Their offensive line just stinks. They've already had a false start, and a totally blown assignment on a run play leading to a 5 yard loss. And Manning has been hurried on every dropback.

I wonder what the record is for lowest avg per rush in a game/season....they look like they want to set some records tonight.
Since 1960, the record (I think) is 2.79 by the 1994 New England Patriots. Indianapolis is at 3.40 so far this year. So it looks unlikely that they will make a run at the record.
However, to really make it a fair comparison, there needs to be an adjustment for era, since yards per carry has been increasing league-wide.

Terrible technique by Cortland Finnegan on that long completion to Wayne. Reggie just jogged past the attempted armbar. I understand Finnegan is one of the slightly better corners around but that's a mismatch one on one.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by RickD :: Fri, 12/10/2010 - 12:36am
Wow - Jeff Fisher really blew it with that last punt.
And yes, the failure to tackle Garcon was terrible, too.
Occurs to me that there was pretty flagrant DPI on the second-to-last play, not that it mattered, given that the Titans scored on the next play.
If the offense is down 9 points, and they need a TD plus an onside kick recovery, there is an incredible incentive for the defense to commit DPI, just to burn clock. Commit penalty, penalty, penalty, as long as the clock is burning, just to delay the TD. Sure it's bad sportsmanship, but hey, that's just another penalty!
Terrible game management at the end by the Titans.
If you don't think Chris Johnson can get 1 yard against the Colts on 4th down, why even coach this game? The Colts have the 27th best rush defense in the NFL.
But Jeff Fisher is going to escape blame because he did the conventional thing: punt. Even though there was less than five minutes on the clock, his team was down 6, and the other team had Peyton Manning at QB. Jeff Fisher should take at least as much flak as Belichick did last year when the Pats went for it on 4th and 2.
Finally, I'm guessing gamblers around the country who took the Colts and gave 3.5 points were screaming as the Titans covered the spread with 0:00 on the clock.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

The reasoning in the comment booth went as followed
"shouldn't you go for it?"
"Why time enough to punt"
"yeah but you're punting to Peyton Manning"
"so... they stopped them last drive."
So you're giving up 21+ points already, and IT IS PEYTON MANNING, you're going to punt.?
Ridiculous time management at the end too. Go for endzone 3 times, if not, field goal.
These passes for 5 yards; you'd better swat them down as a receiver to save clock. 3rd oldest starting QB in the league. Hasn't learned much.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by RickD :: Fri, 12/10/2010 - 1:00am
Yes, the booth commentary was cringe-worthy.
4th and 1!!!
But since they'd gotten a stop against the Colts on the previous drive, that was somehow more important than the fact that the Colts had moved the ball with ease most of the evening.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Dave :: Fri, 12/10/2010 - 1:47am
That logic was nowhere near as bad as them both arguing that they should've kicked the FG from the 14 then onside kicked it and hoped for a TD from their own 40 with less than :30 left. It was made even stupider by the fact that they kept talking about it for several plays afterward.
The Colt D should be embarrassed after that performance.

Can someone explain what these coaches are doing every week? We hear how they spend 14+ hours working every day yet hardly any are smart enough to manage a simple clock. Even if you ignore the ridiculous 4th Down Punt, the time management at the end was comical.
How can they waste the entire time trying for the TD and not even get a chance at the Onsides Kick? Heck, as soon as they are in decent field goal position (maybe 20 or 25 yard line or so) they should be kicking the fg. They could have had roughly 40 seconds and a Time Out left to attempt an Onsides Kick and go for the TD. Any Madden player or even anyone smart knows you need time to kick the onsides kick and run plays if you are forunate to recover it.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Dave :: Fri, 12/10/2010 - 1:49am
Are you kidding? You'd rather kick from inside the 20 and then try to score a TD after recovering a kick at your own 40?
Play for the TD when the TD is at least somewhat easy to obtain. The field is a lot shorter after a successful onside kick when all you need is a FG.
The error wasn't in the decision to try for a TD, it was in the plays they ran and the inexplicable decision to throw over the middle (and catch it) short of the goal line.
27
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Theo :: Fri, 12/10/2010 - 9:55am
Exactly.
Toss it into the endzone 3 times, not inbounds, not short and then kick. Then get the onside and hope a clown on a purple kangaroo will help you get the touchdown.
If you made the TD, getting into FG range will do.
Really, what the titans did, was the worst thing they could do.
24
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Q (not verified) :: Fri, 12/10/2010 - 5:19am
When time gets low you are better off going for the FG right away to save time. In that situation the Defense will be covering the sidelines and Endzone leaving only the middle open. If you have to toss it into the endzone and hope for a miracle I'd rather do it Down 6 knowing a completion wins the game rather than knowing I need a lucky play to even have a chance at the onsides kick.
Ironically, Norv Turner is 1 of the only coaches I have seen go for the kick the FG strategy right away (did it in 2007 @GB ) but they were unable to recover the onsides kick.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by tuluse :: Fri, 12/10/2010 - 6:07am
It's not as clear as that. Once you get to the 25, you very close to the end zone which is hard to do. Your chances of scoring a TD from there are much higher than after recovering the on-side kick.
28
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Anonymous3 (not verified) :: Fri, 12/10/2010 - 1:53pm
Your chances after recovering the on-side kick are zero if you spend so much time scoring the TD that the extra point happens after 0:00.

Why did the Cardinals sign Bartel to be their short term backup QB? Did Jeff Garcia laugh at them when he was offered money?
I mean, it's not like the Cardinals actually care about what their current backup QB can do for the remaining four games. They just want somebody who can go out there when Skelton gets hurt, not get killed, and maybe show a touch of competency so they can evaluate the other players on the roster. And also give advice to Skelton about not getting killed. And perhaps not cost a lot.

