If the Philadelphia Daiily News report that Jacksonville Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver is considering selling the team as a possible precursor to a franchise move to L.A. is true (Weaver has released a statement refuting the report), don't count on receiver Matt Jones making the trip. Firstcoastnews.com reports that Jones has been arrested while in a Toyota 4Runner truck, in a known drug area in Arkansas. According to the preliminary arrest report, Jones was "sitting in the back seat of the car with a white card with a white powdery substance on it, and a credit card in his other hand."
Jones has been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. Since being selected 21st overall in the 2005 NFL draft, Jones has never really impressed, and the team's off-season overhaul of its receiver corps set a tone that Jones obviously didn't hear.

Nothing like a little cocaine to go with a 67th place finish in WR DVOA!
Woohoo... The Jaguars show up in extra points! Oh... wait...
"Jones has never really impressed"
.
But isn't that the guy who is like 7'2 and runs the 40 in 2 seconds?
Just another possession receiver...
Wow, cocaine dealers take credit cards?
the jaguars are lucky they had busts with leftwich and jones in the first round and they are probably better than ever.
Your honor, yes my client appears to be guilty on the face of the evidence presented so far. But did you know.. and did you consider, that while he may be allegedly guilty... he is also very tall?
I thought cocaine was supposed to make you fast and twitchy. Guess not...
Shit, I came here to make some smart-ass remark and found them all taken!
Of course if Garrard ourperforms last year pundits will say it's "despite Jones being in the slammer" when they really mean "because Jones is in the slammer."
You know, I have a theory about why he was a disappointment... maybe he's not really tall, he was just high. Might explain his 2.7 40 yard time as well.
tall and white, and if you think that didn't matter to some folks in Jacksonville, unfortunately, it did. Thank god he's out of chances. The 'Jerry Porter is fantasy gold' contingent gets a boost...
At least cops stopped him before he could get mud on Charlie Murphy's couch
What the hell was he thinking? Cocaine is so 80's.
I never thought he'd quite get there, but yes, Jones is now a bigger bust than Travis Williamson, although Williamson consumed more cap space. Is Mike Williams on anybody's roster still? What a year 2005 was for receivers drafted in the 1st round! Dropped passes, getting fat, and getting high is quite a legacy!
Which would make Jones the 13th different Jags player arrested since the start of 2005. How do the Jags and Del Rio apparently avoid getting mentioned in discussions of off-field discipline and character-issue players?
(for comparison, the oft-ridiculed Bengals and Marvin Lewis have had 10 players arrested in the same period of time. Admittedly, Chris Henry's frequent run-ins with the law mean that the Bengals have racked up more total incidents, but the Jags are clearly not fielding a bunch of choirboys.)
Holy cow, I got curious, and looked up the recent developments in Mike Williams' career. After the Raiders reeased him last October, the Titans signed him a month later, at which time he weighed in at 271 pounds! Heck, he might have just decided to go all out, and try to make offensive tackle weight!
Well, Wikipedia now says he is all the way down to 240, so I'm sure the Pro Bowl awaits. Don't people using cocaine lose weight? Maybe he should be hanging out with Jones! Or have Williamson handle his food before meals; most of it will get dropped on the floor.
Jack Del Rio: Keep Chopping Wood!
Matt Jones: Keep Cutting Coke!
Matt Jones is the one guy I hoped would make it in the NFL. He is perhaps my favorite non-Alabama player I saw play in person. He was a reach where he was drafted, but the dude was a freaky good athlete.
How much are we talkin' here? Why didn't he just eat the stuff? Maybe Nick Kaczur can hook him up with some of his DEA friends and they can go undercover together.
He was just following Michael Irvin's advice. What's the big deal?
Reports from OTA's said that Jones was a special project of the receivers coach this Spring. I don't think this is the result he wanted.
Looks like Jax's crowded receiver roster is going to be a little less crowded.
Don't know how I turned Troy Wiliamson into Travis Williamson above; probably because the Vikings also had Travis Taylor. When you have an entire roster filled with 1st round receiver busts, it's hard to keep them straight. Anyways, Bob in Jax, if the receivers coach can get Williamson to catch the ball, that will be the most special special project ever.
This probably explains why Jones is a bust. But it's hard to tell. I think it's safe to say Jones wasn't a bad pick because he developed a completely unpredictable drug problem, but because he had a much more predictable high risk to reward probability due to the need to learn a completely alien position in the NFL.
re11 best post of day, maybe week or more, too
Matt Jones is stupid bum. guys like him is why Jaguars never win Super Bowl. Crap teams always. So what if they win 11 games or 10 or 12 in regular seaosn. team suck in playoff.s Raiders going to teach them a lesson this postseaosn. You read now. You see in January.
Raiders 27, Jafuards 13
#12: Where have you been for the past 18 years? Cocaine is always in style...it's one hell of a drug!
Jafuards new best alt spelling ... and some others.
raiderjoe,
How much did you win in the lawsuit against your mom--you know, the one filed cause she dropped you on your head?
When I saw the ESPN ranking of WR corps around the league, I said that I though the Jaguars WRs ought to be higher.
This isn't what I had in mind.
I think the Raiderjoe in #23 is an imposter.
So is sam! in 26 an imposter also, or has he decided to go back to his original username?
Just goes to show that you can call holding on every play (at least when Matt Jones was on the field).
#27 -- Awesome!
Will- Troy Williamson was mightily impressive in OTA's, running by DBs with impunity and catching everything thrown near him. Of course, I understand he did the same thing in MN. When hitting is allowed, we shall see how good the Jax receivers coaches actually are. I am eternally hopeful (it is the Summer), but I am realistic enough to know it is against the odds.
P.S. -- Antispam word "doofus"; quite fitting!
re26 Mom didnt drop me on head. Issue is typing fast sometimes and typing while drinking some times or both.
re28 Not impister. Poster was me . I dont know why I see people think I am imposter. Not smart enough to impost myself. I wrote that post realy qucik because I had somewhere to go. Also was sober at time of post so maybe it read differently to you as most of my posts are writtne when I drink and am relaxing for the night.
