Yes, the longtime Football Outsiders mantra could become a reality. Cartwright, the Redskins return man and running back, will see the remainder of his contract with Washington voided if he keeps his kick return average over 24.0 (he's currently at 26.1). Cartwright wants more involvement in an offense -- he has only seven carries in the last two seasons -- and a contract comparable to that of Buffalo special teams ace Roscoe Parrish. We just want to see if he can somehow validate any part of his 2005 season, when he put up a rushing DVOA of 29.5% on 27 carries.

I've watched at least 2/3's of the Redskins games over the past few seasons, and I've always wondered why the coaches didn't ever decide to find out. Then last year when Ladell Betts was good I forgot about it and trusted the coaches decisions. Now this year I wonder again.
The last time I remember him getting carries on offense, he fumbled against KC in 2005 and cost the Redskins the game.
I don't mind letting him walk if contract demands are too high, in fact I thought he was a free agent after 2006 and no other teams really made a push for him.
Of course I do like him in burgandy and gold, but you have to be realistic about special teams players... he doesn't return punts too.
The Eagles could use a game-breaking kick returner....hmmmm.
Good old rock, nothing beats rock.
He'd really be an awesome pick up for Philly. Get a returner, another decent RB for depth, and insider information on a division rival.
My guess has been that he hasn't gotten a shot due to lack of blocking ability. In today's blitz whacky NFL, if you can't block, you can't be 1st or 2d string RB. Portis might be a better blitz blocker than he is RB at this point, and Betts appears to be an adequate blocker. Perhaps Cartwright is a lousy technique blocker or simply too small to be effective.
Just another area where equating DPAR with actual NFL ability is substituting what we can actually measure for what is actually important.
Another way to say this is that I've always hated that Portis trade, and I don't really care for Portis as a runner (he seldom if ever breaks a tackle), but there's no doubt the coaching staff and teammates love him, and there's no doubt he's a hell of a blocker. How important are those things? I'm not sure.
1. portis found that step he'd lost in the past two weeks. I hope he's not taking drugs.
2. Yeah he's a ridic blocking back. He took on Justin Tuck at chin level last week when Tuck came free and cocked him. Mojo did the same sort of thing to Merriman but everyone needs to relax and realize that Merriman was expecting to get cut and was way too high. J. Tuck tried to run over Portis and paid for it.
3. I doubt Cartwright has the blocking abilitiy or attitude to be an every down every game player.
Is there any precedent for a 29 year old player to go from a zero-down back to every-day back? Frankly, I thought that Cartwright was Ladell Betts insurance, and I imagine the Redskins will not be too sad if he goes elsewhere.
Rock is a guy that fans fall in love with, but I'd rather they get younger at the RB position, and bring in the next Rock Cartwright... you know, a 7th round draft pick surprisingly good special teams player who can contribute a game or two if needed.
I know the coaching staff/FO loves veterans, so you never know what will happen....
Rock Cartwright would be a good pickup for the Eagles not just because he's a kickoff returner but because he is also a good special teams gunner, and what the Eagles need even more on special teams than a kick returner is some more good ST gunners.
