My pleasure Bill, cheers! (about 90 second response time as well, that's impressive...)

Please stop playing like shit, Carolina. Also, boo Judas Peppers!

For the early games I get to choose between TB-Cin and Jax-Buf. And my Steelers are on a bye or I would be at a sports bar in a heartbeat.

...so much for the ST improvement.

And, that's about the worst possible way to open the game.

Red Zone channel is awesome.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Broncos sack Flacco for 14 yards on 4th and goal at the 1. Game still scoreless.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

And our brilliant OC game non-planning continues.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Panthers just ran on their last two 3rd and longs. Not draws either, but i-form, line up and hand off. It worked the first time, but not the 2nd.

I believe their first drive consisted entirely of running plays.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Wow. Forte looks really good. What's with the Panthers?

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Darius Reynaud should be banned from returning punts, after missing the fair catch.

11
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by Shattenjager :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:26pm

The Chiefs opened the game with an unsuccessful onside kick try and now, with the game scoreless and a little over two minutes to go in the first quarter, they are going for it on 4th and 2 on the Indianapolis 8.

Dierdorf was shockingly not horrified by the latter.

14
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

The fourth down didn't work, either.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by zlionsfan :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:26pm

Missouri teams starting off with onside kicks: both St. Louis and Kansas City attempt them, neither was successful.

Mark Clayton going off on a stretcher in the Detroit-St. Louis game. Steven Jackson just wept.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by Micranot (not verified) :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:27pm

Chiefs try an onside kick to start the game which fails, Colts drive and get a FG. Next Chief's possession they march down inside the 10, have 4th and goal from about the 2, go for it and fail again.

25
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by Pat Swinnegan :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:39pm

I think it was more like 4th down from the 7, which just makes going for it an even more absurd call.

27
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by Shattenjager :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:42pm

4th and 2 from the 8.

16
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by TheConfessor :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:29pm

Colts being very patient against a soft deep safeties shell, only 2 passes so far and picking up gobs of yardage on the ground.

17
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Ninjalectual :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:30pm

Jermichael Finley in the locker room, injured making a tackle after a fumble. Backup Donald Lee injures himself celebrating a touchdown. Packers 3rd string TE looks equally effective so far.

TD came on the simple "run to the front of the end zone and turn around" route.

Go, Carolina Bills. or something.

19
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Schaub throws a pick to Corey Webster, looking for Kevin Walter in double coverage.

20
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by tuluse :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:33pm

Both the Bears and the Panthers should be running the wildcat or something like it. Both these QBs are useless. Get another blocker out there.

Or the Bears could try Hanie who has the potential to not suck.

21
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Ninjalectual :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:35pm

Uh oh. McNabb looks to be having one of his bad games, or "Eli games," ridiculously overthrowing open receivers by eight yards or more.

24
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Human Spider :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:38pm

Oh yeah, that's why Philly traded McNabb...

With recent revelations in the sporting world in general, including blood doping in bicycle racing, steroids in baseball and Brian Cushings recent suspension, I can only conclude Clay Matthews is on some kind PED.

Or he is the son of Zeus. I do not know which.

51
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Human Spider :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 2:27pm

It could also be the Matthews family pedigree. That's just a guess, though.

58
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

I'm going with son of Zeus.

SON OF ZEUS! BY THE POWER OF ASGARD!

Idonije just got a sack where the Panthers double teamed Tommie Harris of all players.

23
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Human Spider :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:36pm

Hakeem Nicks has been looking good. The short pass he caught to set up Brandon Jacobs' touchdown was a thing of beauty.

28
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by tuluse :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 1:42pm

This Bears game is a blowout in the first quarter. About to be 24-3. The Panthers look terrible at everything that isn't running the ball.

Edit: The TD is getting challenged. It looks good to me, but it probably won't matter with how the Panthers are playing. 4 QB sneaks should get it in if they change the ruling.

