Last week's thread was hilarious. I can't jump on during the games, though, unless someone finds me a good babysitter.
By the way, any guesses as to how many points the Raiders will score this week? Pick a number between 1 and 10? Anyone?

42. That's the answer to life, the universe, and everything...oh that's right, it's Oakland we're talking about. Maybe -42?
It's the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. Which is an important distinction, because Earth would not exist but for want of the question.
Sorry for being nitpicky but I'm rather obsessive about Douglas Adams.
Okay, strike the rather. I think anyone who actually owns "The Salmon of Doubt" and read every page of it has to say they're obsessed. I mean, it includes a three-page (I think--going off of memory) story about his nose, for crying out loud!

Can you name the doctor who serials he wrote? Then you're truly obsessed. :-)
I'm ashamed to admit that not only can I not do so, but I've never seen any "Doctor Who" at all. I was 4 years old when it went off the air (according to the imdb, anyway).
Tennant is indeed pretty awesome, but I think by some point in series four he'd somewhat jumped the shark - at least on every non-Moffat script. The constant gurning and "Alons-y, Alonso"-ing and so on was starting to squash out actual character, in both the writing and the performance. Can't wait for Moffat to take over full time - the man is a genius. Also, the new companion is hot.
I was actually at university with Harry Lloyd, who played Son of Mine in the Family of Blood double in season 3. Good guy, and a fantastic actor - definitely one who deserves the success he's getting.

I really like the Hitchhiker's Guide series, but my favorite book of all time is Good Omens. What a book. I think we should come up with names for the worst teams like they do in that book, like 'things that don't work even after you give them a good thumping," that sort of thing...

Late 20th Century English satirical speculative fiction is going to be a recognised/studied movement at some point in the future, and Pratchett and Adams are the two leading figures within it. I think Adams was probably the more talented writer, but Pratchett overall produced the better oevre. Pratchett's a perfectionist who honed his craft over years of practice and self-edited with serious rigour. He started off writing Hitchhiker's-but-fantasy-and-not-quite-as-good sprawling cod-epic romps, but over time found his true voice in much more tightly structured/plotted satires. By the time he'd got things down pat (somewhere around Reaper Man, by my reckoning) the prose style, characterisation and plotting were immaculate, the jokes were still extremely funny and the whole thing just worked - and worked pretty much every time. Adams, on the other hand, found writing extremely difficult and could seldom be bothered to really polish up his work. As a result, most of his novels are, to my mind, brilliant in many places but messy and rambling in others - the exceptions being Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and Last Chance to See (not that that's a novel, but you get the point).
Good Omens is brilliant. The collaboration between Pratchett and Gaiman seems to have worked remarkably well, given that the book is miles better than anything else Pratchett had written by that time or would for several years afterwards, and miles better than anything else Gaiman has ever written period.
I've never read Pratchett for a strange reason: I have a friend who loves his work and I have absolutely no respect for her opinion on literature. I'm not sure she could even name another author. She claimed she had never previoiusly heard of "Hamlet." So I long assumed that he must not be any good. I have heard his name mentioned admiringly by other Adams fans elsewhere, though, so I should bite the bullet on it.
And I agree that Adams tended to be brilliant in places but rambling and messy in others, though I always thought the rambling was actually part of what made him so funny.

I think I was 10 when I first read Hitchhikers Guide and I was hooked thereafter. Although, thinking back, shortly after that I saw the Holy Grail for the first time (circa 1980). I also liked the Jason Cosmo series, although more for how they made fun of the genre than anything else. Oh yes, and how can I forget the Stainless Steel Rat series? The first two or three books were really good; however, everything after Harrison introduced the twins went downhill. So he's sort of the literary equivalent of L.L Cool J. I kept on buying his albums after Walking With a Panther came out, hoping against hope that it would be good, but kept on being disappointed.

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
by Mr Shush :: Tue, 10/20/2009 - 10:22am
No, Pratchett's very, very good indeed. I'd read Good Omens or Nation first, as they're (by a distance) the two best non-Discworld books. There are something like 35 Discworld novels, and the earliest ones are definitely not the best (though still pretty good), so rather than jump in mid-series or try to form a judgment based on something that is definitely not his best work I'd go for one of the above-mentioned. Though at the end of the day it is all, of course, words, words, words.

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
by Jimmy :: Sat, 10/24/2009 - 10:36am
I totally agree that Good Omens is a work of genius but I found Nation to be really disapointing. The really bleak way it starts clashed really awkwardly with the later quasi-comic subplot (or so I thought) and what was all the drivel about 'the Crown'? I actually told my brother it wasn't really worth reading and I wouldn't have said that about a Pratchett novel (aimed at adults) for a long while.
Then again I thought the first two discworld novels were as funny as anything he has written since. They weren't as well rounded so there are some incongruities with later stories but they were a bit darker and less anodine and formulaic as some of his later books.
I think the craziest thing about Raiderjoe is that all of those non-Raider picks are very reasonable. Looking his picks over, the winners and scores all make perfect sense. In that context, Raiders 24- Eagles 14 seems almost plausible.
Also, his mangled sorta phonetic spelling of "jakuars" is beautiful.

I just mean plausible in the sense of "hey, here's this score, just hanging out here with all the other reasonable picks. nothing funny about it. just another pick amongst picks. it could happen. it's surely not being put out there as an act of psychotic homerism."
also, i don't think the Raiders will win, but don't jinx it man. The Eagles tied the Bengals last year. They TIED the 4-11-1 Bengals. You just never know what improbable depths are actually possible with this team...

