Pierre Thomas is out and Saints are big favorites over the Panthers. Steven Jackson is active but may share carries with K Darby. Ladell Betts is starting for the Saints. Some like Ivory better as a goal line back.
Do I pick up and start Ladell Betts over S Jax or Darby?

SJax's situation sounds an awful lot like he'll go for 6-10 carries and a few targets in the 1st half then sit out most of the 2nd. Just my gut. FWIW, I'm benching him.

James, mind if I ask how you watch games over there? My wife is in London for work, stuck in the hotel, which only gets channel 4. The usual sites we can use in the states to get feeds online are all blocked from UK access. Is there a way you know of to watch the games online?
Thanks.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread

The night game's on Channel 4. The earlier slots are broadcasting on SkySports 3, which features possibly the worst studio team ever to cover the sport. Monday Night Football is on ESPN UK.
I'm not aware of any legal way to watch the NFL online in the UK without actually subscribing to Sky Player (the price of which is extortionate) or the NFL GamePass (which is expensive but more worth the cost).

Yeah, her hotel has 4 but not SkySports, and she can't go to a pub. A pub won't have the Colts game anyway, which is what she wants.
Anyone know if the DirecTV online thing works out of the country? Because her family is a sunday ticket subscriber. Or do you need a separate package for that?

I don't know if the DirectTV online thing (which is called NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go) works out of the country. But it is an "extra" to the regular NFL Sunday Ticket package. So you have to subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go to see the games online.

Oh good, it's Pink month.
It amazes me that the NFL is so careful about their brand and all kinds of little nit-picky uniform rules, but then they let teams wear these hideous pink shoes and gloves all month.
The cause is good, but paint the field pink, use pink instead of orange for the markers, and have a patch or armband or something. Everything else just looks godawful.
15
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread

I disagree strongly. I think the highlights look great on most uniforms. Also, the hats the coaches wear.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
by Dave :: Sun, 10/03/2010 - 1:20pm
Well then. You have bad taste.
Seriously, though. It looks fine with some teams, of course, depending on their color schemes. But it's outright awful on others, like the 49ers. Or especially the Seahawks. Pretty gross for both teams in the Superdome right now.
Actually, if I was in charge of Seattle I'd just replace the bright green with the bright pink for a week. There's not much of it in the uniforms, just thin stripes. Then everything would still match (or in other words, actually be uniform)
(Replacing the orange with pink for the Bengals wouldn't make their uniforms any less awful either.)

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread

I really do not like the gaudy pink the teams and refs are wearing. It's just horrible to look at. Breast cancer awareness? How about the NFL does something for animal rights awareness??? That would be far more appropriate.

Denver goes shotgun, empty backfield on a 3rd and 1, but gets bailed out on a questionable roughing the passer penalty. How far are we from seeing a "roughing the passer" called when the QB still has the ball in his hands?
In a Redskins game earlier in the year (either vs Rams or Texans, I can't remember) a Redskins defender got called for unnecessary roughness for tackling the ballcarrier, who had the ball in his hands and was still standing up. Ridiculous!

Sanchez underthrows Braylon Edwards, who has no choice but to stop and let Drayton Florence run into him. Florence really doesn't have any other option, but since he doesn't turn around it's an easy DPI call to put the Jets at the 2.
I won't make the argument that it's not DPI, but it seems like every game there's a call or two like that where a terrible throw gets bailed out. The offense doesn't really deserve those yards. I wish there was a way to stop rewarding bad throws.

Wow, are you sensitive or what?!? I realize that the term is now "illegal forward pass," but for many years it was called "forward lateral." Do you similarly sling terms like "idiot" around when someone calls it "offsides" instead of "encroachment" or "backfield in motion" instead of whatever the hell they're calling it now? Does it give you a warm feeling when they announce "unimpeded to the quarterback"? If you'll notice, the old terminology was clear and fairly 'everyday', while the new phrases are no more descriptive, but are expressed in language that is more grandiloquent. If that is to your taste, you are welcome to it, but to attack someone who slips back into the old phrasing from time to time as an "idiot" seems like a ridiculous overreaction.

