Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks will be out at least three weeks after getting hit in the leg during last night's game. He has something called "Compartment Syndrome," which is the same problem Jason Taylor had during his season with the Redskins. That only cost Taylor two games, but it required constant treatment and Taylor's effectiveness was down for the whole season.
(Note: Compartment syndome is apparently swelling in the lower leg that compresses nerves and blood vessels, possibly causing permanent damage.)

Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
My first thought when I heard this a minute ago: "F-bomb, F-bomb, F-Bomb"
This leaves Manningham, Calhoun, and Hagan, and Reynaud as the only healthy receivers on the roster (I'm assuming Reynaud is still around). These are the Giants' third, seventh, and eighth best receivers and a returner.
The defense is going to have to play really well the next few weeks until Smith, Nicks, Diehl, and O'Hara get back.

you can say fuck on the internet
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
I think it's his thoughts that are censored and he was just transcribing them accurately.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
You can say almost whatever you want in most settings. Still doesn't make it polite or acceptable.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Since when has that mattered on the internet?
Here, we're all 6-4, and 250 lbs of solid muscle just waiting to meet you in the parking lot and beat you up if you have the audacity to disagree.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
I'm only 6'2", 220. But I have a black belt in karate and tae kwan do, and used to be an ultimate fighter, but I got banned for being too dangerous.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Giants probably won't have a particularly high AGL this season, but when the injuries you do have almost all come at 2 position groupings (WR and OL) it really hurts.
WRs for the Giants who will probably miss the next 2+ games:
Steve Smith
Hakeem Nicks
Domenik Hixon (torn ACL in camp; IR)
Victor Cruz (was just hurt enough to stash on IR to make some roster room before all the other WRs started dropping)
Ramses Barden (Broken ankle; IR)
The good news is that Smith and Nicks will be back before the end of the season, and that the next couple games aren't against top-flight competition (JAX, WAS, @MIN). But playing the game with the pre-season #3 (Manningham), #6 (Calhoun), and a guy who was cut in training camp (Hagan) as your top-3 guys makes any game difficult.

Public service announcement:
Don't ever click on any images of compartment syndrome treatments.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Holy crap! YUCK!!
(that's right, don't look up the pictures)
curiosity is killing you now, I know, but really: don't!
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Totally not yucky picture and description in The Carrol Guide to Sports Injuries, on sale now, up and to the left.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
It's called a "fasciotomy" to simplify your Googling. And I just thought that was what they did to Mussolini.
(I also like the Eagles)
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Not sure, but I DO know that when he was constipated, his dottore prescribed some innuendo.
Bonus points for anyone who works in a joke using gthe medical procedure known as adadicktome.
/juvenile humor (for now)
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Now you can see why I never deemed my compartment syndrome problems "acute." In college I would get (and still do get) numbness in my foot caused by swelling in the right calf when exercising hard-- the likely by product of being a high hurdler for 10 years, all leading with that right leg slamming down on the track. I got to sit in a lot of cold whirlpools back in the day.
I did have a buddy who played collegiate basketball need to have the surgery on both calves, and the scars were really long and obvious, but it allowed him to be active.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Well, I have to now, I mean how bad can it be- oh god that's terrible.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Eli has looked lost the last couple weeks without Smith. Now no Nicks or Smith? Oof. I'll be surprised if they score more than 17 points against Jax, Wash or Minny.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
I don't think you've watched the Jaguars or Redskins try to play defense this year...
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
NNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!
My fantasy team is crying right now.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
I'm sure Nicks will rehab extra just to try to get back so that your precious fantasy team doesn't suffer.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Brian Urlacher had compartment syndrome in 2004. He missed two games.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Yes, but compartment syndrome missed the rest of the season.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
Ugh. That might be the dagger. One too many injuries for the G-Men to overcome. Probable top 3 wideouts for the next 2 weeks: Manningham, Hagan, and Duke Calhoun. Actually, they should probably move Beckum to the slot WR position. probably won't matter though - between this and the patchwork OL, both aspects of their offense are now hamstrung.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
I heard they just signed Michael Clayton.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
yessum. taht is right. maybe clayton will reemerge from woofwork and do somethingh good for nyg
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
I was diagnosed with compartment syndrome. Not only that but 2 days before I was diagnosed with compartment syndrome, some kid playing soccer shattered my leg. He broke my fibula and tibia. Compartment syndrome is horrible. It's been now 8 months since I was diagnosed with compartment syndrome and I haven't played any sports. Nicks is definitely out for the whole season. It's a bummer being injured especially when you're a professional.
Re: Hakeem Nicks Out with Compartment Syndrome
My son had compartment syndrome which went undected by thestupid doctors in our small town. He had to have the muscle in his lower leg removed completely. He now will have drop foot the rest of his life and has to wear a brace to be able to pick up his foot.