Forecast for downtown Chicago:
Sunday: Snow and areas of blowing snow. Temperature falling to around 20 by 5pm. Wind chill values as low as zero. Very windy, with a north northwest wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to between 30 and 35 mph. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.
Are you ready for some football?

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

And the current forecast is similar:
Very windy. Snow. Areas of blowing snow. Snow accumulation of 4 to 6 inches. Total snow accumulation 4 to 8 inches. Much colder. Highs in the mid 20s. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 35 mph at times becoming north and increasing to 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 50 mph at times. Chance of precipitation 90 percent.
Great break for the Bears! That'll wipe out NE's passing game (I remember the 2008 NE@BUF game with similar winds (though no snow). I think both teams combined for something like 20 pass attempts). I'll be surprised if NE can win.

Alexander -- The substance that Spikes was reportedly using was Adderall. He may have been abusing it as a stimulant, but it's equally plausible that he has a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD, and didn't do sufficient diligence about the chemicals in his prescription medication. If the latter is the case, Spikes is guilty of making a mistake, but I don't think it's one worthy of a 4-game suspension, much less forfeiture of wins.
63
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Alexander :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 2:42pm
Just that it may or may not be applicable in this case doesn't mean it shouldn't be considered.
Adderall is a performance enhancer nonetheless and if he had a prescription he wouldn't be suspended because many players have ADD or AHDH.
I don't think that there is a strong argument that players don't understand the PED policy, its not difficult at all.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by dmb :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 4:01pm
You proposed the idea in a reply to a comment that was specifically about Spikes, so I interpreted that as advocating for its use in this case.
My understanding was that a player can be punished for using a substance on the banned list even with a prescription, if the player doesn't follow certain procedures to clear use with the league. However, I may be completely mistaken about that, and if so, then there's much less reason to argue for leniency on Spikes' behalf.

Ryan Torain has runs of 54, 23, 12, and 10 yards (overall, 7 carries for 102 yards), but the Redskins haven't turned any of that yardage into points. Their first drive was mostly the 54-yarder, and Graham Gano clanked a 34-yarder off the upright. The second drive ends in a punt.
LeGarette Blount has also started strong (3 carries for 28 yards), and given the messy conditions and the Redskins' total failure to stop Brandon Jacobs last week, I expect he'll continue to have an excellent day.
56
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by dmb :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 2:33pm
And Torain starts his third drive with a 14-yarder. The Bucs are getting absolutely gashed on the stretch play, with or without Gerald McCoy (who left about halfway through the first quarter).

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by dmb :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 2:40pm
Another 12-yarder. The Redskins have a total of 14 carries for 144 yards. That may very well be a season-high, and it's not even three minutes into the second quarter! That said, the Bucs will start stacking the box sooner or later, and forcing the Redskins to throw could mean the end of all this offensive competency nonsense.

Perhaps due to those first two misses, the Redskins go for it on 4th and Goal from the 1. They convert by throwing to their third-string TE, Logan Paulsen. Gano promptly hooks the XP left, but it just manages to pass through the uprights before hitting the net far wide of the posts.

Strange turn of events in OAK/JAX. Jags WR is in the process of completing a catch, Tyvon Branch tackles him and forces an iffy fumble that is recovered by Mike Mitchell (yes, Mike Mitchell). They say there was holding on JAX, which is of course declined. Then they say the Jags receiver was ruled down by contact, despite that they announced it was a change of possession, but the penalty is accepted so it's a replay of the down. Raiders have challenged the play, so stay tuned.

114
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by dmb :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 3:36pm
I think that one was on Shanahan; it seemed like both the players and the play came out late after the TO. Using the TO was also a bit of a strange decision at that point. There were 20 seconds left in the half, and it was their last time-out; by burning that TO, they probably couldn't afford to risk running the ball and getting stuffed outside of the end zone. I don't know for certain how long it takes to get a FG on the field, lined up, and have the ball snapped, but I think ~12 seconds would probably be pushing it.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

That's what I found particularly egregious. The Skins had just called a timeout, and they still get called for a delay-of-game?
And Donovan still tried to call a second timeout, in spite of
a) NFL rules don't allow a team to call two consecutive timeouts
b) the Redskins didn't have any timeouts left
Really a terrible sequence by the Redskins.

Bill was very right about the descriptiveness of the NFL's play-by-play varying wildly depending on who's doing it. For example, the WAS-TB scorer used the word "impetus."
"0-0-WAS 30: G.Gano kicks 36 yards from WAS 30 to TB 34, impetus ends at TB 29. P.Parker pushed ob at TB 38 for 4 yards (B.Westbrook)."

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by young curmudgeon :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 3:29pm
The hit on Roethlisberger on 3rd down HAS to be called late. The Bengal lineman got far more than a step after the ball was away. Yes, yes, I know, those of us who are Pittsburgh fans are always complaining about a double standard for quarterbacks, but if Manning is hit like that, it's called. If Brady is hit like that, it's called. If Harrison or Woodley hits someone like that, it's called. Some QB's are protected, some are fair game, and unfortunately for Ben, he's in the latter category.

I'm sure this has been discussed, but does anyone else think they would've gone 16-0 again in 2008 with Brady against that schedule? I do. That would've been interesting.
The Bengals are just hitting everyone really hard today. Even on that back of the end zone forceout, they just blasted him.
142
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by RickD :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 4:03pm
I don't think they would have gone 16-0, but considering that they went 11-5 with Matt Cassel as QB, I think it's reasonable to contend that they would have gone at least 12-4 with a healthy Brady for the whole season. So they would have made the playoffs instead of missing them.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by erniecohen :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 3:52pm
The diffrence is that the hit on Brady was by a DL who was falling to the ground, and couldn't really be expected to see whether the Qb still had the ball. The late hit that Ben just took was by a lineman who could clearly see that the ball was gone, and intentionally tackled the QB after the pass was away, just to dish out punishment. That should always be a penalty.