IRC has the advantage of immediacy, and more consistent interactivity. There is no need to hit F5 every couple minutes. Most of the time, questions about any game get answered quickly. I guess there are flash or javascript widgets made for live-blogging or chatting that approximate that advantage, but FO does not use any of them, which is fine, since IRC just works. Basically, message boards are great for thoughtful discussion during the week, but during games, IRC gives you quicker interaction at the expense of deeper insight.

There was a nice completion from Brees to Moore a moment ago. Brees threw into double coverage and Webster got a hand on the ball, but Moore managed to catch it. Meanwhile, the Giants don't seem to be generating much of a pass rush early, so the Saints are marching down the field.

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread

Brees to Colston for a long TD pass (around 40 yards), except the Giants are challenging. The replay looks like Colston will be ruled down at the one. So, a long pass to threaten again for the Saints. Replay confirms first and goal at the one. Good challenge by Coughlin.
As for the Giants pass rush, it looks pretty conventional. I didn't see any stunting and only one blitz. It looks like Brees is taking only 3 and 5-step drops and when his back foot hits, he's throwing the ball. And, those throws so far today have been on time and on target. The ball is getting out of Brees hand very fast and on most plays the rush doesn't even have time to get to Brees before he throws the ball.

So far today, the Saints secondary looks much improved over previous years. One of their DBs (#22) ran step-for-step with Manningham and broke up the pass.
As I write this, Smith beats the coverage but Manning overthrows Smith by about 6 inches on what would have been a TD. Giants apparently trying for a field goal when the 2nd quarter begins.

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread

It seems the big problem with the Giants pass rush today is they are getting no pressure up the middle, so Brees is able to step up and make his throws. The edge rushers are getting close, but Brees is stepping up inside of them.
As I write this, Brees to Meachem for a long TD. I didn't catch the distance but I think it was 50+. PAT blocked, so 20-3 Saints.

Webster just got called for pass interference at the 12-yard line. I think it was a horrible call. He and Colston got their feet tangled up. Hochuli said Webster wasn't playing the ball, but I don't agree. To be fair to the zebras, two different officials threw flags.
The Saints offense is making it look way too easy. The Saints had several nice runs at the beginning of the drive. The Saints dial-up a sweet play-action pass play: Brees to Moore for the TD and its 27-10 Saints.

The Giants take advantage of the field position to score a TD. It was a close play. Manning was late on the throw and Sharper nearly picked him at the goal line. Nevertheless, 27-17 Saints.

This possession in the end zone stuff has gotten out of hand. Hines Ward just caught the ball in the end zone, got two feet down, held on as it hit the ground, rolled over out of bounds and the ball came out as he was done rolling over. No catch. Should WRs bring the balls with them to the sideline? Do we need to time how long someone holds onto the ball in the end zone? I don't even know what a catch is anymore.

Nobody Talks About Drew Brees

Commentary in the Saints game about Drew Bress: "I don't know how you can talk about the elite quarterbacks in the league and not put him in there". Does anybody actually exclude him from that list anymore? I really feel like more people talk about how he's excluded from that list than actually exclude him in the first place. Is that just because I'm selective about where I read my NFL commentary - are there really that many people who don't count Drew Bress as one of the best QBs in the league?

I'm in the UK - even FoxSports' commentators are better than Kevin Cadle and Johnnie "Could I BE More Patronising?" Mitchell. It's also not like I can just turn on the radio and get a different commentary feed - even FoxSports' team is better than silence. Barely, but still better.
At least SkySports finally ditched Mitchell from their studio team - instead we have the dulcit tones of Mike Holmgren. Yay for niche sports.
My father doesn't. I usually use him as my standard for "regular fans." (i.e., those who believe all the b.s. the announcers spout every week.) He says the best QBs in the league are Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Tom Brady, and Joe Flacco.
I can't explain that list, either, so don't ask me.
He does play fantasy, actually. He always finishes near the bottom and doesn't seem to understand why.
But I mean they just accept that "wisdom" as the Truth of Football--you have to run to set up the pass, you shouldn't go for it on 4th down unless you have to, etc. I think there are a lot of fans like that.

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread

Now, the circus has arrived. Manning is strip sacked. After the ball bounces a bit, Shanley picks up the fumble and runs it to the 7-yard line. Now the question is, did Shanley fumble at the 7 or was he down be contact. If it's a fumble, I think the Giants recovered in the end zone, which would be a safety.
Kareem Mackenzie stepped on the ball during the play, hurt his left leg, and had to be carted from the field.

And, that might be the dagger in the Giants. Bush runs around left end for the 7-yard TD. 34-17 Saints. That was quite the turn-around. It looked like Manning was going to drive the Giants for at least a field goal. Looking a MacKenzie's injury, I don't think he'll be back so the Giants will have to make adjustments on the offensive line. I don't think I've seen Brandon Jacobs back since his neck stinger, either.

If by some miracle he's not out after this game, basically the Skins will have to win out and look good doing it. That's pretty much the size of it. And the scary thing is, what with Dallas's play earlier this year and today's NYG and PHI results, it looks more or and more like the division really was there for the taking. Not that the Skins are glowing with talent, either, but they have enough players to at least be in the discussion in a down year for the division as a whole, and they're botching their opportunities. That's the third winless team this year to come in and not be the '08 Lions at the expense of the Skins.

