Giving the Ravens Wings

Apparently, it's Ravens Tuesday at Football Outsiders. Michael David Smith links to a story about Ray Lewis and the Baltimore defense and I'm pointing you to Jeffri Chadiha's column on the Baltimore offense. Chadiha believes that Derrick Mason is the missing piece to the Raven's much-maligned passing game. Granted, Mason has averaged 86 receptions and 1,153 yards the last four seasons, but he's 31 and Kyle Boller will never be mistaken for Steve McNair ... unless of course he dresses up as Steve McNair for Halloween.

I'm not sold that Boller isn't going to be a top-half QB in the next few years. I don't think Mason is THE missing piece, but I think he's a missing piece. Of Ravens that caught more than 2 passes last year, none averaged more than 12.4 yards per catch. Part of that's Boller, but part of that's their lack of receiving talent. Their leading receiver was Kevin Johnson with 35 catches. He averaged 10.7 yards per catch. Let me just repeat that - their leading receiver was Kevin Johnson.

Basilicus, is it really that hard to believe that Boller will be a top-half QB in the next few years? He was ranked 21st in DVOA last season. Is it really such a big step from 21st to 16th?

Besides, as you're so fond of pointing out, Kevin Johnson was their leading receiver. I'd imagine Derrick Mason and Todd Heap would be MORE than a big enough upgrade over that to make their QB look 5 slots better.

I'm not sold on Boller as the next coming of John Elway or Brett Favre, but a top-50% QB... I have no problem with that at all.

Double post: Besides, everyone's calling him a crappy QB after just his second year. Ask Drew Brees what, exactly, that's worth going into his third.

Now, now, Kibbles why can't you and Basilicus just get along - especially since you agree with each other ;). Read the post again, it looks like you missed the double negative in the opening sentence.

If the ravens want more offense tell them to move into a dome stadium!

i have the completely unconfirmed and unsupported suspicion that the ravens' passing game is the way it is, at least in part, because they rely on the run to such an extent that they only pass at downs-and-distances at which they're expected to pass, and which are difficult to convert besides.