Double Edit: They changed the ruling to no TD, and Lovie is challenging that it was a TD. Ruling upheld, no TD.

I am in the Bay Area, I have Comcast, and am supposed to be getting Green Bay-Washington on Fox, but all I have is a blank screen on Fox, and there is no game on CBS. Anyone else having this problem?

29

You're probably getting two games later.

40
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Just called Comcast. They are having "technical difficulties" with KTVU (Fox) at this time in my area, and they are working on it. Meanwhile every other channel works, but no football is on for me. This is torture.

The Houston Texans refuse to cover Hakeem Nicks.

And Carson Palmer throws a pick-six to Cody Grimm...

33

And then Todd Collins with plenty of time, throws a pick to a defensive lineman.

34

Hakeem Nicks scores his second TD of the day. The Texans' refusal to cover Nicks continues...

Phillip Buchanon gets smoked in a deep zone coverage because he lost track of the receiver, and Troy Aikman gives his $.02 saying, "Buchanon plays it pretty well." Uh no. What kind of sick sadistic f^&% assigns Troy Aikman to broadcast Redskins games anyway?

37
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

50
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

43
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Ninjalectual :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 2:13pm

Are you FireOmarTomlin? You're not as bad as he is, but you both like to post reactions without sufficient explanation. Why go through the trouble to post something if you're not going to explain what happened?

48
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by montanapanthersfan :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 2:19pm

The reason I'd like Jeff Otah to play is due to the fact that Geoff Schwartz was penciled in to be our starting RG. Since Otah had knee surgery and is out, he's now playing RT at a Kwame Harris level. Our backup center is starting at Right Guard, and is playing just as horribly. These two factors combine to mean that our entire right side of the offensive line is awful, and it often affects the left side as well. And even Jordan Gross (left tackle) has been declining since last year.

48
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Ninjalectual :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 2:19pm

McNabb has had no protection so far, Packers running right by Redskin o-linemen, even without blitzing. They've gotten to him before he can even set up in a 5-step drop. It looks bad so far. He's been extremely elusive so far though, only getting sacked half the time and extending plays.

52

I'd guess it's because the link here is in an Extra Point format, which always opens a new tab for convenience (so you still have the comments on FO open with the article in question) and it just hasn't been rewired for discussion threads on site. I don't actually know anything.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Since 1978 rules changes, the lowest single-game combined passing totals: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/tiny/wjLXQ

The two lowest were in 1978 and third was in 1979. The lowest since then was Jets-Bengals last year at 63 yards.

btw, this lists every game twice for some reason. I'm not sure how to make it not do that.

Colts dodge a bullet after a terrible Manning pick sets the Chiefs up at the Colt's 30, three and out after the first throw was what looked to be a touchdown dropped by the receiver (tough catch).

69
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Peyton Manning threw an interception straight to Jon McGraw.

The Chiefs ended up making a 43-yard field goal and the game is tied.

70
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by Danish Denver-Fan :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 3:04pm

Baltimore copying Peyton Mannings gameplan: Avoid Bailey (Boldin) and pick on Parrish Cox (Housh, Mason). It's working fairly well - Broncos hanging around, though.

I actually like this situation - it keeps McD from handing off to Maroney.

In the beginning of the second half - Orton is getting loads of time, despite the abcense of the runninggame. In the first half it was complete opposite: McD forcing the run and Orton getting herrased.

Fouts tries to coin a new nickname: Fearsome Foursome - regarding Lloyd-Royal-Thomas-Gaffney. Really, Dan?

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

I don't know what to make of the fact that Detroit is currently blowing somebody out of the water. This is a new and bizarre experience for me, which long distrust of the franchise leads to suspect can only end in an epic meltdown.

Sincerely,
This (and every other) Lions fan

PS. I suppose it might be a sign we're finally getting better... but I'm dubious.

