We have an Albert Haynesworth sighting! Then again, it is the Bears, so the inanimate carbon rod probably could have made that sack.

Albert Haynesworth earns a sack by bull-rushing Chris Williams into Jay Cutler. Haynesworth literally did not touch Cutler to get the sack; he just launched Williams into Cutler so forcefully that Cutler just went straight down.

Two blitzing Bears come in clean on a play-action rollout. DJ Moore tries to wrap up McNabb, but McNabb still tries to get a throw off. Israel Idonije makes a very heads-up play by getting his hands up to deflect it, and Moore fields the pop-up and has a very easy path for a score.

Stellar 24-yard touchdown throw from McNabb to Moss. If Torain keeps running as hard as he has the past few weeks and does as well in blitz pick-up as he did on that play, then he's a keeper.

The Bears have already tried their "10 on 11" wildcat play, where Cutler lines up wide right and stands there, watching the play go for minus-4 yards.
I think they're setting the whole league up. I predict a 60-yard bomb from Hester to Cutler in week 11.

Amazing--now Cutler is looking to get sacked.
The O-line collapses, and Cutler looks to be wrapped up, but somehow he escapes. Instead of getting rid of the ball or running up the field, he finds the nearest defender and runs right at him.
Despite the early pick-6, this is looking like a long night for my Bears.

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread

To be fair, McIntosh had coverage in the flat, and Cutler probably expected McIntosh to follow the receiver (Kellen Davis?) when he turned upfield. It was pretty funny, though.

Unfortunately I didn't see it, but from the play-by-play, it looks like the MIA-PIT game got off to a pretty interesting start. MIA gets out to a 6-0 lead, despite Henne starting 0/4 and Williams and Brown combining for 7 yards on 5 carries. How? Emmanuel Sanders fumbled the opening kickoff, and Big Ben was strip-sacked on third down on Pittsburgh's ensuing possession.

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread

I did see it. The Roethlisberger fumble was awesome--he was wrapped up in the backfield, got his upper body free, then a defender got hold of his left arm and as he started to try to shovel the ball to someone in front of him, the defender also grabbed his right arm and so the ball just dribbled out of his hands.

Redskins rush 7, somehow Cutler evades the pressure and scrambles out of the pocket, directly into the arms of Rocky McIntosh for another sack. He could have gone anywhere except right there. Cutler reminds me of Jeff George--a kid with great physical skill, who ends up just sucking.

Early in the game, I was thinking that Flacco was starting to look like his usual self again... but I guess he's not having that good a game (I just have the Red Zone look ins). Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick looks like a real NFL QB.
Kelly Gregg got hurt, looked pretty bad to me, and I have to guess that has a lot to do with it.
More surprising is the 20-3 score in New Orleans.

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread

I would say yes, they are outplaying the Ravens. The Ravens are averaging 9 yards per rush, but Flacco's accuracy is hit or miss. And Fitzpatrick is on fire, hitting a couple nice long touchdowns, and basically picking the Ravens secondary apart.

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread

Except that not going for it probably cost them the game. If they don't get it, it doesn't make a difference. If they do get it, the game is tied (though with a different point spread some decisions may have been different.) You can't always count on being able to get another TD, especially against good defenses.

Where've we seen this before?
Under pressure, QB (Todd Bouman in this case) chucks one up for grabs into the end zone. A bit of fighting occurs and bam, free first and goal at the one.
This was especially awful, because they called it on Carr, who was yanked down by the jersey by Mike Sims-Walker.
Awful, awful call.

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread

Defense and special teams are beating the Saints in the first half.
Saints punt on their first drive, Cribbs makes like he's taking it into the gut of the coverage team, then turns and fires a lateral/pass across the field to Eric Wright. Wright takes it into the redzone and Cleveland gets a field goal.
Later in the game, the Browns are punting from their 20. Hodges takes the snap and runs up the gut down to the Saints' 10. Cleveland takes the FG again.
Following this, Brees is being taken down and tries to throw a pass away only to have it picked off by a defensive lineman and returned 30 yards for a TD.
The Browns' other TD came thanks to a pass interference penalty on Jenkins who was covering Cribbs. That took the ball down to the 4 where Hillis took it in with ease.

Lovie Smith wastes a timeout losing a challenge about a downed runner, then the very next play doesn't challenge a turnover when it seemed pretty clear that even after being hit by Haynesworth, Cutler reached out with the ball and broke the plane.
The announcers, of course, say nothing, even as the truck slows the side view way down. Twice.
No points, lost a timeout, and turned the ball over. Not a good sequence for the Bears.

A Cutler pass hits LaRon Landry in the head, and the ball pops waaaaaaaay up (25 feet?) and backwards about 15 yards, where Chris Williams (LG) catches it and goes to the ground for a gain of 4 yards. Unfortunately for the Bears, they needed 14 to convert.

Roethlisberger took a draw into the endzone but also lost the ball. Ruled a touchdown on the field, but now being challenged.
My impression in real time was that he fumbled before breaking the plane. From the first couple of replays, I would say there isn't enough to overturn, though.

Overturned, but no clear evidence of who recovered the ball, so the Steelers get the ball inside the one. From what I can tell from the tv replays, that appears to be the right call.

Except that the TD was called immediately (Also quite evident on the replays). If the play is called dead (as a TD call does), before a recovery, the ball goes back to the spot of the fumble, and to the fumbling team. The call was the right call.

Ugly Index?

Is there a statistical way to prove that this Redskins Bears game is the ugliest game of all time? Something like (total fumbles + INTs + drops + penalties)/(total first downs)?
What would be the best statistical way to measure the ugliest game?
Actually, this might not be the ugliest game ever, but it has got to rank in a separate category of "most incompetent/least well executed." I feel like every skill player on each team has post-concussion symptoms.

Crazy ruling in MIami...
Rothlisberger runs for a TD then fumbles. Miami challenges, its ruled a fumble. Officials look, then rule that yes it was a fumble, but they can't determine who recovered it. So Pittsburgh ball at the half yard line. Pittsburgh then goes to kick the go-ahead FG on 4th down.
Why officials didn't sort out what happened after the fumble....

Teams need a way to punish players when appropriate, but the Titans ended up punishing everybody—their team, and their fans—when they suspend a starter for two quarters. If they ended up losing, they would also be punishing every fan in Washington, New York, and Dallas.
Remember in 2005 when the Charges suspended Antonio Gates for the first game of the season and lost to Dallas on the last play, and then missed the playoffs by 1 game that year?