At what point do Lions fans drive to NYC and picket the NFL offices?
You can't get jobbed by the refs more than the Lions are @ GB today.
Yes, Detroit has had some foot-shooting dumb penalties, but when Charles Woodson is molesting wideouts and the penalties are 13 vs. 3 it's gone beyond "home field advantage".

Complaining about the ratio of penalties assumes that both teams have in actuality committed about the same amount of penalties. Which of course is not always the case.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread

The Broncos then scored, so Tennessee would get the ball with about 1:30 to go, but they fumbled the kickoff return, so Denver has the ball, up 3, with 1:31 to go.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
by narticus :: Sun, 10/03/2010 - 4:38pm
Special Teams snafus cost the Titans at least two of their first three games last season. Titans ST started the Steelers game this year allowing a kickoff return for a touchdown and then fumbled when the Steelers kicked off - a return TD and ST turnover in a game they only lost by one score. Today, down three with more than a minute-and-a-half, two timeouts, and strong wind at the their back, the Titans had another special teams turnover, costing themselves any real chance of a comeback. How does Alan Lowry still have his job?
147
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
by The Ninjalectual :: Sun, 10/03/2010 - 5:29pm
Special teams didn't cost the Titans the game. The Titans scored on a 98-yard kickoff return where the returner wasn't even touched earlier in the game. Also, the ST turnover at the end of the game was a really tough play on a funny bounce of the ball--I don't think you can fault their coach for that at all. It's just one of those plays, I don't think there was anything they could have done. Their ST looked good overall if you ask me.
If you're looking for someone to blame, I'd put it on their OC Heimerdinger. They had several nice gains in the 1st quarter on misdirection plays where the Broncos entire defense bit--then they proceeded to call ONE misdirection play for the rest of the entire game. Whoever is calling plays for them needs to be sacked immediately, he is not taking advantage of the talent on that offense at all.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread

"....a really tough play on a funny bounce."
You are not supposed to let kickoffs bounce. That's a live ball. Also, it's an oblate spheroid that is not going to take a true bounce in any sense. A good returner catches the ball in the air and never lets it bounce. If the regular return man is too deep, one of the up men is supposed to catch it.
That was absolutely a fail by the Titans' special teams.

Aikman was actually blaming the refs for a delay of game penalty that the Eagles took. And it's not like he referred to the clock or anything. He just said that the refs must have screwed it up. No explanation, no nothing.
I live in the DC area. The locals here despise Aikman and wonder how he gets assigned to pretty much every single Cowboy game on Fox. And when the Cowboys have a bye week, he gets the NFC East matchup between the Eagles and Redskins. We think he hates the Skins more than the Eagles, and needs to find ways to deny that anything good or righteous should go the way of the Redskins.
When the delay of game call was made, we tried to figure out exactly what Aikman was saying. We first thought he was making fun of Reid, who is notorious for bad clock management. But no, to our shock Aikman actually blamed the refs. This is the first time I've ever heard any commentator blame the refs for a delay of game call.
Really, it reminds me of the Geico caveman criticizing the whistle to start the second half.

Red zone turnovers, no big plays, and limiting possessions with long slow drives by both teams. Colts have 6 possessions so far, with 2 touchdown drives (11 plays each), 2 three-and-outs, and 2 drives to the red zone that ended in turnovers (1 fumble by Wayne fighting for the first down, and 1 interception off a dropped/broken up pass).

I don't think the sideline routes were really all that stupid - they DID manage to move the ball up the field more effectively than any of his attempts at longer throws earlier. Especially in the face of a not-bad effort by the Skins secondary.
It's just a pity Kolb couldn't push the ball farther earlier, and that either he or the coaches pissed away a relatively easy TD by trying to read through the works of Proust during a single time out.

It doesn't matter who QB Eagles is; the Redskins will pressure him and destroy the pocket around him, but can't manage to actually bring him down before he scrambles for 10 yards. I guess the difference is Kolb scrambles for 10 where Vick might have scrambled for much more.

How does Avant drop that pass? I mean, I've seen plenty of clutch drops by Eagles receivers over the years, but seriously - he gets an uncontested Hail Mary, and drops it? Ugh.

Are you serious? I mean sure, he got both hands to the ball and could have made the play, but uncontested? That's a ridiculous description of events.
A failed Hail Mary at the end was not the primary reason the Eagles lost that game......