136
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by RickD :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 3:59pm
I didn't know that "couldn't really be expected to see whether the QB still had the ball" was considered a valid defense to somebody accused of making a late hit.
Pollard wasn't falling to the ground. He was already on the ground. He was crawling around, and lunged toward Brady in a manner that could only hit the QB low. Even the rules at the time explicitly said that a defender isn't allow to intentionally hit the QB in the knees.
Also, Pollard was looking right at Brady while he was going for him.
141
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Dave :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 4:02pm
Also, Pollard is a noted late-hit artist who also ended Anthony Gonzalez's 2010 season and Wes Welker's 2009 season.
Well, not really to the latter, as that was the Houston turf monster, but Pollard got credit for the "tackle" so it's still his fault.

It's not the QB who matters with these situations, it's the refs. Some refs call things tight, some have a more "let em play" attitude.
117
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Dave :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 3:39pm
Exactly. Quit the whining. We all know the refs are bad, and we've all been victimized by it. Maybe if your QB would actually get rid of the damn ball before five seconds have elapsed and three defenders arrive, he'd take fewer hits and there wouldn't be as many chances for the refs to screw up.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Dave :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 3:37pm
Lots of shockingly bad football across the league in the first half. And not all that much of it is weather-related. Just dumb decisions, QBs standing around forever waiting to be sacked, Drew Henson running straight backwards to take a 19 yard loss, Garrard taking two dumb sacks to be taken out of FG range, Jennings dropping a long completion into Spievey's hands, McNabb being McNabb, etc. It's like watching the JV teams.
Question: Why would Green Bay decline the Personal Foul on the INT return? They accepted the block in the back and not the 15 yard UNR. Shouldn't a personal foul be enforced in addition to the block in the back? I know I've seen multiple penalties enforced on the same play. Seems like if that one's not enforced after another flag, you're basically giving people a free pass to go bludgeon somebody.
119
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Jonadan :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 3:40pm
I don't remember the play at the moment: I'm pretty sure the PF is only enforced "in addition" if it's after the play.
127
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by Dave :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 3:47pm
Yeah, I'm sure that explains the difference. They didn't show it while I was watching, so I don't know what/when/where the UNR was. (Farther up the field than the BitB obviously.) But it still sounds like an opportunity for a free shot if you know your team has already been flagged. Seems like they shouldn't allow that.
126
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by B :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 3:46pm
Penalty yards don't stack. It would have been either 15 yards from the end of the play if they accept the personal foul, or 10 yards from the point of the block if they accept that penalty.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by 0tarin :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 4:06pm
I'm not sure if my memory's faulty or not, but as I recall, penalty yards *can* stack, if the 2007 Pats-Ravens game is any evidence. After an insane series of events allowing NE to drive downfield for the eventually winning score, Bart Scott got assessed for stacking 15-yard penalties on the KO, letting the Pats boot it from the Ravens' 40.

On First and Goal a half-yard from the goalline, Josh Freeman loses his grip of the ball, and the Redskins are bailed out. They've been absolutely dominated so far this half.

I've watched something like 6 or 7 plays of the OAK-JAX game, and I've seen 3 TDs plus a turnover. And no, I don't have the RedZone channel.
Also, the JAX pass defense in a nutshell: Jason Campbell started out 12/15 for 233 yards and 2 TDs.

It would amuse me greatly if the Lions-Pack ended 3-0, and then there were 80mph winds next week that led to a 6-0 Packer win (turnover for TD, missed XP seems more likely than 2 FGs). 3-0, 6-0, 9-0 wins for the same team would make me smile.
I've been saying this for years, so it's nice that it's finally becoming more obvious: McNabb is bad.

I don't know how it's becoming "more obvious." He's been mediocre in his first year in a new offense with very little protection. If you've watched the Redskins much this year, you'll know that their pass blocking has been pretty consistently awful ... which is actually a step up from last year.

His accuracy comes and goes, and his clock management is exactly what you'd expect from a player coached by Andy Reid for a decade. But he generally does pretty well with his reads, can keep more plays alive than the vast majority of QBs, and has a good arm. He's absolutely not -- and probably never has been -- a top-5 QB or anything, but I would argue that he's been above-average for most of his career. Unless you have a highly unconventional definition of "bad," I don't think you'll find much evidence that he's been a bad QB his whole career. Can you name 20 QBs who were better than him in each season of his career?

3-1-TB 3(:28) R.Torain right end ran ob at TB 6 for -3 yards (T.Crowder).

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
by sam :: Sun, 12/12/2010 - 7:21pm
Well, most Jags fans don't consider them serious conference contenders and don't think they haeve a defense. So you're not alone. But they are in year 2 of a massive rebuilding project that most thought would take 3-4 years. They're better than they were last year--when things don't go their way, they don't collapse. You can see that within individual games (like getting down 10 to Oakland) and in the way that they didn't spin out of control after two early blowouts.
What they are is a team with a dominant running game (in TEN last week, Maurice Jones-Drew averaged 7 yards per carry on plays where TEN had 8 or more in the box) and a passing game that is getting more efficient. They gave up a lot of yards to the raiders on the ground, but most of those came on a just a handful of really bad plays. Their run defense has really improved since they played at KC. Their pass defense was improving until Courtney Green got hurt at safety.