75
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Ninjalectual :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 3:11pm

You must be deeply traumatized by so many years of Millen! No, the Lions are truly getting better. Schwartz has done an excellent job building a team out there. Look at their defense: replace C.C. Brown, add a linebacker and another DE, and you've got yourself a playoff team!

79
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Human Spider :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 3:16pm

Replace Detroit with New York and Lions with Giants, and you have a good idea of how Giants fans are feeling after Eli's (second) interception leads to a Houston touchdown.

109
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

As a matter of fact, there's no need to worry, as both teams put away their respective games.

74
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Ninjalectual :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 3:08pm

Jermichael Finley is standing on the sideline on crutches, in green sweat pants and a tee shirt. Yet they keep saying his return to the game is "questionable." There is nothing "questionable" about it, he's OUT! The NFL injury reporting system is a farce.

76
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Ravens stuffing it down Broncos' throats. Broncos selfdestructs: 9 penailties (3 holds, 1 DPI) with 4 minutes to go in the 3rd. The three holdings have wiped out about 50 yards of Eddie Royal gains.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

87
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by Gus (not verified) :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 3:27pm

Right, but Orton's two good drives have come against an inexplicably soft zone at half, and now one down by 17 points. I don't think FO stats will be particularly impressed even though he's had a decent day considering the defense.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

If his knee isn't creaking, he'll be back to his 2009 self. Which is good because Bmore might realize that giving carries to McGahee in short yardage is not necessary.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Do the Packers play with different PI rules than anyone else? That's THREE Redskin drives now that have been ended due to uncalled pass interference on the Packers. This is more than just regular ref crew inconsistency--this is as bad as the way they don't call traveling in basketball. On the most recent penalty, a flag was thrown, but another ref talked the crew out of making the right call.

Yes, the Redskins need to play better in several areas to win the game. But at what point do we legitimately blame the refs for blowing this game? It's just not fair the way they're calling it.

108
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by The Ninjalectual :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 4:08pm

FOUR drives now ended on uncalled PI. Thank goodness Graham Gano made a 45yd FG to tie it at 13 with a minute left, but it would have been a first down if Santana Moss wasn't getting tackled before he had a chance to catch the football. If the Redskins lose this game it's safe to blame the refs as much as anything the 'Skins did.

113
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by tuluse :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 4:13pm

It's not different rules, they just grab receivers every play and hope they don't get seen or the refs get tired of throwing flags.

Trent Williams: When you get the interception with the game tied and a second left, you go down IMMEDIATELY after you catch the ball. You do NOT try to be the hero by trying to make it a pick-six.

Yeah. I say you go for hero in that situation. Just make sure you hold onto the ball.

The chances of you fumbling and it getting returned for a TD have to lower than 50%, which is the chance the other team gets the ball.

WAS vs GB in OT. McNabb threw up a hail mary with 1 second left that was returned to the WAS 30 yard line. Also, Trent Williams went down on the play, which is not good for WAS pass protection. And GB won the toss.

McNabb looks like he wishes he was back in Philly, but I am not sure the Eagles O-line is any better...

My situation: I panicked about Green Bay's D (should have known better by now) and tried to play matchups by starting Todd Collins instead (since the Panthers are terrible). I have a huge lead anyway (I have no idea how this worked out), but McNabb would have iced it, whereas now it's Philip Rivers (opponent's QB) vs my huge lead. I think my lead's probably going to lose that one.

For those who are counting:
- Two blocked punts (one through the endzone for a safety, one recovered for a touchdown).
- One kick out of bounds.
- Two fumbles recovered by the defense.

75% of Oakland's points occurred on plays which began with San Diego in possession of the ball, and the other 25% came on a short drive after a San Diego mistake. Crazy.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Packers lose a game they should have won easily given their dominance of the first half. I remember watching them go for 4th and goal in the first quarter, when they were already up 7-0, and thinking to myself "Is there something wrong with a 10 point lead?" Few things give life to a team on the ropes better than a successful goal line stand.

