Levi Jones Headed for Surgery

Just in case you didn't learn it from Michael Lewis's new book, just in case you didn't learn it from watching the 2006 Seattle Seahawks, just in case you didn't learn it from tonight's Arizona choke job, let me remind you that the offensive line is important. So the Bengals are in some serious trouble, now that Levi Jones, one of the top left tackles in the game, needs arthroscopic knee surgery and is out for a few weeks. The Bengals have already had problems without center Rich Braham. Need I remind everyone that the Baltimore Ravens, undefeated two weeks ago, have lost twice since left guard Edwin Mulitalo went out with an injury?

Will this hurt Rudi Johnson's stats? Is it a bad time to trade for him?

I doubt you can get anywhere close to equal value for Rudi, so I wouldn't trade him. If someone wants to hand you Alexander a week or two from now, I may do it. Otherwise you're going to be getting screwed every time.

This is a huge blow for the Bengals and is coming at the worst possible time. The next four weeks the Bengals will play Julius Peppers, Mike Rucker, John Abraham, Patrick Kearny, Terrell Suggs and Shawne Merriman. Word is that Braham won't be back until after Thanksgiving, if at all. The OLine is going to get better before it gets worse. The WR are also banged up. Past CJ and Hoosh, only Antonio Chatam is healthy. Reggie McNeal figures to dress but has 0 experience at WR. Henry is gone at least this week and possibly longer with a DUI hearing coming up. Washington has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. I'd expect more of the same from the Bengals offense. They figure to not play up to their form until at least December, and possibly into 2007.

If the defense can get healthy I think they can play to an acceptable level, but that looks like an improbability for now. Jeanty will probably miss another game, but Darrell Jackson looks to return this week. The defense broke apart when he went out. Also, if Tory James is replaced by Jonathan Joseph, the defense may be able to hold the ship afloat until the offense is ready to start rolling again.

Oops meant to say the OLine is going to get much worse before it gets better

"One of the top left tackles in the game"...

Every time I read something good about Levi Jones, I remember how right after he was drafted, EVERY SINGLE PUNDIT ripped the Bengals a new one for the pick. Man, what a bunch of idiots.
