Throwback Uniforms Certainly Make a Statement

In this post about Sean Taylor's wig, the Washington Post's Dan Steinberg also provides some photos of the Redskins' throwback unis, which, frankly, aren't very pretty. Kinda like the Steelers' ensemble last week, but with the added indignation of canary yellow pants. It could be worse, though. Right, Philly fans?

I don't know if this is true for the Redskins or the Eagles but the Steelers unis weren't really throwbacks in the sense that the Steelers ever worse unis like that before. They were inspired by the Steelers unis from the 60s. So, I blame the marketing team and whoever was inspired.

Those Eagles unis are just offensive. They make the Bear orange thingies look conservative.

Are those supposed to be uniforms for the Washington Redskins or for Radio Shack?

Well, the crowd in Philly should be fun to watch - especially the people who didn't get the memo.

Just imagine if the Eagles win on Sunday and that abortion of fashion design becomes their "lucky uniform." *shudder*

On the other hand...
McNabb: "They're not booing me, they're booing the uniform."

All I can say is, it's a good thing the Skins played the Eagles last week, or we'd really be in trouble.

Also, Sean Taylor is awesome.

What should the newer expansion teams wear?

Should the Ravens wear Browns uniforms?

Those Eagles unis...wow. I don't know who came up with that combo but they were obviously color blind. The Redskins unis aren't as bad...the yellow pants may be a bit much but the helmet is nice. We need a list of like the top 20 worst unis...those Eagles would have to be in the top five.

At least the Redskins' throwbacks have nearly the same color scheme as the current jerseys.

Re #8: They can't because they gave up the rights to them as part of the deal to move to Baltimore.

Maybe I'm weird, but I don't think the Redskins jerseys are bad at all. The pants are bit harsh, though.

Lombardi Argh!

I like the Eagles' throwbacks. Yeah, they're a little outre but I appreciate them for kicking over convention. They're better than the abominations the Vikings, Bengals and Bills wear every week.

#9: The colors of the Eagles uniform are Philly's city colors.

It isn't always about aesthetics.

What's so bad about those Washington unis?

The philly ones...wow. WOW. Detroit's gonna win just because of the Uni factor.

16
by mmm... sacrilicious (not verified) :: Fri, 09/21/2007 - 3:38pm

For the Redskins and the Eagles, why not? If it's just for a game or two, may as well dive into the deep end...

17
by Jimbojones (not verified) :: Fri, 09/21/2007 - 3:40pm

What's wrong with those Redskins uniforms? They're bascially the Packer rip-offs that Lombardi brought with him to Washington. Just swap the burguny for green and you're looking at Paul Hornug-wear.

by princeton73 (not verified) :: Fri, 09/21/2007 - 3:47pm

That Redskins helmet was only used for a couple years (70-71), so it's an odd one to pick.

You wanna know what makes me feel friggin OLD? When a team wears "throwwback" unis which were being used when I was in college.

by Joe T. (not verified) :: Fri, 09/21/2007 - 4:02pm

#18 - Wild guess...you were in college between the years 1970-1973.

I think the Skins opted for the Lombardi R since they had previously used the spearhead design in 2003, and we all want to forget about the Spurrier era.

Still, the feather stripe would have been cool.

Is there a sports league in the world that tries harder to bury its own history and kill off any sense of nostalgia than the NFL? Of course, as soon some team executives do try to bring back a little nostalgia, people shit all over them. I, for one, like them. Of course, I also wish the Eagles would go back to proper KELLY green, but i'm not holding my breath.

I think you just answered your own question. It bothers me that teams that wear "classic" ugly uniforms every week get a pass simply because they weren't smart enough to abandon their terrible designs decades ago.

23
by PhillyCWC (not verified) :: Fri, 09/21/2007 - 5:46pm

The bigger question, though, is if the Eagles cheerleaders also will be wearing "throwback" uniforms to 1933 - will they be dressed as flappers?

24
by Dunbar (not verified) :: Fri, 09/21/2007 - 6:12pm

I actually of like most of the Redskins throwbacks, except the yellow pants. Those are horrible.

Also, as a Steelers fan, I have to ask ... what was wrong with their 75th anniversary uniforms? I thought they were good, though not remarkably so.

The Jets throwbacks this year are pretty smooth, actually. They're wearing their old Titans unis, blue with gold trim. It's a nice color scheme. (Thank goodness they didn't decide to throw forward and bring out the awful mid-80s unis.)

Steelers wear gold, not yellow. The colors are black and gold. Oh, and that ball hit Tatum.

I wonder with these old uniforms if they looked good on black and white tv in the 50's. Could explain some of the color schemes.

37
by Pat (not verified) :: Sat, 09/22/2007 - 2:47am

I'm also kindof curious why the Eagles switched from blue and yellow to green and white. They could've eventually gotten uniforms that would've looked good (the Chargers powder blue uniforms, for instance).

Many of the early NFL franchises were based on their city colors (Steelers, Redskins, Giants specifically, Dallas somewhat as well, etc.). I don't know why Philly abandoned it.

Maybe you should get eyes checked. Steelers wear yellow. If you need to know what gold is look at Notre Dame, Saints, Army, Navy, and Colorado Buffaloes.

Throwcrap uniforms need to disappear from regular season games. Use them in the preseason only.

I can't figure out why the NFL is so dumb to not market alternative 3rd uniforms like they do in soccer. Teams make millions off this stuff and the NFL can't allow an alternate uniform color/helmet without throwing a fit? We all do it in Madden, when is the NFL owners going to get with the 21st century?

43

As a Saints fan (someone who roots for a team that actually wears black & gold) living in Pittsburgh, I have to do something that scares me a little - agree with Raiderjoe. Pittsburgh always goes on about black and gold, but the Steelers and Pirates both wear yellow. Only the Penguins actually wear gold. I've gotten into many debates with Pittsburgh fans on this (including my girlfriend), but trying to explain to them that it's yellow ruins the "black & gold" that seems to be synonomous with the Steelers here...

If the Redskins keep this up, teams wearing yellow helmets will be 6-0 this season (counting the partially yellow Philly throwbacks).

48
by Pat (not verified) :: Mon, 09/24/2007 - 12:34am

#43: 'Gold' is a color independent of sheen, and it's not yellow - it's orangish-yellow. In Web terms, it's #FFD700 vs #FFFF00 - i.e., it's a little more red (relative to green) than yellow is.

If you look at the Steelers uniforms compared to the Chargers, for instance - the Chargers have yellow. The Steelers have gold.

(More specifically, the Steelers wear the city colors, which are listed as black and gold.)

49
by Richie (not verified) :: Mon, 09/24/2007 - 1:19pm

Why are teams using throwbacks this year? Is this year some kind of anniversary?

I liked it better the first time they did throwbacks. 1994 I think, when throwbacks were rolled out for all the home teams at the same time. I think it's better if all the teams are wearing throwbacks during a week, instead of just one or two each week.

That's fun.

But I hate how teams in all sports have 3 or 4 uniform variations that they pull out randomly. I think teams should be forced to stick with 2 uniforms for the whole season. 1 road uni and 1 home uni. Period.