Especially after they had been stopped short on 2nd and goal and 3rd and goal from inside the 5, it seemed like all they were doing was building up the Redskins' confidence. It really seems to me that teams that cannot get 1 yard on 3rd and goal from the 1 rarely get that yard on 4th down.

Good comeback by the Redskins, who had no rushing game at all. Big-time choke by the Packers, who again look like something less than a Super Bowl team.

Griffin intercepts Romo in the endzone. He gets up, runs ob at around the 15 yard line. This prompts Jeff Fisher to challenge the call on the field - he thinks Griffin was down by contact in the endzone. He's risking a TO on a five yard gain. completely irrelevant.

He gets his five yards, though.

If someone from the Titans' booth upstairs saw a replay that showed Griffin was clearly down, then Fisher isn't risking a timeout for five yards -- he's just exchanging a challenge for a virtually-guaranteed five yards, fairly deep in your own end of the field, in a tie game. Unless that's your last challenge for the game -- and I can't remember whether it's the Titans' last challenge or not -- I think the challenge makes plenty of sense.

I still disagree. The challenge alone, even if it's their first, is worth more than 5 yards of field position. If they miss their second challenge, they are out. 5 yards are pretty easy to pick up in that area of the field.

How often do teams run out of challenges and have it come back to haunt them?

In order for it to hurt Tennessee, they would have to

(a) Challenge again;
(b) Lose that next challenge;
(c) Be presented with a situation where a challenge would offer positive value with more than two minutes remaining.

The average value lost in that situation, multiplied by the probability of that chain of events occurring, has to exceed the value of the five yards Tennessee gained in order for Fisher to be losing value by challenging. I'm not sure it does -- and if it does I doubt the difference is enough to definitively state Fisher made a poor decision.

The Cardinals suck, right? At least, we're all fairly certain they're not *good*, their personnel compared to last year has been gutted, and they've had a couple embarrassing losses.

So I'm now trying to figure out which (or how many) of the following is true:
1) Whisenhunt is a genius and any and all success this squad has had is solely and entirely his responsibility (but he/his front office sucks at evaluating talent);
2) The NFL is one weird place;
3) The Cards have had a crazily easy schedule;
4) The NFC West sucks (accounts for ...one win?)

I just don't know what to think right now. Hopefully Brees puts up some more points and we don't have to deal with a 3-2 Cards team.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by Jonadan :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 7:13pm

Or, you know, Brees could turn into Favre for a bit. That works too.

I still don't know what to make of the Cardinals. They're clearly better than the 49ers just on the fact they've succeeded some; Seattle's in full Jekyll-and-Hyde mode; the Rams - whom I was preparing to crown already - got killed by my (almost equally rebuilding) Lions today. Which makes Arizona the class of the division, I guess. And they're about the 5th-worst team in the league.

Pittsburgh, for one. But seriously, what's more to the point of the toughness of the Niners' schedule is the fact that the two weak teams, Seattle and KC (though the Chiefs are nobody's easy game this year) both basically blew them out of the stadium. The Oakland game is looking like a toss-up at this point, which means that they could very easily be 1-7 at the bye, and the non-divisional games in the back half of the schedule (San Diego and the Bays...hm, that could be a 80s girl group...) aren't going to be easy. Mind you, 7-9 might still win the NFC West.

This is kind of fantastic. I'm watching via feed from Sweden (I had no idea!), and they're not showing the snazzy half-time show but just raw feed of what the guys in studio are looking at and talking about. The last minute was literally some guy just running footage from a couple plays (including the Niners' fumble) and talking about whether or not the guy was down. Cut with shots and sounds of the band out on the field. I could do this every single game.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

As Akers most recent attempt demonstrated, a 48-49 yd field goal is no guarantee, and it's not at all unreasonable to expect the team to convert 4th and 1. Moreover, Celek had a step on the defender - the pass was thrown behind him, allowing the defender to intervene (and he still had a decent chance of catching it).

