Week 3 Open Discussion Thread

OK, so maybe there's nothing as sexy as USC-Ohio State. That just means a better-dispersed audience for this week's college action.

Week 3
by Kevin 11 (not verified) :: Thu, 09/17/2009 - 3:51pm

I’m 3 – 1 so far this year. Here are this week’s picks:

Northern Illinois +12 1/2 over Purdue
Florida International +21 over South Carolina
Baylor -10 ½ over UConn

Rumor has it that Colorado will not be firing Dan Hawkins because the athletic department can’t afford the buyout. Usually when you heat this, it’s collegespeak for “boosters, if you really want us to fire this guy, y’all need to cough up some cash”.

The Dan Hawkins Story should be a precautionary tale for schools hot to fire their coach. Suddenly the Gary Barnett era doesn’t seem like such a bad memory in Boulder.

Notre Dame lost last week, which means that speculation that Charlie Weis will be fired is heating up. Is it me, or do most of the people on the “Fire Weis” bandwagon not have Notre Dame’s best interests at heart? If they fire Weis, what happens then? Remember, plenty of high-profile teams have been left embarrassed by their coaching searches…most notably, Notre Dame. If / when they strike out pursuing Urban Meyer and Jon Gruden, they’ll be left disappointed.

Both Phil Fulmer and Tommy Tuberville are said to covet the Louisville job if (aka when) it opens.

What’s the deal with the media ragging on Ohio State and Notre Dame because they lost to teams that have TRUE FRESHMEN at quarterback? Has it occurred to anyone that despite their freshman status Tate Forcier and Matt Barkley are really, really good despite being TRUE FRESHMEN?

Game of the Week is Georgia vs Arkansas. Two very underrated teams, and I’m interested in seeing how Ryan Mallett has developed. Before transferring to Arkansas Mallet was last seen showing great potential as a TRUE FRESHMAN at Michigan two years ago.

My Top 25:

1. Florida
2. Southern Cal
3. Texas
4. Mississippi
5. Penn State
6. Alabama
7. BYU
8. California
9. LSU
10. Ohio State
11. Georgia Tech
12. Oklahoma
13. Miami
14. Boise State
15. Missouri
16. Houston
17. North Carolina
18. Nebraska
19. Cincinnati
20. Oklahoma State
21. Pittsburgh
22. TCU
23. Georgia
23. Michigan
24. Arkansas
25. Clemson

It will cost Colorado about $3 million to fire Hawkins and the University does not have that kind of money lying around. As for Barnett, there were more problems than just wins and losses.

Now the announcers for ESPN during the Cal-Minn game are going the opposite way that the announcers did during the Raiders-Chargers game. A Cal player made a great 1 handed catch, secured it, took 2-3 steps after coming down, then got hit, hit the ground, and fumbled, and the announcers are arguing that he needs to maintain possession all the way to the ground for it to be a catch. Really, coming down with the ball, taking 4 steps, getting hit, your knee hitting the ground, and then losing it, and the catch isn't completed yet? Thankfully, the refs ruled it a catch.
