it would have been reversed. The hand came down in bounds before any part of the body touched out of bounds. Good decision not to challenge.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
by Rocco :: Mon, 12/06/2010 - 11:08pm
The hand doesn't count. It's the wrist/forearm that counts. I think that came down in bounds first, but had they ruled it no catch, I'm not sure it was clear enough.
273
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
by RichC (not verified) :: Tue, 12/07/2010 - 12:40am
Incorrect.
The hand does not cause the player to be DOWN, it does establish possession in bounds though. Its no different than a foot in this regard.
Its only when discussing whether a player is down by contact thats the hand doesn't count.
"A player is in possession when he is in firm grip and control of the ball inbounds. To gain possession of a loose ball that has been caught, intercepted or recovered, a player must have complete control of the ball and have both feet completely on the ground inbounds or any other part of his body, other than his hands, on the ground inbounds. If the player loses the ball while simultaneously touching both feet or any other part of his body to the ground or if there is any doubt that the acts were simultaneous, there is no possession. This rule applies to the field of play and in the end zone."
Fleming was citing the rulebook in that paragraph.

Honestly, the current offense looks more promising than 2007 ... not in a sense that it looks as video-game-gimmicky-like, but in a sense that it is harder to shut down completely. The 2007 team choked a couple of times (come on, I am a die-hard Patriots fan, and when thinking about the end of the Ravens game, I still think the TD [I think Gaffney] was a bad call ... I also think they still would have beaten the Ravens, but it should not have been for this play). But they weren't unstoppable.
This short passing game won them super bowls, the 2007 offense only won them bloated stats.
Stats are for losers.
Credit to Bill Belichick. After loosing any game that mattered last season, they won any game that mattered this year. Schedule has been brutal, and they beat any playoff team from last season (with the Packers still open).

Is anyone watching the thursday nighter or is this just too much field action in one week?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I'm watching. Debating whether to mute the commentary or not.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I was sitting here in London flicking between this game and the second Ashes test match between Australia and England (cricket) if that's what you were referring to? What do you mean no????
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
3 down at tea on day four, looking good.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I didn't believe my eyes that a Texans DB intercepted a pass from a QB not named Rusty.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Joe Theismann is telling us that Philly cannot succeed unless they start rushing the ball more. Has he watched any Eagles tape at all?
Sure enough, the Eagles proceed to ignore his advice and pass their way down the field.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
More to the point, has he watched any Texans tape? They're not very good at stopping the run, it's true, but compared to their complete and total inability to cover anyone at all their run defense looks like the 2000 Ravens.

Did Celek got Helmet-to-Helmet on Pollard? The replay wasn't clear.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Either the Eagles are the most undisciplined team in the NFL or Philadelphians have reason to be paranoid.

WAFKES - potato waffles. Good with sour cream or maple syrup!

Bigger questoin is what does wesolych swiat mean?
Season's Greetings. Marvel at the power of the intergoogle!!!!
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
The biggest question is: how did a Polish phrase remain orthographically accurate when typed by Raiderjoe?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
The Wafkes were never going to score fewer than 30 points in this game, but the Houston offence is really very good and will keep them in games even when their defence is getting shredded. I wouldn't be backing many teams to beat them by more than a touchdown.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Hit this oen right on ehad. Worked out formula before ever lookgin at line. Numbers said if Eagles favored by 9.5 or less, take Eagles. Turned out line was 8 so had to take Eafles.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Houston was second in the league in offensive DOA, so holding them to 24 points is a good effort, especially missing 3 starters on defense. Philly actually converted in the red zone for once... all 4 of their touchdowns were from inside the 5.
Vick is taking shots AND he's not getting protection from the refs. He got head slapped (just as bad as Cole slapped Manning a few weeks ago) and he got hit below the waist in the pocket and neither were called.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Except that the Colts wear blue half the season when they're at home and the Eagles wear white half the season when they're away?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
But the Eagles were wearing their dark green home unis last night. I don't remember for sure, but weren't the Colts wearing their white uniforms when Manning got the roughing call?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Yes, Clots were wearing white jerssyes that game vs Phailapedia but had blue helemts.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Schaub got hit in the head in that game much like Vick and the aforementioned Manning hit without a call. He doesn't have the right last name to get such a call yet.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
The NFL would be vastly improved if Raiderjoe was allowed to name all the teams. "Wafkes" is one of the best names ever and the "Clots," albeit a bit more obvious, is good, too. There are probably others I don't remember. I enjoyed Easterbrook's "Flaming Thumbtacks," but Raiderjoe has moved not just to another level, but to another dimension. I can't wait for the crowd at Chicky and Pete's to chant "W...A...F...K...E...S.............Wafkes!"