Quite true, but I'm really wondering about Dierdorf commenting about "of [Vikings' QB's] generation." Who really is in the same generation? I tend to interpret that as referring to anybody who played regularly at the same time as him. For example, I'd count Matt Ryan as part of Peyton Manning's generation, and Rich Gannon as part of Peyton Manning's generation, but not Matt Ryan and Rich Gannon as part of each other's generation.

By that definition, Testaverde's generation stretches as far as from 1978 (Steve DeBerg first season as a regular) to ca. 2017 (Roethlisberger retires) ~= 50 years.

Yeah, he's one of those guys fast enough to produce a few "holy cow!" plays every now and then, but he hasn't demonstrated anything resembling consistency...
I will repeat what I've been saying this year--he looks very much like early Rod Smith: Some speed (though not an absolute burner) and makes a circus grab that you say, "Did he really just catch that?" every three weeks but then promptly drops one on the numbers and falls down on a route. That's how Smith looked, at least to me (and for what it's worth my father agrees) when I was 10-11 years old. Smith just seemed to suddenly "get it" in his third year (at age 27), so maybe that will happen with Rice (who is in his third year and 23 years old).

I disagree. He's not that fast, but he's tall (6'4", I think) and has good hands. With a QB that requires defenses to worry about Berrian and Shiancoe (and, of course, the running game), Rice has had good success in 1-1 matchups. Also, Favre seems to favor Rice in 1-1 because he rarely gets the top corner and has great leaping ability (see his two onside kick recoveries against Green Bay).
That one huge pass (there were two on the day that I can recall) where he angled sharply toward the sideline before getting caught running straight up the field showed that he doesn't have elite speed OR enough poise to remember to take the smarter angle straight toward the pilon. I like Rice a lot, and I think this year's experience could help him to become a valuable receiver for many years.

Maybe Collins just needs to get in his groove. Or maybe playingg your 37 year old career backup QB is never really a solution to your problems.

I think if Brennan had made enough progress to be a real option, he'd be on the field right now. What does playing Todd Collins for a week or two (or until the end of the year) get you?
If you're Jim Zorn, a slight chance of being able to scapegoat Jason Campbell for the team's underwhelming start.
If you're a Redskins fan, nothing.
If you're an opponent, full knowledge that the ball will never travel more than 15 yards when you play them.
And I agree about Brennan in general, but if Collins plays REALLY badly, is there a possibility? Not to mention that Zorn & co. have not exactly shown competence so far in his tenure.

I know the season's young and we're still dealing with small sample sizes, but right now you'd have to think the Saints are strong contender for the NFC championship.
I had them in the NFC title game before the season and I'm starting to think I underestimated them.

Right before the commercial in the Ravens/Vikings game, commentators said that the Vikings turnaround was due to somebody "just having fun out there..."
From being a decent team whose biggest weakness was the passing game, to being an elite team that can beat you in every way. Although it's still to early in the year, but it's never to early to have the "Just Having Fun" speech.
I meant how big of a margin does there need to be and/or how much time left, not that they should have been already at the point I said that. I was rather unclear, sorry.

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread

And, we get the circus reprise. The Saints get a rush on Manning, who starts running backwards, figures out that's a bad idea, curls around towards the near sideline, and then heaves a pass into the end zone from around the 20. There are about 5 Saints defenders and 2 or 3 Giants players in the end zone. The Saints nearly intercept, but the ball somehow falls into Brandon Jacobs's hands. But, the Giants are called for holding. Finally, on 4th down, the Giants kick a field goal.
If he hadn't done so already, Easterbrook just wrote "Game over!" in his notebook.
Well, maybe it would be more accurate to say that the ball fell into his hands and he didn't drop it.

He seemed to be walking a bit gingerly between plays, so he may be playing hurt. Though I didn't see him take more than 5 steps like that so perhaps he's fine.
So, now I face this choice: Which is actually a worse assault on the senses of a football fan, JaMarcus Russell or Phil Simms?

Sorry for being nitpicky but I'm rather obsessive about Douglas Adams.
Okay, strike the rather. I think anyone who actually owns "The Salmon of Doubt" and read every page of it has to say they're obsessed. I mean, it includes a three-page (I think--going off of memory) story about his nose, for crying out loud!

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I'm ashamed to admit that not only can I not do so, but I've never seen any "Doctor Who" at all. I was 4 years old when it went off the air (according to the imdb, anyway).

You'll love David Tennant.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I've never read Pratchett for a strange reason: I have a friend who loves his work and I have absolutely no respect for her opinion on literature. I'm not sure she could even name another author. She claimed she had never previoiusly heard of "Hamlet." So I long assumed that he must not be any good. I have heard his name mentioned admiringly by other Adams fans elsewhere, though, so I should bite the bullet on it.
And I agree that Adams tended to be brilliant in places but rambling and messy in others, though I always thought the rambling was actually part of what made him so funny.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
No, Pratchett's very, very good indeed. I'd read Good Omens or Nation first, as they're (by a distance) the two best non-Discworld books. There are something like 35 Discworld novels, and the earliest ones are definitely not the best (though still pretty good), so rather than jump in mid-series or try to form a judgment based on something that is definitely not his best work I'd go for one of the above-mentioned. Though at the end of the day it is all, of course, words, words, words.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I think the craziest thing about Raiderjoe is that all of those non-Raider picks are very reasonable. Looking his picks over, the winners and scores all make perfect sense. In that context, Raiders 24- Eagles 14 seems almost plausible.
Also, his mangled sorta phonetic spelling of "jakuars" is beautiful.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
On what planet does that seem plausible? I've been looking to vacation in a magical fairlyland of rainbows and unicorns.