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread

I'm not saying the Eagles deserved to win the game, but given that no Redskins player laid a hand on Avant or the ball, uncontested is a valid description of the play. (Granted, it was a jumping attempt, so going to the ground somebody could have hit him, but nevertheless, he dropped the ball without any direct contact from the defense).

He had two defenders between him and the ball. It sailed between their hands and landed in his, and the only reason THAT happened was a pretty immense stroke of luck on Kolb's part.
Whoever sold the Eagles on the idea that Kevin Kolb was a better fit in the NFL than McNabb had better start polishing their résumé.

Because he had completed the catch and established possession well before he got to the end zone. Once he crossed the plane, the play was over. Johnson hadn't established possession yet.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
by Shattenjager :: Sun, 10/03/2010 - 9:50pm
PFR says 14, but it's from 1952, so I'm not sure how reliable it is.
If you skip that one, the record is 12, which has been done seven times--three times by the Bears. Twice by the Cowboys, too. And, unsurprisingly, the only team to be victim to it twice is the Lions.
So six more sacks - which looks ridiculously possible - and the Giants set a new sack record even if the '52 one is good? And the NFL, as far as I can tell, lists 12 as the max for a game, five times dating back to '66. http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/history/pdfs/Records/A... page 9 or page 17.
So I'm not sure what's official here.
263
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
by Shattenjager :: Sun, 10/03/2010 - 10:16pm
I would bet that the nfl.com stats are official.
Normally, the PFR guys say that they don't have "reliable" sack data before 1969. However, it's also only in the context of measuring the statistics of individual quarterbacks that I remember them saying it. I also don't know what it means to say you don't have "reliable" sack data--does it mean the data is incomplete, or that you get conflicting data, or what?
281
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread

Sacks were not an official stat until ~1963 IIRC.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
by InTheBoilerRoom :: Sun, 10/03/2010 - 9:44pm
Martz is just as responsible for this nonsense as Cutler and the O-line. He needs to stop calling plays having the WRs running routes 20 yards down field. At this point everything should be 3 step drops and short routes. But this is Martz we're talking about...

The Giants have long had the habit of playing down to the opponent's level and letting them hang around in games they should win by double digits.
The 07 NFC title game is a great example. They should've won that game by 2 scores in regulation, but it took the Favre brain fart to hand the game back to them.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Did anybody know that Thomas wasn't going to play? That was news to me, and I left him in my fantasy lineup. Ugh.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
SJax's situation sounds an awful lot like he'll go for 6-10 carries and a few targets in the 1st half then sit out most of the 2nd. Just my gut. FWIW, I'm benching him.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I agree, I'm benching him for the same reasons. Knowing my luck, he'll have 4 TDs this week, but right now he seems too risky to use.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Aw crap. Steeler/Ravens and the Cretin's commentating.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Delightful.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, her hotel has 4 but not SkySports, and she can't go to a pub. A pub won't have the Colts game anyway, which is what she wants.
Anyone know if the DirecTV online thing works out of the country? Because her family is a sunday ticket subscriber. Or do you need a separate package for that?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I don't know if the DirectTV online thing (which is called NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go) works out of the country. But it is an "extra" to the regular NFL Sunday Ticket package. So you have to subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go to see the games online.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Oh good, it's Pink month.
It amazes me that the NFL is so careful about their brand and all kinds of little nit-picky uniform rules, but then they let teams wear these hideous pink shoes and gloves all month.
The cause is good, but paint the field pink, use pink instead of orange for the markers, and have a patch or armband or something. Everything else just looks godawful.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I disagree strongly. I think the highlights look great on most uniforms. Also, the hats the coaches wear.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Maybe because NFL viewers care more about breasts than animals?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Was that a Randle El sighting?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
getting back to actual football... amazing catch by Randle El.
Bad kicking all over so far.
Flacco still looks like he's unwilling to step into his throws. I'd bet money he's nursing some nagging injury.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Denver's o-line is getting DESTROYED by Tennessee's d-line. It's bad.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
So the Seahawks didn't bother to challenge a fumble early in the game that would have given us the ball deep in STL territory but we did challenge whether Hasselbeck threw an incomplete pass before being sacked... a change of all of 3 yards.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Then he wastes another challenge on an interception return. Neither play seems very likely to be overturned.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
The 49ers are up 14-0 thanks to a blocked punt. Time travelers are now going back a few weeks to find out where the hell these people were.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Bradford is having a lot of passes sail on him, and passes when he has the time and pocket to set his feet.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Tennessee's D-coordinator just drew a fine from the league (hopefully), after the TV cameras show him flipping off the refs after they made a good offsides call on his defense.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Denver goes shotgun, empty backfield on a 3rd and 1, but gets bailed out on a questionable roughing the passer penalty. How far are we from seeing a "roughing the passer" called when the QB still has the ball in his hands?
In a Redskins game earlier in the year (either vs Rams or Texans, I can't remember) a Redskins defender got called for unnecessary roughness for tackling the ballcarrier, who had the ball in his hands and was still standing up. Ridiculous!
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Eddie Royal catches a TD from Kyle Orton, proving that Eddie Royal still exists.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
He set up the TD the previous play, taking a quick screen for 16 yards.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Just saw a replay of the Calvin Johnson TD for Detroit. Did anyone else cringe when he tossed the ball in the air in celebration immediately after he caught it? That loos dangerously close to being called incomplete like in week 1.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Astounding pass blocking and pocket awareness by Pittsburgh and Charles Batch. An excellent execution for "Football Follies".

