Roethlisberger Out vs. Packers

Ben Roethlisberger has had arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss Sunday's game against the Packers. Charlie Batch is expected to get the start behind center against Green Bay. Michael David Smith is expected to get the old Charlie Batch Lions jersey out of the mothballs, just for old time's sake.

We're one injury away from Tommy Maddox time!

I'm not sure why you brought this from a hHouston site rather than a Pgh site (my link to steelers.com), but the quoted piece misses the news that Duce will probably be Willie Parker's alter ego, as Jerome was downgraded to doubtful.

Re #1 one injury away from Tommy Maddox note that Coweher confirmed at his press conference that Randle El will be the #3.

Can you imagine Tommy Gun vs. Farve?

The two men on the field with the highest number of completed receptions might be two DB's!

NOW can I be on someone's fantasy team?!

So how long before some dude starts trying to pick up women by pretending to be Charlie Batch?

Re #5: You can be on my fantasy team. I need somebody to replace Kyle Boller.

Israel:

Do you mean that we're two injuries away from Randle El time? Or that Batch is 2nd string, Randle El is 3rd string, and Maddox is... well, trash?

by Vash (not verified) :: Thu, 11/03/2005 - 4:32pm

Batch is #2, El is #3, and our fourth-string quarterback is Chris Gardocki, who threw an excellent pass to Sean Morey last week, going by not-to-a-defender standards.

Wait, so why haven't they cut Maddox? Why are they paying him?

The Steelers may set a modern record for fewest passes attempted in this game .

mawbrew:

Nah, the Texans set that two weeks ago. Carr attempted 9 passes. That has got to be a record.

So if you wear the Batch jersey, does that mean the wife will be wearing her wedding dress?

Maddox is still on the roster. With Roethlisberger definitely out, Batch is the starter, Maddox the backup, and Randle-El the #3. (Link to official Steelers depth chart.)

the chargers threw 6 passes last year against Cleveland (completed 4).

The Packers must be real disappointed that Maddox isn't starting. It was their chance to look like an NFL-caliber defense.

Re #5:

You just might be. My two quarterbacks as of this morning were Big Ben and Josh McCown.

by Fnor (not verified) :: Thu, 11/03/2005 - 7:57pm

Roethlisberger and... oh my.

And while bashing Maddox is (really, really) fun, he's still an NFL-calibre QB, probably better than Batch. I'm not going to change my entire view based on one game.

... here's hoping I don't get another game to add to it, though....

by Ben Roethlisberger (not verified) :: Thu, 11/03/2005 - 11:59pm

Trust me, Tommy has no idea what he's doing. Which is too bad, because, while Batch can play, he has trouble staying on the field for very long, which is the real reason he was run out of Detroit and ended up in Pittsburgh.

According to NFL.com's depth chart...

Quarterback
C. Batch
T. Maddox
B. Roethlisberger (injured)
R. Rutherford

So you say I'd rather rest Hines Ward for this week in my fantasy league?
The problem is, the only backup, Boldin is injured.

I'm not sure Chris #18 what rock you have been hiding under but Green Bay's defense has been NFL caliber this season. Check the numbers...Defense 308.3 ypg (15th).

BAS -

Not to defend Chris because I do not like "haters", but around here the main metrics are DVOA and DPAR. GB is 10.5% in raw DVOA which is good enough for 26th in the league. We need to look at more than just raw yardage. Once again, they give up too many 3rd down conversions and are not generating enough turnovers.

Note that I thought they did a fine job against the triad from the Queen City. Also, Al Harris is having a Pro-Bowl caliber season.

Gotta get to work now.

by Duane (not verified) :: Fri, 11/04/2005 - 5:07pm

#25: DVOA certainly bears out that Harris is having a great year. GB's DVOA against #1 recievers ranks 3rd in the league, and that's (almost) always Harris in coverage.

I hate the guy who said this, I'm a liberal, and I LIVE IN FRANCE, but playing Green Bay without your number one QB is pretty much like going duck hunting without your accordian.
