Giants Sign Sean Landeta

Sean-freaking-Landeta has been allowed a weekend pass from the retirement home to punt for the Giants this weekend in the case that Jeff Feagles is unavailable. Of course, Jeff Feagles is only four years younger than Landeta himself. Not only is Landeta one of my favorite NFL players of all time (even when he made the move to Philadelphia), but he's the NFL's last link to the original Tecmo Bowl.

When I think of Sean Landeta, I always think of his famous whiff in the 1985 playoffs in Soldier Field, which Shaun Gayle "returned" 5 yards for a touchdown (the shortest punt return touchdown in NFL history). Good times.

and the USFL lives on.

It amuses me that the Giants bring in someone older than Feagles as an emergency backup.

And this comes just as Sean Landeta is being selected to be a finalist in the FFaSTHoF. Did Junior Seau inspire him?

What? Did Studio 54 reopen?

Is there any reason that Cleveland can't suit up Jim Brown as player/ambassador?

Instead of ROBO-PUNTER, maybe we need CYBORG-LANDETA?

5: Because he'd be the best running back on the team.

So, with Landeta returning to activity, has the USFL officially outlasted the XFL in terms of alumni?

Not likely, Mike. Landeta would have to outlast:

1) Kevin Kaesviharn
2) Mike Furrey
3) Corey Ivy

Perhaps more. But those are the decent remaining ex-XFLers, off the top of my head.

Who cares about the NFL? We now have an active player again who was in the original Tecmo Bowl.

Wait, my bad. I didn't read the preview. I thought for a second Morten Andersen was the Tecmo Bowl representative, but then I remembered New Orleans wasn't in the first one.

How many guys from Super Tecmo are still playing? Off the top of my head, I think there are:

1. Favre (backup QB for Atlanta).
2. Feagles.
3. Landeta.
4. Seau, I think...

Re: 11

Favre wasn't in the original Nintendo version of Tecmo Super Bowl. (He was in the SNES version, as the Packers QB.) Players currently on NFL rosters who were in Tecmo Super Bowl all have 17+ years of NFL experience:

Morten Andersen
Jeff Feagles
Vinny Testaverde
John Carney
Junior Seau
Ricky Proehl (just signed with the Colts)
Sean Landeta

Damn East coast bias :-). I do remember being pissed as a kid when I got the game and my team wasn't represented.

What will have the last active alum- Tecmo or RBI Baseball? Clemens and Julio Franco are still going strong...

#14: RBI Baseball. Julio Franco is shooting to play in 2010.

I bet Derrick Thomas would still be playing. I still remember when Darrell Green retired thinking that soon none of the Tecmo Super Bowlers would be left.

Although if you squint, Donovan McNabb looks a lot like QB Eagles.