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I just mean plausible in the sense of "hey, here's this score, just hanging out here with all the other reasonable picks. nothing funny about it. just another pick amongst picks. it could happen. it's surely not being put out there as an act of psychotic homerism."
also, i don't think the Raiders will win, but don't jinx it man. The Eagles tied the Bengals last year. They TIED the 4-11-1 Bengals. You just never know what improbable depths are actually possible with this team...

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I hope these threads do come back to life, like last week. I used to really enjoy reading them along with Audibles on Monday.
I know there is a FO IRC channel that folks use during the games. Out of curiosity for anyone who does use IRC, why do you use that instead of the game threads? Back in the day, the old game threads would totally choke on Sundays, but those days are past...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
IRC has the advantage of immediacy, and more consistent interactivity. There is no need to hit F5 every couple minutes. Most of the time, questions about any game get answered quickly. I guess there are flash or javascript widgets made for live-blogging or chatting that approximate that advantage, but FO does not use any of them, which is fine, since IRC just works. Basically, message boards are great for thoughtful discussion during the week, but during games, IRC gives you quicker interaction at the expense of deeper insight.

Well, that was a quick start to the Vikings game.
Followed by a commercial for 2012 . . . it looks even worse than it sounds.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
There was a nice completion from Brees to Moore a moment ago. Brees threw into double coverage and Webster got a hand on the ball, but Moore managed to catch it. Meanwhile, the Giants don't seem to be generating much of a pass rush early, so the Saints are marching down the field.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
An early gamble by the Saints. They're going for it on 4th and less than yard from the one yard line. A run, a leap over the line, and it's a TD for the Saints.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
It was a 15 play drive for the Saints.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
loved that they went for it - I think they need to put the hammer down to win, conserative ball doesn't seem like it will cut it against a team as good in the air as the Giants...

Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
That hung in the air for 70 yards, no really, and Mason was 2 inches short of catching it...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Brees to Shockey to complete the drive. 14-0 Saints. So far, the Giants aren't showing that they can slow down the Saints offense.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
So how many heart attacks by fantasy football owners are attributable to upheld touchdown challenges?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I couldn't tell you. I don't play fantasy football.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I'm almost a statistic :) The overturned Braylon TD made me wait until the last play of the game to win (Had Brown also). I had Brees and Colston for that last TD overturned. I started Shockey too though :)
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Hixon makes a nice return to the 50-yard line. The kicker reached out and got a handful of Hixon's jersey right at the shoulder pad and was able to whip Hixon down. He probably saved a TD.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
So far today, the Saints secondary looks much improved over previous years. One of their DBs (#22) ran step-for-step with Manningham and broke up the pass.
As I write this, Smith beats the coverage but Manning overthrows Smith by about 6 inches on what would have been a TD. Giants apparently trying for a field goal when the 2nd quarter begins.