Not really an over reaction. This season was Lovie's last chance to show some thing. They fired both coordinators, went and spent a bunch of money on free agents and all of their "star" players started the season healthy.
Granted, it's not really Lovie's fault that he's been handed one of the worst offensive lines in the modern NFL, but he and Jerry Angelo have both got to go. The Bears were lucky to start 4-1. They'll be lucky to finish above 7-9.

I believe he played 3 quarters - his first touchdown was in the second quarter. My mind was more blown by the fact that the Eagles kept covering him with Ellis Hobbs or single coverage by a safety (then again, the way Hobbs was covering, the single safety situations could well have been double coverage)- I honestly think leaving him completely uncovered and blitzing that DB every play would have had better results.
Of course, the coverage wasn't the only major problem which the Eagles failed to correct, there were several plays prior to the fumbled hand-off in which a DT came straight into the backfield, seemingly untouched; Kolb usually did a good job just to get rid of the football in those situations (although he may have thrown the early interception on such a play).

The Ravens defenders picked up the runner and were carrying him backwards, Ray Lewis took away the ball, no whistle, Bills get a 15 yard penalty, and the Ravens get a nice easy FG to win.
I'm inclined to think that his forward progress was stopped and the play should've been dead.

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread

The WR was lifted off the ground, but it also looked like some of the Bills lineman were pushing the pile forward while the ball was being ripped out of his hands. I don't know the rules here, I thought the Ravens were lucky to get the fumble.
What a travesty of a defensive performance for the Ravens though. Even with 2 Ed Reed picks, the secondary looked putrid. Fabian Washington couldn't cover or tackle, I think he was benched after giving up a TD in the 4th Quarter. Dewan Landry also is a terrible, I don't know why he plays at this point.

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread

The pittsburgh call was correct. The play is dead when the ref signals touchdown. Unless a Miami player demonstrates clear possession before the call (which can't be established from the video), the ball goes back to the spot it was fumbled. Pittsburgh did get lucky that the ref signaled for a TD, instead of a fumble, but on the bottom of that pile there is no telling who comes up with the ball.
217
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
by t.d. :: Sun, 10/24/2010 - 6:14pm
and the Baltimore call was also technically correct, as forward progress being stopped is a judgment call, and the whistle never blew. They were still both awful calls. Technically speaking, though, the Pittsburgh call was incorrect, as they signaled a touchdown when the player hadn't crossed the goal line with possession of the ball , which is generally looked on as incorrect, unless you know some rules I don't

If by dead at the spot you mean the play is whistled dead and the offense retains possession, I think it would take a lot of excitement out of the game. I admit that interceptions feel like more legitimate plays than fumbles, but the sudden shifts in momentum provided by turnovers is a big part of what makes football so exciting, and fumbles are a part of that. It's devastating when you lose one, but it lifts you out of your chair when your team gets one at just the right time.

thats whats sad about this. people are so blinded by their own incentives that they are unabled to report what actually happened. Clearly a fumble yet everyone is in agreement that the refs didnt make a mistake. What is going on here!?

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
by B :: Sun, 10/24/2010 - 5:32pm
No, the refs are still responsible for their mistakes, but the Chargers still have themselves to blame for not trying to recover the ball, and letting the Patriots run it back to the 8.
Edit: Fortune favors the well-prepared. Unsurprisingly, Norv's team is not well-prepared.

You can't possibly make the argument that the NFL is out to get the chargers. Not unless you also argue that the entire San diego football team is also in on the conspiracy. They are a joke of a football team. They don't play to the whistle. They can't catch a short pass. They've already turned it over THREE other times and its not even out of the first half. They are like a comedy troupe.

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread

So San Diego has a failed onsides kick, a turnover where the reciver vontarily gives the ball up thinking the play was over, and a swing pass incompletion that's ruled a fumble where San Diego doesn't bother to try and recover. Some iffy c alls, but San Diego is the only reason New England is even in the game.

Wow. The Chargers are something to behold. Not only do they commit multiple mental mistakes, they throw in some physical ones as well. And, after being too dumb to cover a swing pass that might be a lateral (and was called as such), they then don't cover up the ball when Brady's hit as he throws and the ball goes straight up in the air! Yeah, I know it was an incomplete pass, and they probably heard the whistle, but really ... after not playing the game on the lateral, you'd think Norv would have yelled at the half and gotten them to play the ball. He really does lack some fundamental quality. I am not sure what it is. They scheme well, they're rushing Brady, they are moving the ball, yet if you look at the score, it's not even close.
Pats are just now getting the offense into gear. It's likely too late for SD. Just wow. This is really bad football by one team, and you can't blame NE -- they can just let SD piss away play after play.

The official explanation on the Pittsburgh fumble doesn't make sense.
"We didn't have clear evidence of the defense recovering the fumble."
Okay, so it's a TD, the offense recovered!
What?! Isn't it the same clear evidence always needed to determine a fumble recovery at the bottom of the pile. So did the officials not sort out the dog-pile? I find that hard to believe, and this is the issue.
NFL fans were told, that this type of play "whistle blown dead, fumble recovery" would never be a problem again. That the officials would determine who had the ball at the end of the play regardless. Yet they somehow don't think that two Dolphins jumping on the ball and the Dolphins coming out of the pile was "clear evidence"?
For those who watched the broadcast, was it clear the Dolphins recovered the fumble? Did the officials just not sort out the fumble recovery? What the heck happened?! It's either a TD or a fumble into the end zone that is a TD or a touchback.
257
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
by Cloqwerq :: Sun, 10/24/2010 - 8:28pm
Agreed. If Miami comes up with football after sorting out the pile it should be there ball. It shouldn't matter if the officials couldn't clearly see who got down on the ball first. What matters is what team comes out of the pile with the ball. That's why you see guys struggling to strip the ball from a man down on the ball, so they can come out with it.

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread

Rothlisberger claims he had it under the pile, then gave it up when the official told him it was a TD.
I really think this ought to be like the questionable fumble calls, let the play continue then determine later. In this case it means sort it out like a fumble.