On third and a short one, the Hawks just ran a picture perfect halfback option. Gutsy call but it worked.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
...and then there was a fake FG that didn't even come close.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Seahawks-Rams has been really fun from a aggression standpoint. Three 4th down attempts so far, the last one being a fake field goal.
Sadly none of them have converted: dropped pass, penalty, and no one was tricked by the fake FG.

Denver inexplicably calls a timeout with 28 seconds left in the half before kicking a field goal... why would they do that without letting the clock run down? They handed Tennessee 3 free points for no reason. Mind-boggling.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Fail time management by the Rams there. Should have called the TO immediately and taken a shot at the endzone.
Actually, they should have taken 2 shots and not thrown a 9 yard crossing route.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Green Bay's Defense has turned Shaun Hill into Peyton Manning
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Shaun Hill actually interests me less than what this might mean about Cutler. Or maybe the GB D is having a bad day.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
It probably means the Lion's offensive line is better than the Bear's.
That or the Green Bay coaches instructed their corners to stop grabbing receivers who beat them.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Must be this is a crew that actually calls things like DPI.
I have that game on without sound in a second screen. It looks to me like Hill just has a lot of time to let guys get open.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
The crew on Monday night did a fine job calling DPI, the Packers just kept committing it, and kept getting caught.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
True.
I guess they didn't want to risk a repeat of that this week so they backed off?
The plays I've noticed have been zones, actually. I don't see any CBs just getting outright beat man to man. (But again, not really paying attention.)

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
That was a weird unsportsmanlike contact call on the Rams receiver I can't spell.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I've actually seen that before. You are not allowed to spike the ball after a non-TD play.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Sanchez underthrows Braylon Edwards, who has no choice but to stop and let Drayton Florence run into him. Florence really doesn't have any other option, but since he doesn't turn around it's an easy DPI call to put the Jets at the 2.
I won't make the argument that it's not DPI, but it seems like every game there's a call or two like that where a terrible throw gets bailed out. The offense doesn't really deserve those yards. I wish there was a way to stop rewarding bad throws.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Thank God I'm watching the games in mute; which game was that?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Lions-Packers.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
And besides, "Backfield in Motion" was a cool song. Try to write one as good that's called "False Start Before the Snap."

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Said backbreaking turnover being a Matty Ice interception, only for the interceptor to fumble it. Atlanta better thank Tebow for their second chance.