Going for a field goal feels like a mistake - I know its early, but the Saints are having their way on offense. If they go up 21-3, I don't think the Giants can get out of that hole...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I agree. I don't think field goals are going to win the game for the Giants today.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
And the Giants were moving that drive (as you mention, they were 6 inches from a TD) - I think you've got to take some risks if you want to hang with Brees when he's on fire like today...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Oops. There was a time out which stopped the clock at 0:08 to go in the first quarter. Tynes kicks a 49-yard field goal to make the score 14-3. The kickoff will end the first quarter.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Why do 2/3 of the commercials on tv play new covers of older songs? We rarely hear the actual old songs or actual new songs but covers everywhere and I really wonder if there is a reason. (Last seen: Buddy Holly's "Everyday" redone by someone and sounding very early '80s.)
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
that way the people making the commercial only pay the publishing fee to whoever wrote the song, which is basically a base amount, while not having to pay the famous performers anything. remember when microsoft paid the stones all that loot for "start me up"? not necessary with a cover version.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Obligatory FOX stat to start the second quarter: Saints ran 21 plays for 150 yards and 2 TDs in the first quarter.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
That blocked PAT is the only thing that has gone right for the Giants so far... this one is getting ugly quick...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, the Giants are hurting themselves on offense. They've had a few big play opportunities, but they seem to be a little out-of-synch. Maybe I should be giving a little more credit to the Saints defense for causing the out-of-synch.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Sorry, the distance was 36-yards. I'm still trying to figure out how to type and watch simultaneously.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Allen sacks Flacco for fumble and TD return, but it is under review. If it stands the Ravens are sunk. Guess this game is answering some questions as to whether the Vikings are for real.
Super surprised by the NYG/NO start. NO looks great.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Do we know that the Ravens are good? I think they're an average team, really.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I think the thought was that MIN had not even beat an average team. I don't agree with it, but after ATL whupped SF I heard some doubts about MIN, concluded by "lets see how they do against BAL".
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Okay.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I've been drinking the "Ravens are an elite defense" Kool-aid for too long, I guess.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
If it stands, that will be two fumble returns for TDs in consecutive weeks for Allen. I wonder how many times that's been done before.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Someone else had the return I think.
Also it was reversed. Ravens punt.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I don't know how often that's happened, but didn't Mike Brown have overtime pick sixes in consecutive games for the Bears several years ago?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
So Cadillac,Benson and the Saints D against the Giants all are good fantasy plays apparently. Anyone else feel like heading for a shelter?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Did I just see ray lewis shed a block and make a tackle?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Manning throws a horrible pick (he was baited by Sharper), but is rescued by a correctly called roughing the passer penalty.
I love watching games called by Ed Hochuli.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I haven't actually seen Flacco play before and he looks seriously good.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I don't get to see the Ravens play very often either, but I've been impressed by Flacco, too, the few times I've seen him play.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
The Giants offense gets off life support and drives down the field to close the score to 20-10. Let's see if the offense can inspire the defense and make this a game.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
On the Steelers TD, Big Ben dropped back, scanned the field, filmed a commercial, ate a snack, looked around, and then "oh yeah--I should probably throw the ball, huh?"=TD, Heath Miller.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Just as long as the commercial doesn't use a covered song for its music, then that's OK.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I suggest a rousing dance version of Boston's "Long Time."
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Brandon Jacobs is being treated for a neck stinger. No word on his further availability.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Clay Matthews has been all over making plays today for the Packers.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Webster just got called for pass interference at the 12-yard line. I think it was a horrible call. He and Colston got their feet tangled up. Hochuli said Webster wasn't playing the ball, but I don't agree. To be fair to the zebras, two different officials threw flags.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Now we have "All You Need is Love."
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
The Saints offense is making it look way too easy. The Saints had several nice runs at the beginning of the drive. The Saints dial-up a sweet play-action pass play: Brees to Moore for the TD and its 27-10 Saints.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
This just in--Drew Brees and the Saints offense is REALLY, REALLY good. Not to mention they lost a defensive TD on a roughing the passer penalty. (Looked like a legit penalty--just mad that it cost Sharper ANOTHER INT TD.)
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Daren Sharper:Eli Manning :: Ronde Barber:Donovan McNabb
What is it with these NFC South DBs vs NFC East QBs?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Sharper has always owned Eli. Take a look at the Vikings-Giants games from Sharper's time in Minnesota.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Hixon with another huge return for the Giants. First and ten Giants at the Saints 37. I think the Saints kicker might be leading the special teams in tackles right now.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
The Giants take advantage of the field position to score a TD. It was a close play. Manning was late on the throw and Sharper nearly picked him at the goal line. Nevertheless, 27-17 Saints.
NYG @ NO
TD Giants. Of course, they left 3 minutes for Brees to march down the field.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Okay, even in highlights I've never been impressed by Ray Rice, but it seems whenever I'm not paying attention he puts up big numbers. True to form, he looks pathetic today. Is he good or not?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
My impression is that he mostly is a jack-of-all-trades. Pretty good in pass-pro, pretty good reciever, pretty good RB. Not elite speed, but he runs rather hard.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Drew Brees is in the zone. At the 2-minute warning, he's 17-19, 252 yards, and 2 TDs.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
That should've been 17-19, 247 yards, and 3 TDs.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
3 and 1 for Brees at the Giants 1. Huge play coming up...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Stuffed!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Tough call - I think that's a TD. Can't overturn it, though....
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
A great goal line stand. Will that bring the Giants defense back to life?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
This possession in the end zone stuff has gotten out of hand. Hines Ward just caught the ball in the end zone, got two feet down, held on as it hit the ground, rolled over out of bounds and the ball came out as he was done rolling over. No catch. Should WRs bring the balls with them to the sideline? Do we need to time how long someone holds onto the ball in the end zone? I don't even know what a catch is anymore.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Man, Thomas ran like a straight punk on 4th-and-goal. Lower your shoulder and drive, wimp.
Hail Hydra!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Good point. He did seem rather tentative like he was waiting for a hole to open up. Stick your nose in and make a hole!
