I'm about to head out to watch Notre Dame and Boston College slug it out in what can best be described as a driving mist, currently. Haven't had my eyes on too many of the early games yet (mostly OSU/Minn), but Pitt is currently rolling over South Florida in a bit of a surprise. Connecticut hanging tough at West Virginia.
Watching the TENN-ALA game, I've come up with a theory on icing the kicker. The best way to ice the kicker is to NOT call a timeout. Nowadays kickers are all expecting the timeout, so calling it only
OMG CODY
conforms to their expectations. What would be more effective is if you don't call it and all of a sudden kickers are thinking "oh shit, I'm actually going to have to kick this".
I dont understand Tennessee's decision to let the clock run down instead of trying to get closer before the final FG try. Their kicker was already short from 47 and had a 43 yard FG blocked, so why settle for 44 yard try?
I just got home from Spartan Stadium. That was one crushing loss. In one play, MSU went from legit big ten title contender to realistically the champ sports bowl at best.
Wow, was that one hard hitting game. Frankly, I blame the bulk of the loss on the MSU coaching staff. They almost lost the Michigan game choosing the play "prevent" three down lineman defense, and this time it did loose the game. They couldn't get pressure, and MSU's secondary simply cannot hold up indefinitely, and it led to two big plays that got them inside the 30. I whole heartedly believe MSU wins the game if the rush four.
I only saw the play once at game speed, so I would like to inquire about the unnecessary roughness penalty called against MSU. There was no replay, and I am admittedly very biased, but it certainly looked like the MSU player just read the play, and legally crushed the guy, and the refs decided since the Iowa player was hurt, it was a penalty. I didn't see any leading with the helmet or blow to the head. I only saw it once at game speed though. Can anyone shed some light as to whether the penalty was deserved?
Congrats to Iowa though for pulling out the victory. Objectively, it was an incredible game.
Oh, and has anyone heard anything about the Iowa player that got taken off on a stretcher? Hopefully he's OK.
Looked like it was leading with the helmet, but that call has been screwed up and interpreted differently so often this season, its hard to say that this one was particularly egregious -- except, as you say, the Iowa guy couldn't get up.

As Brian said, you don't really know what you're going to get with that penalty. He did lead with his helmet a bit and connected right at Sandeman's facemask. Could have gone either way but the timing of the flag was certainly questionable. I've also read in a couple places that he was actually called for taunting, but not sure.
Greenwood is fine and was walking around in the locker room. Definitely was a physical game. Have to respect MSU's program under Dantonio.

Michigan goes right down the field for a TD to start the game against Penn State.
Re: Week 8 Open Discussion Thread
Nebraska with 8 turnovers against Iowa State? Is that possible without simply handing them the football at times?

Fair enough.