You can't get jobbed by the refs more than the Lions are @ GB today.
Yes, Detroit has had some foot-shooting dumb penalties, but when Charles Woodson is molesting wideouts and the penalties are 13 vs. 3 it's gone beyond "home field advantage".
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Complaining about the ratio of penalties assumes that both teams have in actuality committed about the same amount of penalties. Which of course is not always the case.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
i was wondering the same thing. i think this was within the final 2:00, so it should have been a booth review. ravens maybe get another apology this week. the officiating wasn't great in the game, but at least it didn't favor any one side.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Panthers try to run to set up a shorter FG and lose yards.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Then Clausen gets sacked. So anti-climatic.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
And then takes forever to get that play off, even if it was complete the game was over.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
What the hell were the Panthers doing? Even if that pass were completed, the clock would have run out before they could have lined up for another play or a field goal attempt.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
When did Les Miles take over the Panthers?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
And Tennessee probably just lost the game on a 49-yd DPI call to put the Broncos at the 1. Denver needs a TD, but assuming they score Titans won't have time to.
Special Teams snafus cost the Titans at least two of their first three games last season. Titans ST started the Steelers game this year allowing a kickoff return for a touchdown and then fumbled when the Steelers kicked off - a return TD and ST turnover in a game they only lost by one score. Today, down three with more than a minute-and-a-half, two timeouts, and strong wind at the their back, the Titans had another special teams turnover, costing themselves any real chance of a comeback. How does Alan Lowry still have his job?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
The 49ers are not in the running there. There are a good handful of teams that are clearly worse. (Lions, Bills, Raiders... ok, at least three.)
The 49ers have a solid defense but they really suffer on offense from having an inadequate QB.

Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Eagles are demonstrating their 2 minute prowess.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Apparently it takes Kolb 15 second to run from the sideline to the huddle.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I love how the announcers spent ten minutes lambasting the officials and making up gross miscarriages of the playclock, until they realized the Eagles just hadn't bothered to get back to the line.
This was an eminently winnable game. Andy Reid - who I respect immensely otherwise - needs to have his mom pin a stopwatch to his lapel before he leaves the house on gameday.

