Bengals Cut Levi Jones

The Bengals have, as expected, released left tackle Levi Jones.

Where do you think Jones will end up? Who still needs a tackle? Buffalo? New England? Oakland? Washington? Green Bay?

I don't understand this move, notwithstanding the drafting of Andre Smith. Jones is still a decent tackle, right? And you need two of them, right? Not to mention that he's managed to stay out of the headlines off the field, which seems like no small feat in Cincinnati.

"The economics of the situation, with Cincinnati poised to pay out a major contract for Smith, was a factor in Jones' release."

Basically sounds like he's being paid more than they think a "decent tackle" is worth to their team. That's usually how these things work, isn't it?

Can you really get a decent tackle for less than $5M? Plus, who else do the Bengals have to pay, besides Palmer and 85?

His base salaries were not high at all for an OT-- increasing gradually from $3M to $5M per year over the next 4 seasons. Unless there were scary-big roster bonuses I'm unaware of, I see the fact that the Bengals couldn't find a trading partner as pretty damning evidence concerning the condition of Jones' leg and/or back.

You are probably right but I would posit one more theory. Every team in the league knows the Bengals are cheap and that having landed a tackle in the draft they aren't going to want to pay Jones too when they like Whitworth. Jones isn't the first lineman the Bengals have let walk it is an impressive list of players; Willie Anderson, Stacy Andrews, Eric Steinbach and now Jones. They clearly do a decent job of coaching these guys, or Palmer, Johnson and Housh have been making them look good, or they could just be good players. It would appear that simply for the want of the willingness to open the chequebook they could have one of the top lines in the league.

I would agree though that if he had been healthy the last two years there would have been a market for him.

We drafted OT Anthony Collins in the fourth, last year, and he's been surprisingly good...whereas Stacy was a revolving door that surely contributed to the suicide rate in the Cincy area, and Levi is rumored to have serious knee issues. Andre Smith and Collins will be the starters, and there's a good deal of fan debate as to who will be LT and who will be RT.

Unless Levi turns out to have a mutant healing factor, I don't think he would've outplayed Collins or Smith, so this is one time when Mike Brown's (slightly-overstated) cheapness is good.

He almost was a Viking last year, and could be again, if Chilly's Folly Ryan Cook doesn't step it up. Or if Loadholdt isn't ready.

Per Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com, he's visiting Seattle next week.

It's like someone was reading my mind . . . as soon as I saw the headline, I crossed my fingers and thought, "Seattle?" I know they're looking for someone to fill Walter Jones' shoes.

I wouldn't think that replacing an aging, perennial Pro Bowler with an oft-injured, average starter counts as 'filling his shoes'.

But I would be happy to see Seattle - or Minny - pick up another decent blocker.

Oh, now it makes sense! Cincy had to get rid of a decent blocker to make cap room for a crappy safety!

1. Sign Levi Jones to play RT.
2. Move Willie Colon to guard, where he may actually be pretty good.
3. Punt Stapleton's ass to the bench.
4. ???
5. Profit!

Too bad there's no cap space for it. :(

I wouldn't mind if the Yinzers picked him up...at a bargain of course

Buffalo has no backups to projected starters Walker & Butler combination that have any real experience. If he's worked in the craziness of Cincinati, he'll feel right at home with T.O. moving in.

Bears.

Put Williams at guard (heck put him at fullback or running back) and just plain ol' road grate and pound the rock. Give Forte the season off (Lovie punished him a lot last year) and watch Wolfe become a 2000-yard scat-back.

I'm kidding, of course.

Or am I?

IMHO, a better idea for the Bears, would be to follow the Ravens 2008 formula of going with three tackles. Gives the backs plenty of room to run, and gives Cutler plenty of time for his awful, awful receiving corps to get open.

Buffalo seems to be hoping someone emerges to replace Jason Peters. Maybe they kick the tires?

I agree that Buffalo seems a likely destination. The TO signing was a pretty clear signal that they're in "win now" mode, probably because Ralph Wilson's getting up there, and he wants to have one last thrill.

C'mon, Redskins gotta be going after him. Current starter at RT: Hole in Zone.
