Martz Wants to Coach Rams this Season

Well, this is weird. Mike Martz's agent, Bob LaMonte, told Chris Mortensen that the coach will ask his doctors for permission to coach again. This caught the Rams off guard because LaMonte also negotiated Joe Vitt's raise, which would increase his salary to approximately $1 million for an entire season. Some Rams players have supported Vitt and his straight-shooting coaching style, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Who wants to place odds on Rams management, Joe Vitt, or Steven Jackson poisoning Martz so he isn't healthy enough to return to work?

I wonder if this is less a play to coach this year than a way of telling other teams that he's healthy for next year.

Martz isn't coming back. He's just positioning himself for a buyout of his contract.

Rumor is that the Rams FO wants a defensive minded HC. They've had enough of the Martz swiss cheese defense.

#2. Nah, everyone knows he wants to coach next year. He just wants to force the Rams hand to make him a deal so he can move on.

Someone will take a shot with him.

If you've read the article in the Prospectus, my question would by why teams like, say, Detroit aren't don't already have him on speed dial...

Yeah this is all about making it easier to get money from STl methinks.

This makes it all the funnier that the Rams had the man they wanted all along (Lovie Smith), and let him go by sticking with Martz.

The Rams should hire him back. The team is basically imploding under Vitt. It took a miracle onside kick to pull one out against the Texans.

I know Martz takes a lot of abuse and some of his in-game decisions are ... odd, but somebody in St. Louis knows how to get good QB play from guys that nobody else wants (Warner, Bulger, Jamie Martin, Fitzpatrick). That's a pretty valuable skill.

I was thinking Lovie Smith might want Martz to coach his offense. I have no question in my mind that Martz can coach an offense. And the combo Lovie defense/Martz offense was a good one.

In David Halberstam's new book on Bill Belichick he recounts a scene from the Pats/Rams SuperBowl where the Rams players are imploring him to run the ball and Martz tells them to shut up because he'll win his way.