Packers line up for Field Goal... then change formation to an obvious attempt to pick it up. This isn't a fake in that the formation has changed.
Why Minnesota doesn't call timeout I don't know. The Packers have Matt Flynn in, and a wide open receiver for an easy TD.... and he falls down.

The rule is clear that if it moves when it touches the ground, it's not a catch. It was moving enough that that doesn't count as possession. Doesn't always seem fair, but it's easy to imagine cases where it would matter.
It wasn't all the way in his hands... kind of down below the meat of the thumbs. If he had it squarely in his palms it probably wouldn't have been jostled like that.

I'd blame the play calling. AP ripping off yardage all that drive.

Hold on... Collinsworth just cited "his wife had an emergency C-section this week" as one of the reasons Woodson was distracted when prepping for this game. So... he had a kid? He had a kid a few days ago, and a premature one at that if an emergency C-section was necessary, and YOU DON'T MENTION THIS WHEN TALKING ABOUT DISTRACTIONS?

How does the ref miss that call? He was standing right there, and didn't notice there's only one foot in bounds. I know the review will fix his mistake, but still.

Can't believed they called it a TD in the first place.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Fox predictably assigns Thom Brennaman and Troy Aikman to call the Redskins game. Why does Fox hate their viewers?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
We have an Albert Haynesworth sighting! Then again, it is the Bears, so the inanimate carbon rod probably could have made that sack.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Albert Haynesworth earns a sack by bull-rushing Chris Williams into Jay Cutler. Haynesworth literally did not touch Cutler to get the sack; he just launched Williams into Cutler so forcefully that Cutler just went straight down.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Buccaneers recovers a fumble on STLs 6 yard-line. First-and-10: end zone fade to Winslow --> ticky-tack OPI. 1st-20: Holding, Offense. 1st-30: Mega-sack for a loss of about 9. TO, Bucs, facing a 2nd and 39.
Cue Yakety Sax.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
WOW. Awesome.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I see on the following 3rd and 34 they completed a 16 yard pass, and the receiver promptly fumbled. It seems unjust that that drive ended with them scoring, they deserved to lose points.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Two blitzing Bears come in clean on a play-action rollout. DJ Moore tries to wrap up McNabb, but McNabb still tries to get a throw off. Israel Idonije makes a very heads-up play by getting his hands up to deflect it, and Moore fields the pop-up and has a very easy path for a score.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Stellar 24-yard touchdown throw from McNabb to Moss. If Torain keeps running as hard as he has the past few weeks and does as well in blitz pick-up as he did on that play, then he's a keeper.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Redskins are moving the ball at will against the Bears.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Bills are up on the Ravens 10-3. What is going on here?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Bears have already tried their "10 on 11" wildcat play, where Cutler lines up wide right and stands there, watching the play go for minus-4 yards.
I think they're setting the whole league up. I predict a 60-yard bomb from Hester to Cutler in week 11.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Amazing--now Cutler is looking to get sacked.
The O-line collapses, and Cutler looks to be wrapped up, but somehow he escapes. Instead of getting rid of the ball or running up the field, he finds the nearest defender and runs right at him.
Despite the early pick-6, this is looking like a long night for my Bears.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
To be fair, McIntosh had coverage in the flat, and Cutler probably expected McIntosh to follow the receiver (Kellen Davis?) when he turned upfield. It was pretty funny, though.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Not only that, but in 90% of NFL games it would have been called in the grasp before the fumble occurred as Ben was standing held at the legs and upper body for 2-3 seconds.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Maybe 15 years ago. Hardly ever see an in the grasp call these days.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Redskins rush 7, somehow Cutler evades the pressure and scrambles out of the pocket, directly into the arms of Rocky McIntosh for another sack. He could have gone anywhere except right there. Cutler reminds me of Jeff George--a kid with great physical skill, who ends up just sucking.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Cutler sacked by a four man rush on 3rd and 15.
Does Jay Cutler owe money to the left tackle or something?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Is it just me, or does it seem like players in the WAS-CHI game have been losing their footing with unusual frequency?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Thanks to Troy Aikman, I now know that Hines Ward is not only a great receiving receiver, but he's also a great blocking receiver!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
But... Aikman's not even doing the Steelers game.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Aikman's stupidity know no borders.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I know. He made that comment after a "Game Break" that showed Ward's TD. Also, what Ninjalectual said.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Steven Jackson is singlehandidly killing the Bucs. Ronde Barber looks like the best run-defender on the team - ugh.
Bradford misses a wide open TE in the endzone, and is nearly picked. Next play: Bradford to Amendola for the touch.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I think the Tampa Bay offensive line deserves credit for their part in nearly losing this game.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Aikman just confused the Redskins with the Bears. He was, however, correct in informing us that the Bears played defense on the last series.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Roddy White has a 157 yards on 6 catches.
There's 11 minutes left in the 2nd quarter.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Redskins are punting so far away from Hester, I swear one of them will make it into Lake Michigan.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Albert Haynesworth just destroys a Bears' run on 3rd and 1, dropping Chester Taylor for a 5-yard loss.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
And the Bears can't convert on 3rd and half a yard (nice push by Haynsworth), making them 0 for the last 27 on 3rd down when Cutler is the QB. They should just punt it on 3rd and avoid the sack count.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Devin Hester decides to make an over-the-shoulder catch on a punt return ... at his own five-yard line. Interesting choice.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Roethlisberger just completed a bomb to Mike Wallace for a TD. They just missed on one earlier in the game. This could end up being a very long day for Miami's secondary.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
TD's on consecutive throws by Ben.
How many times has that happened?
That would be an interesting piece of trivia.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I'd be surprised if someone hasn't done it three times...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Nice trick play by the Eagles there, with Kolb lining up as a wide receiver, taking the ball in a "reverse" and throwing downfield. The ball is nearly intercepted, but Cooper steps in front of Chris Hope's sure interception to make the catch.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Maclin takes the shotgun snap in the wildcat. Hands to McCoy, McCoy hands to Kolb on the reverse. Kolb throws a terrible duck, only to be saved by an incredible catch by Riley Cooper and a lazy effort by the Titans CB.
Hail Hydra!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Bears run into the Redskins punter on 4th and 1--where is the penalty??? I though you weren't allowed to touch the punter unless you get the ball too.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Buffalo is up 24-10. Anybody watching who can say whether they are actually legitimately outplaying the Ravens?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Early in the game, I was thinking that Flacco was starting to look like his usual self again... but I guess he's not having that good a game (I just have the Red Zone look ins). Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick looks like a real NFL QB.
Kelly Gregg got hurt, looked pretty bad to me, and I have to guess that has a lot to do with it.
More surprising is the 20-3 score in New Orleans.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Is Flacco's usual self good or bad?
He seems to me to be about an inconsistant a QB as there is in the NFL.
Aikman: "Mike Martz is a guy who wants to get vertical."
Antonio Cromartie is a guy who wants to get horizontal!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Will Smith is a guy who wants to get jiggy.
Hail Hydra!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
How can Fitzpatrick be 12/16 for 181 3td 0int on the road against BAL. That makes no sense at all...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Henne-to-Bess TD. Bess made a great play after the catch and broke two tackles to get in.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
And with the score then at 17-15 and 1:50 to go in the first half, Miami kicks the extra point? What?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Absolutely the right thing to do. Don't chase the points early in the game. I hate it when they do it anytime before around halfway through the 4th quarter....
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Where've we seen this before?
Under pressure, QB (Todd Bouman in this case) chucks one up for grabs into the end zone. A bit of fighting occurs and bam, free first and goal at the one.
This was especially awful, because they called it on Carr, who was yanked down by the jersey by Mike Sims-Walker.
Awful, awful call.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
On 3rd and 10 from the 30 with about 30 seconds left in the half, Brandon Carr gets royally screwed on a DPI call in the end zone while defending Mike Sims-Walker. Carr made the slightest bit of contact, then Sims-Walker threw Carr down by the jersey.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
So.. Is Gonzo inactive? My fantasy team is sputtering.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Chris Long stripsackes Freeman.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Flacco just took a dumb sack trying to make something out of nothing, turned a 5 yard sack into like a 15 yard one. Ruled a fumble on the field, but it's going to be overturned.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Miami's defense is fired up after the great TD.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Phillip Buchannon does not understand how to play a zone. He's been great this year in man-to-man, but he is literally a hole-in-zone.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Bears' offense gets on the board with a nice drive consisting of a lot of quick slants and hitches. I was wondering when Martz would realize that they could get an easy 5-7 yards every play by doing that...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Amazing what happens when you have to wait for a play to develop. Now we just need Olsen to hang on to the ball when he gets a quick slant or out.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
*I meant don't have to wait
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I don't know if you were including me in the "we" of that sentence, but I am most certainly not rooting for the Bears in this game. :)
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I learned something today. The transitive property doesn't work for in bounds vs out of bounds. If a player comes down on top of a player who's in bounds, then goes out of bounds before touching the ground, it's out of bounds.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
As a Redskins' fan, it's still pretty weird seeing Jim Zorn on the Ravens' sideline.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
As a Redskins' fan, it was pretty weird seeing Jim Zorn on the Redskins' sideline.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
An extremely good point.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Every time the Redskins get beat this year on a long pass on broken coverage, Aikman chimes in, "that was actually good coverage." Uh, no Troy, it wasn't.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Well, at the Redskins' defense had some semblance of competency for about 25 minutes of game time ... it was fun while it lasted!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread

Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Lovie Smith wastes a timeout losing a challenge about a downed runner, then the very next play doesn't challenge a turnover when it seemed pretty clear that even after being hit by Haynesworth, Cutler reached out with the ball and broke the plane.
The announcers, of course, say nothing, even as the truck slows the side view way down. Twice.
No points, lost a timeout, and turned the ball over. Not a good sequence for the Bears.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Lovie is batting ~.200 on challenges, and he's batting even worse on non-challenges.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I'm not sure there is a worse coach in football than Lovie Smith when it comes to challenges.
The thing is, after the call was upheld, you just knew they weren't going to score.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Scott Hansen on Redzone made a good point that the play clock was running down and they might have had to call a timeout anyways.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Wow.
What else is there to say?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Chicago's 2nd pick-6 is nullified on a delay-of-game (no play). It seems like teams have been benefiting from committing penalties more often this year than any other.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Roethlisberger threw an incomplete pass from two yards past the line of scrimmage. Pittsburgh kicks a field goal. It certainly feels like the Steelers have dominated the game and yet they're only up 4.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Aaron Smith is out for the Steelers. All they've announced in the game is that it's an "arm injury" and he will not return today.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Alex Smith is out for the 49ers. This happened a while ago, but nobody cared.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
So much for the PIT SB run: Aaron Smith reportedly has torn tricepts tendon, and may be out for the season. One of the 3 players they can't really replace, it was amazing how the complexion of the game changed when he went out.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
While losing Polamalu definitely hurt the Steelers, losing Smith was almost as bad. If he's gone for the rest of this year, Hood is going to have to accelerate his development.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I feel sorry for Buffalo. They lose a 14-point lead in no time at all . . . and it's not a surprise.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Bills are still the Bills... the fumbled kick return (followed by the transitive property interception that wasn't) lets the Ravens close before half, and a flea flicker puts the Ravens ahead.
Pretty play, but it seems like a waste to have to use it against the Bills. It's not like they've been having any trouble scoring using a normal offense.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I guess I don't understand the whole "going to the ground" celebration thing. It's a penalty for Columbo to fall down, it's a penalty to kneel to pray, but it's not a penalty for DeAngelo Hall to slide on both knees in the back of the end zone to kneel in his celebration?
Cincinatti 25-24 Atlanta (1:16 left in the 3rd)
...the heck happened to Atlanta after halftime?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Browns just rushed TWO and still left a guy uncovered within a few yards of the line of scrimmage. Touchdown. The Saints are probably still going to win this game.
My friend argues that the nose didn't rush, and thus they rushed ONE. I'm still going to call it two. And 9 guys covering a short field weren't even close to the guy.
D Linemen aren't the greatest at zone coverage.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I find this odd: I think the pink stuff looks really bad with the Steelers' uniforms, but I really like it on Tomlin's hat.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Redskins have had some serious fumble luck in the second half: three fumbles (two by CHI, one by WAS), all recovered by Washington. Two of those -- one by each team -- came inside the Redskins' 10.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Of course, not even five minutes after I post this, Torain fumbles in the red zone and the Bears recover...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Redskins now 4/5 on fumbles after Cooley fumbles two plays later. Cooley alertly bats the ball out of bounds, happily exchanging a 10-yard penalty in exchange for maintaining possession.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
And as I write that, McNabb gets stripped, and the Redskins have now recovered 5 of 6 fumbles in the half. Gano then knocks a 37-yarder off the upright.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Anyone who's watching the game: WTF are the Chiefs thinking going for it on 4th and 3 from well within FG territory when a FG makes it a two-possession game??
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Cincinnatti just tried and failed on its second two-point attempt of the third quarter.
The announcer just pointed out that "one point doesn't really help you."
Meanwhile Atlanta has already put 24 points on the board and is very likely to score again, rendering your third-quarter point-diff irrelevant. And now the Bengals are only up by one point instead of three.
KICK THE PAT, MORANS!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Bears get outplayed in the first half, they lead.
Bears take over in the second half, they start losing.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I wouldn't say they "took over." They've had five giveaways in the second half, and there's still 10 minutes left in the 4th quarter.
The Bears' defense has played better since the 2nd quarter, and the Bears' offense has been able to move the ball some since late in the 2nd quarter, but both teams have made their share of mistakes.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
"Took over" might be too strong a term. Still, as soon as they started playing better, they've screwed the pooch.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Is any announcer proven wrong by the video immediately after speaking as often as Steve Beurlein?
"Hit so hard his helmet came off... and those helmets are strapped on tight."
(Ray Rice slides his helmet on, which is so loose it doesn't even touch either side of his head.)
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
And Cutler from last year returns. Int #3.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Something in wrong in Chicago. I've never seen both teams dropping the football on the ground so often. This is getting ridiculous.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
You know it's bad when there are two more fumbles within five minutes after you post that comment...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
DeAngelo Hall suddenly looks appropriately paid. Even Haynesworth has made some plays, but I don't think he'll ever not be overpaid on this contract.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
And like that, Atlanta scores a TD early in the 4th quarter to take the lead. I hope you don't miss those two points you threw away, Marvin Lewis!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
This Bears/Redskin game defines the Lovie Smith era in a nutshell. From the momentous "crown their asses" moment to Jay Cutler getting sacked a bazillion times in the first half against the Giants, never a dull moment.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
A Cutler pass hits LaRon Landry in the head, and the ball pops waaaaaaaay up (25 feet?) and backwards about 15 yards, where Chris Williams (LG) catches it and goes to the ground for a gain of 4 yards. Unfortunately for the Bears, they needed 14 to convert.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Cutler to Chris Williams for 4 yards by way of Laron Landry's noggin.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Roethlisberger took a draw into the endzone but also lost the ball. Ruled a touchdown on the field, but now being challenged.
My impression in real time was that he fumbled before breaking the plane. From the first couple of replays, I would say there isn't enough to overturn, though.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
