QB Hits, Weeks 1-8

Tonight, I finally ran the quarterback hits numbers for the first time this season. It's an official stat now, but the information is hard to find -- so we bring it to you! Our count here includes hits on "non-plays" canceled by penalty, but this list is just hits after the pass, not hits plus sacks.

74-A.Kampman GB 11
69-J.Allen MIN 9
92-S.Rogers CLE 9
93-K.V.Bosch TEN 9
90-D.Dockett ARI 8
90-M.Williams HOU 8
93-D.Freeney IND 7
77-C.Jenkins GB 7
94-A.Smith ARI 7
94-D.Ware DAL 7
90-G.Adams TB 6
99-A.Carter WAS 6
94-C.Grant NO 6
91-G.White TB 6

The big step forward here belongs to Mario Williams, who had only 4 hits last year after we adjusted for scorer tendencies. Now his hits are more in line with his sacks. (Last year, Williams had way more sacks than hits; this year, he has 7 sacks and 8 hits.)

The other name that jumped out at me was Antonio Smith from Arizona. He's a big part of that improved Arizona pass rush that helped the Cardinals to the top of the division. Smith has zero sacks this year, so perhaps Arizona fans don't realize how well he's played. However, Smith also already has more quarterback hits (7) than he did last year (5). Those hits show he's getting to the quarterback, and the pressure does affect the quarterback even if he gets a pass off.

Not a single Steeler on the list?

Is this a factor of the 3-4 spreading hits out among more players, fortunate timing turning most would-be hits into actual sacks, or does the official Heinz Field scorer still not know a hit from a hole in the ground?

Is this information available by QB (how many times each was hit)?

Then you'd probably get a Steeler on the list.

I was confused at first and thought that was what the list was (it's still before 9:00 AM and I'm an idiot...it took me a whole minute or so to realize that the names on the list were not QB's). My first thought was "where the heck is Matt Cassel?"

Put me down for wanting to see such a list.

Also put me down as a masochist (since I'm a Steelers fan).

What stands out to me is Cullen Jenkins, who is out for the year with a torn biceps muscle. He's been out since Week 4, which puts him at 57% of the games played for all of the other players on the list. If you prorate his hits, he tops the list! Every writer and player and coach had said he had been on an absolute TEAR, the MVP of the D-line, and these numbers at least back that up.

Then the two Packers DEs would be far atop the list, at 12 and 11 each. I do realize that the absence of Jenkins may increase or decrease Kampman's stats, but it's really worth noting.

Another who stands out is KVB of the Titans who played 3 snaps in the KC game and did not play the Monday nighter vs Colts. He would be right upfront if not for his injuries.

"If you prorate his hits,"

You can't do that though, because these things come in bunches.

Any chance you FO guys could do this the opposite way? IE, offences that have the most hits?

Aaron, can we read this stat in 2 ways?
"the number of times a player is late for a sack" and
"the number of times a player hurries the QB - and hits him"
.
Re 1:
Yes, I think the steelers share the amount of hits among more players than other teams.
And they lead the league in adjusted sacks, so they're not late (hit) but they're on time (sack).

Are these raw hits, or are they adjusted based on scorer tendencies?

Just out of curiosity, how many hits did Travis LaBoy (Cardinals OLB/DE) register? I would have guessed that he'd be ahead of Smith.

Interesting that you don't see Jerry Porter on this list. 10.5 sacks and not even 6 hits. That sure seems odd.

I notice that there are two guys from the Cards on the list of top ten quarterback hitters, and they have two sacks between them. Are these guys playing to the "echo of the whistle" or what?

Wow, eight of those fourteen players have played against Dallas (eight of thirteen really, if you take Ware out of the equation). Is that unusual or am I just noticing this because I'm a Cowboys fan?

As a Redskins fan, I can totally understand if players have a little extra motivation to hit Tony Romo.

Not only is Kampman a relentless pass rusher, he is the Packers' best run stuffer as well. He consistently holds the corner on rushing attempts and forces the play inside. He never suckers on inside fakes and gives up position. It's a pleasure to watch someone who plays his position so well.