So I go to Chipotle to get a burrito before the Pats game starts. Listening to the Redskins on the radio (and let me say, Sam Huff and Sonny Jurgensen make that quite an experience).
First I hear the TD pass to Kellen Winslow.
"He's been around for a while," says Jurgensen.
"That's his son," says Huff.
Anyway, so the Redskins somehow manage to get the tying TD before the clock runs out. "I'll just go into the Chipotle quickly and be back in the car for OT" I think.
Should know better than to take a Redskins PAT for granted.
The Redskins are showing all the signs of being a poorly coached team.

"Comments like this remind me that Brady was hit late, low to the knee, by Bernard Pollard, ending his 2008 season before it even started. No penalty was called.
And yet Steelers' fans whine about how Brady always gets all the calls."
1. You complain about me "whining" and then post a complaint about one play your team does poorly in the course of blowing out a conference leading opponent? As membership chair, I'm reviewing your application to the whiners' club, and I think I can assure you that you'll be accepted.
2. Welcome to Sample Size Theatre--yes, it was a horrific hit on Brady and he didn't get the call. It was one time.
3. On the Monday night game, Collinsworth quoted Andy Reid's complaints about the hits Michael Vick has been taking and said something to the effect that "Manning gets that call...Brady gets that call." Is it "Steelers' fans," or is it an increasingly common perception.
4. Even though it's may be an increasingly common perception, it may be wrong; unlike some posters here, I myself have been wrong a few times in the past. I will admit that most of the examples that come to mind have involved Manning, who seems to receive the benefit of a flag if the defender looks at his helmet disapprovingly.

By itself, snow is harmless. It's easier to deal with than rain. It's the wind, which appears to have taken a break (at least it has at my house), that's a real issue.
It just amazed me, though, how much better prepared the Patriots are for bad weather than every other team.
Hard to say that should be overturned, even though he sure seemed down... his butt was on the shoe, not the actual ground. If it's 21-0, that's game over right there, and quite possible the third consecutive enormous blowout win in snow for the Patriots.

Funny commentators praising Slater and his "heads up play/not giving up" for catching D.Manning on that KOR, while the only reason he was able to make that tackle is because he was being manhandled 20 yards away from the kick returner.
And hey, yeah Urlacher, the Bears are really the best team in the NFL. 24-0 in the snow, that is pretty bad.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Their offensive line just stinks. They've already had a false start, and a totally blown assignment on a run play leading to a 5 yard loss. And Manning has been hurried on every dropback.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/tiny/xG865
Since 1960, the record (I think) is 2.79 by the 1994 New England Patriots. Indianapolis is at 3.40 so far this year. So it looks unlikely that they will make a run at the record.
However, to really make it a fair comparison, there needs to be an adjustment for era, since yards per carry has been increasing league-wide.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Terrible technique by Cortland Finnegan on that long completion to Wayne. Reggie just jogged past the attempted armbar. I understand Finnegan is one of the slightly better corners around but that's a mismatch one on one.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I don't know... To me, it looked like he stumbled. I guess that's also bad tecnique. I think he had good coverage when the ball was released, but stumbled, and Wayne got open off of that.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
For all the ridicule that Pierre Garcon has come in for around these parts, that was a really nice play that ought to have iced this one.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Strange that they then went so conservative though......
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Yes, the booth commentary was cringe-worthy.
4th and 1!!!
But since they'd gotten a stop against the Colts on the previous drive, that was somehow more important than the fact that the Colts had moved the ball with ease most of the evening.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
That logic was nowhere near as bad as them both arguing that they should've kicked the FG from the 14 then onside kicked it and hoped for a TD from their own 40 with less than :30 left. It was made even stupider by the fact that they kept talking about it for several plays afterward.
The Colt D should be embarrassed after that performance.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
"so... they stopped them last drive."
Yes, and clearly, that was a trend that was likely to continue.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Spread was Colts -3, I think that explains it all.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Are you kidding? You'd rather kick from inside the 20 and then try to score a TD after recovering a kick at your own 40?
Play for the TD when the TD is at least somewhat easy to obtain. The field is a lot shorter after a successful onside kick when all you need is a FG.
The error wasn't in the decision to try for a TD, it was in the plays they ran and the inexplicable decision to throw over the middle (and catch it) short of the goal line.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Exactly.
Toss it into the endzone 3 times, not inbounds, not short and then kick. Then get the onside and hope a clown on a purple kangaroo will help you get the touchdown.
If you made the TD, getting into FG range will do.
Really, what the titans did, was the worst thing they could do.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
It's not as clear as that. Once you get to the 25, you very close to the end zone which is hard to do. Your chances of scoring a TD from there are much higher than after recovering the on-side kick.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Your chances after recovering the on-side kick are zero if you spend so much time scoring the TD that the extra point happens after 0:00.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
That's not really a counter-argument - I think we all agree, that the Tians' way was the worst of all.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
You think the Bears have a better running game than the Pats? FO has the Pats' rushing game #1 in DVOA, while the Bears are #26.
The Pats' Achilles heel is their pass defense. I don't see how a team that cannot pass would hope to move the ball.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I live 2 blocks away from Soldier Field. The blizzard out here is unbelievable. Winds gusting so hard that the snow hurts when it hits your face. Good thing I'm not going outside anymore today. Can't imagine what it will be like once the sun goes down.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Sure, but it's not going to happen. The NCAA said that rules were broken in the Cam Newton saga but didn't do anything of any impact about it.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I'm just saying that, If Auburn had been disallowed from the BCS right now and the Pats kicked from the playoffs right now, I'm fairly certain that violations would decrease.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Perhaps. I think people cheat because they don't fear getting caught, not because the punishments aren't severe enough. Don't forget that Spikes will miss four games, and lose 1/4 of his salary. That is a pretty hefty punishment.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Pats fans don't care that he got caught. They are really just sad that he won't be available for the next four games. What would Pats fans be doing to Spikes if he cost them their best season since Brady's knee got scrambled.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Your suggestion wouldn't matter to Spikes. The article says nothing about steroids.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I absolutely agree with you that such punishments would essentially kill these violations. I just don't see it happening though.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Just because you don't see it happening does not make it a bad plan.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Alexander -- The substance that Spikes was reportedly using was Adderall. He may have been abusing it as a stimulant, but it's equally plausible that he has a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD, and didn't do sufficient diligence about the chemicals in his prescription medication. If the latter is the case, Spikes is guilty of making a mistake, but I don't think it's one worthy of a 4-game suspension, much less forfeiture of wins.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Just that it may or may not be applicable in this case doesn't mean it shouldn't be considered.
Adderall is a performance enhancer nonetheless and if he had a prescription he wouldn't be suspended because many players have ADD or AHDH.
I don't think that there is a strong argument that players don't understand the PED policy, its not difficult at all.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
You proposed the idea in a reply to a comment that was specifically about Spikes, so I interpreted that as advocating for its use in this case.
My understanding was that a player can be punished for using a substance on the banned list even with a prescription, if the player doesn't follow certain procedures to clear use with the league. However, I may be completely mistaken about that, and if so, then there's much less reason to argue for leniency on Spikes' behalf.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I think you must jump through a few additional hoops, because otherwise players would doctor-shop and get prescriptions for testosterone etc.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Ryan Torain has runs of 54, 23, 12, and 10 yards (overall, 7 carries for 102 yards), but the Redskins haven't turned any of that yardage into points. Their first drive was mostly the 54-yarder, and Graham Gano clanked a 34-yarder off the upright. The second drive ends in a punt.
LeGarette Blount has also started strong (3 carries for 28 yards), and given the messy conditions and the Redskins' total failure to stop Brandon Jacobs last week, I expect he'll continue to have an excellent day.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
And Torain starts his third drive with a 14-yarder. The Bucs are getting absolutely gashed on the stretch play, with or without Gerald McCoy (who left about halfway through the first quarter).
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Another 12-yarder. The Redskins have a total of 14 carries for 144 yards. That may very well be a season-high, and it's not even three minutes into the second quarter! That said, the Bucs will start stacking the box sooner or later, and forcing the Redskins to throw could mean the end of all this offensive competency nonsense.

