SEC and Big 12 Create New Bowl

Starting in 2014, the Big 12 and SEC will pit their champions (barring a title game/playoff bid) against each other in a New Year's Day bowl game that hasn't yet acquired a sponsor. Tradition! Pageantry! So on!

Relegation Simulation: Rewriting College Football History

We have been having some fun this week at SB Nation, walking through the ins and outs of the promotion-and-relegation system of world soccer and why it would or wouldn't work for college football. My contribution: a rough, seven-year, four-tiered simulation that encompasses the FBS ranks and a good portion of FCS. The result: Akron falls really far, Howard Schnellenberger adds "SEC coach" to his resume, and the Pac-12 is suddenly the deepest conference in the country.

Anyway, it's a fun way to kill some time, even though the top conferences would obviously never agree to such a thing.

Jonathan Vilma Sues Goodell for Defamation

Do commissioners actually have to turn over things like "proof" and "evidence" in the court of law these days? Looks like we're about to find out!

"It is certainly the case that in court, Jonathan will have a right to see whatever it is that Commissioner Goodell has been hiding from us and what Commissioner Goodell contends gave him a basis to make these false allegations," Ginsberg said. "We will have a fair and neutral judge to preside over the dispute rather than contending with the executioner also being the person making the final decision."

Russell Wilson, Drew Brees, and the Difficulty of Comparisons

Over on his own site, our new prospect scouting writer Matt Waldman has some thoughts about Russell Wilson, comparing him to Drew Brees, and what that says about player comparisons in general. Comparing player style doesn't mean that you're saying Player A is just as good as Player B.

The USFL is Back

We have one of these announcements about an attempt to create a new minor league every six months or so, and I think I always link to them, because I still think it's a good idea to have a spring developmental league that plays in smaller markets. This new USFL seems to have everything right. The key phrase from this FAQ on their website might be "Our intention is to allow NFL personnel unfettered access to practices and games." This thing is being built 100 percent as a developmental league. It seems a lot closer to the NBDL than to any of the other failed attempts, although I doubt there will be strict team-to-team affiliation agreements.