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Call me nuts but does anyone else see the KC vs. Denver a trap game for the Chiefs? KC is coming off a road win against Seattle while the Broncos are coming off a pretty bad loss against the Rams. Dewayne Bowe will draw Champ Bailey (who by the way is looking for tape for teams to sign him this offseason) allowing the rest of the team to focus on the KC running game. Finally, who does Kansas City play next week...THE SAN DIEGO CHARGERS.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
The Chiefs are very reliable at home, are well-coached, and McDaniels is positively beleaguered by now. I would favor the KC Patriots over the Denver Patriots in this one. The Chiefs aren't good enough to be overlooking anybody.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Don't you know. Trap games don't exist. So said AAron on the BS report.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Lets just hope they aren't 28-0 down after the first quarter this time.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
With the exception of two games I think Denver's pass defense has been OK. The game Bowe had against Denver the game was pretty much in hand early on.
Game #1 vs. Jax Mike Sims-Walker not a factor
Game #2 vs. Sea Deion Branch 4 catches 31 yds
Game #3 vs. Ind Wayne 4 catches 65 yds no TDS
Game #4 vs. Ten Nate Washington 4 catches 42 yds (Before Britt went off)
Game #5 vs. Bal A. Boldin 1 catch 8 yds
Game #6 vs. NYJ Edwards 4 catches 46 yds 1 TD (32 yds on the TD)
Game #7 vs. Oak Murphy 2 catches 29 yds. (Raiders ran for like 4,000 yds)
Game #8 vs. SF Crabtree 3 catches 53 yds 1TD
Game #9 vs. KC Bowe 13 catches 186 yds 2 TD (A lot made in garbage time)
Game #10 vs. SD Crayton 3 catches 105 yds 1 TD
Game #11 vs. St.L Amendola 4 catches 41 yds.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
And now we've got an absolutely atrocious running into the punter penalty that moves the Saints into FG territory. The Week 13 Oscar goes to Thomas Morstead.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
In Buffalo we're getting a our first look at Tavaris Jackson this season. At least he knows to throw deep on a free play, hitting Sidney Rice for 50 yards or so. Three plays later, he overthrows a wide-open Berrian on 3rd down.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
What happened to ol' stubbly?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
So far all they've said is it's a shoulder injury and he's questionable to return. He got hit and landed on his shoulder.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
He got driven to the turf on the Vikings' first series. They're saying shoulder injury, questionable... But after watching the replay, I'd say there's no way he's coming back.

KC put in Vrabel and the DT from last week in goal to go and actually went to neither of them.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
And now, on 4th and 12 from the NO 30, the Bengals go for it. And make it. So 12 yards is go for it distance but inches is not. Why am I even watching this game?

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Tavaris Jackson 2010 has discovered the secret to Brett Favre 2009 -- chuck it up for Sidney Rice! He makes a mediocre throw to Rice who is double covered at the 1-yard line, but Rice makes an absolutely mind-blowing effort for the ball and (after a review) comes up with the touchdown. (Of course, he pushed McKelvin out of the way on the play, and should have been called for OPI... maybe he learned some moves from Moss.)

Most of his catches have come against Philip Buchanon in what looked like man coverage.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Sacks against Washington should only count as half. Their line is really bad.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Stephon Heyer has been in at LT for much of the game, and he's been getting beaten like a red-headed stepchild by whichever NYG lineman happens to be across from him. For some reason, FOX thinks it would be better to have their sideline "reporter" goof off with caution tape behind the end zone rather than, say, give some explanation as to why the Redskins' starting left tackle has left the game. Or even mention that their starting left tackle has left the game.