From the replays coming back from the commercial break, it now looks to me like this should get overturned.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Overturned, but no clear evidence of who recovered the ball, so the Steelers get the ball inside the one. From what I can tell from the tv replays, that appears to be the right call.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Alama-Francis came out of the pile with the football - that's the evidence that Miami recovered it. If the refs hadn't blown it dead as a TD instantly, they would have known. Appalling refereeing
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Another Torain fumble is recovered by Anthony Armstrong, and the Redskins have now recovered 6 of 7 fumbles in the half. I've never seen anything like this!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Newsflash: Ball in Bears-Redskins game experimental Teflon-coated model.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Idonije has lined up offsides at least 4 times this season.
Doesn't he see the blue line? /joke
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Crazy ruling in MIami...
Rothlisberger runs for a TD then fumbles. Miami challenges, its ruled a fumble. Officials look, then rule that yes it was a fumble, but they can't determine who recovered it. So Pittsburgh ball at the half yard line. Pittsburgh then goes to kick the go-ahead FG on 4th down.
Why officials didn't sort out what happened after the fumble....
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Wow, the Eagles just have no answer for Kenny Britt. For some reason the Titans didn't play him in the first half, which seems to be the only reason why the Eagles are still in the game.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
He was part of a bar fight friday morning.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Teams need a way to punish players when appropriate, but the Titans ended up punishing everybody—their team, and their fans—when they suspend a starter for two quarters. If they ended up losing, they would also be punishing every fan in Washington, New York, and Dallas.
Remember in 2005 when the Charges suspended Antonio Gates for the first game of the season and lost to Dallas on the last play, and then missed the playoffs by 1 game that year?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
But doesn't that just mean that individual actions harm groups even when not intended to harm those groups? Like if I got drunk and died in a car accident; my wife and kids would be in one hell of a situation not of their making. That's life.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Yes, life isn't always fair. But football should be.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
DeAngelo Hall now has four interceptions in the second half, one for a 92-yard TD return. I think it's safe to say that he deserves some sort of "Player of the Game" award.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
He should also buy Jay Cutler a steak dinner.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I wouldn't put it all on Cutler. One pick could've been prevented pretty easily if Hester comes back for the ball, and the TD required a fairly acrobatic one-handed catch. Even so, I agree that Cutler deserves some "credit" too.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Titans have 250 yards passing and 320 yards total offense. 225 of those are to Kenny Britt.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Saints just gave up. I've never seen anything like that.
INT by what appeared to be a DL, who walked into the end zone, without a single Saints player anywhere else on the wide screen.
This didn't happen inside the red zone or anything. He had a long way to go, and nobody chased him.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Not sure if he deserves it or not, but Lovie is done in Chicago.
Angelo deserves the boot as well.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Over react much?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
No, even though I like the guy, I think Lovie is done.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I guarantee no one gets fired until the season is over, so he's not done yet. If the Bears make the playoffs, everyone is fine.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I agree, but I don't see the Bears making the playoffs.
If they continue to limp along, he will be toast at the end of the year.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Regardless, he's not "done" until they actually play the games.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Not really an over reaction. This season was Lovie's last chance to show some thing. They fired both coordinators, went and spent a bunch of money on free agents and all of their "star" players started the season healthy.
Granted, it's not really Lovie's fault that he's been handed one of the worst offensive lines in the modern NFL, but he and Jerry Angelo have both got to go. The Bears were lucky to start 4-1. They'll be lucky to finish above 7-9.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Steelers win by one.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Fumbles in the Bears-Redskins game: 6
Fumbles recovered by the Bears: 1
Look for another both teams have negative DVOA in this game.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
There were 8 fumbles in the game, 7 in the second half.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
My mistake, you're right.
The Bears still only recovered 1. That has to be some kind of record for fumble luck.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, if you look through the comments above, you can see how stupefied I was by the whole spectacle as it developed. :)
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Cadillac Williams TD catch, last minute, probably wins the game for Tampa. Patient quarterbacking by Freeman to allow Williams to get open.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Sadly, David Carr, you are no Alex Smith.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Nice 2 minute drill being run by Fitzpatrick. I'd say AGS alert, but has to compete with Browns...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
LOL. Head linesman and referee who made the replay ruling both from Pittsburgh. Conspiracy theorists, feel free to run wild!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Cards block a Seahawks FG and get a nice runback... but the player who blocked it was offsides. Okung was injured on the drive though...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Will not return.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Buffalo ties the game with four seconds left after a nice drive by Fitzpatrick.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
So I was thinking "there cannot possibly be a worse game to watch than Bears-Redskins" until that game ended and we got "bonus" coverage of Niners-Panthers.
The NFL this season seems like one big pile of mediocre crap, plus Pittsburg and the Jets.
Is it possible to statistically prove league-wide mediocrity?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Pittsburgh from today's game, while not mediocre crap, did not look Super Bowl bound. Rather ugly win, in many ways.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Am I the only person whose mind is blown by Kenny Britt?
He's played 1 half of football, has 225 yards and 3 touchdowns. Holy cow, I thought Roddy White was having a good game.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Cant wait to see what Manning does to this D-backfield in two weeks after the birds bye. Birds dont need Sheldon Brown or Dawkins they looked great in coverage today! What a disgrace. Poor Jim Johnsons defense has turned to total s*** in no time at all.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Rain's starting to come down pretty hard in Seattle - not our usual mist - and it's affecting play. Cards threw a pick and the Hawks are dropping passes.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
...and now Hasselbeck fumbled...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
What the heck is happening in Denver? Raiders up 14-0 and in the red zone again?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Broncos offense - 2 snaps, 2 turnovers...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Pittsburgh and Baltimore both won on the backs of awful calls
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The pittsburgh call was correct. The play is dead when the ref signals touchdown. Unless a Miami player demonstrates clear possession before the call (which can't be established from the video), the ball goes back to the spot it was fumbled. Pittsburgh did get lucky that the ref signaled for a TD, instead of a fumble, but on the bottom of that pile there is no telling who comes up with the ball.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
