Giants Sign Michael Boley

Our main man Matt Mosley checks in with the news that the Giants have inked Michael Boley to a five-year, $25 million deal.

That's an absolute bargain of a deal.

I am very pleased with the G-men's free agent moves so far. Wonder if they are done, or if Canty, Bernard, and/or Housh will also join the next SB champs?

BTW- Coughlin said he'll play weakside.

Seems like a solid signing. The Giants have suffered from a lack of athleticism at OLB over the past few seasons. They've been trying to draft mid-round guys to fill the hole, but none of them (Zak DeOssie, Gerris Wilkinson) have really panned out yet. (Bryan Kehl looked good as a rookie last year, but it's too early to tell where he ceiling will be.) Boley should also bring better blitzing skills, which was the area where they really missed Kawika Mitchell in '08.

The next SB Champs?

Bit early for that I think. Don't get me wrong, I think the Giants will be good, but SB Champs? I mean Eli can't even win a home playoff game. hahaha

Here's to selective stats.

I think he meant it primarily in jest.

I too, am happy with the signing. The Giants linebackers have been sorely lacking in speed since Armstead was in his prime. This should really help the underneath coverage.

Of course, I said mostly the same things about Barrett Green back in the day.

The Giants have a few solid athletes in Wilkinson and Kehl. The coaching staff are the ones who chose to start Blackburn and Clark.

Boley helps (although I hope last year was just the result of a poor fit in their scheme). I want one of the kids to win the job at SLB though, and am secretly afraid that Pierce is going to start being a liability soon.

As a Giants fan, I'm very happy about this signing. The Mosley posting says they were in the running for Haynesworth; am I the only one who didn't hear anything about that?

Giants have also signed Rocky Bernard.

A bit past his prime, but he should improve the team's depth at DT substantially (whether he starts or is the first guy off the bench). Robbins and Cofield both wore down under a lot of little injuries towards the end of the '08 season.

This was another brilliant move by the Giants. I am very confident that the Giants will be the 1 seed again and this time will win their home games. It'll come to to who they play in the Super Bowl. Winning the Super Bowl in the Cowboys new stadium will be very enjoyable for the Giants and their fans.

Um, the Giants offense didn't look quite so hot last year once Burress went down, and I hate to break it to you guys, but he ain't coming back. Losing an elite #1 receiver is a huge, huge deal, and some moderate upgrades to an already excellent front 7 won't compensate for it. Don't get me wrong: the Giants will in all probability be one of the better teams in the NFC and make the playoffs. They have an outside chance of being the #1 seed. Good for them - that's a better outlook than my team has ever had going into a season. But I suspect that once again most or all of the league's truly elite teams will be in the other conference, and if the Patriots really do trade for Peppers, it's frankly hard to see them not winning the Superbowl.

The Giants need some athleticism at LB. Antonio Pierce is known for his smarts ( but can't cover TE's like Witten), the others don't wow you. The Giants need a big play LB that can hit, force turnovers and enforce. Boley can be that guy.

Rocky Bernard is a highly underrated DT and the Giants needed to add some depth in there. DT was quietly one of their thinner positions.

Going into the draft I felt the Giants needed that big play OLB, WR, and if they could have brought back Gibril Wilson I would be very happy.

The Giants have 3 draft picks before round three and should be in position to grab the best players available and get giant value.

I have been extremely pleased with Gerry Reese... After Tiki left he promoted Jacobs from within, didn't draft a 1st rd rb or LT ( with Luke gone), built a solid draft, addressed the secondary, didn't overpay players, was patient with Eli and coughlin... resigned Jacobs and not ward... brought in Boley and Bernard...
