If Todd Haley wants a job done right, he'll do it himself. So he removed Chan Gailey of his duties as offensive coordinator and we'll run things himself. The Chiefs have scored only two offensive touchdowns this preseason. Haley has been particularly critical of his team's pass protection and commitment to running. It remains unclear whether or not Gailey will remain with the team in some capacity.

Minor weaknesses dot these teams. Except for Arizona, which needs to bring in more help to really run Bruce Arians' offense.

Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Can the league just give San Diego an exemption to the playoffs and cancel the rest of AFC West games? Most of those are going to be blackout anyway.
Haley probably got jealous at McDaniels' epic fail last night and decided to contend for the chief magalomaniac in the division.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
In that division? He has some stiff competition.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
If owners are considered to be part of this question, there really isn't much competition at all, is there?
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
odd timing, but i wouldn't write the chiefs off just yet. someone has to finish second in that division, and they were a deceptively good 4-12 last year
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
No, 2-14.
Or, as Haley said to all-pro LG Brian Waters' face, in the hallway, "22 guys off the street can win two games."
Delicious would be the moment when that jerk has to eat his words.
The three stooges in the AFC West truly outdo each other. Everyday one of them brings out something breathtakingly awsome.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
"22 guys off the street can win two games."
Tell that to fans of the Lions.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Well, they were the best 2-14 team in the league last year, so they have that going for them...
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Okay, so Cassel's on the shelf 2-4 weeks with the MCL injury. Gailey's the one who installed the Pistol formation last year and made Tyler Thigpen more efficient than he ever had a right to be. And they fire Gailey NOW???
These AFC West coaches all make Norv look like Vince Lombardi, and Norv's the guy who called timeout with 34 seconds left in the Atlanta game. Falcons on the San Diego 7, driving for the winning score (which they got, of course), and Norv gives them a break with the TO. Zoikes Ahoy.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Well, my post was meant to snark on the one it replied to, not actually suggest the Chiefs might be good this year. Your points are well-taken, Mr. Farrar.
I didn't see the end of the Falcons-Chargers game; was the clock running when Turner called that timeout? If so, wow. Just wow.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Indeed it was.
Also, whoops. Didn't mean to hit "Reply" on my first post.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
No worries, Doug. I responded moreso to clarify my words (sometimes snark and sarcasm - shockingly! - doesn't come off well in print).
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
To be honest, Mike Mularkey caught Norv with his pants down. The previous play ended with about 55 seconds left; Mularkey delays about 5 seconds, then shuffles a run package out onto the field while the Chargers are still in some form of a nickel defense. The Chargers try to change on the fly, but it's not happening fast enough to avoid being outmanned if they don't call the TO.

That's not too hard to do, considering how much time Norv spends with his pants down.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Actually, I don't think that they were...
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
You know, maybe DJ Gallo was on to something when he said that this is actually all a Belichick conspiracy :)

Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
That's too plausibly funny.
No mention of Atlanta, though.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
The AFC West is currently the strongest argument in football for European style promotion/relegation. Along, of course, with the Lions.
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
I say good move. I hated Chan's run as OC for the Steelers, he was the most boring and predictable OC in the league. My biggest beef was that whenever something worked on 1st down he would call basically the same play for 2nd, once the DCs of the league figured this out Pittsburgh started seeing 2nd and 3s turn into 3rd and 7s with depressing regularity.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Wasn't Gailey the coordinator when the Steelers used Kordell as Slash and a lot of 5-wide formations in the mid '90s? Whatever else that was, it wasn't boring.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
I think Gailey deserves a lot of credit for Stewart's success as a QB. I think he's probably a better OC than anyone the Steelers have hired since then. I realize it will never happen, but I'd love to see Arians replaced by Gailey.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
I would take Chan Gailey over Bruce Arians any day
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
No, a good move would have been not hiring him in the first place. Once you have, you got to at least give the guy a chance. I mean, it's not like he is supposed to gameplan for preseason, is it?
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Kind of shreds the theory that preseason doesn't matter, doesn't it?
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Until Ted Cottrell gets re-hired, the division can still plumb new depths.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
If you fire your OC before the season starts it only tells you one thing: The front office had no plans going into this season. Going into your last game of the preseason you're at least suppose to know who's going to coordinate the offense. I thought part of KC's goal in the off season was to clean up the front office?
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Can't wait to see what the Ravens D does to this team in week 1.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
I have the Ravens defense in my fantasy league. (licking lips)
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Gailey and Haley (which would have been a great name for a comedy team) have very different offensive philosophies. This was also true the day Gailey was retained. I don't know if that decision was Haley's or Paoli's, but (at least) one of them looks like a no-class imbecile today. Ridiculous.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Its bad when this Skins fan can look to the AFC West and feel reassured that his favorites are not the worst run in the league by a long shot. I thank the FSM for Danny and Vinny when looking at some of the stuff that comes from these teams.
Re: Chiefs Fire Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey
Reportedly, he was fired because he wanted to acquire Reggie Ball and run the same half-dozen plays over and over again, none of which are designed for his best player.
Sincerely,
A Calvin-Johnson-era Georgia Tech Alum.