and the Baltimore call was also technically correct, as forward progress being stopped is a judgment call, and the whistle never blew. They were still both awful calls. Technically speaking, though, the Pittsburgh call was incorrect, as they signaled a touchdown when the player hadn't crossed the goal line with possession of the ball , which is generally looked on as incorrect, unless you know some rules I don't
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I say this every year, but can someone explain why it wouldn't make football a better game to just declare fumbles dead at the spot?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Because scoop and scores are a lot of fun.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
If by dead at the spot you mean the play is whistled dead and the offense retains possession, I think it would take a lot of excitement out of the game. I admit that interceptions feel like more legitimate plays than fumbles, but the sudden shifts in momentum provided by turnovers is a big part of what makes football so exciting, and fumbles are a part of that. It's devastating when you lose one, but it lifts you out of your chair when your team gets one at just the right time.
Denver
Incredible. Denver's first offensive play: Kyle Orton throws a pick, Johnson takes it 30 yards for a touchdown. Denver's second offensive play: Thomas fumbles, Oakland recover.
Re: Denver
Oakland up 21-0, six minutes in.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
San Diego tries a surprise onsides kick. Naturally the ball hits a Patriot right in the hands and he recovers. Still, at least they're trying things on special teams.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Possibly they should master basic things like "kick off" and "punt" before attempting tricky variations?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Maybe, but it was really unlikely that the Patriots would run that kickoff back for a TD.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
That Patriot was Dane Fletcher, with whom I hung out in the 3rd grade. I mention this because I know you care deeply...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Cardinals just had a 7 yard punt.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
"Great idea, but the kick was not executed to uh, to the, to the uh perfection, I think that's how you say it."
I hate Phil Simms.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Patriots D actually does something good on 3rd and long!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
A little more than a quarter in, Max Hall 1-8 for 3 yards and a pick.
It's pretty ugly.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
WTF is going on in Denver? Raiders up 24-0?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Isn't there a rule about giving yourself up?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
That's what I thought
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Broncos should just spare their fans and forfeit.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The Dolphins got screwed royally, and COLT MCCOY JUST WINS
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Wait, I don't understand... did Colt McCoy score one of those defensive touchdowns?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Seriously, during the next comercialbreak, you should go to NFL.com and read the play-by-play of OAK-DEN. It must be amazing if not hilarious to a neutral observer.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I've been keeping a tab dedicated to it from the moment I noticed it was 21-0 only 7 minutes in. Truly astounding...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Dan Fouts compares the left side of Oaklands offensive line to when Gene Upshaw and Art Shell was in charge. Ugh. Gene must be spinning in his grave. Still it's probably a testament to how bad the Broncos D is.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
McFadden looks like the guy they meant to draft several years ago for the Raiders.
Just scored on a great individual effort to make it 31-0. Broncos blitzed and they dumped it to him on a screen. The O Linemen leading him didn't actually bother to block anyone, so McFadden just ran over Perrish Cox to score anyway.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
He ran by Perrish Cox, and over Reynaldo Hill, I think
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Wow...the Chargers continue to play Norvelous football. We now have a backwards pass that was incomplete, but the Pats recovered. It's now being reviewed.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Jacob Hester doesn't even think about it; he just stands there watching the ball roll.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
pass was forward but its not ruled incomplete. San diego screwed by refs again. New england gets the benefit of the doubt again. I wish Goodell was a chargers fan instead of a patriots fan.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Whatever. The Chargers should know to play to the whistle. It's their fault for not even bothering to pick up the ball. With a swing pass like that, they have to know that any incomplete pass could be ruled a fumble.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
so the chargers should be held accountable and not the refs. makes sense.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
That's a 50/50 call that's easy to miss. Yes players should be responsible for making sure the refs don't have a chance to make a poor call.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
50/50 call? Technology shows it was atleast half a yard forward. Thats much more proof than most reviewed plays. As im typing this they also get called for a phantom pass interference. Now the patriots have more yards on penalties than they do actual yardage. Refs are really pushing for a patriots win. Wheres donoghy when you need him
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I was talking about the call on the field. Which is about 50/50.
If Hester has the slightest awareness that's he's playing a football game, he would have just fallen on it, and it wouldn't have mattered what the refs called. In fact the fumble would have been beneficial as they would have got a few yards.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
but its still a bad call by the refs. Just one person say it. Thats all im looking for.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
It was a bad call, but there are degrees of badness. This is hardly the worst call ever.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
i agree. definately not worst call ever. but it was still a clear call. Thank you for being the first to acknowledge reality. Thats more than we can say about big hairy andy.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
What exactly do I have to do with this?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
thats whats sad about this. people are so blinded by their own incentives that they are unabled to report what actually happened. Clearly a fumble yet everyone is in agreement that the refs didnt make a mistake. What is going on here!?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
No, the refs are still responsible for their mistakes, but the Chargers still have themselves to blame for not trying to recover the ball, and letting the Patriots run it back to the 8.
Edit: Fortune favors the well-prepared. Unsurprisingly, Norv's team is not well-prepared.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
You can't possibly make the argument that the NFL is out to get the chargers. Not unless you also argue that the entire San diego football team is also in on the conspiracy. They are a joke of a football team. They don't play to the whistle. They can't catch a short pass. They've already turned it over THREE other times and its not even out of the first half. They are like a comedy troupe.
San Diego
Are the San Diego players trying to get Norv fired, General Smith fired, or what? What is going on?
Crazy mental and discipline errors every single week.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
On the plus side, they've only punted once all day!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Another turnover, Raiders back in the red zone.