Re: Nobody Talks About Drew Brees
You're paying attention to Fox commentators? Just by being in this website you know about 50% more about the game.
Re: Nobody Talks About Drew Brees
I'm in the UK - even FoxSports' commentators are better than Kevin Cadle and Johnnie "Could I BE More Patronising?" Mitchell. It's also not like I can just turn on the radio and get a different commentary feed - even FoxSports' team is better than silence. Barely, but still better.
At least SkySports finally ditched Mitchell from their studio team - instead we have the dulcit tones of Mike Holmgren. Yay for niche sports.
Re: Nobody Talks About Drew Brees
My father doesn't. I usually use him as my standard for "regular fans." (i.e., those who believe all the b.s. the announcers spout every week.) He says the best QBs in the league are Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Tom Brady, and Joe Flacco.
I can't explain that list, either, so don't ask me.
Re: Nobody Talks About Drew Brees
And the Vikings' QB is there, too--somehow I forgot to list him.
Re: Nobody Talks About Drew Brees
So basically anyone who doesn't play Fantasy?
Re: Nobody Talks About Drew Brees
He does play fantasy, actually. He always finishes near the bottom and doesn't seem to understand why.
But I mean they just accept that "wisdom" as the Truth of Football--you have to run to set up the pass, you shouldn't go for it on 4th down unless you have to, etc. I think there are a lot of fans like that.
Re: Nobody Talks About Drew Brees
We need men like that in every league. God bless him.
Re: Nobody Talks About Drew Brees
So smart and true. The best fantasy QB always wins the super bowl.
Re: Nobody Talks About Drew Brees
Probably the same oafs who think Eli is an elite QB.
Hail Hydra!
Re: Nobody Talks About Drew Brees
Ha!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
What the hell was Manning doing?
Lost 10 seconds and didn't even pick up the blitz. Jesus.
-- Go Phins!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I actually like the fact that they didn't spike the ball, but yeah - if your'e going to take that much time on the line of scrimmage, you've got to see the blitz coming.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
The play was ruled down at the 7-yard line, which was upheld. First and goal Saints.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
And, that might be the dagger in the Giants. Bush runs around left end for the 7-yard TD. 34-17 Saints. That was quite the turn-around. It looked like Manning was going to drive the Giants for at least a field goal. Looking a MacKenzie's injury, I don't think he'll be back so the Giants will have to make adjustments on the offensive line. I don't think I've seen Brandon Jacobs back since his neck stinger, either.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
You're kidding right? I call over 80 pts scored in this game. Fantasy Apocalypse.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen a 34-17 game at halftime where I thought the outcome was 100% still up in the air...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Technicality - wouldn't it be a touchback rather than a safety, as possession had changed then changed back?
I'm pretty sure it would have turned out (bizarrely) as a good play for the Giants - they'd have the ball, first and ten at the 20.
NYG @ NO
Interesting situation with the fumble - because of the clock, the Saints are actually better off if Shanle is down on the 5 rather than getting the safety.
Re: NYG @ NO
18 seconds and 1 timeout is more than enough time for Brees to do something today...
Re: NYG @ NO
Would it have been a safety, though??
Possession changed to NO, so it should be a touchback, right?
-- Go Phins!
Re: NYG @ NO
That sounds right, but I can honestly say I don't know.
Re: NYG @ NO
That's a very good question. I think you're right.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Wow, such much for the momentum of the goal line stand by the Giants..
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
St. Louis still holding on to their lead into the 3rd quarter. After the blowout last week in Seattle, do we have to put Jax in with the truly crappy teams like KC and Detroit?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I favor badly coached. Del Rio should go back to the macarena.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
One of the fantasy leagues I'm in has a 2 point deduction for quarterback sacks. My QB choice was Aaron Rodgers vs Detroit or Matt Schaub vs Cincy. Figuring the packers would torch detroit with 3 starters out, I chose Rodgers, and I was right, but the same old offensive line problems are still there, unfortunately. I think I've lose 8 points so far with the sacks.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Clinton Portis sighting
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I've been trying to keep up with the half-time show. Yes, I'm a masochist.
Dante Wesley (Panthers) was ejected from the game. I didn't see what he did, but it caused a fairly impressive fight.
Jason Campbell has been benched.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I think he was the guy that crushed Clifton Smith on a kick return, even though Smith either signaled fair catch or wasn't able to return it. Smith was injured and Wesley argued, so he was ejected.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
That coward gave the returner a concussion. Takes a real man to hit a defenseless player.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Todd Collins appears to be in for Jason Campbell. Was there an injury or a benching?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
OMG! Is that Todd Collins' music?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
unfortunately, yes.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
It was a benching. I think I heard Chris's shout of joy and/or vindication all the way up here in Fairbanks.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Benched. Zorn's job is now dependent on the play of Todd Collins.
Hail Hydra!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
As an Eagles fan, I'm actually thrilled. Campbell obviously had his flaws, be he always seemed to bring his A-game against the Eagles. I feel like its been years since they beat the Redskins... (ok, so the Skins only won 3 out of the last 4, but still)
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
You think Zorn can save his job under any circumstances?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
If by some miracle he's not out after this game, basically the Skins will have to win out and look good doing it. That's pretty much the size of it. And the scary thing is, what with Dallas's play earlier this year and today's NYG and PHI results, it looks more or and more like the division really was there for the taking. Not that the Skins are glowing with talent, either, but they have enough players to at least be in the discussion in a down year for the division as a whole, and they're botching their opportunities. That's the third winless team this year to come in and not be the '08 Lions at the expense of the Skins.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I'm starting to think opposing defenses could throw James Harrison to the ground and smother him to death with a pillow, and they still wouldn't call holding.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
James Harrison in "answer to Pittsburgh's offensive blocking concerns" shocker!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
To be fair, he's a very good defensive player and the NFL has an explicit "stop very good defensive players from doing their job" policy.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Roger Goddell just called. He wants to have a meeting to discuss your statement.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Why is The Man always trying to bring me down? I hate The Man.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Now on that play Rice did look good. Good balance and a really strong stiff-arm.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Brandon Jacobs started the second half. No word on MacKenzie.
And, as I type this, Hochuli's crew calls their one annual, obligatory offensive pass interference pick play on the Giants. I didn't see the pick. It's certain that there are numerous other much more blatant picks that occur in every NFL game that never get called.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
"Doctor, I think we have a faint pulse." The Giants hold the Saints for the first time today. The Giants got a little pressure on Brees on the third down play.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Greer picks Manning. "Doctor, the patient's flatlined!"
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
How long is a QB's "generation?"
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
