Call me a prude, but I don't see the humor in this. It seems very cruel, really. Have I missed something? Was this really reported in the LA Times and not The Onion?
Cruel how? In whose distress is Carroll taking delight? I'll grant you poor taste perhaps, but not cruelty.
(I found it rather amusing.)
I don't want to take the time to register on the site, can anybody sum up the article in a sentence?
With the blessings of the coaching staff, LenDale White faked his own suicide in front of the entire team.
If the story is true, Carroll let his players think that they had seen one of their teammates kill himself by leaping off of a six-story building. I would find that traumatizing and would be very angry at whoever perpetrated such an immature act. But then the article does say that most players "erupted in relieved laughter." Go figure. Maybe I simply live in a much different world than the Trojans.
Isn't this what April 1st is for?
They showed a video of it on SportsCenter. Granted, I knew what I was looking at, but it pretty clearly looked like a dummy being tossed over the side. Also, I think it disintegrated when it hit the ground, so it should have been clear right away.
The same thing happened in last week's South Park. Coincidence?
USC got into the Halloween spirit Monday as Coach Pete Carroll treated unsuspecting players and coaches to a perfectly executed trick play with help from running back LenDale White.
As the top-ranked Trojans went through stretching exercises, White irritably jawed with teammates and assistant coaches. The exchanges continued and with about 10 minutes remaining in practice, White barked at Carroll, saying he wasn't getting enough carries.
As stunned players looked on, Carroll yelled at White and told him to leave the field. White exited, followed through the gate by a group of reporters, and boarded a cart and angrily threw a pair of athletic gloves as he was whisked away.
After practice, Carroll told stunned players they could not let distractions get in the way and that the Trojans had lost players before and moved on.
Offensive line coach Pat Ruel interrupted Carroll and pointed to a six-story building beyond the practice field fence. From the top of the building, White was yelling in apparent anger.
Suddenly, a stuffed figure wearing White's No. 21 jersey fell from the rooftop, a few players gasping in disbelief while most erupted in relieved laughter.
"I thought it was real," wide-eyed long snapper Will Collins said.
White returned to the field laughing and said that Carroll had prepped him for the prank. "We wanted my teammates to really believe it," he said.
Added Carroll: "He was most convincing. He did a great job."
I guess I'd have to see the dummy. If it was extremely fake-looking,then that's funny. If not, I agree, it's poor taste.
Its a Halloween prank! Poor taste? You guys need a sense of humor... :-p
The video's now on ESPN.com. It sounds like most of the players figured out what was going on once the dummy was in the air, especially since the dummy was thrown off of the roof.
I don't tend to think of Halloween as the traditional time for that sort of prank, but whatever.
I missed South Park, but if it's from that, then I think that pushes it solidly onto the side of funny. Odd... but funny.
I'm not sure about coaches being involved in this, but it's the exact kind of humor I would expect college jocks to play on each other.
YOu'd think that if Pete Carroll and the USC coaching staff we're going to go through all that trouble they'd atleast get an inflateable dummy that was the proper skin color of Lendale White. You know. Just to REALLY make it look realistic.
You see Pete. It's this lack of preperation that gets you out of the NFL!!!!
The same thing happened in last week’s South Park. Coincidence?
Yup. The effect would have been much better had they stuffed the dummy with pig guts.
The Vikings need offensive line help, while the Bears, Lions, and Packers have significant defensive concerns.