I'm going to be very upset if they don't score 50.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Today I started Brandon Lloyd over Hines Ward.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Still a long way to go.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
... and I started Lee Evans over Eddie Royal. This is why fantasy football is such a crapshoot. I wouldn't have even had Lee Evans on my team if I hadn't let my wife do my draft so that i could play pickup basketball.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
i started chris ivory over mcfadden......
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
50! Woohoo!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
This just in: Oakland 52, Denver 14. And we've still got 20 minutes left on the clock.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Still got a quarter left and we're at 59. If the Raiders fail to break 75, I will be disappointed. Seriously though, this is scoring territory best left to college games.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
This is surreal. Orton scrambles for the first down, and fumbles right into a raider's hands. Raiders in redzone again.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Broncos Fans calling for Tebow after Orton has put up basically MVP numbers in the previous 6 games.
Maybe it's not the QB's fault the Raiders have scored 31 points thus far. Unless he's also playing safety.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
To be fair, they would be calling for Tebow no matter what. Has any football player played so well and earned so little respect as Orton?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Chargers selfdestructs
Denver goes to eleven
Which West is worse?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Hi. If you want to be able to comment here, don't call other users epithets. If I see it again here, people are getting banned. Thanks!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Thanks Bill
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
football outsiders deletes our posts where big hairy andy cant read. Why cant they allow him to look stupid?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I think this is exactly the kind of post you shouldn't be making... are you even talking about football anymore?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
This is what im talking about. Andy starts saying shit and saying i cant read and that i am not logical after i put that the chargers werent to blame for the last fumble. Ridiculous. He started not talking football. And he still doesnt think that was an incomplete pass, when it was clearly an incomplete pass. Not only is he starting shit, but hes either blind or stupid. And bill just deletes it. Im sure ill get banned for doing the same thing as big hairy andy. Thats only "fair"
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Nobody cares.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
if nobody cares then why did he delete it?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The rain has stopped for the second half. Hall might look more like an NFL QB as a result.
...well unless he continues to overthrow receivers by 20 yards...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Moreno scores, chestbumps a lineman. I understand the celebration, I mean it's huge play to make it a 5 score game.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
this is a little late, and i didnt see this game, but i was looking at the saints browns box score and noticed that the browns punter had 1 carry for 68 yards. is this correct?? did yahoo and espn both make the same mistake, or did the saints really allow a 68 yard run to the browns punter??
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
It was a great trick play.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
http://www.nfl.com/videos/new-orleans-saints/09000d5d81b91e82/K-Hodges-6...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
wow. basically sums up the saints day i guess. thanks
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Nice fake-out of the return guy during the run back. Usually it's the other way around.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Indeed they did, right through a giant gaping hole right down the middle of the field
I'd guess it was something the Browns spotted on film.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah, nice bit of coaching there. Clearly the Browns saw that return lineup on tape and drew up a play to take advantage of it. Amazing how out of position the Saints were for that.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Second muffed kick return for the Cards. Guess they're trying to keep Hall off the field one way. The Hawks are keeping them in the game though by only getting FG's.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Seahawks kicked a 31 yard fg, called back for holding.
Seahawks then kicked a 41 yard fg called back for holding.
Seahawks then kicked a 51 yard fg... flag on the play... but it was after the play. Kicking off from the 15.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
And we have a Derek Anderson sighting!
REPEAT! Derek Anderson is coming into the game. The Hall experiment was very shortlived.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Cards have been driving since the change alas. Seahawks might regret all of those points they couldn't convert.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
And Rivers fumbles the snap. Amazing.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
It's now official--the final bit of Marty Schottenheimer's influence on the team has been forgotten. It's all Norv now!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
And now it's AZ's turn for a stupid penalty on a Seahawks field goal. Rodgers-Cromartie lined up offsides on a 4th and 5. First down Seattle.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Net result of that was just another FG but it did take close to 2 minutes off the clock which could be big when you're down 12 near the end of the 3rd.
M
McFadden can't be stopped...
is this is end of the Josh McDaniels era?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
So is Denver trying to get McDaniels fired today?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
59-14. The one time it actually does make sense to play your backup QBs, Orton is still out there getting sacked. We'll see if they make a change for the 4th.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
We still have an entire quarter to play in Denver...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Hey we got a Rock Cartwright sighting, as Oakland already has three RBs ahead of him who have scored...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
sheez... even when Oakland punts.... they punt it to the 1...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Awesome! Belichick 4th quarter 4th and short redux!!
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
San Diego makes it interesting, onside kick, TD... then almost get fumble return for TD... but out of bounds.
So 2 minute warning, 4th and 1... and Bellichek is going for it.
As someone stuck in a 1 pt fantasy game with my opponent having Creighton I approve this move.
But is this just like last year vs Colts? Awful lot of respect for Norv's offense there...
Fourth And One
We have another Fourth And One sighting in San Diego.
Awful execution, poor play call.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
He didn't make it! Ran to side, not up middle.
Chargers can win this. (hopefully with someone other than Creighton)
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Why run outside there?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I don't like the Chargers play calling. Should have ran (probably a draw) on 2nd down.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Lining up to kick a game-tying FG at end of regulation, Pats out of timeouts.... Chargers call timeout with 28 seconds lefet. Was the playclock running out? don't think so... Why not let it run down farther...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
There were two seconds left on the playclock when TO was called.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
....and chargers false start, pushing it back to 50+ yards....
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Special, special, special teams.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
DOINK. Bet 5 yards would've helped.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Did you really think SD was going to actually execute something in that game today? He would have missed from 25 yards.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
