Another week of college action for discussion. Hopefully no one gets punched out this week. Right?

Michigan vs. Notre Dame has to be the biggest game of the week for me...though I know that puts me in the minority. Any one got any predictions for the big games? A couple nice PAC 10 vs. Big 10 games...go West Coast!

GT vs Clemson
by Brian Fremeau :: Thu, 09/10/2009 - 10:22pm

I love Georgia Tech's triple option, but you have to get SOMETHING from your passing game. Nesbitt is currently 1/10 passing. The defense looks like they've mailed in the last 15 minutes, and Clemson is threatening to take the lead or tie after a 24-0 opening by the Yellow Jackets.

Colorado at Toledo
by zlionsfan :: Fri, 09/11/2009 - 11:07pm

Wow. I'd like to say Purdue's defense might not be as bad as I thought, but I think it may be more likely that Colorado just isn't going to be very good this year. The Rockets are running right past them. (Great Lakes speed, baby!)

I'd also like to say that Colorado is having problems tackling, kind of like Purdue did.

So much for cracking down ...
by zlionsfan :: Sat, 09/12/2009 - 12:58am

on helmet-to-helmet hits. Toledo's Archie Donald just about killed Cody Hawkins: took his helmet off, nearly knocked him out ... I mean, it was bad enough that the ex-player in the booth actually was talking about it (getting that kind of hit out of the game).

Donald needs to be suspended for the Ohio State game. (Personally I think the suspension should be significantly stronger, maybe even to the point of suspending the head coach as well - accountability - but that's neither here nor there.) The officials missed some calls tonight, but this was really the only one that mattered.

CMU at MSU
by Brian Fremeau :: Sat, 09/12/2009 - 3:28pm

The last 25 seconds of this game have taken about 30 minutes to play. CMU scores, review on a very close call on the touchdown, failed 2-point conversion, successful onside kick, a couple of sideline passes to move into field goal range, first attempt failed but offsides on MSU, and now the game-winner with 3 seconds left.

... and another onsides kick (bouncing a ball of an MSU up-man on the kickoff) wins it.

Defense is optional in Michigan-ND. Irish should probably be comfortably ahead at half based on yardage- 302 yards at half. Lots of flags too. ND is only up 3 at the half.

Wow, crazy finish to Michigan/Notre Dame. I'm so happy. I don't care about Michigan THAT much, but seeing Weis lose is always wonderful.

I miss all the posts we used to get in the college threads.

I hate both teams, but hate ND a little more so it was a great way to end it. Plus I'm more confident that Michigan is going to stink it up this year than ND.

And I agree about missing the old college threads. People just don't know to come to the discussion forums.

...aaaand a nice start for Ohio State - they get the ball, prompt interception returned to the 3, and on 4th and goal, USC runs it in for the TD.

And USC pulls it out with a fantastic final drive. Once again, the Buckeyes lose a big non-conference game. Now we need USC to do their usual and lose a conference game they should win.

And are there any schools with more annoying bands than OSU and USC? And I say this after watching the Michigan-ND game.

Dear Coach Rodriguez,

I saw the game on Saturday and I thought I would write you and let you know that I am interested in playing for your team. I have eligibility left and I think I can play better than that #33 you have in your secondary, Cissoko.

I promise I will show you some good plays on defense like that one near the end of the game. I think that must have been my cousin on the field on that dropped pass.

Please let me know if you will consider my offer.

Sincerely,
Hole in Zone

Saturday games
by zlionsfan :: Sun, 09/13/2009 - 1:48am

This is what I can say after about 10 hours of football on Saturday (I passed on the first hour or two of USC-OSU in favor of Beatles: Rock Band).

We may need to look back at the MAC and reorder some teams. Western Michigan doesn't look nearly as good as they did two weeks ago (losing at Indiana? really?), and Toledo starts to look a little better. Central Michigan did a very nice job at Michigan State. (I also see from scores that Ohio, Bowling Green, and Eastern Michigan did well, but Ball State probably would rather focus on basketball season.)

The Big Ten, sadly, is living down to its new? reputation. Michigan's pass defense was atrocious, Michigan State blew what should have been a winnable home game, Penn State was unimpressive against Syracuse, Purdue's offense makes far too many mistakes, Wisconsin's lucky to have beaten Fresno State. I guess Minnesota likes playing outdoors, huh?

I admire Charlie Weis' decision to go for the kill against Michigan. After watching their run defense and their total lack of pass defense, I can't blame him, and after seeing how those two plays failed, I still can't blame him. There are going to be a lot of people who will blame him, though, and I'm sure he'll take it in his usual fashion. Clausen is possibly a good QB now, although I can't say what he does against a decent defense. He has yet to play one this year.

Oregon has an option QB and ... and ... um ... a couple of decent young RBs. They kept forcing Elliott into mistakes, though, and that was enough to squeak out a win. They were the only Pac-10 team I saw at length today, but I can't say I'm impressed with the conference after USC and Cal. UCLA beat Kiffiekins, which may turn out to be a big win, but who knows?

I'm not convinced the Big 12 is chock full of defense. Oklahoma State gave up a ton of yards and points at home to Houston. Several teams won their expected games today, but Iowa State was waxed by what I think is a poor Iowa team, and hello? Kansas State losing to UL-Lafayette? (Insert joke about Bill Snyder scheduling here.)

I didn't see much of the other conferences. Probably won't watch too much next week ... I'm apparently hosting a Beatles: Rock Band gathering at my house. (They made me do it.)

Fresno State has a solid team. Considering that more than half the Wisconsin team was fighting the flu and dogtired come the fourth quarter that looks like a pretty good win.

Pat Hill blew it by not just forcing the run late in the game. His quarterback was finding holes but with that limp arm at some point those rainbows were going to end up in the wrong hands and that is exactly what happened.

Tarrant:

Agreed. I mostly lurked, but there were some really great discussions.

I would be curious as to what folks think is happening to the Big Ten. Big stadiums. TV network. Rabid fan base.

And yet it looks like the talent level continues to slip.

Thoughts?

My opinion on the Big Ten (and I say this as an Illinois grad) is the coaching isn't nearly as good as it used to be. If you go through the list, there aren't very many, if any, that make you say "I want him to coach my team." Even Tressel seems to get outcoached in every big game.

Re: Big Ten?
by zlionsfan :: Sun, 09/13/2009 - 5:00pm

I can't argue with that. It seems as though at times in the past, you had the top two or three or four teams with solid coaches, a few coaches in the middle who were pretty solid, and even a couple of coaches at the bottom who might be working their way up.

I think there are occasional questions about Tressel and Paterno; I don't think anyone else in the conference is at that level. Dantonio, Bielema, and Fitzgerald aren't bad; Rodriguez should join this group or the former group in a year or so. The rest of the guys, well, I don't know. I'd love to say Hope is going to return Purdue to mid-bowl "prominence" but it's far too early to say.

I don't think it's a talent issue. There's more than enough talent in the Great Lakes area, and schools outside the top two or three recruit from other areas as well. Maybe part of it is the ability (or lack thereof) to adapt to change. Purdue did pretty well when the spread was new to the Big Ten, but once pretty much everyone had seen it, Tiller didn't really have anything to add to it.

Re: Oklahoma State's/Big 12 defense. UH is no slouch offensively. They run the spread, had three second round picks (Volmer, Kolb, Avery) in the last couple of years, and averaged over 40 a game last year (including 37 @ Oklahoma State and 41/70 @ ranked ECU & vs Tulsa).

OSU has to look at it's offense as the problem in that game. They turned the ball over way too much, and had pass protection issues. That, coupled with fortunate bounces, swung the game.