That may depend whether you're asking Vinny Testaverde or Marques Tuiasosopo...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Quite true, but I'm really wondering about Dierdorf commenting about "of [Vikings' QB's] generation." Who really is in the same generation? It seems to me like it's about 3 years either way of when the QB in question is drafted, but 2 may make more sense. I was just curious if anyone else had a thought.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Who is the Vikings' QB again? ;)
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
By that definition, Testaverde's generation stretches as far as from 1978 (Steve DeBerg first season as a regular) to ca. 2017 (Roethlisberger retires) ~= 50 years.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I think you can even stretch it a little further and say it goes to when Jay Cutler retires, which would be about 3-5 years later.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Make that 40, ofc.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Sidney Rice emerging?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Could be, but he also looked like he was emerging 2 years ago, at least to me.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, he's one of those guys fast enough to produce a few "holy cow!" plays every now and then, but he hasn't demonstrated anything resembling consistency...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I will repeat what I've been saying this year--he looks very much like early Rod Smith: Some speed (though not an absolute burner) and makes a circus grab that you say, "Did he really just catch that?" every three weeks but then promptly drops one on the numbers and falls down on a route. That's how Smith looked, at least to me (and for what it's worth my father agrees) when I was 10-11 years old. Smith just seemed to suddenly "get it" in his third year (at age 27), so maybe that will happen with Rice (who is in his third year and 23 years old).
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I think you should just talk to him.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Good point
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
"Doctor, the patient's gone back into arrest!" Saints blitz Sharper, who Bradshaw fails to pick up. Manning throws it up for grabs (he was hit a little on the throw). Interception by Greer of the Saints. Another nice little drive down the tubes.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
For all the talk about the Giants DB injuries, this one's on the D-Line. They're getting no pressure at all.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
They also failed to get any sacks against TB. FO's adjusted sack rate says their the best in the league, but this game they sure don't look like it... Do they have any injuries?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
That's true. Maybe we should be giving the Saints offensive line credit for shutting down the Giants defensive line.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, that's undoubtedly a factor...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
And Brees is really, really good at avoiding sacks.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Drew Bledoe wouldn't have gotten sacked today.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Ouch! That's harsh. Probably true, but harsh.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Todd Collins, unsurprisingly, looks just as bad as Campbell. I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned but there's some chance (maybe) that team has offense line problems.
Maybe Collins just needs to get in his groove. Or maybe playingg your 37 year old career backup QB is never really a solution to your problems.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Countdown to Colt Brennan?
Though that may violate my first rule of the NFL--never count on a quarterback from my college (Colorado). Since he transferred to Hawaii, I don't know whether he counts.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I think if Brennan had made enough progress to be a real option, he'd be on the field right now. What does playing Todd Collins for a week or two (or until the end of the year) get you?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
If you're Jim Zorn, a slight chance of being able to scapegoat Jason Campbell for the team's underwhelming start.
If you're a Redskins fan, nothing.
If you're an opponent, full knowledge that the ball will never travel more than 15 yards when you play them.
And I agree about Brennan in general, but if Collins plays REALLY badly, is there a possibility? Not to mention that Zorn & co. have not exactly shown competence so far in his tenure.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Brennan is out for the year...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Brennan was put on IR before the season began.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Yes. I forgot.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Boy, I'm glad I don't have to watch the Chiefs@Redskins. That game must be intolerable. I wonder which team will summon up the most feathers.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I think a 6-6 tie has to be one of the most insulting (to the audience) scores in football.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Wow. amazing one-handed grab by Driver with a db holding one of his hands...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I'm going to declare the patient dead: 40-17 late in Q3... Tag 'em and bag 'em.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I forgot to sub out the Giants D on my fantasy team. They're scoring a -2 so far.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Well, to put my medical metaphor mercifully to rest, at this point I think the only hope for the Giants is if Dr. Frankenstein shows up to reanimate their moldering corpse allowing them to go on a rampage of football destruction. I'm not holding my breath.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
If I were John Harbaugh, Walker may never play again after that.
Minnesota already has a free play and you interfere to make sure they get the yardage?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I thought the same thing. Rice ended up making the catch anyway, but what a bone-headed interference.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Glancing at the stats, I see Anderson in Cleveland has decided to seriously challenge JaMarcus for the title of "worst."
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I'd say that one's a toss-up, but I don't trust anyone to come down with the coin.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
To be settled Sunday, Dec. 27 in Cleveland. The worst man is the best man.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I thought that was already established last week.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Anderson could've easily been a one-week wonder. To compete with JaMarcus you need to get the job done week in, week out. You can't be a terrible, putrid Qb for 3 quarters and expect to challenge the master...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
At what point does DVOA for these guys get renamed to DVUA?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Now, now. He currently has 3 1/2 times the number of completions than he had last week.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I know the season's young and we're still dealing with small sample sizes, but right now you'd have to think the Saints are strong contender for the NFC championship.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I had them in the NFC title game before the season and I'm starting to think I underestimated them.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Now that Giants/NO is out of hand, I flipped over to Carolina/Bucs - it's actually turning out to be a game. Both teams are playing with a lot of passion... Josh Johnson ain't so bad...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
And a terrible pick 6 from Delhomme...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
wtf?! who the hell decides to leave Jared Allen unblocked on a pass play?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I think he probably could have gotten to the QB faster if he weren't laughing at that himself.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I'm less and less upset about Minnesota passing on Oher in the draft to net Harvin/Loadholt. That play had me chuckling, too.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Right before the commercial in the Ravens/Vikings game, commentators said that the Vikings turnaround was due to somebody "just having fun out there..."
Could he be talking about Roger Rabbit?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Turnaround? From what?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