Unusual shot in WAS-NYG: Shanahan drops a challenge flag in front of a ref after a somewhat close call, and an assistant jumps in front of Shanahan to pick it up. I've never seen a head coach vetoed like that before!
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Unsurprisingly enough, Brandon Jacobs scores his 2nd rushing touchdown. The Giants have scored their touchdowns by running the ball down the Redskins throats.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Question: Was Aaron Rodgers so unimpressive during his final year to the NFL Draft that everyone thought Alex Smith and Jason Campbell were better options? There's seriously nothing I can find to justify this.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I remember there being concern about his college offense and his durability. I really don't remember anything more specific than "can he stay healthy in the NFL?" and "he didn't play in an NFL offense."
However, Jason Campbell was picked after him.
Smith didn't play in an NFL offense, either. Or was this during the time when the Urban Meyer offensive system didn't have a bad rep?

20-18 to New Orleans in the fourth quarter after a Cedric Benson touchdown, Cincinatti kick the extra point instead of attempting the two point conversation.
Why?
Re: New Orleans - Cincinatti
I'm assuming because the last time they tried to go for two, they wound up failing. Miserably. Or you could chalk it up to bad coaching.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Uh... I think helmet-to-helmet hits are illegal only on a defenseless player, i.e. one in the process of throwing or catching a pass.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
But thats my point; they go on and on about player safety, but same contact, same speed, same impact, same kind of results...and thats just good clean football!?
Also, if the NFL doesn't think a runner can be defenseless, even when he hasn't fully turned upfield yet and can't react in time to a defender coming right at his head, then the whole 'safety' angle is BS.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Well it's not possible to isolate precisely every player who is ever going to be 'defenseless' in any sense, but you can at least give some conditions (throwing/catching) under which guys clearly are. I guess the thinking is that the guys who aren't in the middle of throwing or passing and are just running with the ball can and will lower their heads as contact is made, and then you open up that whole can of worms, who was the one that initiated the helmet-to-helmet, etc.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Disgusting.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
(That, and to protect their most $ valuable golden boys at "skill" positions)
I'm fine with that; the fewer god-awful backup QBs I have to watch in a season, the better.
Either hits to the head, particularly h2h hits, are dangerous, or they aren't. Remove them from the game, or don't. No middle ground for only enforcing them for certain players/situations.
So if you can't solve the problem completely, then don't bother doing what you can to mitigate it?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Yes! The creamsicles are back! I love the original Buc's uniform. They were especially awesome back when the defense was dominant. There's nothing better than an intimidating defense donned in wimpy colors. It's like you're constantly mocking the opponent that you're beating down. Fear the creamsicle!
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
This is a pretty good game. I haven't watched the Bucs in ages, but they look pretty good today.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, they're not as fun to watch as they were with Sapp/Brooks/Lynch but they're pretty competitive. It's hard to get used to them just having an ok defense though.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

The Manning face is back ladies and gentleman. I'm surprised the announcers are actually calling out Manning instead of just blaming his WRs.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Why? It was pretty clear on replay.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Seemed kinda ticky tack. It hit the ground and moved but it never truly slipped out. If that happened as he was going out of bounds I'd expect it to be overturned, but I was bit surprised to see it go our way in the middle of the field.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Frankly, as a neutral observer, I was wondering why they were even bothering to ask Mike Pereira about it. That said, I didn't notice that the ball had come out until I saw the replay, so heads up by Morris to challenge. (And to have saved the challenge on that Winslow play at the sideline.)
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I'll never understand why teams give up the strategic advantage of the defense not knowing what you are going to do on third and one. The Bucs line up in their standard short yardage fail package and the the coach does some CYA by not going for it again on 4th and inches.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Freeman seems like he'd be a beast on the sneak... do they run that much?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
They do occasionally but its the same type of play, everyone in tight and run it up the middle where the defense expects it. From what I've seen, it's not very effective.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread

