Morgan Retires Before Playing with Saints

The Saints took a chance on veteran linebacker Dan Morgan, signing the former Panthers All-Pro to a one-year, $1.48 million contract on the offseason. This was to be part of New Orleans' defensive overhaul, as Morgan projected to compete with Scott Shanle on the weak side. That was the fantasy. The reality, for those who were familiar with Morgan's injury history -- he never managed to play all 16 games of a season, he had a hard time recovering from a 2007 Achilles' tendon injury, and his concussion history is truly worrisome -- was that this was a guy who really needed to think about hanging 'em up. He was a warrior in the middle of Carolina's defense for a long time, and hopefully he'll be rewarded for his service with a happy and healthy post-football life. The Saints hope to have better luck with their other former Miami linebacker off-season acquisition, ex-Jet Jonathan Vilma, who's recovering from a knee injury.

I wonder if the Saints will try and get the signing bonus back?

So far it's a seven page thread on the most popular Saints message board.

I'm tempted to check it out, but right now I'm also watching the Hornets, so if you guys don't see me here anymore, it's because my head exploded.

Hey you should link a good saints board. I like visiting other teams boards (helps when Denver's gets boring at this time of year). Would Thurman fit as a Will though? Also I donno how strong the Saints are with character... they just seem apt to take small school players with good workout numbers. Not a shot I am just saying something I noticed.

You'll need to register, but I like Saints Report.

The Saints have some leadership in the locker room, so that's not a problem.

Damn.

I hate the Spurs.

Great season by the Hornets. Everybody here in NOLA was psyched about the Hornets playoff run. Nowhere near as excited as the Saints appearance in the NFC CHampionship game, but the city was really captivated.

As for Morgan, good luck to him.

Yeah, all those concussions made me worry. I used to covet him for Indy's D back when he was drafted, and he was a warrior for Carolina, but then annually I'd notice his injuries and say hmmmm. I hope everything's working okay for him--he's still young for a typical human, but about middle-aged for an NFL vet.

It is a shame this guys career was cut short by injury.

It's sad that a guy with so much fire had such a hard time staying on the field.

Hopefully Carolina will do the right thing and give him a one-day contract to retire a Panther.

Why is that the right thing again? Who cares who a guy got his last ceremonial only, doesn't actually mean anything contract with?

At least in this case, it's not like he went and played like 4-5 years with another team. For all intents and purposes, he's retiring a Panther.