Personally, I would have preferred if he had gone for it on the 4th and 2 (3?) instead of the second FG attempt.

235
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by ChaosOnion (not verified) :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 10:58pm

Capable. He is making reads, going through progressions and being very consistent. He has also made a couple plays with his legs and escaped pressure a few times. He has been sacked more than I would like, but Dunlap is in for Peters, so it is a bit out of his control. The Eagles started bringing the back over to chip the rusher on that side.

236
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by agauntpanda :: Sun, 10/10/2010 - 11:00pm

No chance he gets the job back unless he turns into Peyton Manning, I suppose. At least he's making Reid look he has a reasonable idea of what he is doing.

244
Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by ChaosOnion (not verified) :: Mon, 10/11/2010 - 9:19am

On the first Eagles drive, Kolb displayed every characteristic extolled by Andy Reid and the Kolb-heads. He was accurate, decisive and escape-y (ooph.) If he had been firey, Philadelphia would have a collective instance of euphoria and would riot if/when Reid puts Vick back in as the starter.

Depending upon the starter, the offense is very different. There is the obvious, lefty versus righty, arm strength and foot speed. Collinsworth was the first commentator I heard declare how difficult it is for an offense to adjust from a left to right handed QB mid-game. I do not know how difficult it is, but Collinsworth is one of the more astute commentators.

Vick and Kolb can hit deep throws, but Vick has one of the strongest arms in the NFL. You can see it even on the intermediate throws. Kolb can still hit the long ball from time to time (I think he overthrew someone,) but his strength is accuracy in the intermediate game. While Vick has been very fortunate to not have some passes picked off, Kolb did not throw one pass that made me nervous.

Vick is Vick and defenses still need to assign a spy, unless they just blitz man-god Clay Matthews every down. A man who could run down the sun! His scrambling ability is a constant threat that has not been diminished with his new found penchant to set his legs and throw. On the first TD throw to Celek, Kolb showed Manning-esque poise and escapability to get away from rushers and get the scramble drill started. While Celek caught the TD, his blown block caused the pressure.

The Kolb offense is very consistent. The big play is available, but you are more likely to get a string of first downs. Kolb did extend one drive with his legs, but he is more apt to do it with his arm. There was an opportunity for the Eagles to run a two minute drill. They scored in 3 plays and took barely any time off the clock. The offense also only scored a FG in the second half.

The Vick offense feels discontinuous, boom or bust. There are equal chances to sustain a drive, stall out on the 40 or score on a big play. I think the Vick offense looks and feels like the McNabb. With Vick, you can score a TD at any time, from anywhere and against anyone. There is also the chance of catastrophic failure with an errant Vick throw or death by suffocation if a defense can force it to work down the field.

Just my thoughts from my very untrained eye.

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread
by Shattenjager :: Mon, 10/11/2010 - 7:16pm

Collinsworth also was a WR who went through a transition from a righty* (Ken Anderson) to a lefty (Boomer Esiason).

I thought blocking the receiving team into the football caused it to be live... Haven't there been a number of turnovers in which a punt falls short, and an actively engaged blocker (from the receiving team) has it bounce off his leg into the arms of a coverage player? Or was it due to the fair catch being interfered by the block?

Re: Week 5 Open Discussion Thread

Had to look it up:
http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/forwardpass

Forward Pass

1. A forward pass may be touched or caught by any eligible receiver. All members of the defensive team are eligible. Eligible receivers on the offensive team are players on either end of line (other than center, guard, or tackle) or players at least one yard behind the line at the snap. A T-formation quarterback is not eligible to receive a forward pass during a play from scrimmage.

Exception: T-formation quarterback becomes eligible if pass is previously touched by an eligible receiver.

I honestly think the Vikings right now are one of the worst offenses in the NFL. They finally get something marginally resembling a drive going thanks to a facemask on a Favre sack and promptly fumble the center exchange.