SomeTHING, no.
SomeONE, maybe.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I thought there was a better chance of Rivers converting than there was of Brown making a long kick under pressure.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The way that kick was going, it probably goes in if the kick is 5 yards away since it was tailing back to the upright.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Orton is STILL playing???? As a fan who never ever wanted to see Tebow on the field before, I'd like to see a little Tebow for a change please.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
And another special teams coach is out of a job.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
------------------------------------------------------------
Always looking to learn more about the game. Always.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Rothlisberger claims he had it under the pile, then gave it up when the official told him it was a TD.
I really think this ought to be like the questionable fumble calls, let the play continue then determine later. In this case it means sort it out like a fumble.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
If Roethlisberger said that, Goodell should reconsider his comments about his rehab and consider suspending him for 4 more games for lying...he wasn't even close to having possession of the ball when he lost it.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
he wasn't even close to having possession of the ball when he lost it.
Take a look at what you just said, Mr. Millen, and ask yourself if this is what you meant to say... Roethlisberger said he regained possession again under the ensuing pile. And not even Goodell suspends players for lying.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I was watching that game. I got it taped too. Its clearly Miami's ball and a touchback. Terrible non-decision giving it back to the fumbling team. Fin fans, I feel for ya.
Same crew that screwed Detroit in round 1. That ref is an idiot.
Jared Allen...
...somehow manages to intercept a screen pass. Looks like Rodgers didn't even see him.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Collinsworth: The Packers took Grant for granted.
Rodgers is having his way with the Minnesota DBs. Only an errant screen INT has stopped him but he's got first and goal again.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The commentators keep saying the Packers are working on these seem routes that the Cowboys exploited all day against the Vikings last week.
I remember the Cowboys almost throwing nothing but dump-offs and checkdowns... ok they had that one Bryant TD but that's about it...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I like the idea of a "seem route". Moss seemed like he was running a go route, but then cut back across the middle.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Hahahaha, I was trying to imagine a "seem" route as well. It's "seam," for the OP's reference. As in the imaginary seam where two zones would be stitched together.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Should've challenged - Quarless lost control of it.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
They didn't show any replays until after the extra point... nothing to look at. I know they rushed the XP but that did seem odd. Unlike this Harvin play where they immediately had the replay up.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
No comment on Joey Porter kicking Hasselbeck in the back of the head, while he was on the ground, and not only NOT being ejected but not getting a flag? I've said it before, I'll say it again, it'd be a better game with players calling their own fouls. Ridiculous.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
No comment because nobody watched that game.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Now we have a comment about it! Good work.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Packers line up for Field Goal... then change formation to an obvious attempt to pick it up. This isn't a fake in that the formation has changed.
Why Minnesota doesn't call timeout I don't know. The Packers have Matt Flynn in, and a wide open receiver for an easy TD.... and he falls down.
Vikings dodge a bullet and take over on downs.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Late hit out of bounds should be challengeable.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I can't fathom replay calls anymore.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I don't know how that can't be a catch.
That ball was stuck to his chest the entire time.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
It hit the ground and moved. Seemed fairly obvious to me.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The ball moved, but was there any time it wasn't in his possession?
A receiver can have possession on a moving ball.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
The rule is clear that if it moves when it touches the ground, it's not a catch. It was moving enough that that doesn't count as possession. Doesn't always seem fair, but it's easy to imagine cases where it would matter.
It wasn't all the way in his hands... kind of down below the meat of the thumbs. If he had it squarely in his palms it probably wouldn't have been jostled like that.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I honestly don't know.
It moved, but it didn't shift, if that makes any sense.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Moss pissed at Childress.... they have the ball, 25 seconds, own 38.... and Childress lets clock run out. I'm 100% with Moss here. Way to show confidence in your team, Chilly...
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
That was a Farvtastic Favre by the Ol' Amateur Photographer.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Why didn't Favre just run forward immediately after the snap? There were no Packers anywhere near the middle of the field - 4 yards should have been a snap .
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
There have been a lot of plays this year when he could've stepped forward to avoid pressure but didn't. It happened several times in the Miami game. Everyone blamed his tackles and protection, of course.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Favre throws yet another stupid INT. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Favre hurt, won't come out, throws a feeble pick six. Last two passes he threw picks, he was hit as he threw, threw it anyway.
At this point should they pull him? I doubt Childress could if he wanted to....
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
ok maybe that was over-reacting.
Still feel uneasy about Favre back there.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Yes, Collinsworth. If Nelson hadn't stopped running, he could have caught that ball. Out of bounds, but still caught it.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
What's the rule on forward progress when a receiver is driven back as he's catching the ball? Does he need to get both feet down before he can get forward progress (meaning that the spot should be where the ball is when his second foot hits the ground)?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I think the point at which he has possession is the spot of the ball. Don't quote me on that though.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Yeah. Sometimes they even give them that if the receiver takes several steps and curls and tries to run sideways a bit before going forward. That Jennings spot was pretty rare in that they didn't give him the benefit of the doubt. They almost always give them that yardage.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
So is Collinsworth going to excuse every bad throw of Favre and blame the receivers?
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
I'd blame the play calling. AP ripping off yardage all that drive.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
"I was corrupt before I had power!" - Random
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
In every loss the Vikings have this year, Favre has had a chance for a game-winning drive.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
How does the ref miss that call? He was standing right there, and didn't notice there's only one foot in bounds. I know the review will fix his mistake, but still.
Re: Week 7 Open Discussion Thread
Can't believed they called it a TD in the first place.