. accidental double post.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Aikman and Buck don't like a call at the end of the 2nd quarter, and Fox brings in Mike Pereira who explains that the refs actually did call it correctly. After halftime, Aikman and Buck are STILL talking about how they don't understand the call! Ugh. Those two are just stupid.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
The next time Pereira says the refs were wrong will be the first.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Robert Morse in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying..." Pereira does it the company way...
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
100% agreed about Aikman. I absolutely abhor FOX for torturing us like this. And Aikman does seem to hate the Redskins, more than the Eagles or anyone else, yet Fox continues to stick him in there...
On the bright side, their "A" camera team did get some really nice shots tonight.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Can anyonwe explain what the Jaguars are doing to limit Manning? Vick was cutting that defense up not long time ago...
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Red zone turnovers, no big plays, and limiting possessions with long slow drives by both teams. Colts have 6 possessions so far, with 2 touchdown drives (11 plays each), 2 three-and-outs, and 2 drives to the red zone that ended in turnovers (1 fumble by Wayne fighting for the first down, and 1 interception off a dropped/broken up pass).
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Not drafting a defensive end in the first round if the NFL Draft works wonders...
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Hmm... D. Anderson benched. Max Hall in for the Cards.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
*Checks pulse*
For some reason, I am not shocked at this turn of events.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
If there was any chance of another QB controversy this week in Philly, Kevin Kolb is putting it to rest. Only injury will keep Vick out next week.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Kolb scrambles on third down, gets hit from behind, fumbles (eagles recovers). Boo bird at the Linc.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Manning sure was lucky to not throw his 2nd INT
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I just got home. Why is Kolb in for the Eagles?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Cuz the dummies traded McNabb.
Or did you want "Vick hurt, shoulder"?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I forgot to specify, I just got home today, not I just got home after waking up from a year-long coma. Thanks for the explanation that covers both possibilities.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Actually, I may by wrong about the shoulder. If someone else says something different believe them and not me.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Vick injury - rib and chest.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Reid decided to go with a short, ineffectual passing game. Kolb is executing it perfectly.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I don't think the sideline routes were really all that stupid - they DID manage to move the ball up the field more effectively than any of his attempts at longer throws earlier. Especially in the face of a not-bad effort by the Skins secondary.
It's just a pity Kolb couldn't push the ball farther earlier, and that either he or the coaches pissed away a relatively easy TD by trying to read through the works of Proust during a single time out.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
It doesn't matter who QB Eagles is; the Redskins will pressure him and destroy the pocket around him, but can't manage to actually bring him down before he scrambles for 10 yards. I guess the difference is Kolb scrambles for 10 where Vick might have scrambled for much more.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Wow a 59 yard game winnrer
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
59 yard field goal!
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
That false start is absolutely unforgiveable
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Carlos Rogers drops a game-clinching interception. Raise your hand if you're surprised.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Not only does Mike Shanahan get a win, but it has to end with the ball in DeAngelo Hall's hands? Boo.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I almost had a heart attack as an Eagles receiver gets both hands on a hail-mary in the end zone, but can't hold on. Thank goodness--that was too close.
The Redskins now own first place in the NFC East!
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
How does Avant drop that pass? I mean, I've seen plenty of clutch drops by Eagles receivers over the years, but seriously - he gets an uncontested Hail Mary, and drops it? Ugh.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
He had two defenders between him and the ball. It sailed between their hands and landed in his, and the only reason THAT happened was a pretty immense stroke of luck on Kolb's part.
Whoever sold the Eagles on the idea that Kevin Kolb was a better fit in the NFL than McNabb had better start polishing their résumé.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
We have now confirmed why Kevin Kolb got canned.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Maybe I've missed the explanation. But why was Woodson's interception where he dove into the endzone, hit the group and the ball popped out ruled OK, but Calvin Johnson's endzone catch in week 1 ruled no good?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Because he had completed the catch and established possession well before he got to the end zone. Once he crossed the plane, the play was over. Johnson hadn't established possession yet.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I mean hit the ground of course
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Awesome misadventures in punting in New Jersey.
And does Jay Cutler get danger money? Because that O-line is rubbish
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Wow, it's quiet around here. Cutler just threw a terrific WTF? pick
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
The Second Coming of Favre continues.
(Note: I typed this in the wrong window at first and it would have made no sense to anyone here as I first wrote it. I decided to clarify instead of just deleting it.)
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Are the Bears going to have every ball bounce straight to them this year?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Cutler is trying to make Derek Anderson and Kevin Kolb look downright competent in comparison.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Although to be honest the worst thing about this game isn't Cutler, it's the fact that the Giants only have 3 points.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
The Bears are making the Giants defense look like a Giants defense. Which is new this year.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I don't have access to a TV, but the play-by-play says Cutler fumbled on three consecutive dropbacks?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Apparently he thinks he can hold the ball for 9 seconds per drop.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Every play he is being blind sided by the Giants D Line