The bench in football is huuge compared to soccer. This results in the crowd sitting relatively far away from the field. Those two combined would cause a Plexiglass shelter to take away a lot of vision of the field. Even though it's glass, it still would obstruct the vision. Thats my guess anyway.

The vikings defense came out great, backed up the Jets, got great field position for the vikes, and they fumble the first play. Not even a caused fumble, like the other one they did it on their own.

As a packer fan, though, I know how the end-of-game interceptions feel. It sucks...

My GOD! Will people ever learn to GET ON THE GROUND?!?! If Lowery falls down, Sanchez takes a knee, and it's game over. If the Jets had missed the extra point, then it would still be a one-score game with the Vikings getting the ball back. Even so, 1:24 left and two scores isn't completely impossible for a comeback. Yes, ego-boy defensive back can't stop padding his highlight reel long enough to realize that scoring actually hurts his team.

It's probably the same result, and when it comes time to negotiate a contract he has a defensive TD to point to.

Am I the only person here who doesn't expect DBs to have their mind fixed on the clock/TO situation right after a pick? Oh, sure, some of the smarter ones will, and yes, ball security has to be paramount (I'm looking at you, Clements). But to expect strategic not scoring to happen regularly is kind of silly. In my book.

I agree. I consider myself a fairly smart fellow, and I know sprinting down the sideline, I'd be secondguessing myself with how much time was rwally left, and end up taking the safe play ie. the score.

Besides: How often do you fumble there anyway? He's a defensive back, with more than a few steps on the TE he just covered, and nothing but open field ahead of him.

Jaws just said Favre has amnesia when it comes to interceptions. That isn't amnesia. It's Alzheimers.

Does anyone else think it was a pretty terrible decision to throw the hail mary with 2 seconds left? There was literally no hope of winning the game, but a non-zero chance of an important player getting hurt.

Well the two fumbles by Stubbleface were definitely instances of oldmanitis, but the ball was likely a bit slick, which is when oldmanitis is more likely to flare up. The closing int really was a case of desperation combined with horrid blitz pickup; if Peterson and Mckinnie do their jobs, Favre may have had a chance to go downfield to Harvin. He really did make some great throws interspersed with some bad ones, and by the end he looked like the elbow was shot. I don't think he can make it 12 more games, suspension or not.

The most aggrvating thing is that, this deep into his career, Peterson still hasn't become enough of a professional to even approach adequacy in pass protection. Compare his effort with Tomlinson's; the contrast could not be more stark. I can understand the Vikings' delay in extending his contract, CBA issues aside. A guy who can't help you on third downs against a decent blitzing team really has reduced value, even if he has HOF caliber talent in other areas.

All in all, health issues aside, there were things to like for Vikings fans, in a difficult environment, against a good team, but unfortunately the NFL doesn't allow you to put aside your old qb's ailing elbow, and cornerbacks who keep getting hurt. Looking at their schedule this past week, this game certainly seemed like the one they were most likely to lose, but the problem now is that their margin for error is about used up, they still have a difficult balance of October, and, again, their health appears to be on the downward slope. The window may be closed.

speaking of calvin johnson....why was his TD legit? he jumps, catches, lands on his back in the end zone. Then, while he's still on his back, he tosses the ball to the ref. according to the discussion we all heard after week one, this should not have been a TD because he didn't maintain possession as he stood up.

what am i missing?

p.s. i'm pulling for the lions big time just hate an inconsistent rule.

Because in week one he put the ball on the ground while he was still rolling over before he showed possession. Keeping the ball off the ground really does make a huge difference.

sooooo.....if you flip the ball to the ref before getting up, that's ok? what if you flip it to the ref and the ref doesn't catch it so the ball ends up on the ground....ooops, incomplete!

i'm not arguing with you but it's seems that there is no clear definition of a catch in the end zone.

There was a catch in the Monday Night game for a first down with about 5 minutes left, where a receiver did not maintain possession. He caught it, fell down, and put the ball on the ground. It got called a catch.