Torain adds a 19-yarder. At the two-minute warning, Torain has 18 carries(!) for 158 yards.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

You can take the McNabb out of Reid, but not the Reid of out McNabb.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
But who's to blame, McNabb or Shanahan?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Matt Flynn, who was the colleague of JaMarcus Russell at LSU. Croyle has spent his entire career in KC after being drafted by them in the 3rd round, and will start this week in placed of Matt Cassel.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I like the phrase "colleague of JaMarcus Russell at LSU." Makes it sound like they wrote papers together for academic journals.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Thanks -- I was going for exactly that.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Brodie Croyle never played for the Packers.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Well, I guess I'm just dumb. Or forgetful.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
This is like the second or third time this year that Ben has done an ill-timed spike that ended up forcing PIT to kick on 4th. This is a piece clock management that gets botched all the time, but which nobody ever seems to notice.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Roethlisberger is not a particularly smart man.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The hit on Roethlisberger on 3rd down HAS to be called late. The Bengal lineman got far more than a step after the ball was away. Yes, yes, I know, those of us who are Pittsburgh fans are always complaining about a double standard for quarterbacks, but if Manning is hit like that, it's called. If Brady is hit like that, it's called. If Harrison or Woodley hits someone like that, it's called. Some QB's are protected, some are fair game, and unfortunately for Ben, he's in the latter category.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Comments like this remind me that Brady was hit late, low to the knee, by Bernard Pollard, ending his 2008 season before it even started. No penalty was called.
And yet Steelers' fans whine about how Brady always gets all the calls.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Well, to be fair, ever since then he kind of has...
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
They're not protecting him. They're protecting the hair.
NOTE: This is a joke.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Well, since he lost a complete season after the season the Pats went 16-0, I would hope so!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I'm sure this has been discussed, but does anyone else think they would've gone 16-0 again in 2008 with Brady against that schedule? I do. That would've been interesting.
The Bengals are just hitting everyone really hard today. Even on that back of the end zone forceout, they just blasted him.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I don't think they would have gone 16-0, but considering that they went 11-5 with Matt Cassel as QB, I think it's reasonable to contend that they would have gone at least 12-4 with a healthy Brady for the whole season. So they would have made the playoffs instead of missing them.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I forgot about the birth of the wildcat. I think it's possible that they'd have been similarly unprepared and defenseless regardless of their QB that day. So maybe not. Still fun/upsetting to think about, depending on your point of view.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The Brady play helped initiate new rules. Despite those new rules, Ben is not getting the protection they're supposed to provide.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Pollard could have been flagged under the rules that were in place at the time.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
He got blocked into a position where his only recourse was diving for Brady, IIRC. The play was called correctly.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The diffrence is that the hit on Brady was by a DL who was falling to the ground, and couldn't really be expected to see whether the Qb still had the ball. The late hit that Ben just took was by a lineman who could clearly see that the ball was gone, and intentionally tackled the QB after the pass was away, just to dish out punishment. That should always be a penalty.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Pollard plays D Line?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I didn't know that "couldn't really be expected to see whether the QB still had the ball" was considered a valid defense to somebody accused of making a late hit.
Pollard wasn't falling to the ground. He was already on the ground. He was crawling around, and lunged toward Brady in a manner that could only hit the QB low. Even the rules at the time explicitly said that a defender isn't allow to intentionally hit the QB in the knees.
Also, Pollard was looking right at Brady while he was going for him.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Also, Pollard is a noted late-hit artist who also ended Anthony Gonzalez's 2010 season and Wes Welker's 2009 season.
Well, not really to the latter, as that was the Houston turf monster, but Pollard got credit for the "tackle" so it's still his fault.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Nice reasoning. Hope you're joking.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
About Welker? Well yeah, obviously.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Didn't Carson Palmer get injured in that way?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
It's not the QB who matters with these situations, it's the refs. Some refs call things tight, some have a more "let em play" attitude.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Sure, but for some reason every set of refs "lets em play" with BRoeth this year in a way they've proven they won't let happen with guys like Peyton Manning.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I'm a Patriots fan, but there absolutely should have been late hits called a couple of times.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
...and the Redskins promptly fumble the 2nd half kickoff.
I'm so glad I'm not a Redskins fan. This is painful.
FALL ON THE BALL!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I don't remember the play at the moment: I'm pretty sure the PF is only enforced "in addition" if it's after the play.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, I'm sure that explains the difference. They didn't show it while I was watching, so I don't know what/when/where the UNR was. (Farther up the field than the BitB obviously.) But it still sounds like an opportunity for a free shot if you know your team has already been flagged. Seems like they shouldn't allow that.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Penalty yards don't stack. It would have been either 15 yards from the end of the play if they accept the personal foul, or 10 yards from the point of the block if they accept that penalty.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I'm not sure if my memory's faulty or not, but as I recall, penalty yards *can* stack, if the 2007 Pats-Ravens game is any evidence. After an insane series of events allowing NE to drive downfield for the eventually winning score, Bart Scott got assessed for stacking 15-yard penalties on the KO, letting the Pats boot it from the Ravens' 40.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The penalties were after the play, so they stacked.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Right, I was simply taking umbrage at the blanket statement that they "don't stack".
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I think that only happens if there are multiple personal fouls on one team or if there is a penalty during the play and a PF after the play.
Hail Hydra!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I think it was a personal foul after the touchdown then another one during the XP.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I believe it was roughness on the PAT and then unsportsmanlike (for chucking the flag into the stands) after the fact. So yes, probably correct.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Landon Johnson is now down for the Lions.
EDIT: He's now being carted off.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
As a Colts fan, let me just say that I really do not look forward to the Raiders game at all. Especially if they end up getting flexed.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
James Harrison might have picked that batted ball off, were he not being held by the facemask...