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
If Cutler leaves the Meadowlands alive I'll be very impressed.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
If the Giant's punter makes it out alive I'll be impressed
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Awesome quote by Seubert.
Michaels joked about the changing pronunciation of his name, saying if he got a penalty or did something bad it'd be pronounced a different way. Seubert answered "if I get a penalty, call me Chris Snee."
Preposterous punt. 14 net yards. The Giants should be ahead by 17 or more in this game, but they're leaving the Bears in it. Not good.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Maybe I scared everyone off of posting tonight ;)
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
OK, my viewing experience and knowledge of football is enhanced by "night vision" how, exactly?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
For the love of god why won't this idiot throw the ball?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Because if he threw the ball every time he got sacked he would 4 INTs instead of 8 sacks.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
double post
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
OK, I get the fact that the Bears have a bad line, but Cutler, really needs to get rid of the ball. Seven sacks, and it's not half-time yet, and at least 3 of them were on Cutler.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I would say 5 are on Cutler.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Bears O giving the game to the Giants; Giant's O trying to give it back.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
That looked like either a legit incomplete pass or a tuck rule at worst.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Great from Cris Collinsworth:
"someone put a tent over this circus"
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Manning fumble, Cutler sack. Sheesh.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Off the top of my head, I think the record for sacks in a game is 12 by the Bears against the Lions in the last game of the 1984 season. The Giants are going to obliterate that record (and Jay Cutler) tonight.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I think we just ended a sequence of six Cutler sacks in six Cutler dropbacks...
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
By halftime if the Bears get the ball back...
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
PFR says 14, but it's from 1952, so I'm not sure how reliable it is.
If you skip that one, the record is 12, which has been done seven times--three times by the Bears. Twice by the Cowboys, too. And, unsurprisingly, the only team to be victim to it twice is the Lions.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/tiny/6MeEU
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
So six more sacks - which looks ridiculously possible - and the Giants set a new sack record even if the '52 one is good? And the NFL, as far as I can tell, lists 12 as the max for a game, five times dating back to '66. http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/history/pdfs/Records/A... page 9 or page 17.
So I'm not sure what's official here.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I would bet that the nfl.com stats are official.
Normally, the PFR guys say that they don't have "reliable" sack data before 1969. However, it's also only in the context of measuring the statistics of individual quarterbacks that I remember them saying it. I also don't know what it means to say you don't have "reliable" sack data--does it mean the data is incomplete, or that you get conflicting data, or what?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Sacks were not an official stat until ~1963 IIRC.
They were measured before but like other unofficial stats, with poor consistency and some missing data.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Much later than that - 1982.
Legend has it that Deacon Jones would clearly hold the sack record if anybody had been counting during his career.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Team sacks were a tracked statistic well before sacks for individual players, IIRC.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
This is starting to remind me of the 12-sack game the Giants pitched against the Eagles in 2007 (?). Ay carumba - Winston Justice was like a turnstile out there.
ETA: Yep, 2007. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/21072362/
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
apparently that last play before the punt became sack #9. Hilarious.
What's the record for sacks in a half?
Quick, Eli, turn the ball over so they can hit Cutler some more.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
While you can't see the coverage from the TV, I fail to believe that no-one is open on any of these plays. -9 passing yards and 9 sacks is awesome. If Cutler can't throw, who's on the bench?
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
That would be Todd Collins on the Bears' bench. I'm not entirely sure that would improve things.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
EDIT: Todd Collins, according to the actual depth chart. I guess Caleb Hanie got demoted.
I watched Hanie play in college at Colorado State, and never would have guessed he would be an NFL prospect. Shows what I know, I guess.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Hanie looks really good every preseason, and Mel Kiper was in love with him for whatever that's worth.
He got demoted because he got hurt this year and they didn't have a chance to evaluate him with the new offense.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
How about a some first down runs. And if Cutler can't bring himself to throw the ball away before running out of bounds in the backfield, how about benching him. I feel like I'm watching Henry Burris again.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Are all these sacks due somewhat to the constant vertical routes? Does the Martz playbook not include any mid-range crossing stuff?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
If the Bears are going to win this game, it looks like it will take a defensive or special teams TD. Maybe both. We know the Bears can do this and have done this before in prime time - when the Bears were who we thought they were. Will the Giants let 'em off the hook?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Martz is just as responsible for this nonsense as Cutler and the O-line. He needs to stop calling plays having the WRs running routes 20 yards down field. At this point everything should be 3 step drops and short routes. But this is Martz we're talking about...
Pretty much everyone associated with the offense is responsible for this stupidity.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Martz called a godawful game.
Long after it was established that the Bears could not give more than 2 seconds of pass protection, and long before the game was out of reach, Martz continued to push the same button: pass, pass, pass, pass, pass.
Matt Forte? Ignored.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Bears get it back inside thier own 10. If the Giants get this right, they'll break the sack record AND get the safety
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