From being a decent team whose biggest weakness was the passing game, to being an elite team that can beat you in every way. Although it's still to early in the year, but it's never to early to have the "Just Having Fun" speech.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Shave and a haircut...two bits!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Flacco is really hobbling between plays. At what point do the Ravens give up and rest him?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Probably when they stop thinking they still have a chance to win, which at this rate will be when the game ends.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I meant how big of a margin does there need to be and/or how much time left, not that they should have been already at the point I said that. I was rather unclear, sorry.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Ah, gotcha.
Well, if they can't score a TD on this coming drive, I would say at that point.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Okay, I'd say now there is no possibility of reaching that point.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
This just in: Mark Clayton caught a football pass.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Carolina with a long (10 or 12 play) drive and I think they've also passed once. They should just do that every time. Williams and Stewart are pretty darn good...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Wooo! AP!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Nooooo!! AP hurt on a play. Possibly out for more than this game, given the footage.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
And I can hear a collective holding of breath throughout the Twin Cities as AD goes down.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Wait--Brandon Jacobs caught something?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Well, maybe it would be more accurate to say that the ball fell into his hands and he didn't drop it.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Wow. Carolina with the go ahead score, 29 seconds left in the game. Started the drive at 8:32. 1 pass play. That's some power football and ball control.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Ray Rice will not...be...DENIED!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Sonova... Ray Rice just went down the field thanks to some really crappy Viking tackling. TD on the next play.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I have not been impressed with the Vikings' defense yet this season.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Well, I guess we'll get to see if they can stiffen up and stop the Raven's from winning in the last few seconds.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Jesus, that was a giant fall on their face by the defense. This is embarrassing.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I just looked up to see that the Lambs may be on the verge of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. And, that the Chefs appear to have better access to the feather merchants.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
... and now Percy Harvin is injured on a kickoff return. Reinjured shoulder.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Harvin goes down. Flacco, Harvin, and Peterson all seemingly injured to varying degrees in this game.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I've never seen Ray Lewis get a sack before.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
He actually has a fair amount of them, too, so I guess that's just luck.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Well, the Redskins look like they're going to give the Chiefs their first win of the year. I think I'll put the over/under on the number of hours Zorn has left as the Redskins' head coach at 6.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Just saw surfing the internet that Zorn has been stripped of play calling duties. So, it looks like he'll keep his head coaching job for at least another game.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Did I piss off Ray Rice earlier?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
RAY RICE WILL...NOT...BE...DENIED!!!!!!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Make that Sidney...
what a game...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Cam Cameron, ladies and gentlemen...
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I just switched over to the Ravens@Vikings game. What a run by Rice, although Johnson took a horrible angle. Where has the vaunted Vikings' run defense gone?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Down the drain with some StarCaps pills . . .
(It was too easy not to say it, no need for anyone to scream at me.)
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Well played!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
The problem is Baltimore left 3:37 on the clock. All MIN needs is a FG.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
True, but at this rate the Vikings are going to give it back only up a partial score (FG or TD) with plenty of time for our D to lay another giant egg.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Thank god for Vikings QB, since he can actually make plays instead of the bumbling of Jackson.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Well...Roger Rabbit is one tough cookie. Let's just hope that the injuries to Benny (Adrian Peterson) and Herman (Percy Harvin) aren't very serious. Oh yeah, and the run defense gets better.
P.S. Ray Rice will not be denied.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I see AP's back for the Vikings. Is he playing hurt or was the earlier injury not as bad as thought?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
He seemed to be walking a bit gingerly between plays, so he may be playing hurt. Though I didn't see him take more than 5 steps like that so perhaps he's fine.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Great play call by Childress. Yessir, it's always a good idea to play for getting the smallest lead possible.
Kudos to Vikings fans for booing.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, 3 runs into the line was not exactly inspired.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Alright, 1:49 is plenty of time for a screw up. Man, this reminds me of the Culpepper years.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I'm a Bronco fan--this is how I've felt my whole life.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Ravens tried the fake spike play, but the Vikings defended it well. Flacco threw it out-of-bounds. Nice play all the way around there.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, that might have worked better if it was remotely catchable.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I think he was just stopping the clock.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I actually thought Flacco threw the ball out-of-bounds on purpose because the Vikings defended the play so well.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Well, true. It probably was a split decision on the snap.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Ravens miss the field goal as time expires. Vikings win 33-31.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
OMG! whew... well, the Vikings lucked out on that one. 6-0!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Good game. I'm not sure which team played better, so it seems fair enough for the Vikings to win.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
god. seriously, baltimore, you're happy with a 44 yard field goal attempt?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Alot of coaches do erroneously treat 40+ FGs as automatics at end of games (call 3 safe, unlikely to gain anything runs when in that range).
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Looks like Pats will be w/o Sammy Morris for at least this game (if not (a lot) longer).
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Sammy Morris injured? Who could imagine?!
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
So, now I face this choice: Which is actually a worse assault on the senses of a football fan, JaMarcus Russell or Phil Simms?
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Well, with Oakland you can listen, but try not to watch (save your eyes), but with Sims, you can watch without sound (duller game), though make sure closed captioning is also off (reading sims is just cruel).
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
JaMarcus Russell without a doubt. You can always mute the Cretin. The only way to avoid Russell is to turn off the TV, which means you're not watching football at all.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Doom: That's right! You'll never stop me! You're dead! You're all dead!
(Okay maybe going to far...)
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Brees ended up with a great if not historic game: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/tiny/XxEMK
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
Well, I never thought I'd have anything nice to say about the throw-back AFL official's uniforms, but, you know, they're easier to see against the snow.
Re: Week 6 Open Discussion Thread
I don't have a problem with the Patriots' throwbacks in general. Now, my Broncos' throwbacks . . . *gag*