McFadden blows through another Considine tackle for a TD. Sean Considine is the rich man's Sabby Piscitelli.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Drew Stanton is posting a mighty 3-11 line for 0 net yards on the day. Inside a dome.
Not to be outdone, Jimmy Claussen gets sacked out of field goal range, and the Panthers passing attack is at -13 yards on the day.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Do people make a point of asking Mel Kiper why he was so positive about Jiimmy Clausen's future?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Because he's buddy buddy with his agent.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Oh, I know that. I just wish more people would be intent on publicly embarrassing Kiper. ESPN is going to do it.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The Atlanta Falcons' d-line is a system of heat-seeking missiles. The Carolina Panthers' offensive line is a collection of wet paper bags. Guess who's winning that battle?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
After seeing Aaron Rodgers get knocked from the game due to a concussion sustained while not sliding, you'd think Matt Flynn might exercise a bit of caution.
Instead, impressive 3rd and 10 conversion run, head first dive... right into a teammate's knee. No harm done, but wow.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Depth Chart only shows 2 QBs. Do they have a 3rd?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
If I can trust the commentators, no, GB does not have a 3rd QB. Which is a shame, because watching a 3rd QB-3rd QB matchup would be... special.

Consistently funny. The cake bit is one of the ten funniest things I've ever read on the internet.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
At this rate, Don Majkowski will be starting for the Packers in Foxboro next week.
Or maybe Bart Starr?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Now, I think the Pats are the best team in the league regardless, but man... it's a little annoying to see them getting a break for these next two games. The weather here completely negates their only weakness, and now next week they get a free pass against a good Quarterback, barring an unlikely recovery.
I guess it annoys me as a semi-Packer fan.
Tom Cable just threw the challenge flag more emphatically than anyone I've ever seen. And he's going to lose.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I hear there's a movie coming out next year that will chronicle how a dark, mysterious cabal got together at a castle in Salem, MA, in 2000 and determined how the Patriots would dominate the NFL in the 21st Century. Seriously...Tuck rule, Spygate, Brady Rule, concussions. It's all there. At the end Terrell Suggs's puppy is even stomped to death on by Danny Woodhead. I smell Oscar.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The Green Bay-Detroit game is truly dreadful
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
It may as well be a Pottsville Maroons vs. Duluth Eskimos game.
Or, well, Green Bay Packers vs. Portsmouth Spartans.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Portsmouth just scored a TD!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
First and Thirty?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Is Pittsburgh playing that badly or is Cincy just really up for this game?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Typical OMAR game.
No discipline.
Dumb fouls, not getting in refs ear about bad calls, not fired up early, poor game design on O, beat by terrible gimmick play on D, no real signs of concern, no "fire", just hanging around, playing up and down to competition. Thinking that kicking FGs will win you the game.
--------------------
Men are more ready to repay an injury than a benefit because gratitude is a burden and revenge a pleasure.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Ben is obviously not himself, the Bengal D is fired up, and so we have a sloppy game that the Steelers will ultimately still win as long as Carson Palmer is Quarterbacking the Bengal offense. I wouldn't say they're playing terribly, they're just kind of off. Like almost every other team.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Why do you bother? Mike Tomlin is wrong. He's always wrong. In the event he's not wrong, he's still wrong. Everything positive to Mike Tomlin is luck. The opponents are never trying and they never make a good play. It's always that Mike Tomlin has failed to properly anticipate and prepare his team for every single eventuality that could conceivably happen, no matter how unlikely or improbable. Mike Tomlin is, in fact, the Devil and acts in concert with Roger Goodell, all referees and the Tripartite Commission to destroy the Steelers.
Hail Hydra!