Lynch totally caught that, Bucs fans.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
There's that short yardage fail lineup again.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I actually predicted the option when I saw Earnest alone back there. It worked so well against the Saints a few years ago. Fantastic play.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah... sorry about praising Raheem Morris for his lack of dumb challenges, by the way.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I'm not able to watch the game, but every pass Peyton has thrown here on this last drive that's been completed as gone to Reggie Wayne. Now I'm no coach, but wouldn't you triple-cover Wayne given how he's the one good receiver they have left and make Pierre Garcon beat you? Am I nuts?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Gerald Sensabaugh was hurt the play before (of course, all the Colts fans figured he was faking it) and I think it must have been chaos in the Dallas secondary after that. But yeah, it was pretty absurd.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
"Chaos in the Dallas secondary" seems to be the natural order of things for the Cowboys this year.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Well, Sensabaugh was back in for the first drive of overtime (we hear you, Colts fans) and the very first play was an incomplete pass intended for Wayne.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Gotta love the three man rush.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
The Raiders win in San Diego, and it was absolutely no fluke, (unlike the victory earlier in the season). A couple of early Chargers turnovers helped, but they hurried and hit Rivers all day, and ran all over them when they had the ball.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Damn! That first round draft choice just got less valuable.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
My thoughts exactly.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Another four INT game for Manning?!? Just... wow.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
So is Peter King still going have Manning on his MVP list tomorrow?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
He'll have Favre.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
You're going to have to get me to believe Jackson contributed on defense before I think he (or Favre on the bench) was the big factor in the Vikings game. He threw interceptions like a vintage Favre and threw a few more just up for grabs. To be fair, he's going to have to save a truckload of puppies or something before I become a Tarvaris Jackson fan based on having watched him in seasons past.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Was he still on the list last week?!?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Ahhh, he dropped Manning last week. My sincerest apologies to PK.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
In your defense, it was certainly plausible.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
And now Atlanta with the three man rush.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Wow, what a throw and catch on 4th down.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Incredible catch by Sammie Stroughter to keep hope alive, and thanks to the the Colts game ending I get to watch it in glorious HD.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Ouch. And an ugly throw to end the game.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Well, the throw was to the inside instead of the outside shoulder, but that was a really good break on the ball.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, usually that sort of interception isn't very impressive, but Grimes actually had to make a great play to get that one.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Grimey!
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Oh man, I don't think this gets overturned.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
That's a pick, not enough evidence to overturn even though it hit the ground after being juggled a bit. Bad roughness call though. The penalty was basically big guy hits little guy hard so we throw the flag.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
there was a clear frame where the ball tip was on the ground before his hip hit.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
We'll agree to disagree then.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
The hit wasn't very late, but it was very hard - if Freeman pulls up at all, the ref probably doesn't throw the flag.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
YOu are corretc. Was said before seaosn. Predicition before seaosn was Raiders win division
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Theoretically possible, but it could be hard... they've effectively got to win all four remaining games, since I don't think you can rely on the Chiefs being less than 10-6 by the end. Still, it could happen, especially if Manning face continues.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Over/Under for Big Ben foot mentions is at 48. I have the Over. what do you got?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Under. It's going to be the nose getting more mentions.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Well start cueing the refs call everything against the Steelers crowd. Ben was struck in the head on that sack. Should have been a personal foul, blow to the head penalty and nothing was called. Looked like it broke Ben's nose. I am at the point that if they could automate the refs, they should do it. The game is too fast for these guys.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Someone alert Doug Farrar: a Pistol sighting in PIT-BAL! It would appear that Al Michaels is unfamiliar with the Pistol, since he called it "a short shotgun formation" multiple times before Collinsworth elaborated that it's called the Pistol in the college ranks.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Possible name improvement: Sawed-off shotgun. Think we can start the trend?
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
It's certainly a more enjoyable name, but it's (ironically) probably too long to actually get used.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Pittsburgh punts on 4th and 1 from Baltimore's 40; TMQ will retroactively write "Game Over" in his notebook right now ... if Baltimore wins.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Beautiful block by Ray Rice on that 70ish yard pass to Boldin. At least from what I saw, as the cameras didn't care to show it.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
... and collinsworth subsequently shows it. Kudos on him.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Collinsworth can be a dick, but he's one of the few former skill player commentators that really seems to get blocking schemes.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Which block do you mean? The one where he prevents Polamalu from making the sack by grabbing and pulling his facemask? If that's the one you mean, then no, it wasn't a beautiful block. It was an egregious foul that for some reason the officials missed or ignored.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Beautiful play fake by McGahee and Joe Cool to set up the Boldin touchdown catch. As I type this, both teams fight on an extra point after a false start penalty.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Anyone happen to notice how many the Steelers rushed on this one? I thought I counted five, but they didn't get *anywhere* near flacco, and the play fake didn't seem any more convincing than most of the ravens' similar plays in the past. Just curious if I was miscounting or something.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Nice play by Flacco and Boldin on the TD. Double covered, but Flacco waved him back towards the middle of the end zone right before releasing the ball.

