DeAngelo Williams To IR

The Panthers have placed halfback DeAngelo Williams on injured reserve with a strained arch. Williams would reportedly have been able to come back in two to three weeks, but head coach John Fox said that the Panthers "...needed the roster spot."

Hahahah WHAT? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Deangelo the best player on their team other than maybe Steve Smith? Don't you keep a roster spot open for a guy like that? Call me crazy, but I'm just sayin.

Why have him play hurt and risk a more serious injury at this point?

I don't think you understand this concept, because your comment doesn't make any sense. If a player gets hurt and won't recover in time to play again this season, he goes on IR. It doesn't matter if it's a backup special teamer or a star running back.

You need to read the short blurb below the title

Yeah, this is clearly much stranger a decision than "the guy is hurt." Combine it with the St. Pierre-ification of the offense and what the hell is going on with this team?

Playing for draft position?

If it weren't for the fact that Fox was a lame duck, I
would say that the Panthers have offically given up on
this season (hence putting Williams on ice to prevent risk
of further injury), and were starting auditions for next.

That's pretty funny. I guess they're that one roster spot away from being a contender.

...if only they could get that special teamer in a uniform.

They are keeping him fresh for his new team in 2011.

Oh no, now the season is lost.

As someone who drafted D Williams in the late 2nd rd this year (as my RB1), after having drafted Matt Forte as the 3rd pick in the draft last year, armageddon simply can't come quickly enough for my taste.

I drafted Williams in the 5th round. I don't know how he lasted that long, and neither did everyone else who got grudgingly called it a great pick.

Yeah, not so much.

It's a disgrace that the Carolina Boobies have put Booby Williams on the Booby Reserve. Boobies, boobies. Big boobies.

(Who are the ad wizards that came up with that one?)

Most appropriate accidental double post ever. As far as I'm concerned, you are entitled to as many sighs as you like.

I understand the football decision that there is no need to risk bringing him back for this squad. However, Fischer's quote of need for the roster spot is just bizarre.