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I want Matt Flynn to score on a QB sneak just so we can use the "In Like Flynn" line.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Uncontested blitz up the A gap nearly beats the snap to Ben. So that was pretty bad.
And then they punt from the 32.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
It was 3rd-and-24. Better let the D go to work (and I said that even prior to the pick 6).
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I've watched something like 6 or 7 plays of the OAK-JAX game, and I've seen 3 TDs plus a turnover. And no, I don't have the RedZone channel.
Also, the JAX pass defense in a nutshell: Jason Campbell started out 12/15 for 233 yards and 2 TDs.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I think that's the best game today @ 1.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Palmer throws another pick 6.
Game Over.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
But the Bengals haven't even had the chance to punt at a disputably inappropriate time yet!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Here you go. They punted and the Steelers come out with the one receiver formations.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
It would amuse me greatly if the Lions-Pack ended 3-0, and then there were 80mph winds next week that led to a 6-0 Packer win (turnover for TD, missed XP seems more likely than 2 FGs). 3-0, 6-0, 9-0 wins for the same team would make me smile.
I've been saying this for years, so it's nice that it's finally becoming more obvious: McNabb is bad.
Although that last sack wasn't his fault... jeez. Block, maybe?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Poor Detroit fans--will they see a better game tomorrow? Root for the Giants againt Minny?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Uh oh. Stanton has completed some passes and the Lions are in scoring range. How will they screw this up?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The Lions have taken the lead.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
And they score! Wow. From 0 yards passing to an 80 yard TD drive. And now we get to see Flynn try to come back against a very good D Line. This could be an absolute disaster for the Pack playoff hopes.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Well, we've scored now, so that means: total defensive breakdown for the remaining eight minutes, here we go!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Just on cue, we're apparently playing prevent or near-prevent, and Flynn's marching the Pack down the field. Come on guys!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I don't know how it's becoming "more obvious." He's been mediocre in his first year in a new offense with very little protection. If you've watched the Redskins much this year, you'll know that their pass blocking has been pretty consistently awful ... which is actually a step up from last year.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Pass pro has very little to do with a general lack of intelligence and throwing screen passes into the ground behind the receiver. He has been doing that crap for years.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
His accuracy comes and goes, and his clock management is exactly what you'd expect from a player coached by Andy Reid for a decade. But he generally does pretty well with his reads, can keep more plays alive than the vast majority of QBs, and has a good arm. He's absolutely not -- and probably never has been -- a top-5 QB or anything, but I would argue that he's been above-average for most of his career. Unless you have a highly unconventional definition of "bad," I don't think you'll find much evidence that he's been a bad QB his whole career. Can you name 20 QBs who were better than him in each season of his career?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Top 5? I think he was for a large part of the 00s. Who would you take over him from 2000-2005? P Manning, Brady, Trent Green, then who? Brett Favre? Rich Gannon? Steve McNair? I could see Kurt Warner I guess. Unless you have to play outside on grass.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Carson Palmer throws a second pick-6, this one to Lamar Woodley.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
If you want to make an argument for Rodgers as MVP, look what the Packers are reduced to without him....
I mean I know Brady pretty much has it wrapped up, but we've seen the Pats play well without Brady...
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Except they were looking pretty lousy offensively today even when he was in the game.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I'm not sure "his backup's much worse than he is" is a good argument for giving somebody the MVP, especially for a quarterback.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Personally I think it's a terrible one. Punish the best player because his supporting cast is also good!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
That happened in reverse to Matt Cassel. People thought he was pretty good because the Patriots had a good season with him in place of Tom Brady.
No, Brady is overrated and the Patriots as a team are just that good.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Looking at the way the Chiefs got smoked today - maybe Cassel is the real MVP.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
On 2nd and 15, Carson Palmer... falls down. Brilliant.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Not that anyone is watching the Browns-Bills, but Delhomme is not very good.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Wow. Orakpo gets corralled, Barron-style, on a long TD pass to Kellen Winslow. Then the refs take away a good return by Brandon Banks on a very borderline hold called on Mike Sellers. Then the refs blow a questionable catch by Santana Moss dead prematurely; if he caught it, the quick whistle took away 30+ YAC.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
There isn't indisputable evidence in either direction on the the pass to Moss, so the incomplete call stands.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Redskins, you gotta be kidding me! can't snap an extra point to tie game with 10 seconds left???
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Well, if it's any consolation:
1-10-TB 12(:49) (Shotgun) D.McNabb pass short right to A.Armstrong to TB 3 for 9 yards (C.Lynch).
Timeout #2 by WAS at 00:32.
2-1-TB 3(:32) D.McNabb pass incomplete short right to R.Williams.
3-1-TB 3(:28) R.Torain right end ran ob at TB 6 for -3 yards (T.Crowder).
4-4-TB 6(:18) D.McNabb pass incomplete short middle to F.Davis.
Washington Redskins 0:04
4-4-TB 6(:13) D.McNabb pass short middle to S.Moss for 6 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
That's right. 5th down scores the potential game tie.
I hate to see the Skins lose under any circumstances, but better it end like this than go to overtime on that grade of clusterfuck.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
They said on the broadcast that the Armstrong catch was ruled to be for a first down. Dunno if that was CYA at its finest, or what.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Wow. And now the Packers are probably going to miss the playoffs because their QB didn't slide. Ugh.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
McCarthy, 4th and 1 and you go for broke? Maybe if it was Rodgers, I could see it, but with Flynn?
I love red zone ;) don't miss directv at all.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I can't decide what I want: Jags to lose to slip back to a tie with the Colts, or Jags to win, forcing the Colts to play under more pressure and eliminating the possibility that the 12/26 game gets flexed.
Either way, looks like we could have an interesting finish, unless Boller is just teasing us again.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Awful tackling and the Raiders have already tied it. Too early. Still lots of time for America's QB to lead a FG drive now.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Raiders/Jags is entertaining. At least Raiders can kick a tying extra point.