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
The second replay looked like he dragged the toe.
Also there's no way Moore made the 30-yard-line on that play that Harbaugh challenged, not that it ended up mattering.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
It looked like Moore was on top of other players, not the ground, so he wasn't down until he stopped advancing the ball. There's still a good chance that he didn't quite make it, but I think it's certainly plausible that he did.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I don't think they had enough evidence to overturn, certainly. But the original spot looked pretty generous.
Anyway, moot point. Hey look, another punt!

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
For one thing, I'm not sure, but don't you have to actually be tacked by the horse collar in order for the call to be made? I saw someone close to it, but he let go before Kemo went down.
Secondly, from the (admittedly limited) replays they showed, he was actually gripping the back of the jersey, which as far as I recall is not a horse collar. Although granted, refs have called it as such before.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Hand doesn't have to be inside the jersey to be a horsecollar.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I was under the impression that a horse collar was defined as gripping underneath the pads directly behind the neck. But since the rule book isn't published, I may very well be wrong. Either way, I maintain that he didn't bring him down by it, hence no penalty.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Rule 12, Section 2, artyicle 1
All plsayers are prohibited from:
(a) to (c) other things
(d) grabbing the insifde collar of the back of the shooulder pads or jersey, or the uinside collar of the side of shoulder pads or jersrey, and immeditaely pullinf down the runner. This does not apply to a rummer who is in the tackle bolx or to a quaryterback who is in thr pocket.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Thanks Raiderjoe. Since the runner was not immediately pulled down by the collar of the jersey, no penalty.

Now the "goodell fellators" are appalled that there was no penalty on that hit to Miller -- and so am I. (Cue shot of Harrison on the sideline, and we all know what he's thinking.) If the NFL doesn't impose a fine for that, I'll give Harrison a pass if he goes all The Rock on NFL headquarters.

Supposedly the NFL was going to call anything close. That's the story we heard on the Austin Collie hit, or when Ryan Clark went shoulder-to-back on a Raiders receiver and was flagged. The idea was "if in doubt, throw a flag". Which is fine. However the sound of that hit left no doubt.

I need better medication to keep my heart from stopping. I like flashbacks to the 2008 season with those types of games. I'd forgotten what they do to me.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I'm getting really sick of watching players laid out motionless on the field after their neck gets bent to some horrible angle. I keep getting the feeling that the day is approaching where a player is going to die on the field and that will be the last day I watch the NFL. I hope that the hit on Miller gives James Harrison some f***ing perspective on why the NFL keeps fining him.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Many, many NFL rules don't appear in the rulebook, but only in the refereeing guidelines.

Intentional grounding will be called when a passer, *facing an imminent loss of yardage due to pressure from the defense*, throws a forward pass without a realistic chance of completion.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
NYJ should have gone for it on 4th. Having a bad kicker, in cold weather, over 50 yards seems like a bad combination. Plus you give NE very good field position if he misses. The best option is probably to go for it and then 2nd best option is a punt.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I agree they should have gone for it, but punting there would be pretty pointless, unless they have a very good punter.

Amazing. Five bad calls for New England in first quarter. That's pretty amazing, even for them.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Morganja thinks that every patriots first down is a conspiracy. Amazing.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
No. I haven't watched any Patriot football in a long time because I can't stand the ludicrous officiating in their favor. I gave it one quarter and the same old crap. It's at the point where only very stupid people can't see the consistent bias. Most likely I won't watch any more Patriot games this year up to and including the Super Bowl that the NFL is so clearly giving them. That and a lockout could be the end of football for a lot of erstwhile fans.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
C'mon, Morganja, show me on Ron Jaworski where New England touched you.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
I really disagree with Tirico's challenge theory. Challenging a spot on 4th and 1 isn't a bad a challenge, and taking a big risk challenging a touchdown catch that won't be overturned is a bad challenge.
The hand doesn't count. It's the wrist/forearm that counts. I think that came down in bounds first, but had they ruled it no catch, I'm not sure it was clear enough.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
Incorrect.
The hand does not cause the player to be DOWN, it does establish possession in bounds though. Its no different than a foot in this regard.
Its only when discussing whether a player is down by contact thats the hand doesn't count.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=fleming/090923&sportCat=...

Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
The "2010 Offense is as good as 2007 Offense" argument is really looking good tonight.
Re: Week 13 Open Discussion Thread