A short route? And a completion? To a tight end? I think maybe Lovie decided to take over the offense.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Martz just staged a coup. sack number 9 follows the first down.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Nevermind, sack #9. I don't have anything to say any more.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Okay, is that 9 or 10?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
9. They scratched one off
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
This is just terrible. I think I could protect Cutler better, and I'm 5'3" and weigh about 119 lbs. Good lord.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Not if Cutler keeps refusing to throw the ball you couldn't
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
True.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I'm 6'4' and 180 pounds, and I think I could've gotten a sack on Cutler.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Officially #9, the last #9 got marked down as incomplete eventually.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Well the good thing about all the sacks is that now the Giants are just looking for Cutler - so the running game's getting working, ish.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I have no idea how the Bears aren't already beaten. 3-0 is a travesty
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I'm still trying to get the horrible taste of that Eagles game out of my mouth. Although I was happy that McNabb played okay - not his best game, but he definitely didn't need to bring his "A" game today.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
The Giants have long had the habit of playing down to the opponent's level and letting them hang around in games they should win by double digits.
The 07 NFC title game is a great example. They should've won that game by 2 scores in regulation, but it took the Favre brain fart to hand the game back to them.
Whoops, this was a reply to James.
At least this time it isn't stupid penalties prolonging drives and leading to points.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Whoa--Collins taking over. I have to admit, this development does surprise me.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Collins is in, and while part of me just feels bad for Cutler, part of me is hoping he threw a world-class hissy fit and refused to play the second half, sparking a massive controversy and fun as hell headlines here in Chicago.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Commentators saying Cutler is officially out for now, possible/probable concussion.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
3 & out for the Giants, and no Cutler. Is he hurt, or like Achilles, skulking in his tent?
EDIT: Concussion for Culter. Anyone else thinks he's lucky it's not worse?
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Concussion, apparently, and now a limited playbook for the confused as hell Collins. Looks like no amount of bad Eli can cost them this game. 3 points will likely be enough.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
If this game ends 3-0 that will be horrible. There's no excuse for it. At least the last 3-0 game happened in a hurricane!
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
As I said above, the Bears may have to win this game with a defensive or special teams TD. So some amount of bad Eli could cost the Giants if he throws a pick 6.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Todd Collins, the best drink named NFL quarterback since the White Russian.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
The drink is a Tom Collins. Gin, soda water, sugar, lemon.
However a Redskins fan apparently called his bourbon and ginger ale a Todd Collins.
So the Todd Collins was inspired by confusion over Todd Collins and Tom Collins.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
With Collins in, the Bears offense is suddenly looking competent. Not good - they still can't get a 1st down - but competent. Competent in a might-get-a-FG-eventually way. Is Cutler that bad? But he'd actually been looking okay this year. So I'm just really confused.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I'm fairly certain its because Cutler had too much confidence at the beginning of the game and got sacked alot. Then after getting sacked alot he had too much hot feet and didn't look downfield enough.
Also the Giants DLine is probably getting tired.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
It looks like Collins isn't using a mouthpiece. Is that even legal? Let alone, impossibly stupid in a game where the other team sacked your QB nine times in the first half?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
What's the book on Jacobs going ballistic tonight?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Maybe he'll throw Tom Coughlin into the stands.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Ok Chicago, the good news is your defense got a turnover. The bad news is now you have Todd Collins starting a drive on your 1 yard line.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
What a god awful throw by Eli and great play by Nicks to set up that clinching touchdown.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I went to school right by Caleb Hanie for at least a little while (I graduated in 2006). Since him succeeding would funnel football players over to CSU instead, I will root for him.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I graduated from Colorado State in 2005! Pleased to meet you, sir.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Interesting! My best friend went to CSU. He graduated in 2009, but he actually started in 2003, so he would have been there.
I realize my comment could have meant several schools--I went to CU.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
My brother and girlfriend both graduated from CU in '06 and '07, so I feel no animosity toward Boulder at all. In fact it bothers me to see so many people from either school actually disliking the other town/school/football team. I feel the Buffs are my home team too, and I root for them in all their games except the one vs. CSU every year. The Mile High Showdown is one of my favorite football games, but I wonder if some fans take the shit talking too seriously and forget that we're all friends after it's over... so I'm glad to see someone else hoping Hanie gets a shot in the NFL.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I honestly hate college football (long explanation that I don't have time for), so I never got into the animosity.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
GOOD JOB CALEB
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
I think we need an injury countdown sometime this week. I have completely lost track of the high ankle sprains, concussions and knee injuries to key football players.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
The joys of being a Bears fan are endless.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Gotta love it when the camera pans to a coach after his team gives up points- good shot of Belichick mouthing "god-dammit" after Bess scored.
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Apparently the Patriots are trying to test Mike Reiss's run to win theory. If they have 20 runs in the first half, that's like a guaranteed victory, right?
Re: Week 4 Open Discussion Thread
Just tuned in to the 2nd quarter of the Pats-Dolphins game. Seems like the Pats read today's article about running the ball. They are running and running and running. We're close to halftime and neither Welker nor Moss has even been targeted yet.
I do wish the offense would be a bit less schizo.