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
MJD with a TD to save my fantasy team's chances.
However, Oakland has time to score again to make this even more interesting.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Am I the only one who think the Raiders intentionally let MJD score there? I mean if Raiders make a valiant stand that eats up the clock, and they kick a winning FG most likely. Now they got a good chance to tie it up.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
It looked a lot like it. Doesn't mean it's intentional though.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Jax-Raiders game is on... quite entertaining.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
So after the Steelers game, CBS has switched to Oakland-Jacksonville just after the Raiders tied it at 31. I watched two plays: Jax return man going 65 yards and MJD ripping through the Raiders D to retake the lead.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
5th and one. I just want to point out, that the the spread was Tamba -3.
Man, I'd would be pissed!
I'm very much not pissed, as I don't gamble, and my Fantasy opponent has McFadden on his bench.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Your opponent decided to not start McFadden against the Jags? Who did he start?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Foster and Tomlinson, so I'm not out of the woods yet...
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The talking heads are claiming a bad call on that hit that knocked Campbell out. Apparently they didn't see the helmet-to-helmet hit.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Campbell doesn't have Vick's arm, but surely he can throw it 40 yards to endzone, yes? What the hell was that?
Hail Hydra!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Raiders receiver should've dropped it.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I still don't know whether I can consider Jacksonville legitimately good, first place in their division or not. I certainly don't think they're even a conference contender, let alone Super Bowl threat - they've not really got a defense.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Simms: The New England Patriots aren't from Miami. Makes sense, cause then the'd be the Miami Patriots.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
It also makes sense because there's already the Miami Dolphins.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
...and how can the Pats' 3rd down defense be this bad? They have the Bears at 3rd and 18 and promptly give up a 19-yard pass.
Baffling.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Yes, and I guess if you were climbing into bed with Angelina Jolie tonight, you'd be complaining about her fat lips....
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Is Mark Sanchez psychologically damaged?
Or can he rebound?
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
He rebounded from his INT prone performances last season.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Two long TD drives for the Patriots and it's 14-0. They're making it look easy.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, the snow isn't bothering the offense at all.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
By itself, snow is harmless. It's easier to deal with than rain. It's the wind, which appears to have taken a break (at least it has at my house), that's a real issue.
It just amazed me, though, how much better prepared the Patriots are for bad weather than every other team.
Hard to say that should be overturned, even though he sure seemed down... his butt was on the shoe, not the actual ground. If it's 21-0, that's game over right there, and quite possible the third consecutive enormous blowout win in snow for the Patriots.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Where was his left elbow/forearm?
-----------------
Men are more ready to repay an injury than a benefit because gratitude is a burden and revenge a pleasure.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Not near the ground.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I'm hard-pressed to be comfortable with any lead with the Pats' defense.
But yeah, that's a killer turnover.
The Bears are in dire need of a scoring drive.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
...and like that, a fumble return and it's NE 21-0. But was it really a fumble? Hard to tell.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I <3 Devin McCourty.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
From Patriots twitter:
Some impressive stat lines so far: BenJarvus Green-Ellis has 7 carries for 50 yards (7.1 avg). Tom Brady is 10-14-112 yds, 118.8 rating
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Patriots should just start Onside kicking. Kick coverage clearly isn't easy in the snow.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Bears punt, Edelman brings it back 42 yards (somehow a hold is not called on 38), Dave writes Game Over in his notebook.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Santonio Holmes with one of the worst drops of the year costs the Jets 4 points. 10-3 Fins.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Funny commentators praising Slater and his "heads up play/not giving up" for catching D.Manning on that KOR, while the only reason he was able to make that tackle is because he was being manhandled 20 yards away from the kick returner.
And hey, yeah Urlacher, the Bears are really the best team in the NFL. 24-0 in the snow, that is pretty bad.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
A 30-yard FG in the snow looks like quite an adventure. I wouldn't count on any FG longer than that today in Chicago.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
...another fumble by the Bears!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Wow, Chicago fans are flipping the channel right now...
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Or flipping the table over at their local bar...
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
I'm not feeling good about this FG by Graham--but he makes it!
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The Bears have 32 net yards and are down 27-0. Time to see what's for dinner.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The Bears look demoralized. Not quite as badly as the Jets did last week, but it's getting there.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
The Bears are determined to drop possible INTs. That's three chances missed so far.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
How do the Bears let that happen on the last play of the half???
Incredible.
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Are the Patriots running up the score?
;-)
Re: Week 14 Open Discussion Thread
Urlacher drops an interception and then the deep half safety decides not to play the deep half...
Another missed extra point.
