Michael Westbrook Beats Up Pudgy White Guy

No, not me, sorry. Michael Westbrook appears on MTV's "Bully Beatdown" as a nascent MMA fighter, cast to beat up a bully with both submissions and kickboxing. I'll leave the rest of the details and the video to the excellent DC Sports Bog.

Sounds like a solid strategy to me.

Hail Hydra!

Is it bad I didn't even know who this guy was until I looked him up, and then still didn't know who he was?

I guess he was before my time...

He was a highly regarded receiver out of college who flamed out with the Redskins after assaulting Stephen Davis in training camp. At the time of the altercation Davis was an unheard of player, and Westbrook probably the most recognizable player on the Skins - their careers took opposite trajectories shortly thereafter, with Davis becoming one of the better backs in the league and Westbrook fading into obscurity.

Ask a Michigan fan. They know who he is... http://espn.go.com/classic/s/moment010924-kordell-hailmary.html

Watch the play if you haven't seen it. Only play I saw of the entire game, and still probably the best end of game play I've ever seen.

Westbrook continues to make me proud to be a University of Colorado graduate. *sigh*

And Westbrook isn't even the most notorious wide receiver from his Colorado teams.

Michael Westbrook was a bust and often injured receiver who would do "just enough" to not look like the complete bust and stay on the roster. He would always do just enough to stay on the team until the inevitable.

I hear the guy was a jerk in real life too.

I can't remember who said it, but the best observation I ever heard about him was: "A lot of guys play pro football because they love it. Michael Westbrook plays pro football because he can." Summed up a lot.

Bill, how did you ever pass up the temptation to title this "Westbrook Beats Up Pudgy White Guy" and watch everyone get upset because they thought you meant Brian? (I love it when that sort of thing happens, even if no one else does.)

It's funny, I used to get annoyed when people kept referring to Brian Westbrook as Michael. (or Bryant.) Now Brian Westbrook is a household name and Michael is long forgotten.
